    Qatar University (QU)

In 1973, Qatar's first national College of Education was founded by decree of Qatar's Emir, in his vision to place education as a priority in the country's expansion. The College admitted a respectable 57 male and 93 female students in its first year among a small population. The country's rapid development highlighted the College's expansion to provide additional areas of specialization in line with the population's requirements. Therefore, in 1977, Qatar University was founded with four new colleges Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Sharia, Law & Islamic Studies, and Science. The institution rapidly expanded, with the founding of the College of Engineering in 1980 and the College of Business in 1985. It initially supported several small independent research centers and worked to establish a national community college, the College of Technology. Following the establishment of Education City and the Qatar Foundation in 1996, a new era of competitive options for local institutions of higher education began, and Qatar University's functions and services were re-evaluated. In 2003, the University embarked on an ambitious Reform Plan to increase its administrative and academic processes. To this end, a university-wide Strategic Plan 2010-2013 was launched, incorporating Key Performance Areas, which focused on promoting quality education and efficient and effective services. The Plan also renewed focus on research, leading to establishing the Office of Academic Research in 2007, which oversaw a growing number of high-profile satellite research centers. Community service also became a broad focus, and many facilities and services were enhanced and expanded upon to meet the public's needs. Today, Qatar University comprises nine colleges: Arts and Sciences Business and Economics Education Engineering Health Sciences Law Medicine Pharmacy and Sharia and Islamic Studies. 2. The University was formally established in 2005 due to the positive feedback from the postgraduate programs in various medical fields offered by the National Guard Health Affairs (NGHA) since the mid-1980s. The advanced medical facilities at the King Abdulaziz Medical Cities in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Ahsa proved to be critical foundations for the University's successful inception. KSAU-HS's main campus is in Riyadh, with two additional campuses in Jeddah and Al-Ahsa. Riyadh's main campus hosts seven colleges: College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health and Health Informatics, College of Applied Medical Sciences, College of Nursing, and the College of Science & Health Professions. Jeddah Campus hosts College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Applied Medical Sciences, and College of Sciences and Health Professions. Finally, Al-Ahsa Campus hosts the College of Applied Medical Sciences, College of Nursing, and College of Sciences and Health Professions. The umbrella of NGHA has given the KSAU-HS students access to King Abdulaziz Medical Cities in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Ahsa, which are considered the most advanced medical complexes in the region. Furthermore, it has enabled KSAU-HS to enhance its curricula and academic programs with clinical applications and training under highly competent health professionals' supervision. The University is very proud of the significant achievements made since its establishment in April 2005. Our vision for the future is outlined in the 2008 Strategic Plan, which provides a roadmap for growth and development and a record by which progress can be measured. It is not meant to change our course, but to sharpen our sights on the future and focus our collective direction more closely. Our collective tactics should enable us to build on our strengths and turn challenges into opportunities. KSAU-HS has undergone a dramatic transformation over a short period. It has changed from a predominantly teaching institution to a research-intensive university and adopted governance and management systems based on performance and best international practices. The University has set its sights on becoming a distinguished global university. KSAU-HS and NGHA provide optimal health care for eligible patients and their dependents. KSAU-HS will provide academic opportunities, conduct research, and participate in industry and community service programs in the health field. It will also provide educational health programs in an academic setting that fosters excellence in innovative learning, scientific research, compassionate patient care, and community health promotion that will enhance the health care development nationally and globally. KSAU-HS has several agreements and memoranda for academic collaboration with reputable North American, European, and Australian universities and institutions. Memorandum of understanding with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to establish a Collaborating Center for CanMEDS competencies in Saudi Arabia. The mission of this center is to promote excellence in residency education. It will serve as the hub of a network of medical educators, trainers, and faculty committed to supporting, developing, and facilitating CanMEDS in all domains of medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and in the professional practice. The center will host and present a series of conferences & workshops on residency training, develop a network of medical educators, and deliver education and training to postgraduate medical education programs in Saudi Arabia. In Nov 2010, KSAU-HS hosted The Saudi Arabian Conference on Residency Education (SACRE). This conference was a landmark event that highlighted the collaboration KSAU-HS has with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The topic discussed in the conference program included critical trends in the development of residency education, quality in a residency program, contemporary and emerging tools for assessment of resident competence, simulation technology to teaching & learning in postgraduate medical education, teaching the domains of physician competence using the CanMEDS framework, the best research in residency education, new approaches for enhancing excellence in teaching and assessment in residency, current controversies in residency education and the implications for their program. The Association for Medical Education in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (AMEEMR) selected King Saud bin Abdulaziz University as its headquarter. This decision came at the Association's 2010 General Assembly, which the College of Medicine at KSAU-HS hosted. Twenty-three representatives from fifteen countries and a president of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) attended the meeting. KSAU-HS has several licensing agreements to develop its academic programs with prestigious universities worldwide: University of Sydney (Australia), University of Liverpool (UK), South Alabama University (USA), Flinders University (Australia), Arkansas University (USA), Thomas Jefferson University (USA) the University of Maryland ) the USA), Maastricht University (Netherlands), The University of Oklahoma (USA) and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (USA). The campus is in the east of Riyadh. Its design is a mix of contemporary and Islamic architecture to reflect Saudi local culture and tradition's essence. The campus has ten thousand students, but it can accommodate future increases in student enrolment. Central units of the campus include Administration Building, Conference Center, Clinical Skill Training Center, King Abdullah International Medical Research Center, Seven Colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Applied Medical Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Science and Health Professions, Public Health and Health Informatics), Housing Compounds, Sports Center and Recreational Facilities. There is a large landscaping area connecting the buildings with footpaths for effortless movements and less traffic usage. Also, there is a monorail connecting the main areas of the campus with the housing compound.
  3. The education of women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has received a great deal of attention, and this has allowed Saudi women to make definite strides towards achieving their ambitions and unveiling their uniqueness in different fields. The Saudi woman has emerged at the local level at the international level as well. We see examples of Saudi women in culture and specialized research, examples who are respected and acknowledged in international arenas and the various fields of science, proving their success and worthiness that rivals their peers in other advanced countries. PNU is one of the outcomes of the attention given to the higher education of women. This attention started early, when the General Presidency for the Education of Girls established the first college for women in 1390 AH, corresponding to 1970 C.E. The inauguration of more colleges followed, reaching 102, ranging from university colleges to intermediary colleges and community colleges. These were distributed over 72 Saudi cities and included 600,000 students. In Riyadh alone, there are six colleges, namely the College of Education for Liberal Arts Disciplines, the College of Education for Scientific Disciplines, the College of Education for the Development of Teachers, the College of Social Services, the College of Home Economics, and the College of Fine Arts. In 1427 AH, a royal order was issued to establish the first University for women in Riyadh, under the Ministry of Higher Education's supervision. This included the six colleges located in Riyadh and several new colleges established for women's education and development in the Kingdom. The University was inaugurated in 1428 AH with its first rector, H.H. Dr. Al-Jawhara bint Fahd Al-Saud. PNU, therefore, aspires to become a beacon for science, knowledge, and values. We made it our mission at PNU to become a leading institution in the field of higher education for women, keeping abreast with global developments in the fields of science and technology to develop the education of women in Saudi Arabia, thus enabling Saudi females to effectively participate in social and economic development to achieve a better future for our nation. They were determined to develop a curriculum that balanced professional studies with the liberal arts-focused on service to others and infused the Catholic intellectual tradition while welcoming students of all ages, races, religions, and cultures. In addition to undergraduate programs for full- and part-time students (which became fully coeducational in 2018), the University of Saint Joseph has grown to include the following programs of study: graduate master’s and certificate programs (introduced in 1959) and professional doctoral degrees (2011). Two renowned laboratory schools — the School for Young Children (1936), a nationally-accredited preschool, and the Gengras Center School (1965), a unique education program for elementary, middle, and high school students — also serve to train University of Saint Joseph students. As the University of Saint Joseph has evolved into a vibrant educational complex, it has never strayed from its original vision: a steadfast commitment to preparing students for insightful leadership and service to others. 6. Modern University for Business and Science (MUBS) was founded in 2000 in Damour, the gate to the Shouf Mountain of Lebanon, under the name of MECAT. It was the brainchild of a group of intellectuals headed by Dr. Hatem Alamy, who had a vision for an educational institution that transcends religions and sectarian boundaries, cultural differences, and regional and local politics, to become an institution that the great potential of Lebanese students irrespective of their gender, religious, or political backgrounds. That vision became a reality at the close of the second millennium, despite the obstacles placed on its path and the challenges encountered. With total perseverance, dedication, and commitment of the founding group, MECAT University College was officially licensed by the Ministry of Education & Higher Education'sEducation's decree number 3585 issued by the Council of Ministers on August 8th, 2000. In 2007 the University changed its name to Modern University for Business & Science (MUBS) to reflect its new status, vision, and mission. The change was approved by the ministry decree number 868 dated November 11th, 2007. The University, which started with 17 students and five instructors, grew steadily over the years attracting students from diverse groups and bringing higher education to students and regions of Lebanon that were neglected and forgotten. Today MUBS enjoys a diverse population of over 1800 students, 200 instructors, and 100 administrators spread across its campuses in Damour, Beirut, Aley, Semkanieh, and Jal-el-Dib Center. Over the years, MUBS positions itself as an institution that strives for excellence and modernity, taking huge strides every year to maintain a high-quality education that introduces the latest pedagogical approaches. The university'suniversity's guiding vision is to lead the way in educational quality, academic integrity, and scientific research. MUBS is committed to creating conscientious world leaders exemplary in their moral, professional, and educational excellence. These values stem from a sense of responsibility towards our local and broader community and our youth's great potential, whose creativity is fostered and empowered through creative, modern pedagogical approaches that reflect our innovative and dynamic identity. The University uses the Credit System, a systematic way of describing an educational program by attaching credits to its components. Under the Credit System, each course is assigned a credit rating reflecting weekly contact hours. In general, a three-credit course indicates three hours of lectures per week for one term. A course represents a particular topic of study into a broader subject area and is the basic building block of a qualification. After deciding on the degrees and subjects of interest, you will need to decide on the courses to enroll in your academic year. Most courses are taught during one semester: Fall Semester (October to February), Spring Semester (February to June), and Summer Session (June to August), twice per week: Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday. Some courses may require attendance on Friday or Saturday. The School of Computer and Applied Sciences was established in the year 2000. Since then, the faculty has been multiplying, graduating more than 1300 students in different majors now occupying various positions at corporations in Lebanon and abroad. The school has two departments the computer science and Graphic Design. The Graphic design department offers one undergraduate degree in Graphic Design. All our degrees are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE).
  7. The American University of Technology was established in 1998 and received the first presidential decree number 2143 on July 14, 2000, then decree number 846 on January 18, 2008. The Finder campus, located on the Byblos highway and built on 23000 square meters, is undergoing a significant expansion. It is convenient for students coming from North Metn, Kesrwan, Byblos, and the North. Work to add four buildings started in April 2001. AUT has been ranked 5th among the 44 private universities in Lebanon by www.webometrics.info. AUT employs over 90 staff members and 110 faculty members. A medical doctor, a psychologist, and a spiritual counselor are on campus to assist students and staff. Students and staff enjoy using a cafeteria, a sports court, a reading room, a lounge, and access to e-library and postal services. Traditional methods are revised, and paradigms shifted to meet the challenges of 21st Century global markets. Individuals need to consider many factors before making decisions of socioeconomic, geopolitical, technological, ecological, and cultural importance. Here a question poses itself. Is our Higher Education System paving the way for such an evolutionary shift? The answer lies with us. AUT has already taken the mantle to prepare coming generations for the new era. Its primary focus is on promoting interpersonal and intrapersonal relations, leadership, and independent maturity. A hands-on application of knowledge complements a solid theoretical background. The eclectic nature of learning is emphasized in the classroom, on the web, in on-the-job training, and at the workplace. What makes AUT different: AUT follows the Active Learning Method, which is more compatible with the modern workplace than traditional methods AUT has integrated technology in the learning/teaching process. Students make use of computers, the internet, and other technological innovations in their studies and can function effectively in the new millennium business environment AUT offers a sea of activities, both social and physical, to its students. Graduates will be well-rounded, critical, creative, problem-solving, team players, be ready for the new business environment of the 21st century AUT developed tripartite partnerships with highly reputed universities on the one hand and with industry and the public sector on the other hand, so students benefit from a model of learning that is best suited for professional success AUT maintains a low student/teacher ratio allowing for a better learning environment AUT offers constant support for students, with a dedicated Center for Student Success to help with their every need (first in Lebanon) AUT placement office assists students with finding internships and jobs in Lebanon and abroad AUT keeps a close watch over employment trends in Lebanon and the world, and its programs are often modified in order to adapt to the ever-evolving requirements of the workplace The mission of AUT is to provide an innovative, technology-rich, entrepreneurial, experiential university research and learning environment that produces civically active and market-ready graduates. AUT launched the Blue Caravan initiative for diabetes screening and awareness in 2013 and examined 5,000 patients throughout 40 different locations. Its action collaborates with the Ministry of Health, the International Diabetes Federation, and the Lebanese Diabetes Society. AUT has pioneered human rights by introducing this topic as a required course for all students in 2005, a step that was later on followed by other Lebanese and Arab universities. AUT is a partner of the United Nations for the Arab Regional Camp for human rights. It is a member of the American Association of College Registrars and Admission Officers and presided the annual meeting of Arab ACRAO, of which it is an active member. All students at AUT are required to take a course in Human Rights Issues. AUT has established a financial aid office that processes students' applications and takes decisions on whether applicants should benefit from financial assistance. The assistance consists mainly of unfunded discounts on tuition fees with some students participating in a work/study program. While it does represent an excellent humanitarian service to the local youth, providing unfunded discounts is not a sustainable one. Therefore financial aid funding is one of the focus areas for fundraising going forward. Since traditional education methods are no longer compatible with today's requirements for success in professional life, AUT has adopted the student-centered active learning method of education, including cooperative, team-based, problem-based, and other innovative techniques learning.

  9. The Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) is a private Catholic higher education institution founded by the Lebanese Maronite Order (LMO) in 1938. From that moment, these monks, who had been entrusted with a teaching mission for more than three centuries, have undertaken the management of USEK. Their remit was to provide university teaching in conformity with the labor market requirements and close association with scientific research. Being a national institution, USEK has brought its teachings and curricula into line with the Lebanese state's official requirements, which acknowledges the diplomas it delivers. Furthermore, USEK remains careful in achieving a synthesis of tradition and modernism in the educational options it offers while remaining true to a Christian humanism, which is imprinted on the general education it provides. Due to the pressure to democratize higher education, the University is deploying necessary efforts to fight exclusion and abide by a non-elitist policy, albeit without making any concessions concerning education quality. The establishment of decentralized regional centers (in Zahle, Chekka, and Rmeich) thus springs out of the wish to implement the right to higher education. USEK has adapted well in light of soaring socioeconomic development and has created new vocational specializations to diversify its education and meet the needs of the labor market. Nowadays, USEK welcomes more than 8,000 students across its twelve faculties and three institutes, i.e., fifteen academic units, which offer a broad array of diversified high-level education. Studies in USEK are based on the modular system of units, which are accounted for on a half-year basis, or "credits." Also, the adoption of such a structure enables students to enjoy flexibility on all levels for the prospective degree courses' academic and financial management. It also enables the Promotion of students' mobility in Lebanon and abroad: Credits can be accumulated and transferred from one University to another. Personalization of the students' training: Each student's academic course is adapted to his(her) personal and vocational project. Flexible Organisation of the semester: Students are allowed the freedom to choose the number of credits (while abiding by the minimum and maximum numbers set by the University) and the courses taken during the semester (out of a group of courses that are required for a given curriculum), thus enabling them to ameliorate how they set their schedule. Development of close pedagogical support: The teachers' follow-up and support are reinforced by the fact that thanks to this system, education is centered on the students. The offer of diversified courses to students promotes a multidisciplinary approach and exchanges within and among disciplines. Facilitation reorientation: Thanks to the establishment of links among the various education courses proposed, students can easily change their curriculum without losing all their achievements. USEK cultivates a strong feeling of belonging among its students, thanks to its welcoming student life and the multiple services. Hence, outside the framework of courses, student life in USEK takes several shapes and offers new occasions to develop new competencies and knowledge and build an extensive network of contacts: a student magazine, social associations, and clubs, pastoral work, cultural trips, student parties, etc. Since the University is keen on emphasizing the culture of the body and that of the mind, it also offers students a broad choice of sports activities. The program includes basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, table tennis, oriental dance, yoga, ski, etc. Also, USEK has several sports teams, which take part regularly in competitions among universities and national and international championships. USEK has always been interested in research activities, as proven by the international magazines published by the University (Melto, Parole de l'Orient), the annals and proceedings of high-level conferences and seminars held at USEK, in addition to the numerous publications, which are the result of individual or collaborative research works and which – by and large – pertain to a broad theme of diversification, namely that of the Lebanese and Near-Eastern heritage (musical, theological, liturgical, literary, legal, historical, architectural, technical, scientific, etc.). In this context, exchanges within and among disciplines are promoted, thus establishing links among USEK's faculties and institutes to achieve better collaboration. Moreover, the University has access to much resource equipment earmarked for research activities and put at the disposal of teachers/researchers and students. As higher education became widespread and the socioeconomic crisis in the country grew harsher, USEK has set the following objectives for itself: Make higher education accessible to all equally, without discrimination and, most importantly, without excluding economically deprived students Preserve the quality of its students' education and training to better live in society and their vocational sphere. Since its founding, USEK seeks, and by Article 92 of the Constitutions of the OLM (ed. 2012) and the Catholic Church's social teaching on universities, to contribute to all its students' development through quality educational programs and research in various fields of study. By providing a high-quality American-style education to its students, USEK intends to prepare future leaders for innovation, professional growth, and life-long learning, in Lebanon, within the Middle East, and throughout the world. USEK is committed to a faith-based educational development of its students rooted in the Catholic tradition, whereby spiritual values and ethics and respect for cultural and religious pluralism are promoted.

  18. The idea of establishing Al-Manar University of Tripoli (MUT) dates to 1958, when the late Prime Minister Mr. Rashid Karami, together with educator Mr. Muhieddine Makkouk, a select group of leading citizens of Tripoli, decided to launch a project to meet the educational concerns of North Lebanon. In 1966, they formally established "Al-Manar Society," a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality education to students of North Lebanon and other regions of the Arab World. During the years that followed, the SocietySociety focused tremendous effort on acquiring land suitable for establishing a world-class university campus. Through a combination of purchase and grant, the SocietySociety successfully secured 255,000 m2 of separate land plots at a location known as "Baal Al-Ghandour." With continued perseverance by H.E. Omar Karami, aided by a special governmental Decree, the scattered areas of land were redistributed to form one uniform plot of land designated for the university campus. Today, the broad area dedicated to constructing the MUT campus and its ancillaries stands at 150,561 m2. After the assassination of H.E. Mr. Rashid Karami, Prime Minister Omar Karami assumed the Chairmanship of "Al-Manar Society" and formed the first University Board of Trustees in 1990. The Board was chaired by H.E. Omar Karami and 18 other prominent members of SocietySociety from Lebanon and the Arab World, each offering a unique combination of skills and financial support. The Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan Charitable & Humanitarian Foundation donated funds to construct MUT's Central Library. Mr. Abdel Majid Shoman donated funds to construct MUT's Abd el Hamid Shoman Arts & Sciences Building. H.E. Mr. Moustafa Durneika donated funds to construct MUT's Administration Building, all of which currently stand as a shimmering attestation to the University's bright future as a beacon of knowledge for generations to follow.
