  3. The education of women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has received a great deal of attention, and this has allowed Saudi women to make definite strides towards achieving their ambitions and unveiling their uniqueness in different fields. The Saudi woman has emerged at the local level at the international level as well. We see examples of Saudi women in culture and specialized research, examples who are respected and acknowledged in international arenas and the various fields of science, proving their success and worthiness that rivals their peers in other advanced countries. PNU is one of the outcomes of the attention given to the higher education of women. This attention started early, when the General Presidency for the Education of Girls established the first college for women in 1390 AH, corresponding to 1970 C.E. The inauguration of more colleges followed, reaching 102, ranging from university colleges to intermediary colleges and community colleges. These were distributed over 72 Saudi cities and included 600,000 students. In Riyadh alone, there are six colleges, namely the College of Education for Liberal Arts Disciplines, the College of Education for Scientific Disciplines, the College of Education for the Development of Teachers, the College of Social Services, the College of Home Economics, and the College of Fine Arts. In 1427 AH, a royal order was issued to establish the first University for women in Riyadh, under the Ministry of Higher Education's supervision. This included the six colleges located in Riyadh and several new colleges established for women's education and development in the Kingdom. The University was inaugurated in 1428 AH with its first rector, H.H. Dr. Al-Jawhara bint Fahd Al-Saud. PNU, therefore, aspires to become a beacon for science, knowledge, and values. We made it our mission at PNU to become a leading institution in the field of higher education for women, keeping abreast with global developments in the fields of science and technology to develop the education of women in Saudi Arabia, thus enabling Saudi females to effectively participate in social and economic development to achieve a better future for our nation. PNU realizes that it has a sacred task to fulfill. Therefore it continuously strives to achieve excellence and make a difference in the higher education of women. For this purpose, PNU implements the best strategies to integrate the values of education and research with the sense of civic participation and social responsibility, to offer strategic development plans for our academic programs, to implement knowledge and educational partnerships with distinctive higher education institutes throughout the world, and to hold conferences, seminars, and scientific and cultural events that guarantee the development of human resources, providing our students with advanced skills that enable them to face the challenges of the era and to contribute to the establishment of a bright and safe future. PNU offers diversely rich graduate and postgraduate programs through its 15 colleges functioning in different specializations, in addition to the Preparatory and Foundation Year programs, the Arabic Language Institute for non-Arabic Speakers, and a university hospital where students of the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and other Health Colleges receive their training. The University also includes an extensive central library, several supporting deanships, and research and service centers that aim to support the academic and educational goals of PNU. All this is offered in an attractive environment-friendly setting amidst an atmosphere that is engineered and technically prepared to accommodate the students' academic and psychological needs. Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University has a rich scientific and cognitive heritage where its history extends to the beginning of the establishment of women's colleges forty years ago. Since its inception, the University gave great attention to its vision, mission, and objectives in bringing positive change in society and transforming it into a scientific and knowledgeable community, and contributing to comprehensive development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The University has endeavored to achieve an outstanding rank among universities in the world and to adopt effective policies to support researchers in addition to promoting a distinguished research culture by: Funding research projects Supporting new researchers and future pioneers Authoring and translating books Publishing scientific works Establishing research centers in colleges Setting the foundation for establishing a women's health research center will serve as a center of excellence for scholars locally and globally.
  4. Al Yamamah University (YU) was established in May 2001 as a single college by the Al-Khudair family. This marked their second significant contribution to education in Saudi Arabia, having pioneered establishing the first private schools in Riyadh in 1957. Authorized as an institution of higher learning by the Ministry of Higher Education, Al Yamamah College opened its doors to male students in September 2004 and to female students in September 2006. In 2008, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah protect him, issued a royal decree approving the elevation of Al Yamamah College to university status, the culmination of eight years of planning and hard work to establish a distinctive, modern Saudi educational institution that provides both undergraduate and postgraduate education. Since its inception, the University has established itself at the forefront of the competition among private higher education institutions in the Kingdom using English as a medium for instruction. Al-Yamamah University is located north of Riyadh, on the Al-Qassim Highway, and occupies 160,000 square meters. The latest standards designed it for educational institutions. The men’s campus consists of the central academic building, the grand auditorium, the main library, the students’ lounge, a sports club, and a mosque. From its inception, Al-Yamamah University has been committed to providing female students with educational opportunities that prepare them for their vital role in the emerging Saudi labor market. The women’s campus is the fruit of that commitment, with a state-of-the-art campus featuring modern facilities – both academic and recreational – that are fully equivalent to those enjoyed on the men’s campus. Built at a total cost of 300 million Saudi Riyals (approximately US$ 80 million), the University’s ultra-modern campus provides state-of-the-art facilities and innovative instructional designs and curricula offered by faculty from around the world. Since its inception, Al Yamamah College (now Al Yamamah University) has realized the critical role that the English language plays in today’s world of business, knowledge, and technology and has taken a strategic decision to offer its English programs. With that in mind, YU started a long-term partnership with the US-based INTERLINK Language Centers to provide the English language preparation program for Al Yamamah students. Following the project-based, student-centered approach and with highly-qualified teaching staff, Saudi INTERLINK Language Centers (SILC) have been providing the Orientation English language program since 2004 to equip students with the English language and other academic skills they need to succeed in the academic context at YU and beyond. Al Yamamah University offers undergraduate and graduate programs in three colleges: the College of Business Administration (COBA) the College of Computer & Information Systems (CCIS) the College of Engineering and Architecture(CEA) Al Yamamah University provides academic instruction and professional training of the highest standard that imparts its students a life-long dedication to learning and self-development while enabling rising generations to shape a future marked by positive social and economic progress. Al Yamamah University aspires to be the foremost Saudi educational institution renowned for its adequate preparation of creative and entrepreneurial professionals who are consistently in high demand by leading public and private sector organizations.
  5. Effat University believes that the nation's future lies in the divine act of reading, as expressed in the Holy Quran. The verb IQRA, 'read,' transformed a nation that favored the oral transmission of culture and the lyrical expression of ideas into a nation that produced a formidable number of written manuscripts. Effat University maintains that its prospects reside in reviving this vital part of the divine inspiration, reading, and increasing comprehensive human knowledge to provide the nation with an infusion of new blood and guide it towards enlightenment. Effat University strives to impart international and humanistic Islamic values to its students. It prepares them to become influential members of their respective institutions and useful contributors to their society without being either narrow-minded or obsessed with liberalism leading to dissolution. God has brought a well-balanced nation to the world. By heeding divine instruction, Effat University will bestow society with generations of innovative leaders: "Act! Allah will behold your actions, and (so will) His messenger and the believers, and ye will be brought back to the Knower of the Invisible and the Visible, and He will tell you what ye used to do". (Sort Al- Tawba: Verse 105). Ethical values define human beings; they sign a highly cultivated mind and a devotion to the world of moral ideals. It is possible to distinguish between the values of the individual, the values of society, and the institution's values. By the latter, we mean the bond that brings together members of an institution, creating one cohesive body and the traits that characterize that institution's members. Effat University is chiefly concerned with developing individuals who possess solid values when an increasing focus on technological development has taken us away from a focus on spiritual and moral issues (which seem to erode further with each new development). The University's core values stem from the Quran's first word that Gabriel taught to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH): 'IQRA' or 'read'. It is as though Allah Almighty wanted to say that reading and knowledge are the roots of each action, even if this action is a call to embrace the new and final religion, Islam. Thus, the sacred text did not begin with words such as 'pray', 'worship', or 'invocate' because these significant actions may not be adequately accomplished without being supported by the acquisition of knowledge, which will transport them from a world of ignorance into a world of enlightenment. Effat University considers reading a mixture of inherent and acquired knowledge; therefore, reading is a synthesis of (i) divine inspiration and (ii) careful observation of the universe. The first of these is the essence of values, while the second is the source of innovation, development, and life creation. In Arabic, the word 'reading' can also mean 'recitation,' which can imply a gathering of people. Accordingly, the verb qara'a, 'to read', means 'to gather' it also means 'good hospitality'. It is on this semantic basis that Effat University has established its IQRA core values, and it is within the IQRA framework that the University has developed its ambitious and lofty mission. Recitation engenders fullness of thought, and gathering together advances the quest for the various domains of knowledge. The product is leadership accomplished through creativity and innovation. Hospitality indicates superior communication and interpersonal skills, which involve reaching out to people and opening doors of opportunity for them. This allows them to avail themselves of what we have to offer and means that we, too, may benefit from their contributions. Effat University sees its ideas and programs as a banquet available to all: 'To the winter home called the bolted one and saw not the host in bereavement.' Difference and individuality characterize human beings. Ideas, ambitions, emotions, behaviors, beliefs, and social groupings shape who we are. Cross-cultural fertilization yields constructive results by producing a master discourse through which identity, similarity, and difference are identified. Islam is not only a religion but a way of life. Islam provides a universal code of conduct governed by ethics. The Holy Quran and Hadith of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace be Upon Him) provide holistic guidelines to every person's affairs. These guidelines emphasize authenticity through virtues, including kindness, honesty, tolerance, self-restraint, patience, forgiveness, and compassion. Such values govern human interaction at all levels and in all different settings. All the 114 Surat of the Quran emphasize ethical behavior at all levels, but Surat Al-Hujuratt, in particular, pays specific attention to standards of social behavior. Surat Al-Hujuratt preaches 18 universal codes of ethics in its 18 ayas. Effat University's Code of Ethical Conduct draws on the teachings of Islam. The Code is also influenced by the philosophy of the founder of Effat University, Queen Effat Al Thunayyan (God rest her soul), who unceasingly sought to strike a balance between traditionalism and modernity, and the IQRA Core Values derived from the imperative 'read,' the first word of the Quran revealed over 1400 years ago. Since its establishment in 1999, Effat University's values have fostered stewardship, respect, care, and attention for all its constituents. Our commitment to integrity, honesty, and fairness in our operations - of which teaching, research, and service to the community are considered an asset - has set us apart nationally and internationally as an institution seeking excellence in all its endeavors. Drafting this holistic Code of Ethical Conduct is a crucial step towards the development of Effat University. Our mission is to advocate ethical conduct in the management of our academic, research, and community service activities, as well as interactions with our stakeholders. Effat designated eight fundamental pillars that constituted its Code of ethical conduct and named them 'Tarbawyyat Effat.' These pillars are regulatory measures and crucial to the University's progress as it competes for academic excellence in today's highly competitive higher-education environment.
  6. As a fast-growing institution of higher learning, Prince Mohammad bin Fahd University (PMU) has created history since it was launched. This University welcomed the latest technology since its inception. It implemented them in the teaching methodology and curriculum development. Some technological advancements are all-time internet connectivity, making e-library access easier, online courseware (Blackboard), Dined – labs, and online registration. The structure of PMU academic programs follows the North American model that utilizes the credit hour system as a measure of course weight, an intensive bridge program to prepare to enter students for university study, a standard academic core curriculum that forms an everyday basis for all degree programs, and individual degree majors that provide the academic specialization and the name of the degree awarded. English is the language of instruction in all degree programs and courses except those devoted to studying the Arabic Language and Islamic Studies. Consistent with the commitment to developing student learning outcomes and competencies, PMU emphasizes "student-oriented" teaching and learning methodologies throughout all academic programs. Courses utilize independent learning tasks, group and team-based projects, and capstone projects, among other techniques. Information technology-based resources and methods are an essential part of the learning process. PMU is characterized by a learner-centered rather than a teacher-centered approach to education. The overall student to faculty ratio is about 18/1. Class sizes vary with programs and courses. Today PMU is equipped with advanced technologies such as smart boards, TV Streaming, and Video Conferencing, etc., which are beneficial for students to get registered in specific courses and avail regular advice or guidance from the respective instructors online by sitting in the privacy of homes. Students avail state of the art facilities at PMU. Such facilities are solely meant to guide them to groom and stand up while accepting the global challenges they would have to count as professionals. They would have better employment avenues after graduating from PMU, which offers exclusive facilities. As English has become the only medium of communication internationally, PMU offers this language as a primary instruction medium. Several clubs and extracurricular activities inside the PMU campus are the best tools to hone its students' competency. The self-confidence developed by training and advanced knowledge prepares students to sell themselves with well-crafted and impressive resumes. Various innovative learning outcome assessments assess the skill development tools that track students' performance and overall progress during their stay at the University. The e-portfolio of graduating students at PMU is accessible online; hence, future employers can use them for hire. Such steps offer both earning of degree and at the same juncture attaining work experience at par. PMU offers many personal services, including financial aid to deserving students besides health and counseling services. These initiatives are to offer the best possible comfort in an atmosphere for personal and professional growth. PMU equally expects to impart excellence in education to the students enrolled while providing such services to them. The credibility of PMU, which it attained since inception, became possible due to a healthy workforce – administrative team, diverse faculty strength involved in designing an advanced academic scene, and the supporting staff who assist the authorities in assisting the university administration in its systematic move. TIEC (Texas International Education Consortium), as Educational Consultant of PMU, involved topmost experts from 32 American universities for PMU academic structuring. Of course, PMU is now able to promise and impart excellent education to nourish the future leaders in their areas of study. It is the sign of a globalized point of view on education that PMU adopts. HRH Prince Mohammad bin Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz much believes that the modern workplace's challenges could be met only through high-quality education. To make this dream come true, HRH took the initiative in 2002 to help establish a University in the Eastern Province with unique characteristics and distinctive mission/vision statements. This initiative was the starting point for the PMU project. The first step in setting up the University was the feasibility study. The decision was made to award the project to "The Consulting Center for Finance and Investment - CCFI", who finalized the study in June 2003. Based on the findings, the decision was made as to which PMU will offer academic programs. The feasibility study also offered recommendations concerning needed capital investments and operational costs. Top national and international engineering offices competed for the Architectural Design project of PMU. The decision was to award the project to Zuhair Fayez Partnership (ZFP), who has an excellent track record in designing educational institutions. However, to guarantee international standards, the space program for the educational facilities was done in collaboration with International Universities. The design phase was completed in Feb. 2005 and reviewed by Al-Hejailan Consultants Engineering Office (AHC). The university campus has been designed with care to provide facilities for a full range of academic and student services that recognizes and maintains the Kingdom's culture and religious values. In translating the PMU vision and mission into a physical reality, the University's architects have successfully created a university with a distinct and outstanding architectural image. The university design includes buildings that are shaped and located to create pleasant and inviting spaces. Plazas and covered walkways facilitate student movement throughout the University. The entire concept is built on the desire to facilitate, encourage, and celebrate the University's interactive learning environment. The campus is symmetrically divided to provide facilities for male and female students. The male campus houses academic facilities for male instruction in the College of Engineering, the College of Business Administration, the College of Computer Engineering and Science, and the College of Arts and Sciences. It also houses facilities for male instruction in the Preparatory and PMU Core Curriculum.
