      About Me

      1. The different stages through which the Higher National School of Agronomy (ENSA) are not a coincidence. Instead, these steps alongside the great upheavals experienced Algerian agriculture, the victim of a land settlement belonging to a bygone era. At the end of the XIX th century, the need for supervision of agriculture is increasingly felt and eventually lead to the creation in 1880 of the Practical School of Agriculture of Rouiba, a few kilometers to the east of Algiers, and whose transfer to Maison Carree (current El Harrach), will see the creation of the School of agriculture of Algeria in 1905. this important event is going to seal the "birth" of what later becomes the ENSA. We will try to retrace in the following, with the maximum objectivity, the various steps taken by our institution, milestones in the evolution of its education system, and its scientific and educational development. The University of Warsaw is most popular among students from Spain, Germany, Italy, France, and Turkey. The University is located in the capital of Poland, one of the most dynamically developing European cities. Warsaw is the center of political and economic life and has a lively social and cultural scene. It is steadily climbing the international rankings of the world’s most attractive urban areas: Top 50 of the City Brand Index, United Nations State of the World’s Cities report, best cities ranking and report by the Economist Intelligence Unit. In 2017 Warsaw took 15th place among the most sociable and friendly cities in the world (Business Insider, The 19 most sociable and friendly cities in the world, 2017). Warsaw has also – for the second time running – been named fDi’sPolish City of the Future (fDi Intelligence, Financial Times, Polish Cities of the Future 2017/18, 2017). According to QS Best Student Cities 2017, Warsaw took 52nd place among the best cities in the world. It receives a very high score in the affordability category – within the top five of the entire index – thanks to its combination of low living costs and reasonable tuition fees. The University’s historical Main Campus, located in the very heart of Warsaw, is renowned for its splendid architecture. Its imposing buildings, some going back to the 17th century, are one of the city’s main tourist attractions. The opening of the nearby University Library building, which took place at the very end of the millennium, marked a new chapter in the history of the University’s architecture. New buildings, completed in the following years, are modern, functional, and architecturally interesting. The Natural Sciences campus consists of imposing structures with state-of-the-art laboratories. The University of Warsaw recognizes as still valid its mission as a public utility institution formulated by its founders in 1816: “The University should not only maintain in the nation both learning and skills at the level they have already attained in the scholarly world, but also further develop and propagate them as well as apply their theory for the public good.” The University realizes its aim with the participation of the whole University community: its scholars, students, and staff. Since its establishment, our University’s community has written numerous glorious pages in its history. It has produced many outstanding scholars and created famous scientific schools. It actively resisted armed force, organizing clandestine classes when the University was not allowed to function openly. Our students and graduates have served Poland and the world. These proud annals are our continuing obligation. We must also remember what has been inglorious: submission to political pressure, religious and social discrimination, the expulsion of scholars and students. Let this be a living history lesson for us. The University of Warsaw belongs to the community of universities and accepts its universal aims, and its name is bound up with the capital of Poland. In response to the challenges arising from the transformation of our country, the new position of Poland in Europe and the world, and the education of a knowledge-based society, the University of Warsaw defines its mission as follows: The basis of the University’s activity is the unity of teaching and research. The University brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines. It is the place of a diversity of scientific research. Young researchers in direct contact with teachers develop their research awareness and improve their methodological skills. At the same time, the University propagates throughout society this multifaceted knowledge and these sophisticated skills. New communication technology allows this propagation to take place regionally, nationally, and worldwide. The University offers undergraduate and doctoral studies, organizes summer schools, postgraduate studies, and vocational courses, initiates interdisciplinary programs, and introduces new teaching techniques. The high level of scientific research, its connection with the education of students, and the diversity and attractiveness of our teaching will determine the position of the University in the country and the world, and so decide the University’s future. We seek to be the best Polish university and a leading university in Europe. We recognize our particular responsibility toward Central and Eastern Europe. The mission of the University within society is to guarantee access to knowledge and acquisition of skill to all who are entitled. Knowledge and education today decide a lot of people and entire nations. The University generates knowledge allowing us to know and understand the world around us. Skills acquired through study ensure high professional qualification and preparation for the proper fulfillment of public roles. The civic mission of the University is the formation of those elites who will in their activities serve the “Imperio rational” rather than the “ratione Imperii”. The University is a community of dialogue. The exchange of views, the clash of arguments, openness to new ideas and conceptions are bound up indissolubly here with respect for diversity and personal dignity. In this way, the University develops its capacity for cooperation regardless of political, ideological, or religious differences, and creates a model of public debate. The shaping of the civic attitudes of students is thereby combined with the development of their personalities. The cultural mission of the University is a synthesis of universal and local values. In the emerging conflict between globalism and regionalism, a special role is to be played by institutions that succeed in combining universal techniques of communication and knowledge of universal significance with the maintenance of respect for the historical and cultural identity of regions and states. The University where many disciplines are cultivated – from mathematical and natural sciences to social and humanistic sciences – is a place where such a symbiosis exists naturally. The University is also an institution, which assists the dialogue between the integrating societies of Western Europe and its Eastern neighbors. The mission of the University of Warsaw approved by the Senate shall bind all members of our academic community. It is a signpost for our activities and the basis for University programs. The University’s plans for development and the decisions of University authorities should be made concerning it. View full university
      4. The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (UWM) was founded on 1 September 1999. The establishment resulted from merging three institutions of higher education in Olsztyn, i.e. the Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the Higher School of Pedagogy, and Warmian Theological Institute. At first, in 1999, there were 12 faculties, 32 branches of study, and 24.500 students at UWM. The University also had a right to grant doctoral degrees in 13 scientific disciplines, and postdoctoral degrees in 6 branches. According to the University’s Act of Establishment, the position of the first Rector of UWM was taken by Prof. Ryszard Górecki, Ph.D. The University has been settled in Kortowo – an academic campus that used to belong to the Academy of A&T. UWM has undergone an intense transformation since its beginnings. Achieving such progress would not be possible without the funds of the European Union. The educational and scientific bases of the University have been significantly reinforced, for example by purchasing high-tech laboratory equipment. Over the years, UWM's offer was extended to new branches of study, and consequently, new faculties were established. Currently, there are 17 faculties at UWM, 11 of which have full academic rights, namely the right to grant post-doctoral degrees (in 13 disciplines). Furthermore, the doctoral degree can be granted at 16 faculties, within 24 disciplines. In the Academic Year 2014/15, 27.000 students are educated at 17 faculties, and 65 branches of study, within either full-time or part-time studies. Additionally, there are also 600 doctoral candidates and 1500 post-graduate students. View full university
      5. The Rzeszow University of Technology is a state-funded academic university that makes up a part of the Polish national education and science system. The Rzeszow University of Technology offers its students a wide variety of programs and courses. It also undertakes research and scientific projects in the following specialized fields of the applied sciences: engineering, mathematics, physics, economics, as well as the chemical and biological sciences. Through its multilateral co-operation with entrepreneurial and industrial entities, the University carefully constructs and tailors its academic programs to offer students and graduates the most rewarding hands-on experience, benefitting the development of their professional careers on both a local and national level. The University’s approach to learning provides students with an education grounded in the common values of respect for their community, their state, and the principles of human rights. It teaches them the value of patriotism coupled with tolerance and the exercise of due diligence in carrying out their student responsibilities. In its activities, the University cultivates and realizes the humanistic and intellectual ideals advocated and followed by its patron. The University is named after Ignacy Łukasiewicz, who is remembered as the father of the modern era in the mining and oil industries and inventor of a paraffin lamp. He was an innovator who did most of his work in this region in the nineteenth century. When the University was established, different aviation traditions began to take shape with the training of its first aviators. Insignia and gowns were not worn at official ceremonies until 1972, but since that time, the Rector, deans, and Senate members attend an annual inauguration where doctoral nominations and the matriculation of students takes place, and they don regalia including handcrafted scepters and medallions produced by local artisans. Afterward, the students and lecturers go, as a solemn group, to Rzeszow Cathedral to attend mass. The statutes of the University officially introduce its symbol. The University initials (PRz) symbolise the name Politechnika Rzeszowska (the Rzeszow University of Technology). The Maltese Cross, which is the heraldic arms of Rzeszow, is incorporated into the initials. The background is blue. Since 1976, the I. Łukasiewicz Medal of Merit has been awarded to distinctive researchers. The ceremony of awarding outstanding people with an honorary doctor title, Honoris Causa, is also celebrated solemnly. In 1994, the University began to publish Gazeta Politechniki, The Polytechnic Gazette, which is a continuation of Wiadomości Rektorskie 1988-93. The magazine describes news about on-campus life and research awards, as well as general information to spread well-being. At Christmas, the student body, local diocese, special guests, and the Połoniny ensemble gather to share in Polish Christmas traditions where we break unleavened bread with each other and wish each other well, then share in Christmas cheer with caroling. In May of each year, the student body celebrates Juvenalia, a “celebration of youth”, and they are given the town keys by the mayor of Rzeszow for three days – when they symbolically rule the town. The students also have plenty of other traditional events at the beginning of the academic year and at mid-term. View full university

      7. The Catholic University of Lublin was founded in 1918. It is the oldest university in Lublin and one of the oldest in Poland. It was founded by the Polish Episcopate on the initiative of Rev. Idzi Radziszewski, who was also the first rector of the University. KUL has been entrusted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its maxim is " Deo et Patriae" - "For God and Fatherland". The first inauguration of the academic year took place on December 8, 1918, in the major seminary in Lublin - the provisional headquarters of the University. 399 young people began their studies in four faculties - Theology, Canon Law and Moral Sciences, Law and Socioeconomic Sciences, and the Humanities. In 1921 the University received its building, the so-called Swietokrzyskie Barracks, an edifice of the Dominican Fathers of the Monastic Observance. The administration of the University attempted to have State rights granted to the University. In 1928 Parliament bestowed civil legal status upon the University. Through the Parliamentary act of 1933, KUL became entitled to bestow the title of Master and five years later (April 9, 1938) it acquired the full rights of a state university, that is of conferring doctorates and professorships in all its faculties. Material means were ensured by donations and funds from dioceses, support from Friends of the University of Lublin Society established in 1922 (as of 1928 the Friends of KUL Society), from incomes from the Potulicka Foundation (estates near Bydgoszcz, a gift from the countess Aniela Potulicka) and collections carried out biannually (since 1930) in all Polish churches. The 1930s marked the systematic development of KUL. The University hired a great many scholars and cooperated with national and foreign research and academic institutions. Plans for the establishment of new departments, among them medicine, philosophy, mathematics, and natural sciences, a school for journalists, were stopped by the outbreak of World War II. During the German occupation, the University was shut down, and a military hospital was organized in KUL's buildings. The rector was imprisoned, many of the professors and students were executed, while others were forced to go work in Germany or sent to concentration camps. The University was involved in secret, underground education in Lublin, Warsaw, Kielce, Jędrzejów, and Nawarzyce. After the liberation of Lublin, KUL reopened its doors on August 21, 1944, as the first university in post-war Poland. Despite difficulties (finding academic staff, rebuilding its devastated buildings, finding resources to maintain the University), KUL started making advances: the Department of Christian Philosophy (1946) and the Institute of Higher Religious Culture (1946) was established. A flood of youth from all regions of Poland came to the city and their number systematically increased (1946 - over 1600 students 1947 - over 2000 1951 - over 3000). KUL soon became an unwanted university in communist Poland. There were attempts to stop the development of the University and to limit its influence on society. The 1950s and 1960s were especially hard. The Potulicka Foundation was taken over and made state property, student entries and enrolment were severely limited, aiming at closing the most popular faculties of KUL, that is the Faculties of Law and Socio-Economics. The philological sections were closed. The rector, Rev. Antoni Słomkowski, was then imprisoned. The right to grant doctorates and professorships was taken away from the Humanities Faculty, and academic exchange with foreign countries was blocked. KUL alumni were denied employment in state positions. Publications of academic research underwent severe censorship. The government's treating KUL as a profit-making institution obliged it to pay high taxes, and due to delayed payments buildings and university property were confiscated. The response of the University to the growing repression from the State was an expansion in the area of research and the foundation of new departments and specialized inter-department research units. It was a time when the university enjoyed its well-deserved scholarly reputation. During the period of communism in Poland, KUL was the most important center of Catholic thought in the country and the only independent university in the entire Soviet bloc. It was also a refuge for the young, not accepted into other universities or marginalized for political or social reasons. A change came in the 1970s when the University was allowed to make contacts with foreign research and academic institutions, yet the real turning point took place in the 1980s. After many petitions, some of the Institutes were gradually reopened. Moreover, permission was granted to expand university buildings, among other things the erection of the John Paul II Collegium was started. The Faculty of Social Sciences was re-established, and a new Section of Legal Sciences and Section of Slavonic philology was founded. Thanks to the foundation of the Pastoral Care and Polonia Migration Section (1972), the Summer School of Polish Language and Culture (1974), and a one-year Course in Polish Language and Culture for Foreign Students (1977), more intimate bonds were created between KUL and Polonia. At present KUL consists of ten faculties: Theology Law Canon Law and Administration Philosophy Humanities Social Sciences Biotechnology and Environment Sciences and Mathematics, IT and Landscape Architecture three off-campus faculties: Natural and Economic Sciences in Tomaszów Lubelski Social Sciences in Stalowa Wola as well as many inter-faculty units such as College for Inter-faculty Individual Studies in the Humanities or the School of the Polish Language and Culture. The University undertakes the civilization and scientific challenges of modern times performing extensive research, publishing numerous books, periodicals, and encyclopedias such as the Catholic Encyclopedia and the Universal Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Studies are conducted in the Polish and English languages. Numerous facilities and special methods are used to allow studying to persons with disabilities. Students of KUL have the opportunity to develop passions and interests in many student organizations such as choirs, theatres, or galleries. 11. Imperial College London is a world-top ten university with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. Consistently rated amongst the world's best universities, Imperial is committed to developing the next generation of researchers, scientists, and academics through collaboration across disciplines. Located in London's heart, Imperial is a multidisciplinary space for education, research, translation, and commercialization, harnessing science and innovation to tackle global challenges. Global research-driven universities like Imperial College London have a central role in helping humanity address these changes and challenges by making discoveries, educating leaders, and developing innovations that benefit society. However, these universities will need to change to contribute to this future. In our Strategy 2015–2020, we set out how Imperial will be a source of new solutions, a contributor to a better future, a trusted partner, and a new paradigm of the global university. We will support an atmosphere and culture that embraces discovery. We will continue to be guided by our mission of achieving enduring excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine, and business for the benefit of society. We will shrink the time and distance between fundamental discovery and societal benefit. We will provide our students with the knowledge and experiences that equip them for their future roles as leaders. We will have the courage to take risks. We will remain true to our mission. While we cannot envision all of the challenges ahead, we believe that Imperial can contribute by focusing our research around four themes: discovery and the natural world engineering novel solutions health and well-being and leading the data revolution. Great discoveries begin with great people: talented individuals steeped in the knowledge of their core discipline, confident enough to work on risky, unsolved problems, adept at understanding and working with others from different fields, and immersed in an atmosphere of excellence. They are underpinned by talented support staff who put their full energy and passion into their work and our mission. We will make supporting and enabling all these people central to what we do. Our bright and energetic students are integral to our mission. We will enhance their experiences by embedding their education in cutting-edge research and providing increasing opportunities for them to use their talents in new entrepreneurial, creative, and practical ways. The Dyson School of Design Engineering is an example of how we will nurture the multifaceted talents of our students and develop them into future leaders. We have a tremendous asset in our highly successful alumni and friends. We will revitalize our relationship with them and encourage them to be a part of the Imperial College London of today and the future. Their knowledge, expertise, and experience will contribute to the intellectual power of the College. Across the world, people recognize that the changes and challenges we face require us to work together more effectively. Universities must drive collaboration, work across disciplines, and seize opportunities in ways and at a pace unusual for academia. It is the only way that we can solve the world's challenges. At Imperial, we are good at working across disciplines and collaborating. In 2014 three-quarters of our research papers collaborated with external co-authors from over 140 countries and 6,000 different universities, businesses, and other research organizations. However, we can be even better and can lead to new areas. We will seek the very best from around the world, sometimes collaborating with our toughest competition to create a fantastic team. We will ensure that our reward structures provide incentives for sharing, collaborating, and building relationships. This means that we will recognize collaboration in our evaluations for promotions and awards, and we will advocate for funders and evaluators to support collaborative work. We will make all of our campuses into dynamic centers of collaboration and innovation. We will bring staff, students, entrepreneurs, and industry researchers together in modern purpose-built spaces where ideas can be developed and tested rigorously and where networks can flourish. In White City, we create a new campus where partnerships working on global challenges transcend departmental boundaries. Every day, individuals, policymakers, and business leaders face questions, the answers to which require an understanding of the natural world, technology, medical advances, and business analysis. We can make a tremendous difference by using our expertise and knowledge to provide factual evidence and advice to government and business decision-makers. Also, the world is full of people who are naturally curious and enjoy learning. We must excite and inspire the public, from potential new students to eager lifelong learners, by sharing what we do in ways that arouse curiosity, awaken a love of discovery, and broaden the understanding of an increasingly complex world. Researchers are courageous. We probe the boundaries of knowledge; we seek discovery and delve into the unknown. We take calculated risks when we know we are onto something important. We find collaborators readily. Individually we already know how to do this. Institutions are more conservative. We will ensure that Imperial creates an environment where researchers can be courageous and push back the boundaries of their fields. We will make working together easy and support judicious risk-taking and collaboration. The world is changing, and Imperial is changing too. We set out this Strategy 2015–2020 to help guide us in the next few years. We acknowledge that we do not know where the new challenges and opportunities will be. We do know that we have great people, and we will build a more agile, adaptive, and resilient organization so that we will be ready for whatever the future holds.

      22. Freie Universität Berlin was founded in 1948 by professors and students, in response to the persecution faced by students who took a critical eye of the system at Universität Unter den Linden, at that time located in the Soviet sector of the divided city. The idea of founding a free university found widespread support in the international community, including financial support. This outpouring of aid helped pave the way for Freie Universität to become a university with an outstanding international reputation. The principles of freedom and internationality have guided the university's development ever since. Since the university's founding in December of 1948, the academic ethos of Freie Universität Berlin has always been defined by three values: truth, justice, and freedom. The years 1968, 1990, and 2007 mark turning points in the history of Freie Universität. The university was one of Germany's important sites for the student protests of the 1960s, which sparked a trend toward greater openness, equality, and democracy. Then, after German reunification in 1990, Freie Universität Berlin shifted its emphasis, increasing its research activities. The number of graduates, successful doctoral candidates, and publications also grew by a significant measure. The basis for the university's successful new approach was a series of fundamental reforms, including the introduction of modern management structures in the university's administration, reorganization of the departments, and use of funding to support specific aims. In 2007, Freie Universität Berlin was selected in the Excellence Initiative jointly sponsored by the German federal government and the federal states' governments. It was one of nine universities in Germany to receive distinction in all three funding lines, a step that has enabled the university to solidify and further expand its position as an "international network university." In 2012 during the second funding round of the Excellence Initiative, it was selected again and is now one of eleven universities of excellence in Germany. Freie Universität Berlin is a leading research institution. One of the German universities successful in all three funding lines in the federal and state Excellence Initiative, thereby receiving additional funding for its institutional future development strategy. Freie Universität can thus take its place as an international network university in the global competition among universities. Development and assessment of research projects occur within various focus areas, research networks, and platforms for interdisciplinary collaborative research. The Excellence Initiative's performance provided funding for several new graduate schools and transdisciplinary research clusters. In particular, the graduate schools play a vital role in developing internationally competitive research centers of excellence. Freie Universität Berlin is a broad-based university with 15 departments and central institutes offering over 150-degree programs across a wide range of subjects. Freie Universität Berlin was founded on December 4, 1948, by students, scholars, and scientists to support the American allied forces and politicians in Berlin. The move was sparked by the persecution faced by students who took a critical eye on the system at the former Universität Unter den Linden, located in the Soviet sector of the divided city. Students and academics wanted to be free to pursue their learning, teaching, and research activities at Freie Universität without being subject to political influence. Generous donations from the United States enabled Freie Universität to build some of its central facilities, including the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital and the Henry Ford Building. In a nod to the university's founding history, the seal of Freie Universität still features the words truth, justice, and freedom. In 2007, the university dedicated a memorial to the founding students killed by the Soviet secret service. The university also presents its Freedom Award to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to freedom. To remain relevant and to compete academically and intellectually from its isolated position in West Berlin, Freie Universität made connections with academic institutions and leading literary figures in Germany, elsewhere in Europe, and worldwide. What started of necessity soon became a success strategy: Freie Universität currently maintains roughly 105 partnerships at the university-wide level and about 330 university partnerships within the Erasmus academic exchange network. 45 institute partnerships. Freie Universität is located in the southwest of Berlin, in Dahlem's garden district, which had already become a top-ranked location for research and study in the early 20th century. Academic activity in Dahlem was supported by Friedrich Althoff, Ministerial Director at the Prussian Ministry of Culture, who proposed the founding of "a German Oxford" at that time. The first new buildings housed government academic and scientific agencies and new institutes of the former University of Berlin. Also, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society – the precursor of the Max Planck Society – maintained various institutes in Dahlem from the time it was founded in 1911. A dynamic group of scientists, including Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, and Max Planck, performed pioneering research at the new site, earning multiple Nobel Prizes. In 1938, in what is now the Hahn-Meitner Building, nuclear fission occurred. Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner had spent more than two decades working together there toward that aim. Since it was first founded, Freie Universität Berlin has used former buildings of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society and brought several architecturally innovative buildings of its own to the area. Freie Universität is made up of groups of buildings all located within walking distance of one another. The campus planners designed it along the American college campus lines, a novelty in postwar Germany. The permanent exhibition "Future from the Very Beginning" (Zukunft von Anfang an) in the Henry Ford Building of Freie Universität highlights the university's rich and varied history, from its founding in 1948 right up to the present day. Photographs, early films, radio reports, and contemporary printed materials show the university's position at the center of contemporary events right from the start. The Henry Ford Building exhibition is open to the public at no charge during regular building opening hours (Garystraße 35, 14195 Berlin, 7:30 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday through Friday).
