About Me

  1. The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (UWM) was founded on 1 September 1999. The establishment resulted from merging three institutions of higher education in Olsztyn, i.e. the Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the Higher School of Pedagogy, and Warmian Theological Institute. At first, in 1999, there were 12 faculties, 32 branches of study, and 24.500 students at UWM. The University also had a right to grant doctoral degrees in 13 scientific disciplines, and postdoctoral degrees in 6 branches. According to the University’s Act of Establishment, the position of the first Rector of UWM was taken by Prof. Ryszard Górecki, Ph.D. The University has been settled in Kortowo – an academic campus that used to belong to the Academy of A&T. UWM has undergone an intense transformation since its beginnings. Achieving such progress would not be possible without the funds of the European Union. The educational and scientific bases of the University have been significantly reinforced, for example by purchasing high-tech laboratory equipment. Over the years, UWM's offer was extended to new branches of study, and consequently, new faculties were established. Currently, there are 17 faculties at UWM, 11 of which have full academic rights, namely the right to grant post-doctoral degrees (in 13 disciplines). Furthermore, the doctoral degree can be granted at 16 faculties, within 24 disciplines. In the Academic Year 2014/15, 27.000 students are educated at 17 faculties, and 65 branches of study, within either full-time or part-time studies. Additionally, there are also 600 doctoral candidates and 1500 post-graduate students. View full university
  2. The University of Silesia in Katowice is one of the largest and most dynamically developing public universities in Poland. Founded in 1968, the University of Silesia quickly established a reputation as a vibrant academic institution and an important interdisciplinary research hub. With a tradition of launching new programs to best meet the needs of rapidly changing labor markets, the University of Silesia offers students a variety of programs and specialized fields of study. With outstanding research teams and well-equipped laboratories, we are an important player in the global research arena. We actively participate in European Commission initiatives focused both on educational and scientific development, and realize projects within the frame of programs such as Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020. The University of Silesia in Katowice gives its students a unique possibility to develop their interests, fulfill their passions and gain practical skills necessary in the constantly changing job market. Every academic year we offer over 70 programs and over 240 specializations, that are designed to help our students and alumni meet the challenges of changing reality and the labor market. We provide a stimulating learning environment where individual interests can be pursued and academic ambitions achieved. The University of Silesia serves almost 25,000 intramural and extramural students and it already has 250,000 proud alumni, among which there are outstanding personalities in many fields. Our community consists also of more than 2,000 teachers and researchers. The roots of the University of Silesia date back to 1928 when the Institute of Pedagogics was established in Katowice. The institute was later reformed to National Pedagogical University in 1950, however, the first preparations for the formation of what would later become the University of Silesia were taken just after the finish of the Second World War. In June 1962, a branch of Jagiellonian University was settled in Katowice, which concentrated, apart from humanities, on mathematics, physics, and law. Together with the National Pedagogical University, these are the foundations of what came to life in 1968 as the University of Silesia. And so on October 1, 1968, the University (comprising of four faculties) had its first academic year inaugurated, providing almost 6,000 students with twelve programs, such as philology, pedagogics, psychology, history, law, administration, mathematics, physics, chemistry, physical education, electrotechnics, and mechanics. Two years later, the branch of the University in Cieszyn was established, and in the following years (1974-1978) six new faculties were opened. We are currently teaching almost 25,000 students on over 70 programs and 240 specializations on bachelor, master, and doctoral levels. With almost 50 years of its tradition, the University of Silesia has gathered well over 250,000 alumni to this day and has its units located in 4 different cities. Having renown among international students, the University of Silesia makes its best efforts to provide them with a profound and satisfying learning experience supported not only with the sole transfer of knowledge but also by emphasizing students' personal development. The University of Silesia warmly welcomes international students and candidates willing to undertake studies in our institution either in Polish or in a foreign language. Our broad and diverse educational offer ensures us that we can develop specialists in almost every possible field of science - from arts and linguistics to molecular physics. "The University of Silesia, operating under the ethos of European scholarship, assumes that as a community of scholars and students bound up with mutual respect and trust it not only responds to the increasing educational needs by providing instruction at the best possible level and conducting research which respects the elementary right of academic freedom in the pursuit of Truth but also carries out a significant social mission consisting in encouraging self-development as well as the formation of creative attitudes and spiritual aspirations, whereby it helps shape the cultural image of the Region and Poland. Whilst being committed to both preserving and disseminating knowledge which is a legacy of past generations, the University of Silesia also actively contributes to the cultural heritage of society through the pursuit of art and creative research, the interpretation of contemporary reality, and the analysis of the evolution of values which shape the immediate environment. Both the geographical and cultural situation of the University, at a junction of regions to every one of which History assigned a different course, yet which for centuries have developed their culture through interpenetration and dialogue, endows the University with a European dimension and enables it to define itself as a place whose identity is constituted not by its isolation, but by its readiness to welcome the Other and Different." 5. The Catholic University of Lublin was founded in 1918. It is the oldest university in Lublin and one of the oldest in Poland. It was founded by the Polish Episcopate on the initiative of Rev. Idzi Radziszewski, who was also the first rector of the University. KUL has been entrusted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its maxim is " Deo et Patriae" - "For God and Fatherland". The first inauguration of the academic year took place on December 8, 1918, in the major seminary in Lublin - the provisional headquarters of the University. 399 young people began their studies in four faculties - Theology, Canon Law and Moral Sciences, Law and Socioeconomic Sciences, and the Humanities. In 1921 the University received its building, the so-called Swietokrzyskie Barracks, an edifice of the Dominican Fathers of the Monastic Observance. The administration of the University attempted to have State rights granted to the University. In 1928 Parliament bestowed civil legal status upon the University. Through the Parliamentary act of 1933, KUL became entitled to bestow the title of Master and five years later (April 9, 1938) it acquired the full rights of a state university, that is of conferring doctorates and professorships in all its faculties. Material means were ensured by donations and funds from dioceses, support from Friends of the University of Lublin Society established in 1922 (as of 1928 the Friends of KUL Society), from incomes from the Potulicka Foundation (estates near Bydgoszcz, a gift from the countess Aniela Potulicka) and collections carried out biannually (since 1930) in all Polish churches. The 1930s marked the systematic development of KUL. The University hired a great many scholars and cooperated with national and foreign research and academic institutions. Plans for the establishment of new departments, among them medicine, philosophy, mathematics, and natural sciences, a school for journalists, were stopped by the outbreak of World War II. During the German occupation, the University was shut down, and a military hospital was organized in KUL's buildings. The rector was imprisoned, many of the professors and students were executed, while others were forced to go work in Germany or sent to concentration camps. The University was involved in secret, underground education in Lublin, Warsaw, Kielce, Jędrzejów, and Nawarzyce. After the liberation of Lublin, KUL reopened its doors on August 21, 1944, as the first university in post-war Poland. Despite difficulties (finding academic staff, rebuilding its devastated buildings, finding resources to maintain the University), KUL started making advances: the Department of Christian Philosophy (1946) and the Institute of Higher Religious Culture (1946) was established. A flood of youth from all regions of Poland came to the city and their number systematically increased (1946 - over 1600 students 1947 - over 2000 1951 - over 3000). KUL soon became an unwanted university in communist Poland. There were attempts to stop the development of the University and to limit its influence on society. The 1950s and 1960s were especially hard. The Potulicka Foundation was taken over and made state property, student entries and enrolment were severely limited, aiming at closing the most popular faculties of KUL, that is the Faculties of Law and Socio-Economics. The philological sections were closed. The rector, Rev. Antoni Słomkowski, was then imprisoned. The right to grant doctorates and professorships was taken away from the Humanities Faculty, and academic exchange with foreign countries was blocked. KUL alumni were denied employment in state positions. Publications of academic research underwent severe censorship. The government's treating KUL as a profit-making institution obliged it to pay high taxes, and due to delayed payments buildings and university property were confiscated. The response of the University to the growing repression from the State was an expansion in the area of research and the foundation of new departments and specialized inter-department research units. It was a time when the university enjoyed its well-deserved scholarly reputation. During the period of communism in Poland, KUL was the most important center of Catholic thought in the country and the only independent university in the entire Soviet bloc. It was also a refuge for the young, not accepted into other universities or marginalized for political or social reasons. A change came in the 1970s when the University was allowed to make contacts with foreign research and academic institutions, yet the real turning point took place in the 1980s. After many petitions, some of the Institutes were gradually reopened. Moreover, permission was granted to expand university buildings, among other things the erection of the John Paul II Collegium was started. The Faculty of Social Sciences was re-established, and a new Section of Legal Sciences and Section of Slavonic philology was founded. Thanks to the foundation of the Pastoral Care and Polonia Migration Section (1972), the Summer School of Polish Language and Culture (1974), and a one-year Course in Polish Language and Culture for Foreign Students (1977), more intimate bonds were created between KUL and Polonia. At present KUL consists of ten faculties: Theology Law Canon Law and Administration Philosophy Humanities Social Sciences Biotechnology and Environment Sciences and Mathematics, IT and Landscape Architecture three off-campus faculties: Natural and Economic Sciences in Tomaszów Lubelski Social Sciences in Stalowa Wola as well as many inter-faculty units such as College for Inter-faculty Individual Studies in the Humanities or the School of the Polish Language and Culture. The University undertakes the civilization and scientific challenges of modern times performing extensive research, publishing numerous books, periodicals, and encyclopedias such as the Catholic Encyclopedia and the Universal Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Studies are conducted in the Polish and English languages. Numerous facilities and special methods are used to allow studying to persons with disabilities. Students of KUL have the opportunity to develop passions and interests in many student organizations such as choirs, theatres, or galleries. Thanks to their activity, KUL has a very rich cultural life. “KULturalia” - student’s largest cultural event is held annually. Many scientific circles found at each major of the University deal with students’ extracurricular scientific development. Moreover, students actively participate in the Academic Sports Association, in PTTK and in the Academic Legion of KUL, in which they may undergo defense training. The University Chaplaincy intensively works and its activities comprise a series of initiatives, movements, communities, and associations. KUL co-operates with 140 foreign universities and is a member of many international organizations and associations such as the European University Association (EUA), European Federation of Catholic Universities (EFCU), or International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU). It participates in exchange programs and scientific co-operation thanks to which many renowned scholars and people of the Church and culture from all over the world visit the University every year. The Catholic University in Lublin, at present named after John Paul II, is one of the fastest-growing universities in Poland. Each year the scope of scientific research and the educational offer is extended. Numerous investments demonstrate the development of the University they are designed to create optimal conditions for the development of academic staff and students. View full university

Life is lived to the full in Namur. With 40 different programs at the Bachelor, Master and Doctorate levels, the UNamur welcomes over 4,900 students in six Faculties: Arts, Law, Economics, Social Sciences and Business Administration, Computer Science, Medicine and Sciences. Its reputation is based on the quality of its education, its professors' availability, and sufficient resources to ensure maximum chances of success for each student: introduction to study techniques, preparation courses, small group work, course materials available on-line, personalized assessments… The UNamur has redesigned its study programs in line with the European harmonization of Higher Education ("Bologna Process"). The UNamur has widened its studies' choice to reconcile both specificity and openness to social and human issues. Quality of study in Namur is the first-class advantage for those who wish to discover a university on a human scale at the crossroads of Europe, as part of a study exchange program or to prepare to enter professional life. Research in Namur aims at balancing ethics and excellence. It is developed in 105 research units, active in arts, law, social and exact sciences, medicine, and computer science. The UNamur excels in sectors such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, physics and chemistry of surfaces, engineering of information systems and databases, legal questions raised by information and communication technologies, regional economics, the economics of development and social representation of disabilities …univ3 The research results within the UNamur have led to the deposit of numerous patents, technology transfers to industry, and the creation of spin-off companies: EAT in 1999, Nanocyl in 2002, BioXpr, and ReveR. In 2003, StratiCell in 2005 … Fully integrated into the city and region, the UNamur participates actively in their social and economic development. It promotes partnerships with the local economic partners, develops evening and weekend education programs and life-long learning … It offers consultancy services and expertise to the public and private sectors. These activities extend well beyond the region or national borders through the ongoing collaboration with international bodies. The UNamur aims to promote justice and grants particular concern to those who are socially or economically fragile. To mention but a few research projects: the DFLS (Basic Rights and Social Cohesion Research Centre), and the CRED (Centre for Research in the Economics of Development), or studies on the issue of disabilities conducted by the Department of Psychology. The University also promotes education for development through its NGO, the FUCID (University Foundation for International Development Cooperation). The UNamur has found many ways to enlarge its network of contacts and to ensure international recognition: high-quality teaching and research, coherent policies facilitating the exchange of students, researchers, and professors as well as the hosting of international students, membership in numerous international associations, participation in development projects. The University of Namur (UNamur) is pleased to welcome you to this website, which will help you to learn about the University's objectives and all aspects of life at our University, the services that it intends to provide in our society more concretely, you will discover the men and women that work there, their educational and research programs, as well as the events that mark the life of the University. Recteur UNamur University in the French-speaking community of Belgium, the UNamur's main objective is to "train students and researchers as responsible actors in society" and, since its foundation in 1831 by the Society of Jesus, it pays particular attention to the quality of the education it provides. The objective is to train men and women who, of course, are skilled in their discipline, but who also have the interdisciplinary experience, are open to questions of conscience, sensitive to the fundamental problems that challenge our contemporaries, and can fully assume their responsibilities at the heart of society, on the horizon of our vast world! The mission of every University is not only to diffuse knowledge but also to produce new knowledge, which requires providing an essential place for research. Our laboratories and research centers aim to develop quality projects by resolutely joining collaboration networks at the national and international levels. Whether this research is fundamental or more oriented, it is "meticulous in taking into account the human and social dimensions of science and technology." The knowledge developed at the University does not have the objective of remaining locked away, but it is to be used to serve society. This is how our University in Namur proactively integrates into its local and regional environment and shows itself to satisfy the many requests it receives from public and private organisms, associations, and many political, social, economic, and cultural actors. The primary objective of the University is to train students and researchers as responsible actors in society. In this respect, the UNamur, working in the spirit of Europe's academic tradition, is "an ideal meeting-ground for teachers capable of imparting their knowledge and well equipped to develop it by research and innovation and students entitled, able and willing to enrich their minds with that knowledge." Teaching and research aim to diffuse current knowledge and to produce new knowledge. The UNamur privileges high-quality teaching mobilizing fundamental concepts of knowledge and research, which associates its pursuit of excellence with a long-term perspective. The academic approach to teaching and research requires a permanent self-critical attitude about its objectives and methods in each discipline. The UNamur provides a platform for this critical search for knowledge and insists that science and technology's human and social dimensions be taken into account. It seeks to overcome the division and fragmentation of knowledge by stimulating epistemological debate and interdisciplinary dialogue. The universality of teaching and research and the globalization of society's problems require universities to be open to each other. The UNamur has helped establish and collaborate in various international networks, particularly in association with Jesuit universities. Through its teaching and research and within the limits of its own identity and independence, the University questions society and answers society's needs. Thus, the UNamur aims to be an agent of change in its region and contribute to its cultural, social, political, and economic development, in partnership with other local actors. Within the University and beyond its walls, it encourages the analysis of society's significant problems, particularly the inequality of opportunities between individuals and between peoples.

    Hasselt University

Hasselt University's headquarters are in the Old Prison (Oude Gevangenis) on Hasselt Campus. This building on Martelarenlaan in Hasselt is the first place to go when you first enroll al the university and all contacts with the student administration. The student administration's services and student facilities, the study coaches, and the ombudsperson can, of course, be contacted in Building D (block D) on Diepenbeek Campus. Teaching for the law program is mainly provided on the city campus in Hasselt. Students on other programs usually attend classes (in various buildings) on Diepenbeek Campus. Students can commute by public transport between the two campuses. Hasselt University has six faculties that control teaching and research. Each faculty forms an education management team (OMT) and an Examination Board for each program. Various departments operate within the faculties. These bring together all staff performing research and teaching within the same discipline. Each department, in turn, consists of one or more research groups. These are responsible for the organization of specialist research. Running across this classic tree structure of faculties, research groups, and departments are the research institutes. These groups, together with researchers from different research groups who perform research in specific priority areas. The entire research spectrum is covered in this way, from fundamental research via applied research to practical applications. The Transnational University of Limburg is a unique partnership of two universities in two countries: Hasselt University and Maastricht University. The computer science/knowledge technology, statistics, and biomedical sciences / molecular life sciences programs have already been brought into this partnership. The Bachelor of Law program is a joint initiative of Hasselt University, Maastricht University, and KU Leuven. Collaborations with other universities are also being sought in other scientific fields. Hasselt University is structured as a matrix organization, directing education, research, and valorization in an integrated manner. At the highest level, we distinguish the six faculties and schools. They manage the academic education and research policy of the faculty or school. Every faculty counts several capacity groups. They group all staff members conducting research and teaching within the same discipline. Each capacity group consists of one or more research groups responsible for a specialized research organization. The research institutes traverse this classical tree structure of faculties, capacity groups, and research groups. The six research institutes work interdisciplinary and consist of researchers from different research groups researching within a particular research area. The entire research spectrum is covered, from fundamental research via applied research to practical applications. The research institutes aim to achieve a critical mass and greater visibility, which in turn increases the research's efficiency. In the new education and research positioning of Hasselt University, the international component plays a prominent and natural role: Hasselt University aims to be a creative hub in an international knowledge and innovation web for its students, researchers, and other stakeholders. Hasselt University is innovative, result-oriented, open, social, and international but, at the same time, has a regional base.

UMONS also plays a central role in many academic and scientific collaborations worldwide, with over 300 international partnerships in more than 50 countries spanning five continents. Mobility grants awarded to UMONS come from both the European Commission and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB). The grant amounts vary from year to year, depending on the subsidies received by UMONS and depending on the evolution of the allocation rules required by the fund providers (AEF-Europe / European Commission / FWB). All students registered at UMONS on either the 1st cycle (courses in the 2nd year of a Bachelor'sBachelor's), second cycle (Master), or third cycle (Ph.D.) studies are eligible for a mobility grant unless otherwise specified in their mobility agreement. The subsidy to be given to students falls within the student mobility "stage" (placement) subsidy when the home institution awards the ECTS credits and within the student mobility "cours" (courses) subsidy when the host institution awards the ECTS credits. Since we are faced with the South'sSouth's huge needs in health, energy, environmental management, logistics, infrastructure, and academic cooperation, be a development factor? Academic cooperation helps develop teaching and research, but it can also contribute to training other people through these universities and other higher education institutions that we help to function better. Our help comes from training teachers and researchers and improving these institutions' running (student cards, computer networks, libraries, governance, communication, etc.). Those that have been trained then, undeniably, become powerful actors in development. It is on them that the other "big" cooperations will be based. Investment in human resources is indeed one of the most enduring factors. Therefore, academic cooperation is a development factor in itself, and our long-term vision can be explained with five words: "be better in the South." For a promising young scientist, opportunities should be equal in both the north and the south to prevent brain drain and facilitate these scientists'scientists' integration into the international scientific community.
