      About Me

      1. Welcome to The British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL). We are one of the leading schools in Kuala Lumpur, providing an exceptional education from Early Years through to Sixth Form, for children aged 2-18. You are considering our school for your child and hope that you can see, from the details on our website, that BSKL is an excellent choice. Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will have to make. We recognize this and at BSKL we ensure that every child achieves their potential and more. Through highly enjoyable and engaging learning experiences, pupils acquire the skills and knowledge set out in the English National Curriculum and also develop as their individuals through a broad range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities. All of our classroom teachers are UK-qualified and receive up-to-date training to ensure standards are always high. State-of-the-art technologies are integrated into our curriculum and classrooms to ensure pupils are prepared for the future. A range of rich academic resources complements our fabulous and modern campuses. All of this guarantees that every child in our care receives the best possible education. As well as academic progress, your child will develop into a responsible global citizen guided by our school’s principles of honesty, integrity, tolerance, and respect for others. Pupils are encouraged to be inquisitive and to play a part in their development, as well as being challenged and allowed to discover their abilities. We work hard to create an environment where children enjoy learning and feel safe and confident to participate, make mistakes, and have fun. Our school forms part of the British Schools Foundation (BSF), an established family of 10 schools that extend across the world in Asia, South America, and Europe. This international network provides regular and frequent opportunities for engaging with the broader BSF family. As a result, our pupils are more likely to develop ambitions and a sense of their potential that is marked by a broad, global perspective. It is our firm ambition to ensure pupils who complete their education with us are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage of their education with the strength of character to match. School Mission To provide world-class education. Guiding Principles To motivate our students to explore the extent of their intellectual and physical abilities. To uphold the values of honesty, integrity, and respect for others. To provide a vibrant, happy, and secure environment. To recruit, retain and develop high-caliber staff. To promote the general good within our community. To safeguard the long-term development and reputation of our organization. View full school
      2. BSK is proud of its reputation for academic, sporting, and creative excellence. BSK is also proud of its reputation for offering the widest range of extracurricular activities of any school in the region. Most of all, BSK is proud of the achievements of its students that provide the evidence for the claim to be Kuwait’s, Premier School. The British School of Kuwait (BSK) traces its origins to 1978 when a small kindergarten became known as The Sunshine School. Steady growth took place through the 1980s and, having recovered from the ravages of the 1990 invasion of Kuwait, by 1992 the school accommodated 550 Kindergarten and Primary age students. The decision having been made to serve the community at both Primary and Secondary levels, a move to the present site in Salwa took place, and in September 1993, newly renamed, The British School of Kuwait opened to 900 students. Currently, there are over 3200 students from Reception to Year 13 at BSK. They come from more than 70 countries and follow the National Curriculum of England through to GCSE, IGCSE, AS, and A-Level qualifications. The school provides a structured, caring, and happy environment for learning with excellent resourcing and a qualified, highly-trained, and well-motivated staff. The crest of The British School of Kuwait incorporates several aspects of the school’s history. The bold sunrise symbolizes our students’ potential, setting out on their lives of achievement. The sun also reminds us of the original Sunshine School and its climb to success. The sun is seen rising over blue water with its strong reference to Kuwait where the sun breaks daily over the Gulf on the eastern horizon. Finally, the crest is adorned with branches of laurel, a traditional accolade, in this setting celebrating academic and cultural achievement. The British School of Kuwait aims to offer its students a rigorous and rounded education that is relevant to the demands of modern life. Striving for excellence in all areas of school life is the cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Evidence for academic excellence is found by comparing the attainment levels of our students with their peers in any other international or British school. Further evidence is found in the outstanding public examination results and in the list of world-famous universities to which our students gain admission. Evidence for sporting excellence is found in the many, recently awarded, trophies and cups adorning our display cabinets. In recent years, BSK has dominated the finals in competitions organized by KFSAC and ISACK and our participation extends beyond the borders of Kuwait. Our philosophy extends to the provision of excellent extracurricular opportunities for our students. BSK offers the widest range of extracurricular opportunities of any school. From the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award with expeditions to Jordan (bronze), Cyprus (silver), and Sri Lanka (gold) to Crest Award from world-class debating to Model United Nations from LAMDA to ABRSM courses from computing to astronomy from skiing to martial arts from the Spanish Club to the Sports Leaders program… the opportunities seem endless and provide evidence of our commitment to roundedness in the education of our students. Social awareness through links with the international community is deeply embedded within the ethos of BSK. We benefit hugely from the cultures and experiences of upwards of 70 different nationalities of students. Through the links with the Goethe-Institut in Germany, the British Council, the service work of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award program, and the philanthropic efforts of the Sixth Form Charities Committee and the House charity initiative, the evidence for excellence in personal and social education are clear. Not all students and their families are ready to take advantage of the education on offer at BSK. We have a strict admissions policy that ensures our students are academically capable, highly motivated, and well-behaved. However, for our students, the environment for learning is designed to meet our aim of rigorous, rounded, and relevant education. View full school

      4. Welcome To Cascade British Nursery School in Kuwait, Where every child who walks through the door is Special. Cascade was opened by Jacqueline, a qualified British-trained primary school teacher. She has many years of teaching experience in both mainstream and special education and has taught in Scotland, Sharjah, and Kuwait. She and her excellent team of staff have worked hard to create a genuine home-from-home environment where activities are planned around each child's interests and abilities. Children learn through play and are encouraged to achieve their potential. Cascade is a British Nursery School for children of 1 - 4½ years of age. Each child is unique and special. From the age of three months to the pre-school year, every girl and boy goes through an astonishing period of development. These few years are crucial for your child’s future as he or she moves into more formal schooling and then adult life beyond. At Cascade, we aim to provide a safe, secure and caring environment for all our children. We strive to nurture your child in bright, happy, stimulating, and educationally structured surroundings. Our experienced team of Western staff realizes how important it is for your child to settle quickly and happily into our Nursery. They are experts in identifying the specific needs of your child as he or she progresses through these pre-school years. We have implemented the Early Years Foundation Stage through structured play, it is based on four principles, which are: A Unique Child – Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident, and self-assured. Enabling Environments – The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. Learning and Development – Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected. The Curriculum covers six areas of learning are personal, social, and emotional development, creative development, physical development, communication, language and literacy, knowledge and understanding of the world, problem-solving reasoning, and numeracy. These areas are equally important and depend on each other. They are delivered through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities. At all times the staff encourages a positive attitude in every child. Our holistic approach means that girls and boys participate in all Nursery activities, thus ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. With this in mind, we are very fortunate to have a large, safe, grassed garden for the exclusive use of our Nursery children. This extends our opportunities for outdoor play and physical development. 10. Situated at the very heart of this dynamic, stimulating city, the BST community is warm and friendly and offers the highest standards of pastoral care. Having developed its reputation for high-quality holistic education over more than a quarter of a century, today’s school has more than 1000 students aged 3-18, representing over 65 different nationalities. This is an inclusive school, but academic standards are high. The English National Curriculum provides the basis for smooth progression and easy transition between the Primary and Secondary sectors, and examination results have been outstanding in recent years. Our experienced teachers, largely recruited from the UK, are consummate professionals who are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that all students are offered the opportunity to fulfill their potential both in and beyond the classroom. The result is that, whether they are returning to continue their education in their home country, moving on to another international school, or seeking places at top universities around the world, BST students are invariably well-equipped to take the next step in their education. The British School in Tokyo was set up as a charitable trust in 1988 by a group of parents who wished their children to have a British-style education in Tokyo. The School was opened in 1989 on a site in Shibuya, central Tokyo, located next to and leased from, a well-respected Japanese private school, Shibuya Kyoiku Gakuen. In the early years of the School, the children were from ages 5 to 10 and the majority were British, in contrast to the situation today where the school provides education from age 3 to 18 and has over 50 nationalities, of whom over a third are neither British nor Japanese. To provide an outstanding British education in English to the international community of Tokyo. To care for our students, and to educate them following clearly stated values to bring out the best in every one of them and to help them to take the next step in their lives with confidence, conviction, and consideration for others. The British School in Tokyo will be a leader in the provision of a first-class, values-driven international education, based on the best of the English National Curriculum. We will have a reputation for excellence, with an emphasis on outstanding teaching, academic achievement, service to others, teamwork, and leadership. We are passionate about excellent teaching in every classroom. We recruit teachers only after watching them teach in their existing schools all over the world. Our teachers are innovative professionals at the cutting edge of best educational practice who provide a stimulating environment in the classroom that actively engages students and makes learning enjoyable and memorable. To maintain this level of excellence, teachers and teaching assistants take part in professional development and training throughout the year. Our teachers make a difference, in every lesson. As a result, we believe that at all levels students will get into their first choice of school, college, or university when leaving us. BST students have again produced outstanding results in the Sixth Form and at all the key stages in earlier years. Tests are taken in the Primary School at the end of Year 2 (age 6-7) and Year 6 (age 10-11). In Secondary School, IGCSE exams are taken at the end of Year 11 (age 15-16), and Sixth Form students aged 16,17, and 18 take AS exams (Year 12) and A levels (Year 13). The British School in Tokyo offers a limited number of bursaries that are intended to assist eligible families who are unable to afford the full fees. At present, the number of bursaries is limited to approximately 7% of the total student roll. This ratio may be varied in the future depending on the financial circumstances of both potential applicants and the School. To be considered for a bursary the student and the student’s family must fulfill the School’s normal admissions requirements and also meet the following additional criteria: There must be a demonstrable benefit to the student in receiving a British Education (as opposed to other systems of education available in Tokyo). There must be a verifiable inability of the family to pay the full amount of the fees the family will be asked to provide financial information sufficient to allow a detailed assessment to be made by the School this is likely to include, but not be limited to, annual tax returns and correspondence from employers a visit to the family home may be required any bursary granted will be subject to a reassessment of family means each year and maybe varied, depending on family circumstances. Priority will be given to families in which the main earner is employed full-time in the Education Sector or a not-for-profit organization such as a charity. BST makes extensive use of the rich historical, natural and cultural experiences available in Japan. Our children from Nursery upwards study the Japanese language. We maximize children’s real use of the language within the local community, taking advantage of speaking and listening opportunities right on our doorstep. For example, our Year 3 children interview people in the local area in Japanese about their hobbies, drawing on what they have learned in the classroom about describing their hobbies. The British School in Tokyo is a non-profit institution and tuition fees alone do not cover the cost of educating each student. Gifts to BST allow us to continue offering the many academic, sports, and cultural programs that have contributed to our “Excellent” grading by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. In recent years corporate and individual contributions have helped us to expand the school, refurbish and upgrade facilities at both campuses, and introduce several bursaries for eligible families who are not able to afford the full tuition fees. To continue expanding these programs, and guarantee our continued success, we depend on the generosity of our school community! View full school
      11. More and more parents want to give their children the opportunity to become truly bilingual and to embrace our globalized world. Our English Immersion Programme is designed to start your child on their journey to a bilingual life with all the joys that this will bring. Our goal is to foster the early childhood developmental milestones and to build your child’s love for learning while becoming fluent in another language! Nursery school children are the perfect age to begin learning a second language. Studies have shown that children who learn a second language during the preschool years go on to speak more fluently than those who begin to learn at an older age. In addition, bilingual children tend to be more creative, have better critical thinking skills, and a better understanding of humanity and culture. One of the reasons young children learn a new language so easily is because they learn through exploration and play. The British American Pre-School is located in an attractive building in a quiet area of Milan. The pre-school is very spacious and has every relevant facility including a large multi-function activity room, a full-sized gymnasium, and a lovely big garden, a truly excellent environment for early learning. All the classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art computers and iPads for the older children. There are sleeping facilities for the Toddler and Nursery class children. Starting school is an exciting time as children embark on new adventures in the world of learning. Our safe, nurturing, child-centered setting and high student-to-teacher ratio support each child’s unique needs and interests. We provide a tailored, multi-sensory program that offers a range of learning and developmental experiences for your child. Our focus is on fun and engaging activities that will provide play-based opportunities to promote children’s discovery of self and their environment. Children learn best by doing, and through their experiences, and active participation they blossom independently, socially, and cognitively. At BAPS we understand the diverse needs of young children and their families, and we know how vital the partnership between parents and school is in providing the best possible care for your child. We hope that you will always feel welcome to join us in class to share in your child’s development and to talk about your child’s learning journey. We feel strongly that communication between school and home is essential in maintaining our partnership, and in ensuring personalized learning opportunities for your child. View full school
      12. From the foundation of the school in 1958, we have had a clear vision of what we hope to achieve for our students. We want our Georgians to reach the highest academic standards through being analytical, critical, and compassionate thinkers so they can access the world’s best universities. We want them to be able to relate their classroom experience to the world outside so they become informed, active participants in local and world affairs. We want them to be truly international in their outlook, respectful of other cultures and attitudes, and conscious of their shared humanity. We want them to be confident leaders, ready to take a risk and make a difference in the challenging 21st-century world they will inherit. For this to happen, we take the best of British educational practice and from the rest of the world to create a wide range of learning opportunities. Our formal curriculum culminates in IGCSE exams in Year 11 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma at the end of Year 13, qualifications that are highly respected by all organizations around the world. But St George’s school offers so much more than this. St George’s British International School builds on its status as a leading British International School, providing the highest quality education in stimulating learning, teaching, and nurturing environment to ensure that every child develops his or her full potential and becomes a responsible global citizen. Our curriculum sets out the knowledge and skills that are important for our students to become successful lifelong learners, confident individuals, and responsible citizens. We bring learning to life, raise aspirations and help our students to approach existing challenges through critical and creative thinking. We prepare them to become proactive problem solvers: imaginatively seeking out opportunities for innovation in school and beyond. Working towards each student fulfilling their maximum potential, we promote self‐reliance, personal development, and empathy, valuing all members of the school community equally and taking opportunities to facilitate students working together across age groups. Importantly, we believe that cultural diversity is positive strength, and therefore we actively promote international awareness including an understanding of different ways of life. We believe that this international dimension enables us to draw on a wide pool of talents from our pupils, parents, and staff, in a sharing supportive environment. We celebrate our differences, and our different abilities, while offering them opportunities for learners to achieve their full potential. Our students are encouraged to work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others and to become responsible, self‐confident individuals, independent lifelong learners, and to acquire and apply a diverse range of transferable skills. Our staff is valued and regularly undertake professional development. They are flexible, adaptable, and ready to take on new roles and responsibilities. They aspire to motivate and inspire our students and to be positive role models for them. They seek to develop relationships with the local community and with other schools nationally and internationally and keep abreast of educational changes. We take the best from the National Curriculum and enrich it building towards the International Baccalaureate’s diploma program with its breadth and emphasis on developing the ideal learner profile. We believe in skills‐based learning to support the acquisition of knowledge. Co‐curricular activities enhance the education provided at St. George’s. We place an importance on understanding the host Italian culture and society and aim for intellectual rigor and high academic standards. We recognize the importance of and invest in, quality resources and facilities. Strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship resulting in care both for ourselves, our community, and the wider world beyond. Throughout our community, we aim to instill the values of caring for each other and also caring for the environment. We are responsible employers and aim to prepare our students for challenging times. View full school

      16. As the worlds of technology, science, and information explode around us, we are committed to arming all our students with competence: a competence that is derived from a combination of knowledge and strength of character. Mastery of skills alone will not be enough to excel in the coming age. Students will need to make informed decisions and be self-directed learners and thinkers if they are going to succeed in the modern global society. In addition to this important preparation, we are also committed to preserving our Middle Eastern ethics, culture, and religions. This is a formidable task. At NIS, we meet this challenge with vigor, determination, and hope. NIS began admitting students in 1994. We now enroll more than 1900 students from KG to 3rd Secondary. Our first group of seniors graduated in 1996. These pioneering graduates were admitted to both private and public universities in Egypt and abroad. Nefertari International School provides its students with challenging programs of international education while maintaining their cultural identity as Egyptians. NIS strives to create a disciplined, safe, happy, and caring atmosphere that encourages students to be responsible, confident, compassionate, and well-informed citizens who contribute to their local and international community. At Nefertari International Schools, NIS, we are committed to providing a supportive, happy and positive learning environment for all students to help them acquire the academic skills needed for further university education, in addition to implementing values and skills needed to become an active, balanced and compassionate citizen. NBIS Goals and Objectives To stay current in all fields of education. To provide experienced trained British staff utilizing effective teaching resources in an Egyptian context. To inspire in our students an excitement for the acquisition of knowledge, while planting the seeds of life-long learning. To train students to think critically about problems and issues, conduct independent research, organize and implement projects both individually, and as a part of a group. To provide extra-curricular activities, which complement students learning by providing interesting, and challenging opportunities outside the normal classroom environment. To emphasize the sense of belonging to our culture, by nationalizing our social studies curriculum. To teach our students ethics, good behavior, healthy habits, as well as being proud of our Egyptian identity and culture. The NBIS's new campus is highly equipped with various educational and sports facilities that help provide students with a well-rounded experience. Classrooms are spacious, air-conditioned, and well-lit. they are very well resourced with teaching material and computers. 17. Webpages around the world may be similar, but if ours encourages you to visit us in person and take a tour, we guarantee that you will be impressed with our facilities, and more importantly, how we use them. But a school is much more even than facilities, and what makes NCBIS so special, is our student body a vibrant, dynamic, inquisitive, hard-working, creative, and extremely motivated group of young people who are a joy to be with and to teach, and who graduate as “world-class scholars and more importantly first-class citizens”. While undoubtedly Cairo possesses many fine International Schools, NCBIS in New Cairo, is unique in its ethos and internationalism. As a “not for profit organization”, 100% of the fees are reinvested into the school allowing a continual upgrade of facilities and equipment, keeping us at the cutting edge of IB World Schools in the Middle East and beyond. Currently, 63 nationalities are represented at NCBIS, and by our NGO status, we must maintain at least 60% expatriate student body, which provides that immediate international identity. It can be felt as soon as you enter the campus with a multilingual “welcome” followed by a parade of the flags of many of our most representative nationalities. Once inside the school, that all-important international-mindedness becomes even more apparent as you can’t but help notice students mixing, conversing contentedly in the playground language of English, and integrating into the “one family” that we are so keen to maintain. International-mindedness is one of the key attributes of both the Student and Teacher “Learner Profile” and at NCBIS it is a key component of everything we aim for. Our school is incredibly welcoming and it is the first thing that new students comment on. We work hard to keep it that way too, providing each new student with a buddy and monitoring their integration closely. We also encourage parents to join our wonderful Parents’ Group to work closely with the school on joint initiatives, as well as to socialize both within and outside school. The group organizes regular coffee mornings, lectures, social activities, and dances and is instrumental in coordinating traditional and much-acclaimed events like Halloween and International Day. Together with the Parents’ group we also organize charity fund-raising days for our CAS groups and an annual Family Day which is the highlight of the year’s calendar. Finally, we wouldn’t be a family if we didn’t keep in touch with our alumni, sharing and celebrating their successes at university and beyond, inviting them back to tour their second home, sharing anecdotes and inspirational messages with our student body, and of course, marveling at our constant change and upgrading. We meet them in school, at universities, and will even seek them out overseas! Well, they are our extended family and NCBIS is so much more than a “school”! The NCBIS mission is to provide a learning environment that supports academic achievement whilst promoting personal growth through the attributes of the IB Learner profile, within a caring international community committed to the traditional values of honesty, courtesy, respect, integrity, and fair play. In 2021 NCBIS is an international school of renown that provides an education of excellence by which students are prepared for a rapidly changing world where skills, values, attitudes, and attributes are as important as knowledge. This education enables students to fulfill their academic, sporting, and artistic potential and develop a positive and creative mindset that enables them to achieve success at school and in later life. This is achieved in a happy atmosphere and safe and stimulating physical environment that is conducive to academic learning as well as personal and social growth. NCBIS will continue to be celebrated for its warm and caring ethos and its positive contribution to a sustainable and just world. Our Primary school students follow the Primary Years Programme (PYP), a course of study that ‘prepares students to be active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. The Dutch stream, an integral part of our school history and culture, also bases their curriculum on the PYP but modify it where necessary. In Key Stage 3, the first three years of secondary school, we offer the English National Curriculum leading to the IGCSE / GCSE examinations in Key Stage 4. Our senior students have the opportunity to take the prestigious IB Diploma, an internationally renowned program of study that opens the doors to the best universities in the UK and around the world. None of this would be possible without teachers of the highest caliber, recruited from the best UK and international schools worldwide. In all our endeavors we are fortunate to receive tremendous parental support. We foster a sense of community and understand that positive home-school links are key to our success. We proudly celebrate our successes but at the same time, we are proactive and forward-looking and realize that change and improvement must be constant. View full school
      18. Sharm International British School provides high-quality education for students aged between two and fifteen years old, in a stimulating, caring, and quality learning environment. We teach the full English curriculum (English, Mathematics, Science, etc) with additional Arabic and Islamic studies. Instruction through the school is led by fully qualified and experienced teachers from the UK, who are English native language speakers, supported by teaching assistants. Student numbers in each class are small, providing excellent teacher-to-student ratios, allowing us to maximize teaching time and meet the needs of individual children. Moreover, our specialist teaching of languages, ICT, and PE ensures that the students benefit from the highest levels of input at all times. The school is registered, under the name of the Sharm el-sheik Society for Cultural Care, with the Egyptian Ministry of Social Affairs as a non-profit entity. In April 2016, Sharm International British School gained accreditation from the British Council and became a registered Cambridge Associate School. Following this, the school was granted a license from the Egyptian Ministry of Education, making us fully accredited. The mission of Sharm International British School is to provide a supportive and caring environment for all its students. Children are encouraged to reach their full academic potential and be enabled to develop physically, spiritually, morally, creatively, and socially. A love of learning and positive self-image is highly valued, as are independence and responsibility. The School ethos is underpinned by respect and appreciation for the variety of beliefs and cultures within our international community, as well as a pride in our British identity. The English curriculum is broad and balanced and provides for the academic, moral, physical, creative, personal, and social development of every child. Children are taught in small classes, by fully qualified British teachers who deliver the curriculum in the English language. Some year groups are currently combined due to low student numbers. We anticipate that this will change next year as student numbers increase, giving us the funds to employ individual teachers for most year groups. Specialist subjects are taught by different teachers, who are all qualified in their particular field of teaching. The school follows the National Curriculum for England and Wales, together with the Cambridge International curriculum, to ensure consistency throughout the whole school. View full school

At Maadi British International School we are committed to providing a happy, positive learning environment where children, teenagers, and adults are: Successful independent and collaborative learners Confident, cooperative team players and responsible leaders Flexible, resourceful, and resilient Reflective, honest, and trustworthy Responsible, caring global citizens The English National Curriculum (ENC) is widely regarded as a rigorous program that ensures a high-quality provision. It is recognized and valued by the international community. As a British school overseas, our curriculum is firmly based on the ENC and fully reflects recent changes made by the UK government. Equally, our curriculum is very much a learning program for the 21st century, carefully tailored to meet the needs of our global students. In other words, whilst the ENC directs what to teach, our curriculum provides a unique vehicle of delivery, the how to teach. At MBIS, the programs of study carry the learning objectives of the ENC through topics that have real appeal and relevance to the children. The children are truly ‘hooked’ by what they are learning and consequently, their motivation, application, and quality of learning are all enhanced. In our creative curriculum, the teaching is thematic, with subjects across the curriculum meaningfully linked, supporting children’s understanding of ‘the big picture. Learning is making connections and our creative curriculum explicitly supports this. MBIS has a deserved reputation for the highest academic standards and a caring and inclusive approach to education. Expansion and relocation have allowed us to combine this with excellent facilities including spacious classrooms, an indoor 25m swimming pool, multi-purpose hall and theatre, two computer suites, a science laboratory, art and design center, a cookery room, a specialist Nursery section, and well-equipped play facilities. With each stage of our growth, we have built confidently upon our achievements to enhance the learning experiences of our children. 22. El Alsson School was established in 1982 as a private English school, licensed by the Egyptian Ministry of Education. In 1992, in response to numerous requests by parents for an alternative style of education to the Ministry’s National program, the English Academy International as it was called at the time was opened, offering the British curriculum leading to Cambridge IGCSE, A/S and A-Levels. From when the British section was introduced the two sections of El Alsson have shared the same buildings and facilities as they still do today, and teaching staff has always been a mixture of Egyptian and expatriate teachers working together. All children entering the school in Reception and Year 1 (ages 4 and 5) followed the English Curriculum for two years, and thereafter parents were asked to decide whether they wanted their children to continue with an International education or switch to the Egyptian Ministry of Education National program. “Education is about preparing children for life” Over and above traditional teaching is another level of learning what good schools offer. Good schools offer ‘extracurricular activities,’ where children learn through clubs, sports, musical productions and drama, trips, and excursions. Good schools also believe that they should be preparing students for life, and provide academic and social help, guidance, counseling, and special educational support, and in particular, programs that develop character and confidence. Personal, social, and health education features in the timetable of good schools. Children learn about themselves, about relationships with their friends, about honesty and morals, Learning to Lead, MUN’s and senior school Leadership Programs, charity work helping others by giving time and effort, not just money, learning to care, advising, and supporting younger children, learning to hold fair and balanced opinions and learning to listen to others. Alongside good grades and academic achievements, when these values are learned we believe our students are ready to go out into the real world. In 2001, El Alsson International School was approved as a center for Edexcel GCSE, A/S, and A-Level programs as an alternative to the examination-based, cramming-style IGCSE system, and we dropped the name English Academy and became the El Alsson British International School. We believed that the way IGCSE’s were delivered was not very beneficial to the students and time has proved us right. With consistently excellent results, GCSE’s A/S and A-Levels have become very popular and well-received by both students and parents. For all of our students, El Alsson has been able to provide an interesting and demanding curriculum with a wide range of subjects available, taught by experienced UK teachers. The school features a Performing Arts Building with music rooms, a theatre, and a radio broadcasting studio (to open September 2018). It also features a Sports Hall with a pool, basketball courts, and dancing and fitness rooms (to open September 2018). This is in addition to the outdoor football and basketball courts as well as the children’s playgrounds. To date, although we only offer the British and American Education Systems, all sections of the school teach the Ministry of Education Arabic and Religion programs for Egyptian students. 25. The British School, Alexandria was established in 1984 on the grounds of the British Consulate. Located in the residential district of Roushdy, the school benefits from easy access to local resources. Over the past 30 years it has expanded onto five further sites, currently educates around 433 students aged 3 to 18 from 23 different countries, and is continuing to grow. The School aims to offer the highest quality of British-style education to the local and expatriate communities. Most of our pupils remain at The British School, Alexandria for their entire school careers which gives us the time to build very strong working relationships with pupils and parents. The British School, Alexandria employs full-time teachers with British teaching qualifications, supported by qualified part-time staff and teaching assistants. Class sizes are small and the school has a lovely family atmosphere. The school prides itself in its pastoral care and every child is treated as an individual. Expectations are high and SAT results are generally above those expected for the age group and IGCSE/GCSE results are excellent. Language support is available for non-English speaking students. All students study Arabic as the host country's language. An extensive extra curricula program is offered. A "Friends of the School" group organizes regular activities, many of which raise funds both for the School and local charities. Here in Alexandria staff feel safe and secure and can go about their daily business as usual. The general populace is welcoming and genuinely interested in foreigners who choose to live and work in Alexandria. We believe we are living through a seminal moment in the history of the region and are eye witness to the ongoing development of democracy in Egypt. Through our Young Arab Voices project, which seeks to facilitate debate and discussion about the role of democracy and citizenship throughout the Middle East, we are actively involved in articulating the aspirations of a generation. Our school operates in English. All employees whenever and wherever possible use English as the language of day-to-day communication. All meetings and business are conducted in English unless it is essential to speak in Arabic. Some staff may operate day-to-day in Arabic and that is acceptable. e.g. cleaners, campus staff, some security staff. At our school, we value the Arabic language. We develop positive attitudes to Arabic culture and heritage. We expect that the majority of our students will be fluent bi-lingual in Arabic and English. Also, at our school to help our mainly non-native English speakers experience as much English as possible we speak English all the time. The Trips Calendar gives you an overview of the exciting range of planned trips throughout the academic year. It is the policy of The British School, Alexandria to encourage educational visits of all kinds as part of the experience that we offer to our students. We believe that trips are an essential part of learning, allowing students to develop a whole range of skills such as investigation and team working. Trips help to widen the students’ appreciation of the world that we live in as global citizens. Some trips will be of direct curriculum relevance and maybe a compulsory or desirable part of the preparation for examinations while others will be more generally educational in social, cultural, and recreational ways. Some trips are well-established and have taken place for several years, whilst others will be new additions to BSA. All visits off the school premises, require careful planning before permission for the trip is sought. Safety is always our number one priority. English is at the heart of learning at The British School. All subjects (apart from foreign languages) are taught through the medium of English and English is the working language of the school, with students and staff being expected to speak English at all times. We have extremely high expectations of all our students and, on leaving school, students will have attained a very good level of both the spoken and written language. At the end of Year 10, all students take IGCSE English as a Second Language and at the end of Year 11, all students take IGCSE First Language English. In addition, IGCSE English Literature is a compulsory subject. Each year a small number of students take AS and/or A2 level English Language or Literature. All of the external exams taken in English are Cambridge International Examinations. Although formal examinations are important, we also make the learning of English enjoyable. Common features of all lessons are role-played, group work, discussions, hot-seating, and debating. Students also take part in at least one drama production per year. We have well-stocked libraries in all departments and students are very much encouraged to make good use of these facilities. In addition, IT is used to support student learning. We take every opportunity to invite visiting speakers into the classroom and to take students to any relevant events being held in Alexandria or Cairo. In addition, students in the Senior School take part in the annual BSME Debating Competition held in Bahrain and this allows our students to practice their debating skills in a competitive, yet friendly, manner. We hold workshops at various points during the year both to inform parents about any developments and to advise them how best to support their children with English. View full school
