      3. The University of Freiburg, officially the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, is a public research university located in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The university was founded in 1457 by the Habsburg dynasty as the second university in Austrian-Habsburg territory after the University of Vienna. Today, Freiburg is the fifth-oldest university in Germany, with a long tradition of teaching the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The university is made up of 11 faculties and attracts students from across Germany and over 120 other countries. International students constitute about 16% of total student numbers. Named as one of Germany's elite universities by academics, political representatives, and the media, the University of Freiburg stands amongst Europe's top research and teaching institutions. With its long-standing reputation of excellence, the university looks both to the past to maintain its historic academic and cultural heritage and to the future, developing new methods and opportunities to meet the needs of a changing world. The University of Freiburg has been home to some of the greatest minds of the Western tradition, including such eminent figures as Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, Rudolf Carnap, David Daube, Johann Eck, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Friedrich Hayek, Edmund Husserl, Friedrich Meinecke, Max Weber, and Paul Uhlenhuth. Also, 19 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Freiburg, and 15 academics have been honored with the highest German research prize, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize while working at the University of Freiburg.
      4. The Hochschule für Musik Freiburg offers artistic and pedagogical training in a broad spectrum of musical fields and the possibility of earning a Ph.D. in musicology or music education at one of Germany's most renowned schools of music. The Hochschule für Musik Freiburg has attracted a multitude of enthusiastic educators, scholars, and prominent musicians in the past, like Aurèle Nicolet, Edith Picht-Axenfeld, Wolfgang Fortner, Carl Seemann, Vitaly Margulis, Ulrich Koch, Wilfried Gruhn, Lars Ulrich Abraham, Erich Doflein, Heinz Holliger, and Klaus Huber. These figures helped make the institution into what it is today. They had a decisive formative impact on generations of students, including the violinist Daishin Kashimoto (1st Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic), the violist Tabea Zimmermann, the conductor and composer Hans Zender, the cellists Jean-Guilhem Queyras and Lukas Fels (Arditti Quartet), the pianist Bernd Glemser, the singer Rachel Harnisch, the video and performance artist Nam Jun Paik, and the composer Wolfgang Rihm. Founded in 1946, the school has its roots in the baroque Wentzinger House on the Cathedral Square in the historic old town's heart. Today, classes are held in a modern building bathed in natural light and surrounding a spacious foyer on a landscaped campus on Freiburg's east side. Our students experience Freiburg as a town with a tremendous civic spirit that boasts an unusually dynamic music scene relative to its size and is blessed with a mild climate and a rich culinary tradition. With a choice of 35 major fields, the school offers a musical education tailored to its students' individual needs and skills. The educational offerings are organized into eight-degree programs, ranging from bachelor of music to doctorate. The Freiburg Academy for Young Musicians (FAB) offers a first-rate preparatory course for young musical talents aged 12 or older. Credits from the course are taken into account in the entrance examination and a later study at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. The Bachelor of Music is an eight-semester degree program for beginning students. It may be earned in any of 28 instrumental, vocal, or other significant fields, and students can choose between an artistic or pedagogical emphasis. Graduates of a bachelor's program have the opportunity to continue studying toward the Master of Music in an additional four semesters. The master may be earned as a consecutive course of study following an accredited bachelor degree in the same major field or as a non-consecutive course in the fields of elementary-level music education, ensemble singing, film music, ear training, historical performance practice, art song, music and movement/rhythmic training, or music theory. Highly talented graduates of a master of music program can take a two- or four-semester postgraduate degree program in Concert Exam/Master Class. Education as a church musician begins with the Bachelor of Music/Church Music, an eight-semester course of study for beginning students. An additional four-semester postgraduate course of study leads to the Master of Music/Church Music. The degree program School Music prepares beginning students and students transferring from other institutions for a career as a music teacher in secondary schools. The course of study typically takes nine semesters to complete and ends with a state examination. The Hochschule für Musik Freiburg confers the degree Doctor of Philosophy in musicology and music education. The prerequisite for admission to Doctoral Studies is the successful completion of a course of study in the appropriate field of at least eight semesters at a university or other qualified higher education institution. The diverse course offerings encompass a continually evolving network of interdisciplinary partnerships, projects for encouraging reflection, and masterclasses, all of which serve the common goal of forming mature and intelligent musicians who know what, how, and why they are playing, singing, or teaching. The Hochschule für Musik Freiburg hosts several specialized institutes, each with a specific educational or research emphasis. One of the oldest is the New Music Institute, founded in 1964 by Wolfgang Fortner and expanded by Klaus Huber. It has four composition classes, its ensemble, a studio for electronic music and acoustics called "Selma," its concert series, and an impressive library for new music. The Freiburg Institute for Music Medicine (fim) was founded in 2005 in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg. It is engaged in research on typical health problems confronted by musicians, prophylaxis, optimization of performance, and the physiological and psychological foundations of vocal functions and music-making. The Center for Music Medicine at the Freiburg University Medical Center is available to students as a therapeutic option. The Institute of Music Theater carries out ambitiously directed, staged, and conducted music theater projects, giving students the experience of playing roles in professional theater production: from experimental plays and debut performances to classics of the opera repertoire early music. The Institute of Historical Performance Practice is devoted to profound inquiry into historically informed interpretational approaches, an area in which the school has been intimately engaged for many years. Many members of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, for instance, are alumni of the Musikhochschule Freiburg. The international exchange of students and faculty are becoming more and more essential and is promoted accordingly at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. For example, by the end of the academic year 2008/09, the school had signed ERASMUS agreements with 41 other higher education institutions. Also, the school has signed direct agreements with six partner institutions: the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (USA) the Academy of Music in Odesa (Ukraine) the Frederik Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw (Poland) the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (Australia) the University of Arts in Kyoto (Japan) the University of Toronto (Canada) All agreements are continually evaluated for their efficiency and strategic relevance for students and the school itself as a higher education institution. The intensive practical work being done at the school is manifested in over 450 concerts, evening lectures, opera performances, and academic events per year, which are an essential element of cultural life in Freiburg's music town. Our students are active in numerous ensembles at the school, including the Freiburg Drum Ensemble, the orchestra, the choir, the chamber orchestra, the chamber choir, and the school's big band, as well as the Schola Gregoriana and the Women's schola Exsulta Sion Freiburg. 5. Already a comprehensive university at its founding in 1457, the University of Freiburg still offers undergraduate and graduate studies and professorial qualifications in all critical disciplines today: the humanities, natural and engineering sciences, medicine, law, and theology. This diversity also provides an ideal environment for innovative interdisciplinary studies. Many famous philosophers, top researchers, and Nobel laureates have taught and researched at the University of Freiburg. The university’s recent success in the “Excellence” competitions, 2007 for research and 2009 for instruction, testifies its position as one of the leading universities of the 21st century. More than 24,000 students from over 100 nations are matriculated in 180-degree programs at 11 faculties. More than 7,000 professors and lecturers and many other employees put in their effort every day – and experience that family friendliness, equal opportunity, and environmental protection are more than just empty phrases here. Numerous former students and benefactors and sponsors intensify a culture of dynamic exchange with the city, the region, and the international scientific community. These groups work to give the University of Freiburg the vitality that will continue to provide fertile ground for outstanding achievements in the future. We are always eager to welcome more intelligent minds to our university. The University of Freiburg has received multiple State Teaching Awards, an honor given by the Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg to promote instruction at the state’s higher education institutions. The award was conferred for the first time in 1993. Since this initial success, the University of Freiburg has won the award again and again. The University of Freiburg was among the winners of the nationwide “Excellent Teaching” competition in 2009. Organized by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Stifterverband for German Science and Research, the competition recognizes innovative instructional concepts. The Freiburg Academy of Continuing Education (FRAUW) coordinates continuing education programs for those already working full-time. These programs include certificate courses designed to provide a further theoretical grounding for practical work experience and a selection of master programs, which can also be taken as distance learning programs. Academically sound and at the same time practically oriented, these interdisciplinary continuing education programs can open up new horizons for your career or even provide the foundation for a change of professional emphasis. The University of Freiburg is one of Europe’s strongest research universities. Thanks to its broad spectrum of academic fields, the University of Freiburg has excellent potential for innovative fundamental research – both at the core of individual disciplines and in collaborative interdisciplinary research. Freiburg researchers maintain close contact with other researchers at all levels – both locally and worldwide – at other universities, research institutions, and industry partners. The University of Freiburg is part of a global network encompassing over 300 partnerships with prestigious higher education institutions on all five continents. In the 2015/16 winter semester, more than 4000 international students from around 130 countries were matriculated at the university – more than ever before. The university also has around 900 international employees from 80 countries in its academic, administrative, and technical staff. View full university
      6. We have been a state-accredited university since 1971. The German Council of Science and Humanities has rated our educational quality as excellent. All programs of study are accredited. We are a small university with around 1000 students. We still take great care to foster close contact between students and lecturers, avoiding anonymous and impersonal mass events and overcrowded lectures. With our hands-on practical training, we ensure a fast career entry: 89% of our graduates have entered into employment within a year after graduating. Our research is carried out on an international level under the umbrella of FIVE – Forschungs- und Innovationsverbund a der Evangelischen Hochschule e.V. (Research and Innovation Group at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Freiburg), with the critical research areas revolving around gender research, childhood education, civil society, and demographic change. We also have a lot to offer professionals: Masters's degree programs, certified advanced education, qualifications, and symposiums. We make obtaining a doctorate possible through cooperation with universities and universities of education. Internationalization is actively engaged throughout the whole university - for international and intercultural competencies are essential for (almost) everyone nowadays, not only when planning to work abroad. All Bachelor programs include the option of theory- and practice-oriented semesters of study and internships or short programs to be carried out abroad. We cooperate with around twenty partner universities worldwide: Belém, Copenhagen, Seville, or Vienna. Starting with the winter semester 2015/2016, the Bachelor program Social Work has offered the special certificate "International Social Work." Students opting for the additional qualification RECOS – cooperation between universities from the Germany / France / Switzerland tripoint - will gain knowledge about the political, economic, legal, and social situation in our neighboring countries and the challenges that social work and education are currently facing. Studying abroad does not leave you strapped for cash; we offer financial support in the form of various scholarships or grants: ERASMUS+, Baden-Württemberg scholarships, UNIBRAL, PROMOS, and Brot für die Welt (Bread for the World – Protestant Development Service). Students completing their degree in Germany without an integrated study abroad program are still able to gain international and intercultural experiences at our university: we invite lecturers and students from partner universities to Freiburg regularly, as well as experts from foreign companies and institutions, which allow them to share their perspectives and worldviews with us in seminars and lectures. The International Office of the university gives advice and support to students with an immigrant background and students from abroad. Our special offers include support by student tutors and lecturers, seminars "German for non-native speakers," and special scholarships from DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). Our university offers various formats to pursue advanced scientific education for different professional fields: ranging from symposiums or seminars to Masters's degree programs. There are modules offered on various welfare systems, and different European approaches to Social Work are examined. Students must study 90 ECTS over the two-year duration of the program. Thousands of international students are enrolled at German universities and colleges each year. These students enrich the university community both culturally and academically. To appreciate this fact, the German Academic Exchange Service provides funding to outstanding international students. The prize is worth 1,000 Euros and is awarded annually at the beginning of the academic year in October. Our University is committed to the integration of international students. This commitment commenced in 2010 and was supported from 2010 through to 2012 by the DAAD PROFIT program. The University hosts cooking workshops, informal get-togethers, training, cultural events, and movie nights to promote the international integration. These events are open to ALL students, staff, and faculty of the University. We have a close relationship with our Japanese partner, Mie University, and organize lecture tours, encourage student and staff mobility, and support joint cross-cultural studies on support frameworks in the education and care sectors. Mie University offers programs in medicine and nursing, and educational science, where students benefit from the University's on-campus special needs school. The KH Freiburg assists international students with settling in and adjusting to their new life in Freiburg. This program aims to support international students' social integration at the KH Freiburg and promote intercultural exchange among national and international students. 10.
