- We are a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) magnet residential high school for scholars in grades 9-12 who enjoy stretching their brains in new and challenging directions. Our students hail from across the state of Maine and around the world. They come for an inquiry, camaraderie, and a unique high school experience. Here students, staff, and faculty engage in energetic intellectual sparring served up with encouragement and support. Why Limestone? Following the 1994 closure of Loring Air Force Base, the Maine State Legislature chartered and funded the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) at the site of the Limestone High School. MSSM also acquired the former nearby elementary school and promptly converted it to a 150-bed dormitory. The fall of 2017 saw the first time we hosted our varsity athletic program independent from the Limestone Eagles, LCS, as they recently merged with Caribou High School. The MSSM Penguins enjoy two varsity level athletic teams in all three seasons, both boys and girls. The inaugural fall season bodes well for our scholar-athletes as both soccer teams qualified for the play-offs while several of the cross-country runners advanced to the State meet. Some twenty-plus years later (we hosted our first reunion, the 20th, in 2016) MSSM continues to prepare its students for admission to the world’s top universities and colleges, and we enjoy a hundred percent placement rate year after year. Although a majority of our graduates enter STEM-related fields, all disciplines are being represented. It is fascinating to learn of our alumni’s multi-faceted passions that lead them around the globe but, thankfully, many find their way back to the State of Maine. Throughout the years, MSSM continues to rank strongly in such publications as US News and World Report. As a member of the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools (NCSSS), MSSM strives to remain current in STEM education. The Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) brings together and helps a group of Maine's most academically motivated high school students become innovative, well-rounded scholars with the ability to develop, investigate, and communicate critical ideas that improve the human condition and benefit the state of Maine. The school builds and shares a rigorous curriculum that exceeds state educational standards while emphasizing connections between science, mathematics, and the humanities. MSSM extends its mission by fostering a statewide, year-round community of innovative learners that includes many of Maine's students, educators, and the general public. MSSM achieves its mission by: Providing a rigorous, immersive, student-centered curriculum that emphasizes the connections between math, science, and the humanities including post-AP courses and culminating in opportunities for authentic research and community service. Presenting students with supportive opportunities to realize their personal and professional aspirations in Maine both through nurturing, challenging on-campus programs and through partnerships with research and higher education institutions throughout the state and beyond. Creating a supportive, residential environment and academic community that promotes personal development, leadership, service, and academic success. Developing special programs to inspire younger students while also serving as a professional development partner for Maine’s teaching community. The administration, faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) are committed to providing academic excellence to enhance previous student knowledge, as well as to prepare students for future studies. The opportunity to attend MSSM is a privilege, and each student can make the most of this experience by being dedicated to the academic and residential programs. Graduates of MSSM have experienced a well-defined curriculum based upon academic standards fostering both academic discipline and honesty. All students live in residence to fully participate in this scholastic program of excellence with students who share similar interests. The nurturing of this educational community – the integration of the academic and residential components – is crucial to success at MSSM. Students are responsible for taking advantage of the academic and extra-curricular pursuits available at MSSM and for supporting community members in both their academic and personal development. A collaborative, inclusive community that engages, educates, and supports students. Residential Life is committed to creating an engaged, respectful, and inclusive community. We provide an environment that is safe, well-maintained, and sustainable. Residential Life provides a meaningful and intentional learning experience that ensures the exploration of diversity, leadership, and wellness. Your USM experience is about preparing you academically for your future. However, it is also about the people you meet here and the experiences you have with them inside and outside the classroom. At USM, we support our residential students by assigning all first-year residential students to a Living Learning Community (LLC). Your LLC assignment is based on the COR lab class you choose with your Academic Advisor during your initial Advising and Course Selection (ACS) meeting. These LLCs are not connected to specific academic majors; instead, you can choose what best fits your interests. Your housing assignment coincides with the COR lab class that you have chosen, allowing you to live and learn with a smaller cohort of students who share a common interest in that community. In addition to connecting you with peers who have similar interests, living in university housing gives you special access to USM professors and staff, exclusive programming and services, and invitations to targeted social events. Your COR lab is an experiential learning environment that connects you with peers, faculty, and staff through project-based learning and trips. It is designed to help you connect with both the USM community and the wider community to take advantage of the variety of opportunities to expand your learning outside of the classroom. At the University of Southern Maine (USM), you'll have exciting opportunities for engagement in the classroom, lab, and the community. Wherever you are in your academic career, our goal is to make your admissions experience smooth and positive every step of the way. Welcome to USM. USM is committed to academic quality that is affordable, flexible, and meaningful. Choose from a broad spectrum of programs, with both on-campus and online options. Graduate education at USM is designed to be flexible and highly relevant to our region's economic, health, and civic needs and the communities we serve. We offer master's and doctoral degree programs, as well as certificates of advanced study (post-master's) and graduate certificates (post-baccalaureate), some of which are offered entirely online. At USM, international students from around the world contribute to the growing multicultural environment of our region. We provide ongoing advising and support services to help our international students — both undergraduate and graduate — take full advantage of university and community resources, engage with the community, and achieve their goals while at USM. At USM, our experienced research faculty and staff take pride in our collaborative partnering with organizations and communities throughout the nation. With advanced degrees and extensive experience in multiple academic disciplines, public policy, and law, we provide global, multidisciplinary approaches and resources to complex issues. Using research and policy analysis, training, technical assistance, and program development and implementation, faculty and staff apply a practical approach to help translate best practices into everyday practice for business clients, government agencies, and communities. On December 26, 1878, 700 people braved a snowstorm to hear 14 speeches, one of which clocked in at more than one hour, at the opening of Corthell Hall, the first university building in Gorham. The Gothic-style building was constructed for $23,170 and dedicated to teachers' education, who were in short supply. (By comparison, USM's new residence hall, complete with apartment/suite style quarters, carries a $21 million price tag.)Some 40 years later, soon after World War I, Portland University opened on the second floor of a commercial building, located just off Monument Square in downtown Portland. The university was established in response to the lack of educational opportunities for accountants. On September 6, 1988, USM's Lewiston-Auburn College opened its doors on Lewiston's Westminster Street to 673 students. In January of 1989, LAC enrolled 840 students, 167 more than the first semester. Enrollment has continued to grow at LAC, but it is only one measure of the region's support for the college. LAC's establishment and growth directly result from the interdisciplinary nature and community focus of its curriculum. View full university

- The University of Maine at Farmington is more than a school. It is a place where you go to learn more than what is in the textbook. It is where you go to learn what you want to do with your life. Farmington is where you go to learn how to carry yourself. To gain confidence in yourself. To learn HOW to think, not WHAT to think. To explore new things about the world and yourself. To learn what your passion is. Peacefully nestled in the spectacular lakes & mountains region of western Maine, UMF is Maine's public liberal arts college, offering quality programs in teacher education, human services, and arts and sciences. The campus is in historic downtown Farmington, just a short walk away from coffee shops, funky stores, restaurants, banks, bookstores, a multi-screen movie theater, and a whole lot more. Our perfect location combines the active outdoor lifestyle with the arts & smarts of a small college town. With enrollment at around 1,600 full-time students, UMF is about the same size as many of New England's most selective private colleges and offers many of the same advantages, yet at a very affordable price — providing a tremendous college value in a spectacular natural setting. Established in 1864 as Maine's first public institution of higher education, the University of Maine at Farmington is a founding member of The Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), an exclusive national group of public colleges and universities committed to providing superior liberal arts and sciences education. As a premier teacher education and public liberal arts college for the State of Maine, the University of Maine at Farmington prepares students for engaged citizenship, enriching professional careers, and enduring love of learning. Given its history since 1864 of educating teachers and its distinctive contemporary mission as a public liberal arts college, the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) has consistently been rooted in a strong tradition of education in service to the public interest. In embracing this tradition, UMF seeks to graduate individuals who will live purposeful, ethical, and personally rewarding lives and who will strengthen the social fabric of the communities they inhabit in Maine and beyond. We recognize that success depends upon our ability to preserve continued, affordable access to higher education. The University's focus is undergraduate education in a residential setting. UMF also provides limited graduate education and welcomes commuter students and continuing education opportunities where regional and statewide needs correspond with academic strength areas in the University. Through its focus on high-quality academic programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, and selected professional fields, the University challenges students to be active citizens in a campus community that helps them find and express with confidence their voices, teaches them the humility to seek wisdom from others, and prepares them for ongoing explorations of how knowledge can be put to use for their benefit and the common good. Across our programs, academic rigor matters, as does a commitment to experience-based learning that enlivens theoretical understandings of different disciplines and the relationship of those studies to a rapidly changing world. An ethic of civic-mindedness and individual and collective duty to foster positive social change is realized through the practice of liberal learning and a recognition that innovation, collaboration, and service with community partners is fundamental to the educational enterprise. UMF's sense of place is shaped by the western Maine region's aesthetic, environmental, recreational, and intellectual heritage. The bounty of the landscape and the locale contributes materially to a range of academic fields at UMF, the exciting diversity of the extra- and co-curricular life of the University, and our reciprocal relationships in support of the vital work of our neighbors in western Maine. To fulfill its complementary responsibilities to the region and the State, the University also reaches out to national and international domains to broaden students' educational experience and assure that they are well prepared for employment and citizenship in richly diverse and global contexts. For many of you, going off to college will be your first taste of independent living. What an exciting adventure! You can make a fresh new start. Become whomever you want to be. Meet new people from all over. Embrace it. Of course, going to college is about taking classes, doing research, diving deep into academics, working with your professors, and so forth. But it is more than that. Where you choose to spend your college years — and with whom — is what you will cherish long after you have graduated. It is where you go to learn more than what is in the textbook. It is where you go to learn what you want to do with your life. To learn how to carry yourself. To gain confidence in yourself. To learn how to think, not what to think. To explore new things about the world and yourself. To learn what your passion is. View full university

- VIDEOS UMFK will nurture and engage a diversity of learners and aspiring professionals in Maine's rural communities and beyond through affordable, technologically-enhanced, and professionally-focused educational programs. The University of Maine at Fort Kent will become a model "rural university" in New England, creating pathways to educational opportunity and professional success for rural communities and people. Students who attend UMFK, whether they are residents on the campus or visit their classrooms using the Internet, discover the return for the time they have invested is far more than merely acquiring the knowledge and skills they need to achieve their goals. The university faculty and staff provide one-on-one support that, in addition to helping our students achieve success and overcome obstacles, has the result of passing to our graduates a creative work ethic that reflects the reputation the people of the local communities have across the state. Employers know that persons with a St. John Valley connection work harder and smarter than any other New England group. And we do it without breaking the bank. UMFK has earned numerous accolades from prestigious organizations such as the Princeton Review and U.S. World News and Report, which identify us as one of the most affordable universities. In fact, according to a recent report, graduates of the University of Maine at Fort Kent carry the least amount of average education debt upon graduation than any public college or university in the nation. Yet the college experience is more than gaining a diploma with a prestigious reputation for formidable working graduates and fun-filled days in a wilderness paradise. Students need to explore the world, and UMFK is a comfortable base for gaining urban experiences in international metropolises. A couple of hours west of Fort Kent is Quebec City while Bangor and coastal Maine are south. UMFK is at the center of the Lands and Forests' Acadia, a region where French Acadians maintain and celebrate their cultural identity. Students from UMFK, which has a higher percentage of international students than any other university in New England, immerse themselves in a cultural opportunity that is unique in the world. The learning opportunities at UMFK have become a model of a "rural university" that other New England campuses attempt to emulate. How do we do it? It's a simple approach. We create pathways to educational opportunity and professional success for rural communities and people by nurturing and engaging our students to become diverse learners and aspiring professionals. Our students take advantage of the most affordable, technologically-enhanced, and professionally-focused educational programs in the nation. We use our distinctive rural-serving advantage to design and deliver rural education opportunities to provide graduates who are globally prepared and give leadership to rural communities anywhere on the planet. UMFK provides educational access and services, which bring 21st-century skills and leadership to people throughout Maine and the United States and from across international boundaries who share rural life and work values. If you are neither a U.S. Citizen nor an eligible noncitizen, you do not qualify for U.S. Federal financial aid. Student employment may be available through the University work-study program. This program usually allows a student to work 7-8 hours a week on campus. To be considered for this type of employment, a University work-study application is required. A limited amount of University money may be available to assist students who may not qualify for assistance through the Federal Work-Study Program. Students are limited to part-time employment during the school term but may work 40 hours per week (for an average of 7.5 weeks) if employed under the summer University Work-Study Program. Eligibility is not based on need. The FAFSA is not required to be considered for this type of assistance. Work-study earnings are paid by check every two weeks. On February 21, 1878, Maine governor Selden Connor approved and signed an act to establish a training school for teachers in the Madawaska territory. This step meant that people in the region could be trained to teach at schools within the environment and thus begin educating and "Americanizing" the St. John Valley people. An amount of $1000 was set aside in the state treasury to establish and maintain what became commonly known as the Madawaska Training School. In the early years of the school's history, the location for the training of teachers alternated between Fort Kent and Van Buren, and in 1884 the school serving the lower section of the territory moved from Van Buren to Grand Isle. Then in 1886, issues of overcrowding in the Fort Kent location were addressed for the first time. Each year enrollment numbers had increased, and applicants had to be turned down for want of better accommodations by this time. Vital Cyr, the first principal of the Madawaska Training School, described the existing schoolhouse in the Fort Kent area as "small and cold" and that "no changes or repairs" had been made to the school buildings. He summarized his position by stating that "at Fort Kent, a new schoolhouse is much needed," hoping that the state would soon remedy the situation in the way of new buildings. A university of continued academic growth and diversity, the University of Maine at Fort Kent's growth has been dramatically influenced by the rich history and the region it serves. Born of the need to educate the local culture, the University of Maine at Fort Kent continues to live up to its academic excellence history. Though it now serves the global community, UMFK will always be a part of the rich cultural history of the St. John Valley.
