UAP is the only art university in Poland that provides education not only in the field of art. Students can also choose engineering and purely theoretical fields of study. The extensive university structure and highly qualified tutors, whose number is proportional to the number of students, allow for the development of excellent student-tutor relations. Each project implemented in art and design studios is an experiment. All tasks are open and performed with the active participation of professors, assistant professors, assistants, and technical staff. UAP has the most open structure of all the art schools in Poland. This means that all art and design studios, laboratories, courses, and workshops are available to all students, regardless of their selected field of study. Poznan University of Physical Education is the oldest sports university in Poland and the third oldest in Europe. It is the only university in the region offering courses with coaches of world sport stars, lecturers with many years of academic experience, and young academic teachers. A modern sport and education center is located in the very heart of the city. The University has modernized facilities, including a sports center with a gym, an indoor cycling and aerobics room, a swimming pool with a sports recovery facility, a multifunctional stadium with a field hockey field, tennis courts, and fencing halls. The first Poznan academic school, known as the Lubransky Academy was created in 1519. Four hundred years later, a university in Poznan, called the Piast University, was founded. Its name derived from the first Polish royal dynasty. The Pharmaceutical Department was formed in 1919 and a year later the Faculty of Medicine was founded within it. The Chair of Dentistry was created in 1929. The first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine was Professor Adam Wrzosek, a brilliant scholar and organizer of academic institutions. In the time between the two world wars, the level of instruction in medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry at Poznan University was very high. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 Poznan University was closed and remained so for the duration of the war. However, its professors did not cease teaching. In 1940 the an underground University of Western Poland was formed in Warsaw. It comprised the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. In 1941, the Polish School of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh was founded. Its first Dean was Professor Antoni Jurasz of Poznan University, an eminent surgeon. In the final months of the war, during the last battles for the city of Poznan, preparations were being made for the reopening of the University, and teaching was resumed in April 1945. In 1950, the Medical Faculty with the division of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy were detached to form an independent school - the University of Medical Sciences in Poznan. In 1975, a new Faculty of Nursing and in 1979, the Division of Laboratory Medicine were founded. In 1984, The Polish Parliament (Sejm) conferred upon the University its name KAROL MARCINKOWSKI UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES in Poznan in memory of Doctor Marcinkowski (1800-1846), a distinguished Polish physician and patriot of the first half of the 19th century who became a symbol of the highest professional and moral values in medicine. In 1992, the Faculty of Medicine was divided, with Faculty I being responsible for the 6-year Polish M.D. Program and Faculty II comprising the Divisions of Dentistry, Post Graduate Medical Education and Medicine and Dentistry with English as the teaching language. The Poznań University of Life Sciences takes a leading position in the rankings of universities of life sciences and biological sciences in Poland. At present we have over 12 000 students and 1500 employees. Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań is the major academic institution in Poznań and one of the top Polish universities. Its reputation is founded on tradition, the outstanding achievements of the faculty, and the attractive curriculum offered to students. In addition to its facilities in Poznań, it has campuses in Gniezno, Kalisz, Piła and Słubice/Franfurt-Oder.
