- Freie Universität Berlin was founded in 1948 by professors and students, in response to the persecution faced by students who took a critical eye of the system at Universität Unter den Linden, at that time located in the Soviet sector of the divided city. The idea of founding a free university found widespread support in the international community, including financial support. This outpouring of aid helped pave the way for Freie Universität to become a university with an outstanding international reputation. The principles of freedom and internationality have guided the university's development ever since. Since the university's founding in December of 1948, the academic ethos of Freie Universität Berlin has always been defined by three values: truth, justice, and freedom. The years 1968, 1990, and 2007 mark turning points in the history of Freie Universität. The university was one of Germany's important sites for the student protests of the 1960s, which sparked a trend toward greater openness, equality, and democracy. Then, after German reunification in 1990, Freie Universität Berlin shifted its emphasis, increasing its research activities. The number of graduates, successful doctoral candidates, and publications also grew by a significant measure. The basis for the university's successful new approach was a series of fundamental reforms, including the introduction of modern management structures in the university's administration, reorganization of the departments, and use of funding to support specific aims. In 2007, Freie Universität Berlin was selected in the Excellence Initiative jointly sponsored by the German federal government and the federal states' governments. It was one of nine universities in Germany to receive distinction in all three funding lines, a step that has enabled the university to solidify and further expand its position as an "international network university." In 2012 during the second funding round of the Excellence Initiative, it was selected again and is now one of eleven universities of excellence in Germany. Freie Universität Berlin is a leading research institution. One of the German universities successful in all three funding lines in the federal and state Excellence Initiative, thereby receiving additional funding for its institutional future development strategy. Freie Universität can thus take its place as an international network university in the global competition among universities. Development and assessment of research projects occur within various focus areas, research networks, and platforms for interdisciplinary collaborative research. The Excellence Initiative's performance provided funding for several new graduate schools and transdisciplinary research clusters. In particular, the graduate schools play a vital role in developing internationally competitive research centers of excellence. Freie Universität Berlin is a broad-based university with 15 departments and central institutes offering over 150-degree programs across a wide range of subjects. Freie Universität Berlin was founded on December 4, 1948, by students, scholars, and scientists to support the American allied forces and politicians in Berlin. The move was sparked by the persecution faced by students who took a critical eye on the system at the former Universität Unter den Linden, located in the Soviet sector of the divided city. Students and academics wanted to be free to pursue their learning, teaching, and research activities at Freie Universität without being subject to political influence. Generous donations from the United States enabled Freie Universität to build some of its central facilities, including the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital and the Henry Ford Building. In a nod to the university's founding history, the seal of Freie Universität still features the words truth, justice, and freedom. In 2007, the university dedicated a memorial to the founding students killed by the Soviet secret service. The university also presents its Freedom Award to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to freedom. To remain relevant and to compete academically and intellectually from its isolated position in West Berlin, Freie Universität made connections with academic institutions and leading literary figures in Germany, elsewhere in Europe, and worldwide. What started of necessity soon became a success strategy: Freie Universität currently maintains roughly 105 partnerships at the university-wide level and about 330 university partnerships within the Erasmus academic exchange network. 45 institute partnerships. Freie Universität is located in the southwest of Berlin, in Dahlem's garden district, which had already become a top-ranked location for research and study in the early 20th century. Academic activity in Dahlem was supported by Friedrich Althoff, Ministerial Director at the Prussian Ministry of Culture, who proposed the founding of "a German Oxford" at that time. The first new buildings housed government academic and scientific agencies and new institutes of the former University of Berlin. Also, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society – the precursor of the Max Planck Society – maintained various institutes in Dahlem from the time it was founded in 1911. A dynamic group of scientists, including Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, and Max Planck, performed pioneering research at the new site, earning multiple Nobel Prizes. In 1938, in what is now the Hahn-Meitner Building, nuclear fission occurred. Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner had spent more than two decades working together there toward that aim. Since it was first founded, Freie Universität Berlin has used former buildings of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society and brought several architecturally innovative buildings of its own to the area. Freie Universität is made up of groups of buildings all located within walking distance of one another. The campus planners designed it along the American college campus lines, a novelty in postwar Germany. The permanent exhibition "Future from the Very Beginning" (Zukunft von Anfang an) in the Henry Ford Building of Freie Universität highlights the university's rich and varied history, from its founding in 1948 right up to the present day. Photographs, early films, radio reports, and contemporary printed materials show the university's position at the center of contemporary events right from the start. The Henry Ford Building exhibition is open to the public at no charge during regular building opening hours (Garystraße 35, 14195 Berlin, 7:30 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday through Friday).

- The Lebanese University was established in 1951 to serve the diverse social groups that make up Lebanese society and provide a high-level institution where students can acquire university degrees. It was launched amid a growth in the number of students in grades 10 to 12. The first departments were The High House of Teachers and The Statistics Center. On 3 December 1951, the first class of 68 students entered the University, under the efforts of many professors and educated personalities and the support of the Lebanese President Bechara El Khoury. On 26 February 1953, official decree No. 25 founded a financial and administrative center at the University, called The Institution of Finance and Administration. The High House of Teachers was renamed The High Teachers Institution. The next significant change was 1959's regulating decree No. 2883, which, along with many others between 1960 and 1972, added more material into the University's structure and legalized all of its activities, requiring students to participate, administrators, the different faculties. The Faculty of Public Health aims to educate specialists in health, social and environmental fields, and cooperate and coordinate with public and private institutions, alongside civil organizations in the health, social, and preventive domains. It is also keen on providing theoretical and applied education while ensuring that moral standards and professional ethics are well-adopted. The Faculty of Pharmacy seeks to provide qualified professionals with pharmacies, pharmaceutical industries, and hospitals. It also endeavors to meet the increasing needs for competent pharmaceutical professionals by keeping up with the advancement of pharmaceutical sciences worldwide. The Faculty of Pedagogy is the foundation of the Lebanese University, and was known as the High Teachers Institution when it was established in 1951, before being renamed the Faculty of Pedagogy in 1967. Its current number of students stands at 2327. The Faculty includes two branches other than the Deanery. Its mission is to educate elementary and high school teachers, in addition to other pedagogic frameworks. It teaches students according to the latest scientific and international basics, qualifying them to work in tourism, travel, tourist guidance, and hotel management, whether in Lebanon or other Arab countries. Faculty of Medical Science at the Lebanese University was established in 1983; distinguished students from different social classes in Lebanon had the opportunity to turn their dreams into reality and study medicine. The branches of the Faculty of Medical Sciences were merged in 1996, forming a unit tasked with graduating the best physicians, who would be recognized at the local and global levels, and known for their top-notch scientific competencies, complete training, and professional ethics. The Faculty of Medical Sciences is aware that such a high medical practice level cannot be achieved without focusing on medical research, workshops, and conferences. The Faculty now comprises 1,263 students. The Institute of Fine Arts was established in 1965 and has evolved into four branches and two departments, the Urbanism Department and the Restoration Department. It currently has around 2,930 students. The goals of the Institute of Fine Arts are closely linked to all civilized human phenomena. - The monastery in Lebanon has always been a school. For centuries, Lebanon has owed to the Church in general and monasteries, particularly its cultural and educational development, its didactic art, and its spiritual, literary, and artistic heritage. The Church was the central protagonist in the Nahda, the renaissance in Arab thought. The role of ecclesiastical institutions was decisive in reviving the Arab language and literature after a prolonged state of torpor known as Inhabitat or decadence. The 1736 Synod of Mount Lebanon commanded not only free education but also free clothing and food. Since its foundation towards the end of the seventeenth century, The Maronite Antonine Order has always regarded teaching and educating the youth as a mission and a sphere of its parochial activity. A school was almost always geographically linked to each of the monasteries. Antonine University would like to locate itself amid this famous ecclesiastical tradition. Being an heir to such a glorious past, it aims to maintain a secular, salutary, and civilizing mission. In the past, education had a global character. There was no differentiation among disciplines. The boundaries between school and university were not clear, and the same applied to the differentiation among faculties and courses. The same instructor used the same book for almost all courses to teach all the students in the same institution. This is how the monasteries of Baabda, Mar-Chaya, Ghazir, Deir-el-Kalaa, and Kattine taught their students grammar and languages and philosophy, theology, music, law, and jurisprudence. Higher learning in the East gradually became classified into independent disciplines. The same applies to the allocation of different courses to different faculties. The specialty was increasingly imperative at the level of the institute, the instructor, and the student. The Lebanese state also gradually improved higher learning legislation. Throughout this differentiation process, The Antonine Order committed itself never to confine its educational mission to one field. To that end, the order has continued for decades to prepare its staff members in the most reputed universities in Europe and elsewhere to assume their academic and administrative responsibilities at its university. Meanwhile, the Antonine Order has witnessed several developments at the level of organized higher learning. Throughout those stages, we have been preoccupied with meeting the growing needs of the middle and the lower classes and contributing to Lebanese society's development. In 1979 and following the agreements signed with Belgian universities, Lebanese students started their studies at the Antonine Institute. They completed them in Belgium, where they graduated with Belgian diplomas. The majors ranged from applied sciences to medicine and dentistry. Engineering students did two years in Baabda, followed by three in Belgium; medical students did the first three years in Baabda. They then went to Belgium for another four years, and dentistry students had to spend four years in Baabda before going to Belgium to do their fifth year and obtain the Belgian state diploma in surgery-dentistry. From the beginning, the Antonine students have demonstrated remarkable achievements at The University of Liege, The Free University of Brussels, The Catholic University of Louvain, where they graduated with official diplomas. At present, those graduates have successful careers in addition to having a legal status in their country. Furthermore, it is worth noting that the Antonine Order had a pastoral concern; due to the war, many young Lebanese people, especially Christians, left the country searching for university studies abroad. The results and the validity of that education were uncertain and questionable. Host countries were not adequate milieu for them, and many were lost irremediably. This constituted a real hemorrhage at the human and financial levels, and the young had to face many economic, cultural, linguistic, ethical, and human problems. Many people opted for East European countries. They came back with debatable academic standards and professional competence, especially with an ideology that is hardly commendable for our society.

Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management has been distinguished for its applied orientations, where learning and training are primarily geared towards practical and professional purposes. Indeed, its majors reflect the real civilized face of any society, whether for present or future generations. The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration was established in 1967 as the Faculty of Commerce and was renamed in 1970. The number of students enrolled in this Faculty stands at 7,640 today, divided across six branches, in addition to the Deanery. This Faculty aims at developing highly skilled and specialized professionals in a field that has become the very backbone of modern life, as economies are now intertwined due to globalization. It is keen on establishing partnerships with enterprises from the public and private sectors, either for cooperation and staff training or for student internships. The Doctoral School of Literature, Humanities, and Social Sciences was established in 2007. It is one of the three doctoral schools created at the Lebanese University to provide the proper environment to foster and develop academic research. The number of students currently enrolled is around 951. The Doctoral School trains researchers and prepares them to manage academic research projects and supervise theses. Also, it organizes academic workshops and Ph.D. Students' Days and academic seminars and conferences to provide the necessary conditions to further the doctoral students' knowledge in academic research requirements. For these ends, it has created 14 research teams covering all the specializations of the Doctoral School. The Doctoral School has become a point of interest that attracts students throughout the Arab world. It is keen on expanding its regional and international horizons by signing agreements with other universities and international and regional institutes dedicated to supporting academic research and setting up the proper processes to carry them out. View full university
