  2. Mt Hobson Middle School is a small 'boutique style' school with a total roll of just 48 students, with no more than 12 students per class. Led by outstanding teachers, our students excel through individualized education plans and our unique Integrated Project-Based Curriculum which develops knowledge, time management, and research skills essential for success in the senior secondary school years and beyond. We are conveniently located at 131 Remuera Road in Newmarket, with easy access to Auckland's best arts and sports facilities which we utilize extensively to further enhance our learning environment. The school is based on a middle school age group and uses the Villa Education Trust Integrated Project-Based Curriculum. Although privately run, the school reflects the 8 Essential Learning Areas as stated in the NZ curriculum - overlaid by clear Christian philosophy and values. Parents have an integral part in school life and are kept informed of their child’s progress. Each child has their own Individual Base Plan (I.B.P.) and staff know their educational needs and ensure they are met. The child’s interest areas are affirmed and they have the opportunity to significantly develop the capacity to direct their learning. Parents are invited to take an interest in all aspects of their child's schooling. They are welcome to take part in both the morning and the afternoon programs. Please discuss any special areas of interest with the staff. We aim to develop the individual talents of every student and to teach them to relate the experience to and learn through the everyday world. Through expert teaching and guidance, students develop the ability to complete assessments effectively and to the best of their ability. Good behavior, social skills, and manners are taught and expected at all times. We take full advantage of the excellent learning resources in the community. Before explaining what an integrated curriculum is, it is important to note that we teach core morning classes in Mathematics, Science, English, Social Studies, and Technology. Our integrated curriculum applies those subjects and the projects students complete in a related manner. We treat knowledge as being seamless and interrelated. An integrated curriculum is a means of breaking down the artificial barriers between subjects as they have been traditionally taught. It is also an effective way of broadening the possible topics that may be learned/investigated. Within the school’s written curriculum, the staff ensures that all of the Ministry of Education's Essential Learning Areas (ELA’s) are covered at the appropriate levels. A project-based curriculum treats the investigation of a topic as the basis for learning. The students complete eight projects each year. Within each topic, the staff identifies the areas of the national curriculum that need to be overtly taught within the ELA’s. Each year, the topics will encompass the full ELA requirements for that level. Within each set project, all of the Learning Areas are included and the students have the opportunity to direct their learning and work to a depth and breadth that is difficult to achieve within a traditional structure. Their learning skills (e.g. goal setting, planning, investigative research, presentation, computing, etc) are enhanced, as are their thinking skills (e.g. metacognition, evaluation, synthesizing information, etc). Their basic academic skills (reading, writing, mathematics) are in no way ignored but are enhanced and used as a building block for in-depth work. An I.B.P. is an Individual Base Plan. Traditionally, only students with “Special Needs” have received these. In recent years, the government has required schools to show that they cater for Gifted and Talented students also and IBPs have shifted to that end of the continuum. At MHMS, we think every child needs an IBP as they all have strengths worth enhancing and weaknesses to overcome. In addition to working through the school’s curriculum, each child will have their base document program, which identifies interests, strengths, areas needing development, goals, and progress measurements. The creation and development of the plan will be a negotiated process between staff, the child, and the parents/caregivers. View full school
  3. This is a Board directive, which we must adhere to. MECS began as a dream in the mid-1950s! Christian parents dreamed of education with a Christian perspective for their children – and grandchildren. In the 1960s, they organized themselves and were very active in raising funds. In 1964, the pioneers formed their Association of Parents for Christian Education, Mount Evelyn, and accelerated the pace of work to establish a Christian school. With daring and vision in 1970, they purchased our wonderful six-hectare school property. Their dreams were realized when they opened Mount Evelyn, Christian Primary School on the 3rd of February 1973 – a full 19 years after the very first fundraising effort. The school opened with three teachers teaching 80 children in Years Foundation to 6 in three composite groups. We have two main motives for operating as a Christian school. The first is that we believe that Jesus Christ is to be Lord over every single part of life, including the education of our children. The second is that God has given parents, the responsibility of nurturing their children. Their education is a major part of that. MECS sees its primary task as unfolding God’s world with children in the educational domain (families and church also do this but in other domains of life). This involves students understanding that they are God’s creative handiwork, unique, precious, and loved, made in God’s image, and gifted in many ways. They also learn how to work and play within the world, and what God asks of them. As students understand themselves, their world, and have a healthy view of the calling God has for them, they are well equipped and positioned to engage as active participants in society and as disciples of the Lord. Such a holistic understanding stands in stark contrast to the broad Australian view that schools exist to provide students with basic skills and the where-with-all to get a good job at the end of the process. One is a view of God’s kingdom and the call to serve, the other, the material world in which one needs to work. Two very different views about education. View full school

  12. The school has changed significantly over the last few years with the addition of some excellent new facilities. We are now a three-form entry school and will grow to our maximum size in 2020. Sheen Mount School aims for excellence. We promote this through an enriched curriculum and by supporting all children to fulfill their potential. Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child. At Sheen Mount, we take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously. The Headteacher, Ian Hutchings, is the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead. At Sheen Mount School, we have experience providing for the most frequently occurring special educational needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, social communication difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders, learning difficulties, and behavior difficulties. There are other kinds of special educational needs, which do not occur as frequently and with which the school is less familiar, but we can access training and advice so that these kinds of needs can be met. The school currently meets the needs of 17 pupils with Education, Health and Care plans or a statement of SEN where extra ‘top up’ funding comes from the local authority. These include the following kinds of needs: autistic spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, social communication difficulties, sensory processing issues, and global delay. Also, there are genetic disorders with related educational needs including Downs Syndrome and Prader Willi Syndrome. Sheen Mount supports a further 18 children under SEN Support with the following needs: speech and language delays, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit disorder, global delay, specific learning difficulties, and social and emotional health difficulties. The school is the proud owner of a beautiful library, which the children use regularly to consult, read and borrow books. Thanks to the support of the Parent Staff Association the school is now able to provide an online version of its library catalog. The new system, called Junior Librarian, allows pupils, staff, and parents to view our school library catalog online and pupils are encouraged to use this to help with research, to write reviews about books they have read, and to search for new books and other library resources. Governors do not manage a school on a day-to-day basis but carry out an essential role in overseeing the development of the school. Governors may lend support in a variety of ways but all their responsibilities lead back to the core task of steering the school in its development. Three central pillars are supporting this endeavor. Being a critical friend underpins school governorship. We can be defined as a trusted person who asks provocative questions, provides information to be examined from another perspective, and offers critiques of a person’s work in a friendly way. A critical friend takes the time to fully understand the context of the work presented and the outcomes that the person or group is working toward. The friend is an advocate for the success of that work. Governing bodies are established by law as corporate bodies, responsibility for actions and decisions lies with the whole governing body and not with individual members. The Sheen Mount School Governing Body is divided into three committees, Resources, Standards, and Pastoral. Committees meet twice a term. The Full Governing Body also meets twice a term. The term of office for a governor is four years, which allows Governors sufficient time to see plans through from initial discussion to implementation. Of course, some Governors remain for much longer and this has often been the case at Sheen Mount. A substantial time commitment is involved but nearly all preparatory reading can be done at home. Meetings are held at the school in the evenings. Governors are encouraged to, and regularly do visit the school during the day. Sheen Mount School is set in spacious grounds with mature trees and open spaces creating a welcoming environment. Our well-equipped classrooms all have Interactive Whiteboard technology. We also have a well-resourced music room and ICT Suite. The whole school community works hard to provide the very best for all children – new ideas are always being explored to make the school an even better place to play, grow and learn. Children are extremely well supported during their time at Sheen Mount. All staff work to ensure that children thrive in a caring setting and learn to make healthy choices and gain important life skills. Our experienced support staff enhances the class teaching and plays a large part in pastoral care, particularly at playtimes. The support for children at playtime is further enhanced by our ‘Buddy’ system when older children assist younger children with games and activities. There are strong links with a varied range of external support agencies. Children have many opportunities to contribute their opinions about school life both informally within their class and formally through School Council. Our Learning Support Team has dedicated bases within the school. These well-resourced facilities are used to help children whose learning is developing at a different pace and who may require long or short-term individual or group support. Sheen Mount is a fully inclusive school with disabled access including a lift to the first floor. We can offer extended care for children through our on-site Breakfast Club and off-site after-school provision. View full school

  14. Heath Mount Primary School is a two-form entry school, located near the center of Birmingham. Our school has four hundred and twenty pupils from a range of ethnic backgrounds. We are very fortunate to have a large number of staff at our school, totaling over 65. We are very proud of the internal furnishings of the school’s building. We work hard to create a bright, exciting, learning-focused environment where children prosper and enjoy their learning. We have worked very hard over years to create a vibrant outside learning environment for the children. We have created different areas for the children to choose from, including climbing frames, outdoor table-tennis tables, tire park, slide, quiet zones, football pitch, basketball court, and more. We are very fortunate to have study areas in each phase of the school to enable groups of children to be withdrawn from their classrooms to receive intensive, focused teaching. We are placing an ever-increasing focus on the use of ICT across the curriculum and having completed the building of a new, themed computer suite we are now using sets of laptops and pads around the school. We believe that Heath Mount School must be one that can: Be a well-organized and systematic school with high levels of trust and accountability at all levels. Be an inclusive school – focus on all pupils’ needs through a dynamic, creative, and fun curriculum. Have high expectations leading to high levels of achievement where success is recognized and celebrated. Extend pupils’ learning through a strong partnership with the local and global community. Be a caring and supportive environment for everyone, placing high emphasis on the professional development of all staff and the health and well-being of everyone. At the end of the last term, the Governing Board was disbanded and an Interim Executive Board (IEB) was put in place because of the school being in the category Requires Improvement by Ofsted. An IEB is a smaller board of people who are directly appointed by the Birmingham Education Authority. Our IEB comes with a wide range of professional experiences and they have hit the ground running. They are operating at a strategic level and they offer both support and challenge with driving the school forward. At Heath Mount, we have spent a long time researching different methods to report children’s attainment and progress, and we have had a look at various commercial software tracking systems. Following our research, we have decided to use the Inform Tracker alongside the Step UP tool. View full school
