In 1992 as a group of concerned parents, driven by an urgent concern for the futures of our children, we started a school where children could grow in knowledge and stature within a wholesome and Godly environment. We started with 16 students and we've since grown to just over 150 students, ranging from Grade R to Grade 12. We operate as a ministry wing of Spirit life Ministries and serve parents and children of all denominations. Selborne College was founded in 1872 by Pastor Heinrich Muller, a German settler, and at that stage was known as the Panmure Public School. In 1880 the first recorded sporting engagement involving the school took place, namely a cricket match against Dale College in King William’s Town. After an exceptionally strong performance at the elimination round, “Rondo was selected to perform again at the regional finals and was named the winner in the Eastern Cape region. More than 200 schools entered the ATKV Tienertoneel competition this year, with more than 300 plays nationwide – all in Afrikaans – which is a third and even fourth language to some of our Thespians. The plays are adjudicated at a national standard by acclaimed adjudicators, such as Ira Blanckenberg, Albert Maritz, and the Head of Drama at Pretoria University, Prof. Marie-Heleen Coetzee. To achieve a gold award, a percentage of 85% or higher needs to be achieved. National exams were written for all subjects in grade 12 as well as Mathematics and Physical Sciences in grades 11 & 10. Provincial exams were written for the remaining grade 11 subjects as well as for selected subjects in grades 10 and 9. Although some papers were challenging, boys have risen to the challenge and achieved pleasing results. There is a 99,9% pass rate in the school. Grade 10 and 11 have produced record numbers of Bachelor passes with 91% of grade 10 and 87% of grade 11 achieving at this level. The top of every grade is particularly impressive. In 1956 there was a growing demand for quality Catholic education within the West Rand. St Catherine’s Convent, whose patron saint is St Catherine of Sienna, was founded in 1957 by the Order of the Dominican Sisters, who have a tradition of over 700 years of commitment to education. Homework begins at 14h00 for the juniors. Homework is supervised and the children are encouraged to work on their homework individually at their own pace and are assisted wherever necessary by a qualified teacher. Whilst we endeavor to complete homework activities each day, projects and assignments need extra attention and are to be completed at home. Parents are required to sign homework books every day. When homework has been completed, the girls are encouraged to participate in other activities and games such as tennis, swimming on Fridays, DVDs (these may be watched only if the girls wish), and other activities. Extra reading and homework-related problem solving are done on a Friday afternoon. The girls are encouraged to be independent and interact with each other respectably and lovingly. After Care ends at 17h00. In the event of a parent not being able to collect their child by the said time, arrangements may be made by contacting the Aftercare Supervisor before 17:00. St Catherine’s Convent offers a free service for the high school learners by which girls who cannot be collected directly after school attend High School Study. It is a safe and nurturing environment where the girls are encouraged to complete homework or consult with a teacher on specific days for extra assistance. Whilst we endeavor to complete homework activities each day, projects and assignments need extra attention and are to be completed at home. Girls are discouraged from waiting outside the gate to be fetched and there is always someone on duty until 17h00 on the school grounds. Educators regularly attend both regional and national subject conferences to ensure that their knowledge is up to date and to enable every educator to deliver quality education. St Catherine’s Convent also participates in the IEB Cluster groups, which are regular meetings where groups of educators from different schools come together to standardize their assessment levels and to share resources. The Consumer Studies Lab has new stoves and practicals are exciting for the Consumer Studies girls as it is a chance to be the first ones to use the new stoves new lighting system installed at Riebeek includes the replacement of all the on-stage lighting with led lighting and all the power supplies to the lights. Also, the installation of new DMX cables, dimmer packs, and 2 multibank lighting consoles in the lighting box to control everything. Rock the Hage donated some of the equipment with proceeds from the Rock the Hage show held at the school earlier this year. John V karaoke supplied the balance of equipment, with Craig Schady installing the cabling. The new lighting rig will certainly provide a suitable challenge to girls involved in technical aspects of staged events at school. We will certainly be able to enhance the visual aspects of all our stage productions at school tenfold. St Benedict’s is a Catholic school for boys that provides a holistic, gospel, and values-based education centered on the example of Jesus Christ and based on the four pillars of academics, religion, sport, and the arts. Our boys use their talents to serve the world its people and the kingdom of God. Through the regular application of our core values, we continue to provide value to our boys and parents, and we will consistently meet our goals. In January 1957, the Oblates bought a 26-acre site in Bedfordview, which through later additions would eventually grow to nearly 40-acres today. In February, an application for the registration of a new school was sent to the East Rand School Board and on 11th July, the feast day of St Benedict of Nursia, official approval was received, hence the name “St. Benedict’s”. Fr Hugh Dalton, a CBC Kimberley old boy, was appointed Headmaster. On December 8, 1957, at the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Boyle (Bishop of Johannesburg) laid the foundation stone of the first building - the building we now call the “Erasme Block”. The initial goal of the Oblates was to grow the school to 400 boys with 2 classes per standard. Today, nearly one thousand four hundred boys study and play on a piece of land in Bedfordview that more than sixty years ago, consisted of smallholdings, the largest of which was used for training and kenneling greyhounds. At that time Bedfordview was semi-agricultural and sparsely populated. It was Fr Philip Erasme, Oblate of Mary Immaculate and Parish Priest of Maryvale who responded to Bishop David O’Leary’s request that a Catholic Boys’ School is established on the near East Rand. He saw Bedfordview as ideal as it would also cater for the boys from St Paul's School, a Parochial Primary School he had established in Maryvale. Our Junior Preparatory experience lays the foundation for developing the fundamental skills that are crucial for academic achievement.
