  1. The modern learning environment at Redwood College embraces blended learning where the benefits of eLearning are combined with traditional face-to-face teaching as well as self-paced learning schedules. This forward-thinking approach facilitates academic rigor whilst ensuring that each learner has the opportunity to master content and achieve mastery. The result is motivated young learners who are inspired to learn more. The curriculum at Redwood is CAPS-aligned and Redwood matriculants can prepare for the IEB (NSC) exit qualification, the Cambridge examinations, or the General Education Diploma. In addition, Redwood offers a supplementary curriculum that is designed to enhance knowledge and future readiness. Courses such as Aquatic Science, Environmental Systems, Principles of Business Marketing and Finance, Astronomy, and Principles of Health Science are available. There is a Chef School onsite, where learners will be able to begin studying for a future in hospitality. Subjects such as Robotics and Computer Coding are in the pipeline and will be available shortly. Redwood Schools are positioned to positively impact education through the delivery of innovative education solutions whilst remaining grounded in a solid Christian ethos and culture. The objective is to develop a footprint of branded schools that deliver academic excellence that is relevant in a fast-developing world. The Redwood name is taken from the mighty Redwood Forests that stand tall and weather the test of time. However, the brand borrows more from the Redwood Forests than just a name. The living mechanism and ecosystem of the Redwood Forests provide living insights and principles that are adopted into the Redwood brand. The unique root system whereby the surprisingly shallow roots of individual trees extend radially and intertwine with each other creates a sophisticated anchor that facilitates the entire forest’s growth, even in harsh environmental conditions. The bark of a Redwood Tree is thick, fibrous, and spongy. It retains moisture which protects the tree from external threats such as fire and insect infestation. A Redwood forest is a vibrant ecosystem providing home, shelter, and protection to a plethora of plant and animal life. The forests are a key component of a greater system whereby they serve to clean the atmosphere through the capture of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen. 3. The 1950s were a boom time for South Africa. The Second World War had ended in victory and many returning servicemen were setting up homes in new suburbs. Roosevelt Park was one of those suburbs, built to house the young soldiers and their families. The suburb was named in memory of the victorious American president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had served three terms in office and died shortly before the allied peace. The first school to be built in the area was a primary school (still known as Franklin D Roosevelt, FDR for short, today). Many of the new residents at the time were young family men who needed to send their children to school close to their homes. Shortly afterward the Education Department realized they needed to build a new High School in the area as the existing schools were overcrowded with the growing population. They set aside 22 acres in Roosevelt Park Ext. and the children were sent to school on the primary school premises to start their secondary schooling until the new school could be built. The school officials applied to the Roosevelt family for permission to use part of the Roosevelt family crest and motto. We aim to produce global, humane citizens who can reach their maximum potential on all levels, coupled with a life-long passion for leaming and sound self-worth enabling them to succeed in a fast-paced and ever-changing world. Roosevelt High School was proud to be one of the first schools in Johannesburg to open its doors to all South African learners after 1990 as soon as the law allowed. Mr. Robinson, who was principal at the time, had been eagerly awaiting that day and there was already a waiting list. In 2002 Roosevelt High School celebrated its 50th anniversary. The school still has its proud traditions and a vibrant group of learners as well as a dedicated staff, some of whom have been at Roosevelt for many years. The staff is caring and this is what makes Roosevelt High a true family community. View full school

  5. St Andrew’s is an independent girls' school in South Africa dedicated to the development of girls into grounded, accomplished, and confident young women who leave the school well and truly ‘Skilled for Life’ and ready to lead. Situated in Senderwood, Bedfordview, we offer a challenging yet imaginative education that extends well beyond the classroom. There are 4 schools on our beautiful campus including our Preschool (coeducational from 3 months to 5 years) Junior School Senior School and Saturday School, uBambsiwano. St Andrew’s School for Girls and its education are benchmarked globally and locally and as such, we believe that we can compete with the best in the world based on our quality of education, staffing, facilities, value-added offerings, independent networks, and good governance. Our girls write matric examinations set by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), giving them a school-leaving qualification that is truly world-class. Through its assessments, the IEB aims to develop young people who are life-long learners, critical users of information, have good problem-solving skills, and are creative and reflective thinkers. The IEB philosophy has an impact on how children are taught in lower grades as they must be able to apply knowledge and not just repeat it. School-leavers who have gained an IEB matric are known to fare well at university, locally, and abroad. It is worth emphasizing that South African school-leaving examinations are benchmarked against the education systems in most foreign countries where young people wish to further their studies. Our Preschool provides a warm, caring, and happy environment in which girls and boys between the ages of 3 months and 5 years can learn and play. Our classrooms and expansive play areas are the ideal settings for a skills-based learning program that enables children to explore, develop and discover within the framework of structured yet flexible daily routines. Every staff member is a qualified professional with a passion for early childhood development. They also recognize the importance of adjusting their approach to meet each child’s specific needs. Our little ones are exposed to St Andrew’s values of accountability, balance, community, grace, integrity, and trust and are encouraged to recognize and display these in their daily interactions with others. Our Junior School provides an engaging space in which girls can develop both their known talents and discover some hidden ones during various stages of their development. Apart from our focus on the academic aspects of the curriculum, girls have an abundance of co-curricular activities from which to choose, helping them feel fulfilled, happy and successful in their education. Whole-girl development is important to us and we believe we provide the space and the opportunity for our girls to enjoy a happy, productive, and successful day at school. Our guiding values of balance, integrity, grace, community, accountability, and trust are core to each child’s journey with us as they build sound foundations that will enable them to thrive and reach their full potential. Our academic program is both outcomes and skills-based and nurtures problem-solving, critical, and creative-thinking skills. We believe in whole-girl development and know that core skills such as music, art, drama, and physical education are as important as academic skills and knowledge. As a school that wholeheartedly embraces technological advancement, girls are not only encouraged to become computer literate but to actively use the technology at their disposal to access, analyze and summarise information. Through our participation in the global Eco-Schools program, the curriculum incorporates environmental education with hands-on projects like a butterfly and bird garden, tree trail, and recycling initiatives being undertaken every year. Girls learn both isiZulu and Afrikaans until they complete Grade 5, before selecting one of these as a Senior School subject. St Andrew’s has a fully-equipped therapy center run by the school psychologists and a team of highly qualified therapists who form part of the staff body. They work alongside teachers and parents to enable each child to reach her full potential. Our academic program is both challenging and varied and lives up to our motto ‘Skilled for Life’. Girls write the Independent Examinations Board’s National Senior Certificate, which affords them excellent opportunities to study at the tertiary level, locally and abroad. Technology has become an indisputable part of modern-day life and we’ve embraced it in the classroom. Tablets used by Grade 8 and 9 girls provide a blended approach to teaching while at the same time maintaining the standards of academic excellence our school has come to be known for technology and multimedia – combined with small class sizes – provide the optimal environment for full engagement. Extra lessons and academic support are available to girls who require one-on-one support to help them along in their academic journey! View full school

  7. We are a non-denominational Christian School for boys from three to eighteen years old. As you learn more about the five schools that make up our College, we hope you will be inspired by our commitment to independent education for boys. You are welcome to visit us. The Pre-Primary School is a special place designed for boys from three years old to begin their learning adventure. This is the age at which learning should not be rushed as it is essential for boys’ well-being that they play out their imaginations every day. And on hot days, the Pre-Primary School boys have their own 1m deep pool where they can confidently learn to swim. Drama and music fuel unlimited imaginations and creativity, and solid Christian foundations keep character and values in priority. This is an extraordinary place where the boys love their teachers and their school, and parents often struggle to get them to go home at the end of the day. We believe children learn best in context and through active discovery. We provide the opportunity for your son to do this by providing a safe, caring, family-orientated environment that enables him and his peers to grow into self-confident, accomplished young men. The Junior Primary School has highly motivated and qualified teachers who, through their experience and knowledge, understand the unique learning requirements of young boys. Independent education is more than a good idea. From the start boys are taught to respectfully ask questions, to make choices, and to evaluate consequences. Skills like perseverance and intuition are encouraged and developed through tactile learning. This is no learning factory – rather, by equipping the boys to read and establishing solid numeracy through the Singapore mathematics approach, we expect our boys to be the problem solvers and articulate negotiators of the future. The Junior Primary years are colorful, active years of learning by doing. Singing in Chapel, painting in art, playing the violin in music, moving from play to sport, going on excursions, or jumping into the 1m deep pool when it’s hot – the boys live life to the full. Every learning experience fuels the imagination of the boys as they learn to operate in a more formal environment. Learning and development support is offered through private specialists offering remedial lessons, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. If required, boys attend these lessons on campus during the school day. Sport is a wonderful part of belonging to this College and it is important to keep an educational perspective as boys are prepared to enjoy being part of teams and learning to trust and rely on teammates to achieve collective goals. We begin with a multi-skill program of sports activities, fundamental movement skills, and games for children. A progressive pathway into team games allows boys to master skills and to understand space. While a lot of emotion goes into the sport, we know what parents would like is for their son to grow in confidence and skill level so that he can contribute to the team effort. What they need is unconditional support and encouragement. It is remarkable to watch how much the boys progress at this age. A multisport program means that every boy plays every sport and educationally, research indicates this is the best for boys. Boys who complete their Primary School years at St Charles College receive an extraordinary preparation for their Senior School years. They receive a solid grounding in Christian values, and their confidence is developed by our careful attention to the core academic areas. The St Charles College Primary Schools boys participate fully in the sport and extramural activities of the College and they learn commitment and build capacity for life in the process. During the Senior Primary School years, parents are encouraged to continue to work closely with the College to build resilience and independence which are the key focus areas of the next phase of their development in Middle School. Boys can accomplish extraordinary things if expectations are realistic and within a positive learning climate. The Middle School caters to boys in the early years of adolescence with their lively needs: intellectual, spiritual, physical, and cultural. These aspects are under the direction of the Head of Middle School and three Heads of Grade. In this phase, boys are encouraged to develop learning patterns and explore their abilities in every aspect of College Life. Our boys need to learn to work in teams and as individuals. With a directed academic program leading to the IGCSE examinations in Grade 10, the Middle School boys are required to become increasingly focused on integrating their knowledge and to accept responsibility for their progress. We recognize that not all learning happens inside the Classroom and excellent sports and extramural programs are designed for the positive physical development of the boys in Middle School. Boys in this phase of their education are directing their minds seriously towards tertiary studies and integrating leadership roles with busy schedules, including sporting, academic and extra-curricular responsibilities. The cognitive demands of the curriculum coincide with the emergence of reasoning capabilities, and there is a healthy expectation to apply critical thinking skills. The aim of the final two years at the College is to direct a growing independent ethic as our boys prepare to take their places successfully in a global village. The focus of the Upper School is responsibility - to the College, parents, and ultimately to building a stronger South African society and economy. Grade 11 and 12 boys are expected to act as role models and mentors to those in junior grades and to set a positive example at all times. View full school

  9. St Marks opened its doors to 180 learners on 26 January 1999. Since then we have grown to full capacity and have built separate facilities for the High School and Primary School. The visionaries, Bruce and Sandy Woolard saw the need for a private Christian education at an affordable cost to the community. Their passion for ministry inspired a call to reach children and their parents/guardians practically. Not only was the vision quality education, but mere importantly offering spiritual and emotional support throughout their school career. A happy child is a successful child. Computer classes form part of the curriculum and are offered during or after school hours. There are between 32 and 36 forty-five-minute sessions per year. The course caters to all levels and fees are included. The program includes a Year-end assessment, moderation, and certification for those who pass the assessment with 70% or more. This is a nationally moderated course and prepares learners thoroughly for the world of computers. These are included in the School Fees but all workbooks, dictionaries, and rule books are at the parent's expense as they will be retained by the learner at the end of each year. Tests are set throughout the year with formal examinations being written only twice a year during the second and fourth terms. The teachers will prepare reports at the end of each term. No formal examinations are written by the Foundation Phase learners (Grade R-3) as their work is evaluated daily. Reports are issued at the end of each term. Promotion requirements are based on the National Curriculum Guidelines. Learners will be assessed on a CASS (Continuous Assessment) mark and their examination mark in both June and November for learning subjects. If a learner is absent for an exam, a valid doctor's certificate must be produced for the learner to be granted permission to write the examination/s on their return to school. Test marks and continuous assessment will be included in their report in March and September. There is so much more to school sport than just the benefit of physical activity. Sport builds character and self-esteem in a child. It teaches patience and perseverance. Sport inculcates discipline and teaches the value of winning and losing with dignity. The awareness of others and learning to work in a team is an invaluable life skill. At St Mark's, these are the lessons we aim to instill whilst teaching our learners the benefits of a well-rounded, healthy, and balanced approach to life. We have competitive team sports and can challenge other schools and hold our own. We are always looking for opportunities to grow our sporting program but have to take into account that a larger spectrum of choices will weaken our teams due to our smaller numbers. If your child excels at a certain sporting discipline, the school will fully support them in joining a team at the club level. Learners participating in outside sports are recognized within the school. We however encourage learners to participate in our school teams with pride. View full school

  11. Curriculum: IEB St Patrick’s CBC is the only IEB registered school in Kimberley. The primary school initiative, or PSI, was designed and launched in 2015 to complement the IEB’s product offering to independent schools. The Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre focuses on the holistic development of our youngest pupils, offering a wide range of activities and educational opportunities. We prepare pupils with diverse backgrounds and aptitudes for a life of learning, leadership, service, and personal achievement true to our history and the charitable intentions of our founder Blessed Edmund Rice. St Patrick’s is a prestigious school with a multicultural and socially diverse pupil population. Christian Brothers’ College (“CBC”), the very first Christian Brothers’ College in Africa, was established by the Christian Brothers originating from Ireland in 1897. Over the years, they established schools, not only in Africa but across the world. Christian Brothers’ College, Kimberley, opened its doors on the first day of school to a mere 15 pupils, to be joined the next day by a further 22. At that stage, it was still called the Christian Brothers High School. The range of subjects was wide and tuition was offered in six languages – Greek, Latin, English, Dutch, French, and German. The school built up an outstanding academic reputation from the outset, attracting boys from both Kimberley and the outlying districts. This created a need for boarding and in 1905 the school opened its boarding facilities. For many years thereafter, the school was primarily a boarding school for boys, with a special focus on Catholics. The school adopted its saint name, St Patrick, at the centenary celebrations in 1997. This change signified a new beginning in the second 100 years of the life of the school. Values like honesty, humility, and courage were a vital part of the education from the outset, in a school that was to face the Siege of Kimberley and two World Wars in its first 50 years. Currently operating from age 2 to Grade 12, St Patrick’s CBC is co-educational and welcomes girls and boys from all races and creeds. St Patrick’s CBC is the only school in Kimberley offering the highly credited Independent Examinations Board (IEB) curriculum. Our small classes and quality staff allow for a very personal approach to learning. We believe that education is more than just studies and sport, and have created an environment where every child participates in an array of activities, with a special emphasis on their strengths. St Patrick’s CBC is a prestigious school with a multicultural and socially diverse pupil population. The school offers various opportunities for pupils to achieve excellence in academic, sporting, leadership, and social endeavors, in an inclusive environment that supports learning, teaching, and friendships. The school is characterized by a pursuit of all-around high achievement, a focus on preparation for tertiary studies, diversity in pupil programs, and high-quality outcomes. St Patrick’s places great emphasis on the fact that our community is a family of learning. We are all a part of a unique group that is constantly learning and being challenged to push the boundaries that little bit further. St Patrick’s CBC is the only school in Kimberley offering the highly credited Independent Examinations Board (IEB) curriculum. Pupil discipline is an important part of providing a conducive learning environment for all. St Patrick’s CBC has a school discipline policy that is reviewed regularly. It is developed collaboratively with pupils, staff, parents/caregivers, relevant organizations, and our school’s Board of Governors. Our discipline policies set out a balanced approach between recognizing pupil achievement and dealing with unseemly behavior. They are based on developing pupil responsibilities, encouraging respect, and creating good conditions for effective teaching and learning. St Patrick’s CBC offers you a wealth of opportunities to get involved in sport and physical activities. We have numerous provincial representatives in several sports. Our goal is to enable pupils to develop their potential through exposure to an all-inclusive range of academic, sporting, creative and cultural activities by nurturing a secure and positive school climate. As parents, we all want our children to grow up in a wholesome environment that promotes and instills strong moral values, encourages personal responsibility, and develops confident characters with true compassion for the needs of others. St Patrick’s CBC is the answer. Ethos describes the atmosphere or environment in which an activity takes place. A Catholic school is called to generate and maintain an ethos based on living out the values of Jesus, which leads the community and the individual members to grow. It is this ethos that gives the Catholic school its distinctive religious character. A Catholic school is a school community, recognized by the local Bishop, which through its general program of education, and especially its Religious Education classes and religious practices, exercises the right to live and learn the values displayed by Jesus Christ, as upheld by the Catholic Church. 12. 15. St John’s Diocesan School for Girls is an independent, medium-sized Anglican school situated in Pietermaritzburg. From Grade RR to Grade 12, we offer a liberal education on the foundation of a strong Christian ethos, providing a caring and value-based educational environment. St John’s D.S.G. is fondly and aptly described by our girls as a “Small School with Big Heart” and exudes a sense of intimacy and warmth. The Junior School offers one class per grade and benefits from great facilities and exceptional teaching. It is a place where our girls are nurtured and equipped with the correct tools to become happy, confident, kind, and strong young women who will go on to achieve in their higher education and beyond. The Grade RR and R girls (affectionately known as “Eaglets”) enjoy an active and balanced curriculum all within a caring and nurturing environment. They participate in a psychomotor program that links, through play, the emotional and social development of the child with their sensory-motor development. Both Grade RR and R center their learning through play, with, Grade R adding short periods of teacher-directed language and numeracy, in preparation for Grade 1. Our Eaglets thoroughly enjoy their Art and Music activities, and their participation in the annual nativity play is a highlight of the Junior School calendar. Our girls look forward to their Free Playtime where their imaginations come to life in the fantasy corner, their brains kick into gear in the cognitive zone, their creative skills come alive in the Art Room, their senses are stimulated in the outdoor sensopathic area and their gross motor skills are developed on the playground. Our school aims to stay abreast of educational trends that are of benefit to the cognitive and developmental stages of our girls by embracing 21st-century learning. Our girls are familiar with De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats, as well as Thinking Maps, which are used during lessons to assist in developing the seven C’s of 21st-century learning, namely: critical thinking (finding solutions to problems) creativity, and innovation (thinking outside the box) collaboration (working with others) character (social-emotional learning skills) culture and ethical citizenship (sharing what we value) computer and digital technologies (transforming how we learn and lead) and communication (making sense and expanding perspectives). Principles such as adopting a growth mindset, the Learning Pit, and P4C (Philosophy for Children) are used in the classroom and are applied practically. A growth mindset is vital as it teaches our girls that learning is a process and that it is alright to make mistakes. Our girls are also provided with valuable study skills which will equip them well for their secondary and even tertiary studies. Our girls are exposed to inquiry-based learning, which is a method that emphasizes the student’s role in the learning process. Rather than the teacher telling our girls what they need to know, they are encouraged to explore the material, ask questions, and share ideas. Inquiry-based learning uses different approaches to learning, including small-group discussion and guided learning. Instead of memorizing facts and material, students learn by doing. This allows them to build knowledge through exploration, experience, and discussion. Each year becomes slightly more structured to prepare the children for Grade 1 while maintaining a fun element. We are a happy, nurturing, family-orientated pre-school where we encourage parents to be part of our family. We have an open-door policy and we communicate regularly with our parents ensuring that their minds are at ease. Our program allows children to develop their creativity, enhance their communication skills and acquire social interaction abilities through play. It is at this developmental stage that children learn about themselves. The perceptual skills that form the foundation for further learning are developed in our carefully structured program, which includes baking, climbing, running, construction, creating, singing, dancing, and communicating. Literacy and Numeracy Skills are developed with a Mathematics curriculum from Singapore, the Letterland, and THRASS (phonics programs) as the basis of the curriculum. The pupils visit the library and music rooms weekly, developing their interests in both reading and the art of music. Our colorful classrooms are alive with the chatter of happy, busy children. We believe that we develop children who are physically, emotionally, spiritually, and cognitively ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. A visit to the Pre-Preparatory facility will allow prospective parents to see the qualitative difference between child-care and childminding, and provide a clear understanding of the importance of formal education in this age group. The Junior Primary phase aspires to cater to the needs of all children by encouraging them to develop confidence and become well-balanced individuals. At this stage, learning styles are developed so that the pupils are allowed the opportunity to explore their full potential. A growth mindset approach is encouraged with an emphasis on the learning process. Teaching the various Thinking Maps allows the pupils to explore and expand their knowledge. Singapore Maths and the THRASS language program form the basis of our curriculum. Each child is further extended by weekly visits to the music room, computer center, library, and physical education class. Educational outings are arranged to support classroom themes and topics covered. An integrated sports program exposes our Grade ones to the different sporting codes. Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress through regular meetings and reports. The school is well supported by therapists who offer occupational therapy, speech therapy, and play therapy. Class teachers also offer pupil support lessons to those children who require additional assistance. We in the senior primary Grades 4 to 7 phase of St Martin’s believe in allowing every pupil to discover, grow and achieve their maximum potential in a safe, stimulating, and holistic environment. All pupils learn in different ways and our caring, enthusiastic staff provide the necessary skills for each student to develop into critical, independent thinkers. Our nurturing school environment encourages the academic and spiritual needs of each student and fosters learning and personal growth through the curriculum. We as a Christian school also encourage tolerance, understanding, and respect of other faiths. Our classes are small, and our dedicated teachers are committed to educational excellence. They attend regular seminars and make every effort to acknowledge, recognize and develop the talents, strengths, and potential of every pupil. We encourage our pupils to adhere to our motto “Non-Recuso Laborem” and to strive for their best in all they do. St Martin's uses its facilities to ensure that the compulsory co-curricular program offers a suitable variety of sporting and cultural activities to the students in the summer and winter seasons. 25. Everything at the Aliwal North High School revolves around the child with Jesus Christ as the center of all that affects the child. With this as a premise, we will strive for the development of every child’s full academic potential combined with the maximal development of the child’s sporting and cultural talents so that he may become a well-balanced human being. In this process, the school wishes to utilize and involve the community and parental home as partners to establish in an orderly and responsible manner a financially secure environment in which we may achieve our goal. We at the Aliwal North High School strive for an environment in which every pupil will develop fully according to his potential. You are someone’s perfect match. That is the slogan that the newly appointed ‘Peer Promoters’ of Aliwal North High School go by. Of course, they aren’t talking about relationships, but instead, they’re taking blood. Specifically, your blood and how it can save someone’s life. Our country’s population is on the rise and so too is the demand for a safe blood supply. On Wednesday the 23rd of January, six students from the school were trained on how to assist the South African National Blood Services in meeting those high demands. They play an integral part in the amount of blood donated every year around the country, as these ‘Peer Promoters’ help educate their peers on the importance of safe blood donation. They also recruit new donors and encourage people to become regular donors. They are essential in creating a future where being a regular healthy blood donor is the norm. Aliwal North High School is also a proud host of multiple SANBS blood drives that occur during the year. The promoters are tasked with arranging the blood drive and ensuring that the function runs smoothly for everyone involved. These are all responsibilities that these students shoulder proudly. Taking the time to donate blood for four minutes could potentially gift three people with the opportunity of living longer lives. So with that said, the Aliwal North High School Peer Promoters are challenging you to become a blood donor and to become a promotor to your peers because as we like to say, it’s not just about blood, it’s about life.
