The Polytechnic Institute of Braganca (IPB) is a Portuguese University of Applied Sciences with 7000 students and 500 teachers and researchers. It has an internationalization program with widely recognized success, including the annual mobility of more than 900 incoming and outgoing students and 300 teaching staff members. Nowadays the IPB is a multicultural institution where 26% of its students are international students from all over the World. IPB is also recognized for its performance in applied research and regional engagement. The Polytechnic Institute of Braganca (IPB) is a Portuguese Higher Education Public Institution with 7000 undergraduate and master students, embracing a wide area of knowledge and technology, including agriculture sciences, arts and sports, education and teachers’ training, informatics and engineering, administration and management, health, communication, and tourism. The IPB belongs to the European Network for Universities of Applied Sciences (UASnet), which main objectives include the transferability of professional skills and the integration of applied research in their professional and technological education mission. The IPB was awarded the Diploma Supplement Label by the European Commission for the period 2013-2016. This label recognizes the quality of the diploma supplement, the transparency of procedures, and its importance in the facilitation of mobility and employability of the recent graduates, as well as the academic and professional recognition of the qualifications. The IPB has already been awarded the ECTS Label for the period 2011-2014. Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro quickly became one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. University Fernando Pessoa was recognized as a public interest organization by the Portuguese State in July 1996 and it is the result of a pioneering higher education project initiated in the 1980s with the creation of two higher education institutes that provided its structural basis. The University of Minho is currently one of the most prestigious Portuguese higher education institutions and is gradually becoming more prominent internationally. The University was founded in 1973, and it is currently comprised of three camps: the Gualtar Campus, in Braga, and the Azurém and Couros Campi, in Guimarães. The University's governance is carried out by the following bodies: the General Council, the Rector, and the Management Council. These bodies are incumbent of directing the University in its scientific, educational, and cultural activities and its interaction with society, as well as of ensuring the proper planning and financial and administrative management of the institution. The University of Minho has a strong policy for internationalization, which is reflected in its main lines of action - education, research and innovation, and interaction with society. Regarding education, through its interaction with more than 80 countries and 400 universities around the world, UMinho is very active in the recruitment of international students, in mobility programs, in the establishment of degrees in association, and in distance learning, vectors that allow for the internationalization of its educational offer. The University of Minho offers a wide range of courses corresponding to first, second and third cycles of studies leading to undergraduate (BA/BSc), graduate (MA/MSc), or doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees. Bachelors degrees (first cycle) have 180 or 240 ECTS, the equivalent of 3 or 4 years. Integrated master's programs (courses that combine a bachelor's with a master's) have 300 or 360 ECTS, the equivalent of 5 or 6 years. In addition to these cycles of studies, the University of Minho also provides a large number of courses that do not provide an academic degree, namely specialized training courses at the masters and Ph.D. levels. Established in 1988, Universidade Aberta (UAb) is the single public distance education university in Portugal. Due to its purpose, UAb uses comprehensively, in its teaching activities, the most advanced technologies and methods of Distance Learning, without geographical borders or physical barriers, and giving special emphasis to the expansion of the Portuguese language and culture within the Lusophony space (migrant communities and Portuguese speaking countries). In this context, UAb offers higher education anywhere in the world (Undergraduate, Master, and Doctorate degrees) and Lifelong Learning study programs. Since 2008 that all programs are taught in learning mode, the year that UAb became a European institution of reference in the area of advanced e-learning and online learning through the recognition of its exclusive Virtual Pedagogical Model. The information security of the learning platform of Universidade Aberta has been certified by the Portuguese Association of Certification (APCER) with the ISO/IEC 27001 in 2017. In 2008 Universidade Aberta became a reference European institution in the area of advanced e-learning and online learning through the recognition of its Virtual Pedagogical Model, unprecedented in Portugal and developed by this institution around four cornerstones: student-centered learning, flexibility, interaction, and digital inclusion. Since then all degrees and lifelong learning courses are available online and make use of those methodologies and tools. “The advances in technology have been driving distance education to find new teaching and learning methodologies, rethinking the technological mediation characteristic of distance education programs in terms of new forms of interaction, particularly the interaction among students. The new means of communication through the web allows us to set up new virtual learning contexts, where both directional (teacher-student) and multidirectional (student-teacher and student-student) communication is possible (one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many communication). We can, therefore, create virtual classes where students and teachers interact at any time from anywhere. This approach, going beyond instructional methods and tasks, requires the adoption of pedagogical strategies that engage students as active participants, leading them to develop metacognitive skills (learning to learn) and take a constructive attitude regarding their capacity of self-realization towards lifelong learning, becoming more and more autonomous and being able to interact responsibly in the group.” One of the strategic areas of Universidade Aberta (UAb) is the cooperation with other higher education institutions (HEI), the civil society, and the business world. Fostering the scientific, technical, and cultural exchanges with similar national and international institutions is a goal of utmost importance at UAb. Over the years, UAb has established hundreds of protocols and partnerships with national and foreign institutions with a special focus on research and development activities, especially in the area of distance education and elearning. Situated in the northeastern city of Vila Real, The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) became a fully-fledged Public University in 1986, although its history also includes a valuable heritage received from its predecessor, the Vila Real Polytechnic Institute, created in 1973. This Institute took on a relevant role in the development of the region, and in September 1979, it was converted into the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro Higher Education Institute. It was due to the intense activity in the fields of teaching and scientific and technological research that, less than ten years later, the Government granted its status as a qualified University. Today UTAD is widely recognized as a significant reference in the Portuguese university system. The University pursues scientific research activities, promoting the diffusion and social and economic valorization of knowledge and technological innovation. It also develops teaching and research policy that takes into account the specificities of the Madeira Region in which is located, collaborating in the formulation of national and regional policies on education, science, and culture, and giving its support on legislative projects concerning these subjects. UM is also an essential element for the deepening of the internationalization of the Region, seeking to contribute to a greater connection to the diaspora and the construction of the Portuguese Language space and the European space in teaching, science, and culture. By its very nature and dynamics, UMa maintains a relationship of commitment and interdependence with the economic, social, and cultural development of the Madeira Region. Before the existence of the University of Madeira, several educational establishments were already present in Madeira during the 20th century, such as the Instituto Universitario da Madeira, the Instituto Superior de Artes Plasticas da Madeira, and the Conservatorio de Musica da Madeira. In 1977 is founded the Instituto Superior de Artes Plásticas da Madeira, later integrated into the University of Madeira. Creation, in the Region, of Support Centers from other Universities, as well as the creation of the Escola Superior de Educacao da Madeira. There is also the offering in Funchal of some courses from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, the Portuguese Catholic University, and the University of Minho. On April 15, 2008, UMa is visited by the President of the Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva. The new Statutes of the University of Madeira are approved by the new Legal Regime of Higher Education Institutions. Its homologation takes place on October 9, 2008, by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Professor Doctor Mariano Gago. The Red Cross Nursing School Portuguese Oliveira of Azeméis is a Polytechnic Institution of Oliveira de Azeméis Municipality. It operates in Nursing and other areas of Health Sciences whose education will you be authorized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education or competent, according to plans and programs themselves and in compliance with the fundamental principles of the Red Cross. The main objective is to train students for the practice of the nursing profession, training throughout life, and promoting the development of the region in which it operates. They are also milestones in the training provided, the principles of the Red Cross, international humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention, and additional protocols. Given the demands on the institutions of higher education and the labor market, the school seeks to maintain a faculty with diverse academic and quality, covering different areas of knowledge and willing to give their best in the practice of teaching, to prepare their students for the practice of human care, technical and scientifically appropriate to the needs of individuals, both in terms of health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and social integration in the family, at school, at work, and in the community. The University of Algarve is a young state university, located in the southern part of Portugal, one of the most touristic regions of Portugal. The University has witnessed significant growth in terms of the student population, modern facilities, and the quality and diversity of programs on offer. Founded on the 16th January 1979, the University of Algarve results from the union of two preexisting institutions, the University of Algarve and the Polytechnic Institute of Faro, which makes it somewhat unique from most universities given that Faculties and Schools of both systems, co-exist. In 1982, the first rector of the University, Prof. Gomes Guerreiro (1982-1986) was appointed, following by Prof. Lloyd Braga (1986-1990), Prof. Montalvão Marques (1990-1993), Prof. Alte da Veiga (1993-1997), Prof. Adriano Pimpão (1998-2006), Prof. João Guerreiro (2006-2013) and Prof. António Branco, the current rector since 2013. Following the approval of the Universities Autonomy Law, the Assembly of the University of Algarve, comprising the representatives of academic and administrative staff and students of all the Faculties and Schools, approved the Statutes in 1991, which received subsequent approval by the Ministry of Education. In 2001, the first University Statute amendment was published in the Portuguese government’s official gazette. The University student population is today close to 10,000 and employs over 700 academics. It has three faculties and four schools, offering a range of quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses in beautiful academic settings. Recently, there has been a significant increase of foreign students from more than 60 countries due to the internationalization strategy of the University of Algarve. The quality and diversity of European Masters and Doctorates, combined with post-graduate courses open to students from all over the world justify the magnitude of this mobility.
