  3. Our hopes are high, and by them we are bound together. We are creating an extraordinary and unique school. Whittle School & Studios is the first truly global and modern institution serving children from ages 3 to 18. We not only want to improve our students’ lives, but we also hope to contribute to the cause of education on every continent. We measure our success not through the narrowness of exclusivity but through the breadth of our impact. Pioneers in education who have come before us have taught us that a modern school knows that the way students learn will outlast what they learn. We understand that the social and emotional development of every child is different, and we work with students to help them blossom and grow at their own pace—we don’t force kids into lock-step and one-size-fits-all education. We believe that learning happens everywhere and all the time. That’s why we see an ingenious facility as an on-going lesson in design, that the digital age can be used to help students learn beyond the four walls of the classroom, and that school schedules and calendars need to be reconceptualized. Our graduates will stand out. Grounded by rigor and knowledge, they will be undaunted, creative and bold, ready to lead or help in the wholly transformed and challenging world of their future. Each will shine in at least one passionate, purposeful pursuit in which they will achieve excellence, and as a result, lifelong confidence. All students will speak other languages and study in other cultures, yet remain deeply connected to their homelands. Our faculty will be learners too, side by side with our students. We’ll choose those that want to guide children, and have demonstrated distinction in their academic discipline. They’ll choose us because our global scale brings them unequaled opportunities for professional development, and our rewards for them are more commensurate with the great good education brings to society. We thank those who have generously supported us, and we look forward to sharing our work with all who aspire to reimagine education. Our curriculum is a truly global one, combining the innovative work of leading educators with the best curricula from around the world. For Early Learning, our curriculum is inspired by the Italian Reggio Emilia model, grounded in student autonomy and discovery of the world. Our curriculum uses a thematic approach that ties to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. It also highlights the Chinese national curriculum and is aligned with principles from global best practices, including the National Research Council’s Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Singapore Math, Australian Mathematics Standards (ACARA), as well as competencies developed in partnership with the Center for Curriculum Redesign, Harvard. In Upper School, our model takes inspiration from the traditional American Independent School curriculum, including research and presentation components of the AP curriculum, is bolstered by some of the best traditions from the British tutorial system, and is also deeply informed by research in learning science and some of the best aspects of the Chinese approach to education. We offer our students a learning experience that is truly Integrated, Personalized and Global. View full school
  4. Washington Waldorf cultivates each student's capacity to think, feel compassionate, and act purposefully in the world. We are committed to the education movement inspired by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner's pioneering work and advanced by Waldorf teachers worldwide. At Washington Waldorf, we encourage the connections that broaden students' experiences and help them grow in new directions. Our teachers incorporate academic, artistic, and practical elements into every subject, creating memorable lessons, successful scholars, and healthy individuals. Washington Waldorf's values, listed below, are the basis of our actions. These core values guide our choices, define our courses, and establish our direction as an institute for learning. The healthy development of children and adolescents A balanced, dynamic curriculum Meaningful teacher-student relationships Exceptional teaching A diverse and inclusive community A respect for nature Moral discernment An active spiritual life At the Washington Waldorf School, we prepare young people for the future by developing their full capacities for creative imagination, critical thinking, and active engagement in the world. Waldorf education is truly an education for "head, heart, and hands." Our purpose is to develop the whole human being in a healthy and nurturing environment. WWS educates the whole child. Our curriculum is designed to develop our students academically, emotionally, and physically. In practice, this means that, in addition to a firm grounding in core academic skills, WWS students have many opportunities to engage in the arts, music, and drama and practical manual skills in textile arts, metalwork, woodwork, and more. Moreover, the arts are not merely extra classes. They are woven throughout the curriculum. Waldorf students also receive extensive training in movement and spend lots of time outside. The Waldorf curriculum is developmentally appropriate. Children have very different capacities at different ages, and our curriculum is tailored to meet students "where they are." We believe young children, up until grade 1, need to spend much of their time in free play. This builds their capacities for imagination and goal setting while also building social skills and small motor skills. Academics are introduced in the early grades and gradually become more intense into the middle school years. Simultaneously, the Lower School curriculum is rich in the arts, storytelling, and drama, which cultivates the students' ability to be empathetic and compassionate. By High School, the curriculum is designed to cultivate the students' capacities for rigorous critical thinking, supplemented by continued, more advanced work in arts, music, and expressive movement. We create a safe and nurturing community for students and their families while preparing our students for life beyond Waldorf. In a genuine sense, WWS is an oasis, especially in the Children's Garden and Lower School, where "children can be children." As students get older, we help them engage the larger world in a healthy way that allows them to develop their independence and good judgment. Our families face the same choices and challenges as other families, and ultimately our students will have to make their way in the larger world outside the Waldorf school. Our goal is to help our students know who they are so that they can go forward with confidence that they are equipped to thrive when that time comes. Although there is no typical Waldorf student, our students tend to be individualistic, creative, hard-working, and open to new experiences and learning ways. Many different kinds of students thrive at the Washington Waldorf School. All students discover new facets of themselves. In many cases, students who have become stressed or indifferent in other settings blossom at the Washington Waldorf School. Even though we are a relatively small school, students experience rich social life, and no one is anonymous. We delay the use of digital media in education. This is an area where there are many misconceptions about Waldorf. We believe that young children benefit from little or no screen time. Moreover, we are skeptical about the much-touted positive impacts of instructional technologies, especially for young children. However, we recognize this field is changing rapidly and that such technologies are becoming more effective. Otherwise, we want our students to maximize their real-world experience rather than the virtual world. Contemporary life is saturated in technology, and every child must be prepared to thrive in a highly technological world. Above all, this requires a high degree of flexibility, adaptability, and creativity — precisely the qualities the Waldorf curriculum fosters. Finally, it is worth noting that Waldorf graduates are very well represented in high technology fields and media, where their unique brand of creativity is highly valued. Our graduates are admitted to a wide range of colleges and universities and must gain admission to their top choice. Waldorf graduates stand out in the admissions process, and our approach means that teachers are equipped to provide highly individualized, persuasive recommendations. Many of our graduates also receive substantial merit-based financial assistance. Beyond college, our graduates excel in a wide variety of careers. Our graduates are highly creative, entrepreneurial, driven, socially-minded, and grounded in who they are. View full school
  5. Washington International School (WIS) is a coeducational independent school (private School) offering 900 students a challenging international curriculum and rich language program from Preschool through Grade 12. Students in Preschool through Grade 5 follow the inquiry-based International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) in a language immersion (Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten) and dual-language (Grades 1-5) framework in Grades 6-10, they continue with a multidisciplinary and inquiry-based approach designed to enhance understanding and develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the prestigious IB Diploma Program, the curriculum for all students in Grades 11 and 12. In addition to their academic studies in mathematics, science, language, literature, social sciences, and the arts, students learn how to be engaged, global citizens. An active sports schedule, community service in Washington, DC, and elsewhere, and travel programs for study and fun take our students out into the world. At the same time, they are involved in theater and music, art, journalism, debate, and many other activities on campus. WIS has a dual identity: it has characteristics typical of Washington, DC independent schools, and international schools around the world. The international qualities are evident in the curriculum and our community members' origins, who hail from nearly 100 countries. In terms of business management and the admissions cycle, WIS operates much more like our peer DC schools. And here is a statistic that may surprise: 38.5% of WIS graduates over the past ten years are "lifers"—meaning they attended WIS continually from at least Grades 1 through 12. This is not typical of international schools abroad, but it makes our community a fascinating mix of long-term residents and new arrivals. Our mission is to be an exemplary learning community—enriched by differences, informed through inquiry, and global reach. WIS students investigate the arts, humanities, sciences, and technology through a rigorous, visionary, research-based curriculum inspired by academic innovators worldwide. WIS students learn two or more languages, embrace diverse cultures and viewpoints, and have the ability and confidence to navigate a complex world. WIS students pursue community engagement and demonstrate empathy, honesty, and civility. Our challenging international program draws on classroom-based research on pedagogical practices and curriculum design from renowned organizations such as the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) and Project Zero, a research group based in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. The WIS educational approach reflects the globalized, interconnected society in which we live, giving students a world perspective in mathematics, the sciences, social sciences, languages, literature, technology, and the arts. The Washington International School upholds the best traditions of intellectual and academic endeavors with a classic liberal arts program, stressing well-rounded people. Students are encouraged to explore their interests during classes as well as through various extracurricular activities. Our students thrive in a lively mix of cultures, traditions, and ideas, and that mix is the backbone of the School's strength. Appreciation of all forms of diversity is the key. As individuals, WIS students are all-rounders—athletes who perform in the school musical, artists who excel as scientists, calculus students who read Cervantes in the original language. 10. Founded in 1749, Washington and Lee University is named for two men who played pivotal roles in the University's history: George Washington, whose generous endowment of $20,000 in 1796 helped the fledgling school (then known as Liberty Hall Academy) survive, and Robert E. Lee, who provided innovative educational leadership during his transformational tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 to 1870. Washington and Lee University provides a liberal arts education that develops students' capacity to think freely, critically, and humanely and conduct themselves with honor, integrity, and civility. Graduates will be prepared for life-long learning, personal achievement, responsible leadership, service to others, and engaged citizenship in a global and diverse society. Washington and Lee is a small, private, liberal arts university nestled between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Lexington, Va. It is the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the nation. In 1749, Scotch-Irish pioneers who had migrated deep into the Valley of Virginia founded a small classical school called Augusta Academy, some 20 miles north of Lexington. In 1776, the trustees, fired by patriotism, changed the school's name to Liberty Hall. Four years later, the school was moved to Lexington's vicinity, wherein 1782, it was chartered as Liberty Hall Academy by the Virginia legislature and empowered to grant degrees. A limestone building, erected in 1793 on the crest of a ridge overlooking Lexington, burned in 1803, though its ruins are preserved today as a symbol of the institution's honored past. In 1796, George Washington saved the struggling Liberty Hall Academy when he gave the school its first significant endowment--$20,000 worth of James River Canal stock. The trustees promptly changed the name of the school to Washington Academy as an expression of their gratitude. Washington and Lee University observed its 250th Anniversary with a year-long national celebration during the 1998-99 academic year.

UMW offers Faculty-Led Programs, led by UMW professors during breaks from the regular academic calendar or during summer sessions. Students may also participate in UMW's Approved Programs, which allow them to study abroad for a summer, semester, or year at an international institution. For the same tuition cost as a semester or year at UMW, students can also study abroad through one of our Exchange Programs. Founded in 1908 and named for our country's founding father's mother, we have built a rich history of traditions and accomplished academic excellence. We have evolved from our beginnings as Fredericksburg's State Normal and Industrial School for Women to one of the nation's premier, selective public liberal arts and sciences universities today. From 1944 to 1972, we functioned as the women's college of the University of Virginia. Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious academic organization, established a Mary Washington chapter in 1971. Shortly after we became coed in the early 1970s, we were reorganized as an independent college. Having added a limited number of graduate and professional programs beyond the central undergraduate curriculum and has established more than one campus, the General Assembly of Virginia in 2004 renamed us the University of Mary Washington. We continued to evolve with the creation of two new colleges in the summer of 2010 when the College of Business and the College of Education joined the College of Arts and Sciences in fulfilling our mission of providing rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs.

At both the graduate and undergraduate levels, Trinity Washington University is a private university located in Washington, DC that offers an array of degree programs for men and women. They are just a handful of the many Trinity graduates that credit the university with a liberal arts background that helped them become leaders in their various career fields. Trinity’s lushly-wooded campus in the nation’s capital bustles with life as 2,000 students pursue their degrees. Each Trinity student—man or woman, graduate or undergraduate—has the advantage of learning in small classes, allowing them to connect with their professors and classmates, and enrich their education. Since the class of 1904, Trinity has prepared its students to become leaders of character, passionate intellectuals excited about their future. Always welcoming to people of all faiths, Trinity was founded as a Catholic women’s college by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1897. These nuns believed that women should have the same opportunity to experience the empowerment of higher education when many schools only accepted men. While remaining true to its original mission, Trinity began taking men into its evening and weekend programs during the 1960s. Today’s students participate in many unique traditions that root their academic experience in a culture unique to Trinity. For instance, each graduating class is given a color, either red (like the class of 1904), green, blue, or yellow. Throughout the year, flags, banners, and even students adorned in one of these hues, demonstrate class pride and a sense of togetherness. As the global community moves into the 21st century, educating a new generation of leaders and citizens equipped with the intellectual perspective and ecumenical knowledge of liberal learning is as essential as any other time in history. The ability to think critically, to write and speak, to make ethical judgments, to know the context of history and literature, to understand the fundamental economic and political forces affecting the psychology of whole peoples, these are the quantities essential to effective leadership in our ever-changing global environment. These are the hallmarks of a Trinity education in the liberal arts. Liberal learning at Trinity is enriched and enlarged by the resources of the nation’s capital, from internships in Congressional offices or scientific laboratories to research at the Library of Congress to participate in classes at any of the significant area universities through the Consortium of Universities. Trinity’s commitment to liberal learning derives its ultimate meaning from the core identity of the Trinity as a Catholic college. Beyond spiritual growth realized through theological studies and liturgies, the Trinity community also lives its faith through active service to people in Washington and around the country. Trinity’s commitment to teaching and liberal learning is also realized in the Honor System that governs all aspects of academic and co-curricular life on campus.

  18. Since our capital city's first days, people have traveled here for many reasons. They come to explore the past and to chart new futures. They come to ask questions and to seek expert answers. They come to start discourse and to remember in silence. They come to demand change and to be that change. They come to grow. They come to learn. They come to make history and join the ranks alongside many prominent GW alumni. At the George Washington University (GW), #OnlyatGW is not just a hashtag—it is our way of life. Living and learning in the heart of D.C. provide our students opportunities and experiences unlike anywhere else. Inside the classroom, you will sit next to peers from all over the world and learn from faculty who are not only experts in their fields, but who also might be world-famous artists, policy-makers or dignitaries. At GW, learning does not stop when class is over. It's the reason you are here and will be a part of everything you will do. You can use our resources to forge your path forward. You might find a dream internship at a non-profit or the White House, volunteer to better our city, run into government leaders on campus, or even study on the steps of monuments that tourists flock to. You will not only live and learn at the center of our nation's capital, but you will be a central part of it no matter your path. Whether you want to build robots, study sea lions at the National Zoo, work with world-renowned artists, develop a digital strategy for a political campaign or study Shakespeare, you will be right at home in a GW classroom. Our study programs are as diverse as our Colonial community—from biomedical engineering to dance, political science to archaeology, you can find the program you have been searching for and use it to start doing what you always wanted to. No matter your interest or situation in life, GW has a program for you. You can find more than 100 undergraduate programs and more than 230 graduate programs at the certificate, masters, and doctoral levels in our ten schools and colleges. You could study in the center of D.C., Virginia, at our Virginia Science and Technology campus, or one of our graduate education centers in Arlington or Alexandria. If these options do not work for you, you can study from home through one of our more than 100 online programs. With more than 3,700 international students hailing from more than 130 countries, GW's community thrives on varied perspectives and experiences. In the classroom, students and faculty encourage each other to grow and expand their thinking beyond textbooks. Here you won't just read about current events and history—you'll enter discussions with classmates who have experienced them in their home country. We welcome you to share your culture and contribute new ideas about your passions, both the ones you know and those you can't wait to be exposed to at GW. Our students come to GW for many of these same reasons. They come for passionate faculty, for diverse student groups, for Division I athletics, for once in a lifetime internships, and for inspiring service opportunities. GW, like many universities, provides all of this. But our students come for something else, as well. They don't just want to do a community service project. They want to meet, and then exceed, a service challenge from the First Lady of the United States. They don't just want to view slides of art. They want to debate masterpieces in the galleries of world-class museums or dance on the Kennedy Center stages. And they do not just want to take an engineering course. They want to research a stunning new core lab facility with faculty who are quite literally shaping the world of tomorrow. Housed in a city, unlike any other, our students gain an education unlike any other. The whole city is our classroom, and our students emerge not just with a diploma, but with experiences that could only happen at GW. GW's location in the heart of Washington, D.C., provides for unparalleled access to leading international institutions, multinational corporations, global media outlets, and the governments of 177 countries via their resident embassies. This is a distinct advantage—no other university has as much potential for international engagement within the footsteps of its doors. At GW, we believe that a community united in purpose has the power to set great ideas in motion. Our leadership and the entire community is committed to taking on new challenges and identifying opportunities to make a lasting contribution locally and globally. Our connections to the world's most influential organizations and institutions, many of which are within walking distance from our Foggy Bottom Campus, mean your education is not limited to the classroom. Undergraduate students and graduate students have internships or other hands-on learning experience before they graduate. View full university

All legal powers, authority, and responsibility for the operation of Eastern Washington University rest on the board of trustees. University President Mary Cullinan is the university's principal administrative officer and has general supervision overall operations and programs of the institution. The president carries out the rules and regulations established by the board of trustees and state law. Financial aid is not available for stand-alone certificate programs. State, institutional, and private aid are still available. This restriction does not apply to students taking certificate programs as a part of a more extensive degree program or teacher certifications. Financial aid available for summer 2018 is based on your remaining annual eligibility from the 2017-2018 school year. In general, most summer financial aid is loans only, although you may qualify for a Pell Grant in the summer if you are Pell-eligible. Certain restrictions apply, and eligibility will need to be determined by the Financial Aid and Scholarship office. Students eligible for the College Bound Scholarship (CBS) may also obtain CBS during the summer term. However, any CBS funding used during the summer counts against the 12 quarter maximum on the program. In 1882, Benjamin P. Cheney Academy opened its doors to more than 200 enrolling students. A generous contribution of $10,000 from Benjamin P. Cheney, a wealthy transportation industrialist, had at last fulfilled the dreams of Cheney citizens who had long desired an institute for higher learning in their community. The academy became the State Normal School at Cheney in 1889, the same year Washington was given its statehood. The school was proudly designated as an institution "for the instruction of persons, both male and female, in the art of teaching the various branches that pertain to a good common school." By the time it became Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937, Eastern was already a fully accredited four-year, degree-granting institution, offering majors in numerous subjects. The campus proliferated in size and program offerings in the decades following World War II. In 1961, the name was again changed, this time to Eastern Washington State College. It was increasingly evident that the region needed professionals in many fields. In response, Eastern added a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Finally, in 1977, the state Legislature changed the school's name to Eastern Washington University. View full university

In 1853, prominent St. Louis merchant Wayman Crow and his pastor, William Greenleaf Eliot Jr., concerned about the lack of institutions of higher learning in the growing midwest, led the founding of Washington University in St. Louis. During the 1840s and 50s, waves of immigrants flooded into St. Louis, boosting the young city's population. These newcomers came to a pressing need for education — both industrial training and general introductory courses — conducted outside of regular working hours. So the first educational step of the young Washington University was to establish an evening program on October 22, 1854. Over the succeeding decades, the continuing education program underwent many changes. The university flourished at its location in downtown St. Louis for its first 50 years, growing from an evening program to an institution offering a full slate of scientific, liberal arts, and classical course offerings. In time, schools of law and fine arts were added. In 1891, the school acquired the St. Louis Medical College to form a medical department, which merged with the Missouri Medical College in 1899.
