      About Me

      1. Welcome to ESSSM (Santa Maria Health School), which is a private institution of a higher education level, owned by the Portuguese Province of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady, “heiress” of the history and educational legacy of ESESM (Santa Maria Nursing School), which, since 1952, has been a reference of quality in what concerns the teaching and the technical and personal development of nursing professionals, continuously sharing its mission and promoting the principles and values of its founding matrix. To rise to the current challenges, by aiming to achieve its full scope and pointing towards broadening its formation, ESESM has become, as of the ninth of June 2016, ESSSM, which continues teaching nursing at the same time as it opens up to new graduations, namely, Physiotherapy and Higher Professional Technical courses regarding related areas. Inspired by the Franciscan example and ideals, the formative and educational project of ESSSM, which guarantees the continuity of the legacy left by ESESM, wishes to give its future professionals a pluralistic formation, prominently oriented to the service of others, entrenched on principles that add value to the human person and provide privileged attention to the ones in need as well as the underprivileged and, at the same time, it’s technically advanced, aligned with cutting-edge procedures in healthcare, very engaged with the community, focused on the internationalization and on encouraging a positive transition into the world of work. ESSSM, the heiress of a relevant past, is now concentrated on the future and seeks to generate in the present tomorrow’s best professionals. In the last decades, there has been an increase in longevity in developed countries. Worldwide, numbers show a scenario where the proportion of working-age people will decline while the relative number of retired people continues to increase. This picture favors the rising of costs, ultimately compromising the sustainability of societies. To prevent systems from collapsing, this demographic change needs an integrated approach from different disciplines, taking in mind that active and healthy aging is crucial in the XXI century transforming society. By bringing an entrepreneur attitude, with innovative ideas of products and services in active aging, you will meet the current needs of society! It is time to act. Join us and you will Be a Visionary on Active Ageing. Our one-week summer course was developed for people from a mix of backgrounds and disciplines that are interested in the challenges associated with an aging population. The training focuses on contacting different successful active aging-related projects and on working groups to generate and develop creative and unique challenging solutions. Higher Educational of Vocational Courses. These courses are a new modality of study cycle, regulated by Decree-Law number 43/2014, with a four-semester (2 years) duration, corresponding to 120 credit units (ECTS), already available in Santa Maria Health School.

      4. Santa Maria College is a Years 5 – 12 Catholic school for girls, both day and residential, offering a quality education inspired by Jesus Christ and the vision of Catherine McAuley, with a commitment to living out the Mercy values of: Hospitality: To show hospitality is to respect the dignity of each person valuing them for who they are. We do this by welcoming the stranger and creating a friendly space where everyone is included. Compassion: To be compassionate is to feel for others. We do this by keeping our hearts open to the cause of all people and reaching out to them in a spirit of mercy. Justice: To be just is to be concerned about achieving fairness for all. We do this by promoting the dignity of all people and upholding their rights as human beings. Service: To give service is to want to make a positive difference or contribution to the lives of others. We do this by being open, sensitive, and responsive to the needs of all people. Excellence: To excel is to strive to do everything to the highest possible standard to which we are capable. We do this by using our gifts and talents to their fullest at all times. The College’s Mercy heritage and history go back to the arrival of seven Sisters of Mercy in Perth in 1846. They were led by Mother Ursula Frayne and proved themselves to be resourceful, resilient, and strong women. The Sisters opened their first school on St George’s Terrace in February 1846. As enrolments increased, school buildings, including a boarding school, were built on the grounds of the present Mercedes College. As the demand for boarding places increased from country families, the Mercy Superior at the time, Mother Brigid McDonald, and her Council resolved to build a new ladies’ college for boarding and day students in the bushland in Attadale. Santa Maria College opened its doors in 1938. The post-war period brought with it a rapid expansion in residential development around the College. As a result, there was a growth in student numbers and the student population at Santa Maria College changed from primary borders to a majority of day students. Today Santa Maria College is a vibrant community of over 1200 students from Years 5 to 12. We enjoy beautiful, modern facilities and lead in the areas of technology and innovative education. However, we retain the vision of those early Sisters of Mercy and strive to provide a nurturing environment for a holistic, values-laden, education. At Santa Maria College, all that we do is underpinned by a deep commitment to our Catholic faith. We believe that each individual, every lived experience, and a broad range of perspectives should be respected and cherished. This spirit of inclusion and our commitment to understanding drive the Santa Maria approach to educate and nurture the women of the future. The vision of Sister Catherine McAuley led to the founding of the College in 1938. Since then, the traditions of her order, the Sisters of Mercy, have enabled Santa Maria girls to thrive at school and beyond. Hospitality, Compassion, Justice, Service, and Excellence are our guiding principles at Santa Maria College. We believe that our values reflect not only the principles of our faith, but the values wider society holds dear. A practical partner to Religious Education, the Service Program teaches girls the value – to themselves and others – of making a positive difference in the lives of others. Throughout their school journey, students are required to serve their families, their school, and the broader community. Girls are asked to chronicle their service to create insights into the spiritual and psychological dimensions of making a positive difference in the lives of others. A range of volunteering activities and groups enable our girls to become, as a reflection of their faith, well-rounded, caring, and productive members of the community. Wherever an individual’s path might lead, the values instilled by engagement with this program never lose their relevance. A sense of self-respect and an instinct for empathy are crucial to the development of resilient, capable, generous, productive people. Woven into the student experience at Santa Maria is a well-resourced approach to pastoral care, the Mercy Wellbeing Program. The Mercy Wellbeing Program is integrated with our academic work, with our Service Program, and with our faith. We understand that people who value themselves understand the value of others. We support our girls throughout their school years to ensure they enter the wider world with self-confidence balanced by a sense of respect and concern for others.
      5. Established in 1894 by a Dominican Sisters group, Santa Sabina College nurtures intellectual curiosity, love of learning, and education for justice, inspired by gospel values. The Dominican motto of "Veritas" is part of our 800-year-old heritage, shared with Dominican schools around the world. As a P-12 College, we benefit from the continuity of learning approaches from the early years to Year 12. Inquiry learning in a student-centered learning environment characterizes each stage of the learning journey. Our early education center, Mary Bailey House, embeds inquiry learning principles through the Reggio Emilia program. The P-5 Primary Campus is an authorized world school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate. The inquiry is at the core of the PYP and happens to be closely aligned to traditional Dominican approaches to education. Our Middle (Years 6-8) and Senior (Years 9-12) campuses are similarly committed to the inquiry at increasingly sophisticated levels. The strategic intent is to grow a community of discerning scholars who are intellectually curious, creative, and reflective. The pastoral care of our students is integral to our approaches to teaching and learning. The structures and processes we employ at different stages of a student's education share common principles: respectful relations, the dignity of the individual, compassionate understanding. We encourage our students to make good choices and support them when they do not. Our aim is always to work with students and families in a spirit of community. The emotional, social, and spiritual growth of our students is critical to their present and future lives. It cannot be an afterthought to academic achievement. Learning beyond "The Boulevarde" is enabled through a wide variety of educational experiences. Students participate in retreats, outdoor education, curricular and co-curricular programs at our Tallong campus in the Southern Highlands. In the senior years, students are encouraged to participate in immersion experiences to Central Australia, the Solomon Islands, and South Africa to deepen their understanding of global interconnectedness. These experiences are part of the fabric of life at Santa Sabina. The significant sporting and co-curricular life of the College ensures that education is holistic and inclusive of a wide variety of student interests and abilities. Our Music education from P-12 is designed to maximize students' opportunities for authentic performances in a range of contexts. When your child enrolls at Santa Sabina College, your family becomes part of the community. We welcome parent involvement in the life of the College and witness its benefits every day. Our ex-student community is active, involved, and committed to both the legacy and the College's future. Our Dominican Sisters have a continuing presence on our campuses and offer pastoral support to families and students.

      8. The Maria Montessori Institute (MMI) is a registered charity that promotes the authentic educational approach first developed by Maria Montessori. This is achieved by providing: AMI teaching training for age levels 0-3 years, 3-6 years, and 6-12 years A school located at several sites serving children from 2 to 12 years Short courses and workshops aimed at parents and anyone interested in supporting the lives of children Promotion and support of outreach projects underpinned by Montessori principles We are affiliated with the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). The MMI is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children, staff, and visitors. We adhere to our safeguarding policy which is regularly reviewed. Montessori schools promote hands-on, self-paced, collaborative, joyful learning. Children in Montessori follow their interests, wherever that passion leads giving them strong academics, leadership, self-discipline, responsibility, independence, initiative, and a lifelong love of learning. Children are innately interested in learning about the world around them and through their natural curiosity can develop themselves. By providing an environment that supports natural development, Montessori education enables children to develop the fundamental capacities that they need to become happy and fulfilled adults who contribute to society. Authentic Montessori environments encompass the following principles: Mixed-age groups not only offer a wide range of activities to spark children’s interest but also enable children to learn from others and learn by helping others. Freedom for children to work at their own pace, without interruption, choosing from a range of activities that are developmentally challenging and appropriate. Exploration is encouraged so that children find things out for themselves, make mistakes and correct them independently. Respect for each child as an individual personality with unique talents. Respect for others, the community, and the environment. An AMI Montessori teacher has a deep understanding of child development and has been thoroughly trained to guide children towards productive and challenging experiences, both individually and collectively, that will provide a firm foundation for their future. We are one of around 50 Montessori Training centers in the world, and the only one in the UK, which delivers the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Diploma, an internationally recognized qualification based on the authentic approach to Montessori education. The courses delivered by the Maria Montessori Institute have evolved directly from those first delivered by Dr. Montessori and her son Mario between 1919 and 1951. We are proud of the academic excellence of our courses, which are delivered by highly qualified trainers who have all undertaken the AMI Trainer of trainers program after substantial experience working with children. The Maria Montessori Institute runs exemplar Montessori schools in London where children aged 2 to 11 experience the Montessori approach delivered by AMI-trained teachers. On-going professional development and mentorship ensure that teachers are actively engaged in reflective practice to maintain the highest level of authenticity.
      9. Our school began serving the local Catholic community in 1830 under the direction of Marie Madeleine D'Houet, founder of the religious order, the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ). The sisters are still involved in our school today, serving on our Governing Body and contributing to the spiritual life of the school. Our vision is that FCJ schools are communities of personal academic excellence. Strong in companionship, the unique giftedness of every person in these faith communities is recognized, nourished, and celebrated. Our hope and expectation are that, through God's grace, working in us all, each young person grows into their best self, with a zest for life and the generosity and confidence to use their talents and gifts in the service of others. Our school is underpinned by our mission - growing together through Christ with courage, confidence, and dignity. Our school began serving the local community in 1830 under the direction of Marie Madeleine D’Houet, founder of the religious order, the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ). The sisters are still involved in our school today, serving on our Governing body and contributing to the spiritual life of the school. Maria Fidelis is a Roman Catholic school for families who would like their child’s faith to be nurtured and supported. The majority of our students are from Catholic families but we welcome applications from parents who value Christian education and feel able to support the Catholic ethos of the school. We have a formal uniform and behavior policy as we believe that children and young people flourish best in the security of clear boundaries. We expect that the majority of students will follow a traditional, academic curriculum. The ablest are identified early in Year 7 and are allowed to study Latin. They are also mentored by graduates from Russell Group universities, who monitor their progress and coach them for higher education. Maria Fidelis regularly exceeds national and Camden averages in progress and attainment indicators. We are committed to providing enrichment experiences for all students and make regular use of the excellent local opportunities available to us, as well as offering national and international visits. These include: Mentoring from City businesses such as Deloitte Opportunities to work with academics from leading scientific institutions and university departments Links with schools in France, Belgium, Germany, and Italy Clubs ranging from debating to street dance Trips to Oxford and Cambridge from Year 9.

O’Brien Jr. Student Support Center encompasses peer and professional tutoring services, accessibility services, a distraction-free testing space, and the hub for the College’s three opportunity programs: HEOP, HOPE, and the Renaissance Scholars Program. Students are encouraged to visit the Center from the moment they step foot onto campus and to utilize the services throughout their academic journey. Students may meet with one of Maria’s certified counselors for assistance with personal and/or academic concerns. Counseling offers the individual the opportunity to gain personal insight and develop new ways of coping with life’s difficulties. Referrals to outside mental health agencies may be made when appropriate or at the student’s request. All information is kept strictly confidential and does not become part of the student’s college record. Available to students and staff, the College’s pastoral services provide individuals, of all beliefs, with spiritual guidance and support. In addition to regular counseling sessions, the Pastoral Care team facilitates the College’s inclusive spiritual programming. Maria College is rooted in a focus of caring and service to others through education. Learn more about Our Mercy Connection and Celebrations of that heritage. 13. Ave Maria University is a Catholic, liberal arts institution of higher learning devoted to Mary the Mother of God, inspired by St. John Paul II and St. Teresa of Calcutta, and dedicated to the formation of joyful, intentional followers of Jesus Christ through Word and Sacrament, scholarship and service. Ave Maria University is proud of its Catholic identity. The Most Rev. Frank J. Dewane, Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida, established Ave Maria University as a Catholic University according to the Code of Canon Law guidelines. The recognition of Ave Maria University as a Catholic University is granted upon the University's commitment to continue to be guided by the Catholic Church's teachings and faithfulness to the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae. Ave Maria University is a vibrant university located in beautiful Southwest, Florida. It is an academic institution that pledges faithfulness to the teachings of the Catholic Church and is committed to offering one of the finest classical liberal arts curricula available and opportunities for specialized study in all of the sciences and humanities. Ave Maria is known for its exceptional academics, faithfulness to the Catholic Church's Magisterium, dedicated faculty and caring staff, and a unique educational philosophy that strives to develop the whole person. For more on this, see the Mission Statement of Ave Maria University and a brief account of Our History. The University's superb faculty, challenging curriculum, professional staff, and a student community where it is easy to form lasting friendships provide graduates with training that empowers them to step out into the working world as future leaders and wealth-creators, with a solid understanding of contemporary challenges, and strong confidence in their academic training and foundation. Founded in fidelity to Christ and His Church in response to the call of Vatican II for greater lay witness in contemporary society, Ave Maria University exists to further teaching, research, and learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the abiding tradition of Catholic thought in both national and international settings. The University takes as its mission the sponsorship of a liberal arts education curriculum dedicated, as articulated in the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae, to the advancement of human culture, the promotion of dialogue between faith and reason, the formation of men and women in the intellectual and moral virtues of the Catholic faith, and to the development of professional and pre-professional programs in response to local and societal needs. As an institution committed to Catholic principles, the University recognizes the importance of creating and maintaining an environment in which faith informs the community's life and takes expression in all its programs. The University recognizes the central and indispensable role of the Ordinary of the Diocese of Venice in promoting and assisting in preserving and strengthening the University's Catholic identity. The Honors Program brings together all of the distinctive strengths of the education offered at Ave Maria University. It allows high-achieving and highly-motivated students to experience the Core Curriculum in a more challenging, accelerated, and enriching manner, creating additional opportunities for integrated studies. The Honors Program extends beyond the classroom, the library, and the laboratory, as it fosters a genuine fellowship of Christian intellectual inquiry and conversation. Ave Maria University began as Thomas S. Monaghan's dream to build an institution of Catholic higher education faithful to the Magisterium. It could produce the future faithful educators, leaders, and mentors that our challenged society needs. Through his initial financial donation of $250 million, in partnership with a generous donation of land from the Barron Collier Family in Southwest Florida, the dream began to take shape. The United States leads the world in higher education, with more than 4,000 institutions of the most diverse kind—State, private, secular, and religious. In America, the Catholic Church came late to the table in establishing colleges and universities, but by 1960 there were some 230 institutions, mainly founded by religious orders. Since then, the total number has hardly changed. The growth of older Catholic colleges and universities has often been accompanied by a degree of secularization. In many of these institutions, the Catholic identity has become quite attenuated, with many (and in some cases most) of the faculty non-Catholic or hostile to the Church. In the 40 plus years since the beginning of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic population has increased by some 50 percent. Much of that growth has occurred outside the traditional Catholic enclaves in the northeast and midwest cities, as Catholics followed the burgeoning economies of the southeast and the west. Many suffering drastic fall-off invocations did not respond to these demographic changes with new institutions in the growing Catholic population. Indeed, the last Catholic institution inaugurated as a university was in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1963. By the time Mr. Monaghan began his dream, it was evident that higher education needed a fresh, faithful voice. It can well be argued that a Catholic university is essential to the transmittal of the faith to successive generations if for no other reason. "Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it." —Proverbs 22:5-7 The role Ave Maria University intends to fill is not merely catechesis (although that has been woefully deficient in other institutions), but rather the ongoing reflection of theologians and philosophers on the integration of the truths of the faith with the social, cultural, economic, and political developments in society. 15. 16. View full school
