ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL) is a public university established in 1972. Pursuing teaching, research, and community service activities plays a major role in educating qualified specialists and personnel, whose cultural, scientific, and technical skills enable them to contribute to sustainable development both at the national and the global level. The strategic objectives of ISCTE-IUL are innovation, quality, internationalization, and the development of an entrepreneurial culture. IPAM is a school that has over 30 years of experience in teaching marketing, having always offered education of excellence near companies and the markets. Our teaching model combines theory and practice, taught by faculty with business experience and real-world challenges which are posed to students by companies. Founded in 1984, it is the oldest and largest school of marketing in Portugal and has trained over 9,000 students in its 31 years of existence. During the 1990s, IPAM sees remarkable growth. Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Lisboa –ESEL- (Lisbon School of Nursing) was set up by Decree Law no. 175/2004 of 21 July and stems from the merger of four public higher schools of nursing in Lisbon – Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Artur Ravara Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Calouste Gulbenkian de Lisboa Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Francisco Gentil and Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Maria Fernanda Resende. Its statutes were approved by Regulatory Order no. 16/2009 of 7 April (Government’s Official Gazette, 2nd Series – No. 68 - 7 April 2009), and its first management bodies – Governing Council, Pedagogical Council, and School Assembly - took office on 24 September 2007. The origin of this process dates back to 2001 with the publication of Decree-Law no. 99/2001 of 28 March as a result of the need to address the necessity to articulate synergies essential to the development of nursing education and the profession itself. The decision to set up a single school was made freely and involved making a shared development plan and implementing several joint projects. The School inherited a unique heritage from the four prestigious institutions that were behind its genesis, which underpins its references: - Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Artur Ravara, formerly called Escola Profissional de Enfermeiros (1901) and Escola de Enfermagem de Artur Ravara (1930), was the first public school of nursing in Portugal. Its origin dates back to the 19th century, with the creation, in 1886, of the first course for the training of nurses at S. José Hospital. For over 120 years, it was an irrefutable reference in the history of Portuguese nursing. - Escola Superior de Enfermagem Francisco Gentil was set up in 1940 and was then known as Escola Técnica de Enfermeiras do Instituto Português de Oncologia. It was directed by Doctor Francisco Gentil, who was committed to ensuring the training of qualified nurses in Portugal to contribute to the improvement of health care with their scientific and human skills. Sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, it was under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. - Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Calouste Gulbenkian, in Lisbon, originated in 1957 with the name Escola de Enfermagem do Hospital de Santa Maria and was established at the opening of the Teaching Hospital of Lisbon, currently Santa Maria Hospital. In 1968, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation funded the construction and the equipment of the buildings of the Calouste Gulbenkian School of Nursing of Lisbon and the Female Students Residence, which opened in 1972. It pioneered students associations in nursing and its 50 years of existence, aiming at offering quality initial training, it graduated about 5,000 nurses. - Escola Superior de Enfermagem Maria Fernanda Resende was the name adopted in 1986 by the then Escola Pós-Básica de Lisboa, in memory of nurse Maria Fernanda Resende (1923-1988), whose work greatly marked the teaching and development of nursing in Portugal. The Escola Pós-Básica de Lisboa came into operation in 1984 to optimize postgraduate training resources that were dispersed among several institutions and brought together three sections that corresponded to the former Psychiatric Nursing School of Lisbon, Teaching and Administration in Nursing, and Public Health Nursing, respectively. With the integration of nursing teaching in Polytechnic Higher Education in 1989 (Decree-Law no. 480/88, of 23 December), all the aforementioned schools began to teach the Degree in Nursing, which awarded the academic degree of Ordinary Bachelor, except ESE Maria Fernanda Resende, which offered specialized degree courses in nursing. In 1999, the Licenciatura degree in Nursing was created (Decree-Law no. 353/99, of 3 September), and all schools started to award the academic degree of Licenciado (Bachelor with Honours) and offer postgraduate training. With Decree-Law no. 99/2001, of 28 March, these schools became the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and, subsequently, of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. The merging process started in 2004, and to that end, a monitoring committee was set up to lead the process of creating the statutes of ESEL and electing the first management board. The Unit of the Documentation Centre and Library of ESEL specialized in nursing science, health sciences, and social and human sciences, aims to support all ESEL’s activity sectors, providing, in the best use conditions, the bibliographic resources necessary for teaching, researching, continuing education, and cultural extension activities. ESEL’s collection has about 17 000 titles (monographs, reference works, theses, dissertations, and audiovisual materials), around 80 paper periodicals, and approximately 2 500 periodical publications in full-text digital format and e-books. Universities in Portugal have an old tradition. The first University was founded in 1289 in Coimbra, as a response to the growing need for education, dissemination of knowledge, and exchange of ideas, as well as communication with other European Universities. This tradition has remained to this day in which universities are fundamental institutions in Portuguese society. Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded on the 11th of August 1973 and is the youngest of Lisbon’s three state Universities. Integrated within a framework of expansion and diversification of higher education, the University adopted a new model within the Portuguese system that stressed interdisciplinary approaches, technological developments while, at the same time, safeguarding offerings in traditional academic domains including medicine, sciences, and humanities. The founding of NOVA was a response to an ever-increasing demand for higher education in Portugal, in general, and in the city of Lisbon, in particular. Since its inception, NOVA has aimed to innovate higher education in Portugal and to contribute to the social and economic development of the country. Following its first four years of existence, the initial model was adapted to carry out the University’s commitment towards excellence in teaching and research. During its first years, the University cantered its offerings mainly on graduate and specialist programs, but since the end of 1977, NOVA has been steadily expanding its offerings. The name Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA) stands for creativity and innovation. Proud of its youth, as one of the most recent public universities within the Lisbon metropolitan area, NOVA spans through three councils: Lisboa, Almada, and Oeiras. NOVA integrates 41 scientific research centers funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), including 3 associated laboratories (in partnership with other institutions). In the last assessment by FCT (2007-2008), 25 of these centers were graded as “Excellent” or “Very Good”, accounting for 75%. The excellent quality of research in many areas is also a cornerstone in the international culture of NOVA. Besides intense exchanges in the European space, NOVA also develops cooperation ties with Brazil and Portuguese-speaking countries. It is our short-term goal to also cooperate with Higher Education institutions from Latin America. The university is thus actively involved in cooperation actions promoted by the Portuguese Government, in particular with North-American universities, such as the University of Texas at Austin (UTA), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), namely in master’s courses and doctoral and research programs. University Católica Portuguesa (better known in Portugal as UCP or just "Católica") was established in 1967 by decree of the Holy See (Lusitanorum Nobilissima Gens), at the request of the Portuguese Bishops' conference and under Concordat Law. Universidade Católica Portuguesa is an academic community that helps defend and develop human beings and his/her cultural heritage through research, teaching, and services. UCP is an independent not-for-profit organization of a public utility, created by the Congregation for Catholic Education (Holy See) under an international treaty, the Concordat between Portugal and the Vatican, and recognized by the Portuguese State in 1971. The university's legal framework is established by Decree-Law 128/90 (17 April). The university's current statutes, issued in 1993, establish the following ruling bodies - High Chancellor, Rector, Board of Trustees, Rector's Council, Financial Management Board. The following are also aging bodies of the university: the Congregation for Catholic Education and the Portuguese Bishops' Conference. UCP degree programs and the resulting qualifications (bachelor's, master's, and doctorate) have the same value and effects like those from state universities (Decree-Law 128/90). Since it started operating in 2009, A3ES (the Portuguese Evaluation, Quality-assurance, and Accreditation Agency for Higher Education) has been accrediting and evaluating our degree programs. UCP publishes in a broad range of areas, including collections, academic journals, and newsletters from the faculties and study centers. In 1998, the university created its own publishing company - Universidade Católica Editora - which publishes in a wide range of academic areas, ranging from theology to biotechnology and the social sciences to engineering.
