Having celebrated 50 years of existence, the ICS is well established as an excellent Institute for Research in the Social Sciences. Our researchers distinguish themselves both at the national and the international level in the various areas of knowledge, and the Institute has acquired, over the years a vast experience in postgraduate training.
In terms of postgraduate programs, the ICS has established different formats of teaching and training. There are strategic partnerships with other centers of advanced training, as well as FCT doctoral programs in a few areas. Students choose the ICS because our Institution is equated with excellence, rigor, and close interaction between researchers and students. Presently, there are over 100 Doctoral students in the various Social Sciences areas at the ICS.
ICS-University of Lisbon is a post-graduate research and teaching institute, accredited by the Foundation for Science and Technology as an Associate Laboratory. ICS stands as a leading institute in the production and dissemination of advanced scientific knowledge in several fields of the social sciences, nationally and internationally. It offers 10 doctoral programs, 9 of which are in association. Currently, it includes about 160 Ph.D. students working actively on their dissertations. Between 2013 and 2017, 56 Ph.D. students successfully defended their thesis. ICS currently includes 105 researchers, dedicated to supervising dissertations in the fields of Anthropology, Political Science, Human Geography, History, Social Psychology, and Sociology, and other transdisciplinary study areas. ICS provides its doctoral students with individualized training and tutoring in a research environment, with opportunities for enrichment and theoretical and methodological improvement, integrated into an internationalized and multidisciplinary community, as well as the development of transversal competencies in specialized domains.
These activities result from the collaboration between researchers of different disciplinary areas (Social and Cultural Anthropology, Economics, History, Human Geography, Political Science, Social Psychology, and Sociology), organized into 7 Research Groups: Empires, Colonialism & Post-Colonial Societies Environment, Territory and Society Identities, Cultures, Vulnerabilities Life course, Inequality & Solidarity: Practices and Policies Power, Society & Globalization Regimes & Political Institutions Socio-Political Attitudes & Behaviours.
ICS has always been rated as an Institution of Excellence (the highest rating) by international FCT panels (1996, 1999, 2005, 2008, and 2014). These evaluations have provided a stimulus for innovative and interdisciplinary research, for high-quality teaching, and for enhancing the social relevance of knowledge produced by ICS. Over fifty years, the driving force behind ICS has been the combination of researchers and the ideas they investigate with a scientific culture characterized by methodological and theoretical diversity.
Until 2020, ICS will be contributing to Changing Societies: Legacies and Challenges - a research agenda that lead the way to a new era as a research unit within the newly-merged University of Lisbon (ULisbon). This strategy is shaped by the need to respond to emerging societal trends and social issues in a changing and unstable world (namely those concerning Inequality, Citizenship, and Sustainability), taking into account both its structural underpinnings and short-term dynamics.
