About Me

  1. For more than 290 years, St Petersburg State University has been committed to advancing science and training highly qualified professionals. The University dates back to 1724 when Peter the Great founded the Academy of Sciences and Arts and the first Academic University and the university preparatory school in Russia. We take special pride in the constellation of our outstanding staff and alumni. SPbU has given the world many famous people in science, politics, business, sports, literature, and art. The University has Nobel Prize winners among its staff and alumni: physiologist Ivan Pavlov, biologist Ilya Mechnikov, physical chemist Nikolay Semyonov, physicist Lev Landau Aleksandr Prokhorov, mathematician, and economist Leonid Kantorovich. SPbU is also an alma mater to outstanding researchers, scholars, academics, political and social leaders: Dmitry Mendeleev, Vladimir Vernadsky, and Dmitry Likhachev, to name but a few. The world owes our University's most prominent cultural leaders, writers, and artists: Ivan Turgenev, Pavel Brullov, Alexander Blok, Alexandre Benois, Sergei Diaghilev, and Igor Stravinsky. Among the University alumni, we are also proud to mention leaders of the Russian Government: Boris Stürmer, Alexander Kerensky, Vladimir Lenin, Presidents of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev. Today, by bringing together traditions and innovations, St Petersburg University sets the pace for developing science, education, and culture in Russia and across the world. We are consistently ranked highly in international university rankings (Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities) and subject rankings, which proves the success of our development strategy. We have leading universities and major corporations as our academic and business partners. The University is fully equipped to provide a diverse range of opportunities for education, research, and creativity: the richest Research Library named after Maksim Gorky, a comprehensive digital collection of scholarly editions, a state-of-the-art Research Park, laboratories headed by leading scientists, museums, a publishing house, sports clubs, a University choir, orchestras, drama and dance studios, and many more. In 2009, the Federal Law granted St Petersburg State University and Moscow State University the special status of 'unique scientific and educational complexes …. instrumental in the development of Russian society.' SPbU was granted the privilege to set its educational standards, award its diplomas and state-recognized academic degrees of Candidate of Sciences and Doctor of Sciences. SPbU runs an open competition to finance research in priority branches of science and create new research laboratories. We are actively developing postdoctoral programs and provide corporate housing for our academic staff. View full university
  2. In 1993 The Bonch-Bruevich Leningrad Electro-Technical Institute of Communications obtained the status of a state university. More than 8,000 students in the university, including more than 6,000 studying full time, almost 1,500 students in Saint-Petersburg College of Telecommunications, and more than 3,000 students in Archangelsk and Smolensk branches. The university is proud of its teachers. Many of them have been working in the university for decades. Almost 400 people out of 600 teachers have scientific degrees and titles. Seventy-five doctors of sciences are teaching in the university. Eleven faculties of the university have 43 chairs. Every chair is an organized scientific and pedagogical group that unites teachers, scientific staff, and administrative personnel, who participate in training, methodological, and scientific work. The size of the university, as a communication scientific and educational complex, is imposing: there are six study and laboratory buildings (total space is more than 65,000 square meters), with an assembly hall, conference halls, dozens of study and scientific laboratories, computer classes, and specialized classrooms. The university has at its disposal a complete complex of infrastructure objects: three dormitories for 1,500 people, a big gymnasium, sports halls, a scientific and technical library, a full university Internet node, and much, much more. But the main thing that makes it possible for the university to face the future with confidence is the creative and scientific potential of teachers, scientific staff, students' enthusiasm, and aspiration to knowledge. High demand for graduates of The Bonch-Bruevich Saint-Petersburg State University of Telecommunications, as of the most advanced training and scientific center, that ensures the formation of human recourses reserve for communications, demand for the graduates from the leading telecommunication enterprises of the region, all this is the result of work done by all the personnel of the university, and is a guarantee for its dynamic development in the coming years. Today, the university is the region's most significant training and scientific complex specialized in information technologies and communications. View full university
  3. Our University is a multidisciplinary educational complex that includes two higher schools, 18 Institutes, and two colleges. The university trains specialists in 249 secondary vocational, undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional development programs in 14 primary specialties. More than 16,000 students major in design, the humanities, engineering, economy, and pedagogy study here. The reason for young people's keen interest in higher education to a large extent is their understanding that this is an effective way to ensure a decent position in society and be able to adapt to social and economic conditions of the ever-changing modern world. Today everybody realizes the advantages that we can enjoy using modern technologies in our lives and everyday activities. Obtaining a contemporary and sought after the degree is the main priority for young people. The multilevel education system, various educational programs, specialties, and subject areas provide a comprehensive career profile. To assist prospective students in choosing their specialty, we have created a system of pre-university training. It includes colleges, schools with different specializations and courses, and it functions successfully. The University campus includes eight academic buildings, most of them being in the historic city center. There are also four students' dormitories and six countryside properties. Modern equipment of the departments, academic and research laboratories, lecture halls, experiments, test production workshops, and industrial workshops of the research and production center allows for the delivery of vocational and higher professional education programs. International research and educational programs are rapidly developing at the University. Considerable attention is paid to students' interest in sports and creative activities, so several events are held annually, namely 'Admiralty Needle' International Contest for Young Designers, 'Breath of Spring' all-Russia contest for fashion designers. There are sports departments, workout facilities, and classical music concerts in the 'Students Philharmonic' frame. Our students' lives are always full of exciting events, creativity, research, active and exciting leisure. These events are reflected in the University periodicals, 'texStyle' newspaper, and 'Style-Sttextileagazine. View full university

In the 1920s, people in St. Petersburg began to talk about the need for higher learning institutions to provide job skills training to residents of modest means. At the time, higher education only was available to those who could afford to travel to distant cities and stay there long enough to complete their studies. So in September 1927, with the backing of local business and political leaders, Florida's first two-year institution of higher learning, St. Petersburg Junior College, opened in a new wing of the then-new St. Petersburg High School. Enrollment: 102, taught by a faculty of 14. The first college president was George Lynch, who also served as Superintendent of Public Instruction, St. Petersburg Public Schools. There were 48 members of the first graduating class in 1929. More than half received state teaching certificates. At the time, the need for certified teachers in Pinellas County was great and growing, and a two-year college diploma was all that was needed for certification. In 1931, the college, which was now in its building overlooking Mirror Lake in downtown St. Petersburg, became accredited and has remained so to this day.
  5. Welcome to the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where a half-century of tradition meets innovation. At USF St. Petersburg, students enjoy smaller classes. Professors who know you by name. Students are researching the undergraduate and graduate levels – side by side with professors. A setting that encourages creativity. All the advantages of a large public university, including nationally ranked NCAA football, men's basketball, women's softball, and women's sailing. Located on beautiful Bayboro Harbor on the shores of Tampa Bay, students, faculty, and staff have access to sailing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding. A bustling downtown is a short walk away, with an array of world-class museums, a performing arts center, restaurants, nightclubs, and parks. Some of the finest beaches in the country are just a 15-minute drive away. A growing residential student population totaling more than 600, including 200 at the University Student Center, includes a dining facility called The Reef offering full-service meal plans, outdoor basketball courts, and spacious meeting rooms. Because of the campus's intimate size, a walk to class or the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library is a walk with friends — students with intense energy who like to get things done and make a difference. Innovation, collaboration, and community engagement are not just buzz words at USF St. Petersburg. They are among the core principles and the outgrowth of a creative environment on display in every corner of the community. Our students and professors are not cloistered in an ivory tower but engaged in the broader community — future journalists writing about real people in Midtown St. Petersburg, psychology majors working with African-American families on co-parenting strategies, education faculty training middle school teachers better ways for kids to learn math, accounting students helping low-income and elderly residents with their income taxes. The community also comes to campus: business and political leaders offering real-word experiences, lectures by visiting scholars, thousands of book lovers drawn to best-selling authors at the Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading, and thousands more to the annual St. Petersburg Science Festival. No need to imagine: Exciting things like these are happening around every corner at USF St. Petersburg. Inspire scholars to lead lives of impact. USF St. Petersburg will shine. USF St. Petersburg faculty and administrators will shoulder with students and community partners to build a better world. We will challenge ourselves to excel in research, teaching, and service. Continuing Education programs are for adult learners who are interested in furthering their knowledge about topics of interest. There is no college credit received for the coursework; therefore, there are no credit hours delegated to a degree program. Most of our bachelor's programs – and many of our master's programs – contain online learning opportunities. Online learning means the class has a separation of either space or time between students, instructors, and the rest of the class. Online learning offered at USF St. Petersburg is Web-based, meaning interaction among students and his/her instructors and classmates is conducted through sophisticated Websites. Some classes may have an on-campus (face to face) orientation, but the rest of the class then occurs online. Usf st. Petersburg is the place to know and is known. Besides offering you an excellent education in a small classroom setting, we also offer excellent opportunities to get involved beyond the classroom. Please take advantage of the many activities and programs we have available. Make connections, make a difference, and make the most out of your college experience. Research is at the heart of the USFSP experience, and it is not limited to graduate students. Among the most distinctive aspects of our curriculum are the myriad opportunities for undergraduate research. USF St. Petersburg has a history rich with academic excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, and ingenuity. Its founders opened the doors to students on Sept. 5, 1965, and throughout its history, this academic cove on Bayboro Harbor has embraced enormous change as Florida's need for higher education intensified. USF St. Petersburg was the first regional higher education institution in Florida. USF St. Petersburg's early administrators were creative and ambitious, building support from the St. Petersburg City Council, St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Legislature, the Board of Regents, and intellectual leaders such as Nelson Poynter of the St. Petersburg Times, to lead the institution toward its current role as an urban graduate institution. In the late 1990s, lawmakers began the process that would lead to USF St. Petersburg becoming a separately accredited institution within the USF System. That led to a rapid expansion under interim VP/CEO Ralph Wilcox. The Florida Legislature made it official in 2002 with a law creating the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Its first residence hall broke ground in 2005. In 2006, USFSP was awarded separate accreditation by the Southern Association of College and Schools. Under the leadership of Regional Vice-Chancellor Margaret Sullivan, the accreditation was reaffirmed in 2011.

  21. Founded in 1994 with the active support of the city of St. Petersburg, the European University began operating as an elite graduate school in the social sciences and humanities in 1996. From its inception, the mission of EUSP has been to meet the needs of Russian social development by training a new generation of teachers and scholars in the best Russian and Western traditions. The European University is one of only a few non-state universities fully qualified by the Ministry of Education to award advanced graduate degrees. Over some 20 years, EUSP has gained an international reputation for its faculty's superb scholarship and the training of Russia's best and brightest graduate students at the highest international levels. Like the best private universities outside Russia, the EUSP's independence is both intellectual and political. With a significant proportion of faculty with degrees from leading western institutions, and close relations with Stanford, Michigan, Cambridge University, Georgetown, Harvard, Helsinki University, and the University of California, Berkeley, of Michigan, Ann Arbor Cambridge University (UK) Helsinki University (Finland), and the European University Institute in Florence, EUSP has a strong commitment to the integration of Russian scholarship with scholarship in Europe and America. With Russia's historical distance from the West in intellectual and social terms, this has been a fundamentally important position, one that encourages mobility and encourages graduates to pursue their teaching and scholarly careers at home. For non-Russians, the International MA in Russian Studies is the only permanent program at the graduate level in Russia that offers degrees in sociology, political science, and cultural studies to students from North America, Europe, and Asia. The University is an essential agent of innovation and change in other ways as well. As the Russian government itself has recognized, its democratic governance system serves as a model for other Russian institutions striving for international recognition. EUSP was an initiator of private endowment funding that has become a standard in other universities and cultural institutions. Although entirely independent of state control, the University often hosts actual government figures and Russian and international scholars for seminars and lectures on social importance issues. EUSP faculty and staff are also regularly invited as expert consultants by the Russian Federation Public Chamber, the Ministry of Economic Development, and the Ministry of Education and Science. The University is also actively involved with the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Petersburg Dialogue Forum, and the Krasnoyarsk Economic Forum. Partly for this reason, partly because our graduates are among Russia's best, many not only hold positions in leading universities but occupy key posts in government and non-governmental organizations and leading Russian and international companies. More than forty percent of those who have finished our core educational program have successfully defended their dissertations. The University's mission is to satisfy societal needs in raising and expanding the professional qualification of specialists and developing their creative and scholarly potential based on Russian and international experience and cooperation. Due to its superlative professionalism and unique scholarly potential, EUSP has acquired a reputation as one of the country's most dynamic and modern educational institutions. EUSP has greater independence from the Russian governmental bureaucracy than most other Russian universities. This independence is essential for both intellectual and political reasons. Universities in Russia were traditionally under the government's control, to the extent of questions of the content of instruction and research, political ideology, and administration. In EUSP, a high proportion of faculty have degrees from prominent Western universities. The University employs Russians with PhDs from such recognized schools as the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Cambridge University (UK), Helsinki University (Finland), a.o. EUSP commits to the integration of Russian scholarship with scholarship in Europe and America. Against the background of Russian scholarship's continuing isolation from the West, this is a fundamentally important position. EUSP encourages mobility but combats the brain drain. Rather than promoting graduate students' departure to the West, EUSP invites Western students to come and study in Russia. The International MA in Russian Studies is the ONLY permanent program at the graduate level in Russia that offers degrees in sociology, political science, and cultural studies to students from North America, Europe, and Asia (about 50 students annually). Both international and Russian students enjoy the advantages of studying in a truly international setting. USP is a decisive agent of innovation and change, introducing and disseminating new standards and practices in the Russian educational system. EUSP's educational programs are popular amongst talented graduates of Russian universities, who currently hail from fifty-four Russian regions and amongst graduates of foreign universities (mainly in Western Europe and North America). For these students, EUSP offers special international programs taught entirely in English. EUSP's teaching faculty is staffed by well-known academics who have achieved significant results and recognition in their fields. Many of them received their PhDs from the best universities in Europe and the US and have experience teaching in foreign universities.

View full university
