Mount Scopus Memorial College opened its doors in St. Kilda Rd in February 1949 with 143 students. Like the College's motto 'Chazak ve'ematz' - Be Strong and of Good Courage - its Founders engaged courage and strength to establish our first Jewish Day School amidst opposition from a community grappling with an influx of Holocaust survivors. Their dream was to have a school where all Jewish children could attend, regardless of means, to learn of their heritage, be proud Jews and dedicated Israel supporters while understanding their role in Australian society. From the very beginning, our students' academic achievements have been held in high esteem. As the College's popularity and reputation grew, so did the need for additional space and resources. In 1953 the College moved to larger premises on vast expanses of land in Burwood. Two junior campuses, closer to the Jewish center of Melbourne, cater to our younger students. Today, as one of the most respected Jewish Day Schools globally, it offers educationally enriching programs, dedicated staff, and world-class facilities. And in line with the dream of all those years ago, the College continues to strive to provide a Scopus experience for all Jewish children.
This is a Board directive, which we must adhere to. MECS began as a dream in the mid-1950s! Christian parents dreamed of education with a Christian perspective for their children – and grandchildren. In the 1960s, they organized themselves and were very active in raising funds. In 1964, the pioneers formed their Association of Parents for Christian Education, Mount Evelyn, and accelerated the pace of work to establish a Christian school. With daring and vision in 1970, they purchased our wonderful six-hectare school property. Their dreams were realized when they opened Mount Evelyn, Christian Primary School on the 3rd of February 1973 – a full 19 years after the very first fundraising effort. The school opened with three teachers teaching 80 children in Years Foundation to 6 in three composite groups. We have two main motives for operating as a Christian school. The first is that we believe that Jesus Christ is to be Lord over every single part of life, including the education of our children. The second is that God has given parents, the responsibility of nurturing their children. Their education is a major part of that. MECS sees its primary task as unfolding God’s world with children in the educational domain (families and church also do this but in other domains of life). This involves students understanding that they are God’s creative handiwork, unique, precious, and loved, made in God’s image, and gifted in many ways. They also learn how to work and play within the world, and what God asks of them. As students understand themselves, their world, and have a healthy view of the calling God has for them, they are well equipped and positioned to engage as active participants in society and as disciples of the Lord. Such a holistic understanding stands in stark contrast to the broad Australian view that schools exist to provide students with basic skills and the where-with-all to get a good job at the end of the process. One is a view of God’s kingdom and the call to serve, the other, the material world in which one needs to work. Two very different views about education.

Steiner took this opportunity to demonstrate how a curriculum and teaching methods could address the growing child's needs. Such was the success of this venture that his ideas spread rapidly throughout Europe and have since radiated across the world. There are now over 900 Waldorf schools in more than 45 countries, and the number continues to grow. More than ever, education faces the challenge of preparing young people for life in a complex and continually changing world. Waldorf Schools take up this challenge by offering an education that is alive and full of wonder and strives to awaken the young person's inner life. In proposing minimum curriculum requirements for Learning Areas within Catholic schools, it is critical to note that every curriculum area has a religious and a social, emotional dimension a capacity to assist students in examining the world of human culture and the world of religion, providing knowledge and skills through an active process, and fostering attitudes and values that are life-giving and that assist young people in searching for meaning and truth. All Queensland children are eligible to attend full-time Prep from the beginning of the school year in which they will reach the age of 5 years by 30 June. Children whose birthday is in July through to December commence Prep at the beginning of the school year after their fifth birthday. Prep is the first year of school and provides the foundation for your child’s education. It is a full-time program held in primary schools. Children attend Monday-Friday for the full school day. Prep teachers use the Foundation Year of the Australian Curriculum—to guide children’s learning. The Foundation Year in the Australian Curriculum refers to the year before Year 1. In Queensland, this is called Prep.

The school has changed significantly over the last few years with the addition of some excellent new facilities. We are now a three-form entry school and will grow to our maximum size in 2020. Sheen Mount School aims for excellence. We promote this through an enriched curriculum and by supporting all children to fulfill their potential. Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child. At Sheen Mount, we take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously. The Headteacher, Ian Hutchings, is the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead. At Sheen Mount School, we have experience providing for the most frequently occurring special educational needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, social communication difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders, learning difficulties, and behavior difficulties. There are other kinds of special educational needs, which do not occur as frequently and with which the school is less familiar, but we can access training and advice so that these kinds of needs can be met. The school currently meets the needs of 17 pupils with Education, Health and Care plans or a statement of SEN where extra ‘top up’ funding comes from the local authority. These include the following kinds of needs: autistic spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, social communication difficulties, sensory processing issues, and global delay. Also, there are genetic disorders with related educational needs including Downs Syndrome and Prader Willi Syndrome. Sheen Mount supports a further 18 children under SEN Support with the following needs: speech and language delays, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit disorder, global delay, specific learning difficulties, and social and emotional health difficulties. The school is the proud owner of a beautiful library, which the children use regularly to consult, read and borrow books. Thanks to the support of the Parent Staff Association the school is now able to provide an online version of its library catalog. The new system, called Junior Librarian, allows pupils, staff, and parents to view our school library catalog online and pupils are encouraged to use this to help with research, to write reviews about books they have read, and to search for new books and other library resources. Governors do not manage a school on a day-to-day basis but carry out an essential role in overseeing the development of the school. Governors may lend support in a variety of ways but all their responsibilities lead back to the core task of steering the school in its development. Three central pillars are supporting this endeavor. Being a critical friend underpins school governorship. We can be defined as a trusted person who asks provocative questions, provides information to be examined from another perspective, and offers critiques of a person’s work in a friendly way. A critical friend takes the time to fully understand the context of the work presented and the outcomes that the person or group is working toward. The friend is an advocate for the success of that work. Governing bodies are established by law as corporate bodies, responsibility for actions and decisions lies with the whole governing body and not with individual members. The Sheen Mount School Governing Body is divided into three committees, Resources, Standards, and Pastoral. Committees meet twice a term. The Full Governing Body also meets twice a term. The term of office for a governor is four years, which allows Governors sufficient time to see plans through from initial discussion to implementation. Of course, some Governors remain for much longer and this has often been the case at Sheen Mount. A substantial time commitment is involved but nearly all preparatory reading can be done at home. Meetings are held at the school in the evenings. Governors are encouraged to, and regularly do visit the school during the day. Sheen Mount School is set in spacious grounds with mature trees and open spaces creating a welcoming environment. Our well-equipped classrooms all have Interactive Whiteboard technology. We also have a well-resourced music room and ICT Suite. The whole school community works hard to provide the very best for all children – new ideas are always being explored to make the school an even better place to play, grow and learn. Children are extremely well supported during their time at Sheen Mount. All staff work to ensure that children thrive in a caring setting and learn to make healthy choices and gain important life skills. Our experienced support staff enhances the class teaching and plays a large part in pastoral care, particularly at playtimes. The support for children at playtime is further enhanced by our ‘Buddy’ system when older children assist younger children with games and activities. There are strong links with a varied range of external support agencies. Children have many opportunities to contribute their opinions about school life both informally within their class and formally through School Council. Mount Florida Primary and Nursery Class is a three-story sandstone building that was built in 1897 so it is over one hundred years old. The school is now classed as a listed building. Only this term have we been fortunate enough to have new windows installed making the school watertight. A lot more light is coming in making the classrooms and the whole school brighter. The school is situated near Hampden Park in between Carmunnock Road and Cathcart Road. There are two playgrounds. The infant classes are on the upper playground in Carmunnock Road and P4-7 is in the larger lower playground on Cathcart Road. Mount Florida is a non-denominational, multi-racial school. At present we have 237 primary school pupils and 10 classes. We have a nursery class that accommodates 20 children in the morning session and 20 children in the afternoon session. The Curriculum we offer is A Curriculum for Excellence – Early Level. This is a broad and deep general education. The curriculum is experiential and child-centered advocating ‘learning through play. It sets out a wide range of experiences that enable children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors. Through engaging activities, the children develop the skills and concepts needed for living in a multi-cultural society. Parents are valued for their role in this partnership of education. You are your child’s first and most important educator and we look forward to working with you and sharing the extensive knowledge and understanding you have of your child. We promote learning through a whole range of activities and experiences. Activities involve the child in making decisions, investigating, and solving problems. In Primary 1, ORT is also used for keyword reading and recognition. In infants, we also use the Jolly program for spelling and grammar. Further up the school, we use Nelson resources for spelling, grammar, and handwriting. We are lucky enough to have Nelson fonts on our PCs. This means we can produce worksheets with the appropriate letter formation. You have probably seen it in homework jotters. The upper school also uses PrimEd for spelling. Throughout the school, we use Heinemann Active Maths. Although it is used in primary 1, the very clever p1 teachers have also made many wonderful resources of their own. These are used in conjunction with Number Zoo. Using these resources, the teachers can take the children through number formation as well as counting and simple adding and taking away. Heinemann Active Maths (HAM) is split into 2 sections: Exploring Number and Beyond Number. Exploring Number covers all addition and subtraction as well as tables and multiplication and division. Beyond Number covers all other aspects of mathematics. This includes money, measure, time, and shape.
Heath Mount Primary School is a two-form entry school, located near the center of Birmingham. Our school has four hundred and twenty pupils from a range of ethnic backgrounds. We are very fortunate to have a large number of staff at our school, totaling over 65. We are very proud of the internal furnishings of the school’s building. We work hard to create a bright, exciting, learning-focused environment where children prosper and enjoy their learning.
