We are a community school in The London Borough Of Richmond Upon Thames, a three-form entry primary school with an excellent reputation for providing fun and happiness, combined with high standards of education, going back many, many years. The children, staff, and parents consistently move the school forward in an exciting and enriching way, we never stand still! We aim to provide a well-rounded, broad-based, exciting education, for all our children. Our pupils have a reputation as confident, well-mannered, and sociable people who will participate in and contribute to the community. Our latest OFSTED inspection and our consistently strong annual results show a school that records outstanding educational achievement and a high level of value add across the board. Children are admitted to the school in the Autumn Term of the school year in which they have their 5th birthday. Following home visits during the first week of the Autumn term children will attend school full time (9.00 am-3.15 pm). Children whose birthday falls between 1 April and 31 August may delay entry into school until January if their parents wish. There are regular visits for prospective parents please contact the school to find out when the next available tour is. The tour lasts approximately one hour where you will be shown a DVD about the school, then taken around the school to see the staff and children in our stimulating school environment. Appointments can be made by contacting the school office and everyone is welcome. At East Sheen Primary School we are committed to planning and delivering an exciting and stimulating broad-based curriculum for all our pupils. English and mathematics are central aspects of the primary curriculum but we recognize the importance of computing, science and design, and technology in preparing children for today's world. We also fully value the importance of the ‘Arts’ in enriching our children's learning through creative studies and the importance of inquiry through history and geography. Our emphasis on sport and healthy eating encourages our children to keep active and make the right choices to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our curriculum is designed to develop a curiosity and a love for learning, to foster and develop imagination, investigation, and independence. This ethos is woven into everything we do with our children, through well-structured lessons and learning experiences, which lead to confident, enthusiastic learners, well prepared for secondary education, and the changing pace and challenges of modern life. Our Governing Body is committed to helping the Headteacher, Elizabeth Page, and her team, provide the best possible educational environment. Governors work in strong co-operation with the teaching staff and are currently implementing long term plans for the improvement of the whole school environment, to bring all our classrooms up to a high standard. We have recently undergone a major building project as part of the expansion to three form entries and are delighted with the quality of all our classrooms. The dining room and large new hall are at the center of the school community. We have an all-weather playing field to provide a fantastic year-round outdoor facility. Working in partnership with our PTA, we have installed an exciting climbing frame, trim trail, and outdoor learning spaces. Our PTA is exceptionally active and has raised substantial funds over the years to help with these and many other improvements. Formative assessment is used daily and is the judgment teachers make regarding the progress and learning of each child. Such assessment is made using a range of information, including questioning and answering, observations, marking of work, dialogue, peer, and self-assessments. Summative assessment in the form of written tests is also used to track pupil progress. Assessment is key to ensuring pupils make progress and is the starting point for the planning of each lesson. At East Sheen Primary School we use a tool called “Target Tracker” to monitor children’s progress and attainment as they move through school. Children are assessed against the national curriculum objectives as they are taught each year group curriculum. Teachers make a judgment as to when they are confident that a child has a secure understanding of each objective and use a color code to record this. Safeguarding is the highest priority in school. It is also a huge area, covering child protection, online safety, site security, health and safety, evacuation, lockdown, anti-bullying, radicalization, racism, female genital mutilation, and more. All employees have annual training and regular updates to make sure knowledge and understanding of safeguarding are current. The school has changed significantly over the last few years with the addition of some excellent new facilities. We are now a three-form entry school and will grow to our maximum size in 2020. Sheen Mount School aims for excellence. We promote this through an enriched curriculum and by supporting all children to fulfill their potential. Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child. At Sheen Mount, we take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously. The Headteacher, Ian Hutchings, is the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead. At Sheen Mount School, we have experience providing for the most frequently occurring special educational needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, social communication difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders, learning difficulties, and behavior difficulties. There are other kinds of special educational needs, which do not occur as frequently and with which the school is less familiar, but we can access training and advice so that these kinds of needs can be met. The school currently meets the needs of 17 pupils with Education, Health and Care plans or a statement of SEN where extra ‘top up’ funding comes from the local authority. These include the following kinds of needs: autistic spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, social communication difficulties, sensory processing issues, and global delay. Also, there are genetic disorders with related educational needs including Downs Syndrome and Prader Willi Syndrome. Sheen Mount supports a further 18 children under SEN Support with the following needs: speech and language delays, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit disorder, global delay, specific learning difficulties, and social and emotional health difficulties. The school is the proud owner of a beautiful library, which the children use regularly to consult, read and borrow books. Thanks to the support of the Parent Staff Association the school is now able to provide an online version of its library catalog. The new system, called Junior Librarian, allows pupils, staff, and parents to view our school library catalog online and pupils are encouraged to use this to help with research, to write reviews about books they have read, and to search for new books and other library resources. Governors do not manage a school on a day-to-day basis but carry out an essential role in overseeing the development of the school. Governors may lend support in a variety of ways but all their responsibilities lead back to the core task of steering the school in its development. Three central pillars are supporting this endeavor. Being a critical friend underpins school governorship. We can be defined as a trusted person who asks provocative questions, provides information to be examined from another perspective, and offers critiques of a person’s work in a friendly way. A critical friend takes the time to fully understand the context of the work presented and the outcomes that the person or group is working toward. The friend is an advocate for the success of that work. Governing bodies are established by law as corporate bodies, responsibility for actions and decisions lies with the whole governing body and not with individual members. The Sheen Mount School Governing Body is divided into three committees, Resources, Standards, and Pastoral. Committees meet twice a term. The Full Governing Body also meets twice a term. The term of office for a governor is four years, which allows Governors sufficient time to see plans through from initial discussion to implementation. Of course, some Governors remain for much longer and this has often been the case at Sheen Mount. A substantial time commitment is involved but nearly all preparatory reading can be done at home. Meetings are held at the school in the evenings. Governors are encouraged to, and regularly do visit the school during the day. Sheen Mount School is set in spacious grounds with mature trees and open spaces creating a welcoming environment. Our well-equipped classrooms all have Interactive Whiteboard technology. We also have a well-resourced music room and ICT Suite. The whole school community works hard to provide the very best for all children – new ideas are always being explored to make the school an even better place to play, grow and learn. Children are extremely well supported during their time at Sheen Mount. All staff work to ensure that children thrive in a caring setting and learn to make healthy choices and gain important life skills. Our experienced support staff enhances the class teaching and plays a large part in pastoral care, particularly at playtimes. The support for children at playtime is further enhanced by our ‘Buddy’ system when older children assist younger children with games and activities. There are strong links with a varied range of external support agencies. Children have many opportunities to contribute their opinions about school life both informally within their class and formally through School Council. Our Learning Support Team has dedicated bases within the school. These well-resourced facilities are used to help children whose learning is developing at a different pace and who may require long or short-term individual or group support.
