In 1879, the Bethlehem Baptist Association members founded the school, then called Florida Baptist Institute, in Live Oak to create "a College of instruction for our ministers and children." The Reverend J. L. A. Fish was its first president. Despite a promising start, racial tensions soon cast a shadow over the Institute. In April 1892, after unknown persons fired shots into one of the school's buildings, then-President Rev. Matthew Gilbert and other staff members fled Live Oak for Jacksonville, where he founded the Florida Baptist Academy in the basement of Bethel Baptist Church. They began holding classes in May 1892, with Sarah Ann Blocker as the primary instructor. The school in Live Oak, however, continued to operate even after this splintering.
  2. An academic year in a multicultural international school is full of challenges and achievements of a different kind. I make this statement taking into consideration our heterogeneous student body from over 40 countries who study, play, and pray together under a common umbrella. GMIS is a non-denominational institution and we strive continuously to maintain this order. A spirit of camaraderie, cooperation, and friendliness prevail in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, gym, school buses, playfields, and the school campus. Throughout the school year, students are actively involved in a dynamic curriculum, which encompasses creative thinking, inquiry, originality in writing, and proactive discussions with teachers who through their teamwork and dedication motivate and encourage even the weak students to do well in the study, sports, and multidimensional activities. A sense of satisfaction, happiness, and achievement is felt by all of us when we see our students developing, learning, and attaining high goals. We also emphasize cultivating emotional intelligence, a spirit of charity, and empathy in all our students. Our pupils are constantly made aware of all that is taking place in the world so that they can develop into responsible citizens and become the guardians of the environment of our planet earth. Parents have been cooperative and followed the guidelines of the school and we too readily heard their views and incorporated them into the day-to-day running of the school. After all, GMIS is a big family which works on mutual support where the students are cheerful and hardworking. Our students are full of enthusiasm and joy. They like to come to school and meet the multifarious challenges posed to them by the teachers. The teachers also instill the values of creative thinking, reading good books, confidence-building and respecting others' values and beliefs, and developing a spirit of tolerance. Two thousand years ago, Socrates had said that education is the eliciting of knowledge and creative thinking from the mind. We at GMIS truly believe in this philosophy linked with International Baccalaureate PYP, MYP, and Diploma programs which also focus on original thinking, human values, concern for fellow beings and our planet earth. We do not believe in complacency, knowing fully well that education is a dynamic lifelong learning process. After all, we have the enormous responsibility of molding the lives of all the children entrusted in our charge and care. In the school year 2001-02 ie the last academic year, students did well in cricket, winning the Jakarta Cricket Association Inter-school tournament once again. Many children participated in acts of charity, visiting old age homes, donating money, clothes, bags, a variety of stationeries, etc… Dramatics, performing arts, and painting flourished in the school. Students had fun and joy in programs like ‘Look Alike’, ‘Bee in my bonnet’, ‘Cheerleading’, ‘Fun Fair’, ‘Halloween’, ‘Aerobics’, ‘Choral singing, painting and drawing, ice skating, bowling, playing basketball, etc. The GMIS Jakarta, a dynamic learning community, propagates lifelong learning and responsible citizenship through a challenging, multidisciplinary, internationally transferable curriculum fulfilling the diverse needs of students. The school provides an atmosphere where diversity is considered a strength and where differences are seen as assets. We believe that students must value and respect the culture and traditions of the host country, Indonesia. The school aims to develop self-confidence in each student to teach adaptability and problem-solving skills to face changes which are vital elements of emerging globalism and to develop good personal traits which include a strong work ethic, self-discipline, sportsmanship, and self-esteem.
  3. Our nation's beloved 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was a native of neighboring Kentucky. But you might not know that he envisioned "a great university for the people of this area" here in the Cumberland Gap. One hundred forty years later, Lincoln Memorial University is the heir of that vision, and we are very proud to wear his name and embrace his legacy. Nestled in the pristine Appalachian Mountain range, LMU's main campus in Harrogate, Tennessee, is scenic and historic. About 55 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee, we are perfectly poised to offer a liberal arts education. A main campus full of activities for residential students and 11 extended sites in surrounding areas, LMU provides educational experiences to suit your life. With over 30 academic majors ranging from accounting to wildlife and fisheries biology, success is within your reach. Most important, LMU is a close-knit community filled with people who care. Students can expect personal attention with an average class size of 14. At LMU, students build relationships that last, and they learn lessons they will carry for life. Lincoln Memorial University is a comprehensive values-based learning community dedicated to providing quality educational experiences at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. The University strives to give students a foundation for a more productive life by upholding the principles of Abraham Lincoln's life: a dedication to individual liberty, responsibility, and improve respect for citizenship, recognition of the intrinsic value of high moral and ethical standards, and a belief in a personal God. While primarily committed to teaching, the University supports research and service. The University's curriculum and commitment to quality instruction at every level are based on the beliefs that graduates must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in an era of rapidly and continuously expanding communication technology, must have an appreciable depth of learning in a field of knowledge, must appreciate and understand the various ways by which we come to know ourselves and the world around us, and must be able to exercise informed judgments. Applying to college should not be a chore. We have gathered all the information we think you will need and put it right here at your fingertips. It is easy. Let us get started. First, you should know that Lincoln Memorial University offers relevant and diverse curricula that can be tailored to your individual goals and personal growth. You will be challenged by faculty and fellow students, and as a result, you will expand your horizons and viewpoints. Lincoln Memorial University offers a quality education at an affordable price. Nearly 90 percent of LMU undergraduate students receive some financial assistance through a combination of scholarships and need-based financial aid. For many students, the individual cost to attend LMU is less than the cost associated with state schools. We are committed to providing financial assistance to every eligible student. Financial aid programs are designed to meet the difference between the family's expected contribution and the cost of attending LMU. The specific type of financial aid awarded to a student depends on the individual's demonstrated financial need and academic qualifications. The University believes that one of the major cornerstones of meaningful existence is service to humanity. By making educational, service, and research opportunities available to students, Lincoln Memorial University seeks to improve life for the students it serves. While serving students from throughout the state, nation, and many other countries, the University retains a commitment to enrich people and communities' lives in the Appalachian region. LMU offers a relevant curriculum for the 21st century in business, humanities, arts and sciences, education, and health professions. The quality liberal arts and sciences programs offer students a broad preparation for selected majors and programs of professional study. Numerous academic majors give students an array of undergraduate options. Multiply these academic options by LMU's extended learning sites, online courses, and interactive television classrooms, and you get an exceptional opportunity for study. Students may enroll at ten conveniently accessible LMU locations in eastern Kentucky and east Tennessee. An expanding catalog of site-based, online and interactive television courses and programs supported by caring faculty permit students to study and complete their degree at various regional locations...or from anywhere in the world. Lincoln Memorial University offers students a multitude of academic resources, allowing students from all backgrounds to experience a wide range of opportunities. Our goal at LMU is to help each student have the total university experience and access all the possible resources needed for social, personal, and academic development and success. We are your first stop for all things career-related. We provide career counseling, career exploration classes, interest and personality assessments, and resources to help you choose a major and career. If you are seeking employment, we can direct you to resources to identify part-time jobs and available full-time positions. We also help with resume construction, cover letters, and interview prep. We can assist with your questions about graduate school and regularly have career fairs and other opportunities to connect you directly to graduate programs and employers.

  13. San Joaquin Memorial High School is a private Catholic high school located in Fresno, California, in the heart of San Joaquin Valley. With a current enrollment of 500+ students, we are proud to offer students both a diverse and challenging curriculum designed to provide a thorough education rooted in the Catholic faith. Our teachers and staff inspire students to achieve academic excellence and profound spiritual growth by embedding the Catholic faith's values and practices. San Joaquin Memorial High School is a Catholic, co-educational college preparatory high school owned and operated by the Diocese of Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley heart. Founded under the inspiring leadership of the late Most Reverend Philip G. Scher, our school has the distinction of being the first Diocesan Catholic High School in the Monterey-Fresno Diocese. San Joaquin Memorial was named to honor those men and women from the San Joaquin Valley who gave their lives in our country's service during World War II. Classes started in the fall of 1945, just as construction was completed on the first three buildings. Construction of the fourth and fifth buildings was completed a short time later, with classes open the following year. San Joaquin Memorial High School was then operated by the Sisters of the Holy Cross and the Brothers of the Christian Schools, with both orders sharing the governance for more than 40 years. Striving to reflect the image of God and inspire the formation of our students, we provide a rigorous, Catholic, college-preparatory environment within and beyond the classroom, guiding a diverse student body to lead and serve the community in imitation of Jesus. San Joaquin Memorial High School is the school of choice for students and families seeking a rigorous college-preparatory education within a Catholic, culturally diverse, and enriching environment. Hallmarks of a San Joaquin Memorial High School education include integrating state-of-the-art technology within the teaching/learning process, comprehensive community service-learning programs, and a wide array of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities designed to ensure that the gifts and talents of each student are recognized and maximized.
  14. Judge Memorial provides an exceptional college preparatory, secondary, academic education within a diverse, Christian atmosphere. Our teachers, administrators, staff, families, and students have established a school of distinction in all pursuits: academic, athletic, creative, service, and spiritual. We provide this in an environment based on excellence, tradition, service, and faith. At Judge Memorial, Christian values and academic excellence go hand in hand. Judge Memorial is well-known for its commitment to academic excellence, character building, sportsmanship, and producing graduates prepared and ready to contribute to society. Students learn the value of hard work, generosity toward others, and respect. A successful student is well-rounded in academics and is also an active participant in the school's life through involvement in activities, athletics, and service. Judge Memorial is recognized and respected for encouraging students of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds to reach their full potential to prepare for university education rigors to participate in community service and, ultimately, to return a full measure of value and character to society. The importance of Catholic Schools is needed now more than ever. Judge Memorial Catholic High School is that bastion of hope for our next generation of leaders. By focusing on the cura personalis, or "care for the whole person," we challenge our students to lead with their hearts along with their minds. The development of a child's conscience is as important as the development of their academic skills. This is accomplished through a continued partnership with parents to strengthen each child to their full potential. Why do we do this? We do this because our children are worth it! They are worth the long hours. They are worth the emotional investment. They are worth the opening of our hearts. An excellent former high school literature teacher stated, "You must not teach just content, but the values and customs of life. …There are three things that you must transmit: how to love, how to understand which values and customs create harmony in society. ...Teachers must aim to build an educational relationship with each student, who must feel welcomed and loved for what he or she is with all of their limitations and potential." That former high school teacher now goes by the name of Pope Francis. May his words and actions continue to inspire each one of us. Judge Memorial Catholic High School's mission is to create a community through faith and education that will foster the development of each student's inherent gifts. As a community based on faith, Judge Memorial Catholic High School partners with parents to foster the integration of student's spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. In our safe, caring, respectful environment, students are empowered to become builders of a more just society. Judge Memorial Catholic High School's curriculum is college preparatory and includes accelerated programs consisting of Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Theology, English, fine arts, mathematics, science, social students, and world languages form the core. The academic departments offer an extensive array of curricular options and levels appropriate for each learner. The wide variety of courses emphasizes critical thinking, communication, and technology integration with content that prompts analysis, examination, writing, and discussion. Our curriculum and instructional practices are reviewed regularly to ensure that what we provide to our students is the best in the Intermountain West, the United States, and worldwide. We are committed to providing academic opportunities that are rigorous and relevant to help our students achieve their dreams. We know that expectations are high in everything at Judge –activities, athletics, the arts – but perhaps nowhere more so than academics. Judge Memorial fosters each individual's excellence. We celebrate the fact that everyone learns differently, and we work with each student to identify and cultivate specific interests and goals in a challenging and stimulating educational environment. As a school community, we are united in making sure all our students are challenged and supported. The Judge faculty works with students to develop logic, creativity, communication, and a strong work ethic through coursework, class interaction, and co-curricular activities. Instructors at Judge Memorial believe that learning requires a disciplined atmosphere that fosters personal freedom and responsibility for one's decisions. Our faculty and staff appreciate the commitment and sacrifice parents make to give students the gift of a Catholic education… a Judge education. As a school community, we take that trust very seriously.
