About Me

  1. Bass Memorial Academy is a Seventh-day Adventist boarding high school owned and operated by the Gulf States Conference. We are dedicated to training young people according to the principles found in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy. It is our primary objective to encourage young people to develop a love for Jesus Christ and dedicate themselves to live for Him. We are a Seventh-day Adventist boarding high school owned and operated by the Gulf States Conference. Our primary objective is to intentionally provide an environment for students to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ while providing an excellent and unique secondary education. We are located in the heart of the Mississippi Pine Belt between Purvis and Lumberton, Mississippi, which is one half-hour south of Hattiesburg and one and one half-hours north of New Orleans. BMA primarily serves students in Southern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Northern Florida however, students from Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and beyond also attend. The Gulf States Conference of Seventh-day Adventists operates the school, which opened in 1961 on more than 300 acres of land donated by I. H. Bass, founder of Bass Pecan Company. The main campus is situated in the middle of an old pecan orchard where the friendly southern students grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. BMA is accredited by the Accrediting Association of Seventh-day Adventist Schools, Colleges, and Universities as well as the Middle States Association. Bass Memorial Academy was founded on the principle of training young people to work for the Lord. Young people have left our campus and taken up every kind of work imaginable. Our utmost goal for our graduates is for them to use the skills gained here to be of valuable service to God and man. God has purposed to raise an army of “Youth, Rightly Trained” to take the message of Jesus and His soon coming to a dying world. We desire that each of our students will join that army. There are many opinions today about how this “training” should be done. Our staff is seeking the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy to establish principles of training upon which to form our program. Through prayer and much discussion, we have established seven objectives chosen to be the foundation of our mission. They are as follows: Trust in Jesus Christ Respect for our body Academic excellence Industrious work ethic Noble character Evangelism and service Dedicated members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church It is now our goal to make sure our program is balanced and aligned with these objectives. This is an ongoing process that will end only when Jesus returns. We hope that you will be able to see these objectives woven through the fabric of our school. View full school

  3. Gorchakov Memorial School was conceived as and strives to be, a contemporary rendering of the Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum. The selection of this model is significant. The Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum was established in Russia as a response to the needs of its time, during which there were strong beliefs in the possibility of societal transformation. For one hundred years the Lyceum prepared numerous, highly educated leaders in the spheres of culture, government, and the military, who played important roles in Russian history. The well-known events of the Revolution, however, interrupted the work of the Lyceum. Only now, about one hundred years later, has the revival of the Lyceum's traditions become possible. We hope the graduates of Gorchakov will carry these traditions forward. We regard education as one of the most important aspects of a child's education and rearing and admit only those children from families which share this belief and have high expectations for their children's education. The mission of Gorchakov Memorial School is to create a paradigm for the formation of private educational institutions which aim to positively influence Russian society. The objective of Gorchakov Memorial School is to prove that educational institutions, comparable to the Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum, can be established in Russia today through the combined efforts of concerned, ambitious individuals and socially responsible businesses. Gorchakov Memorial School views education as a vital component of purposeful societal development. Gorchakov adheres to all the state educational requirements and, at the same time, builds upon the best innovations from both the Russian and foreign educational experience. Students at Gorchakov are given every opportunity to develop their creative faculties. Offerings toward this purpose include a rigorous core curriculum, extra-curricular clubs and projects, intellectual games and activities, educational trips throughout Russia and abroad, local cultural excursions, participation in academic competitions, public events hosted by the School and other organizations, etc. A teacher in the School is a pedagogue by vocation. Every participant in the project of Gorchakov considers themselves a member of the School's team and feels a responsibility for everything that occurs in the school. All the teachers at Gorchakov are committed to its principles, summarized in the memorandum. The School values its relationship with the parents of its pupils and encourages them to not only participate in discussions but to actively be involved with and contribute to the educational policies of the School. Gorchakov is open to anyone ready to make an intellectual, emotional, and material investment. The ultimate guiding principle of Gorchakov is the success of its students. To carry out the educational process in a way that guarantees that students meet the requirements of the National educational standards. To revive the educational experience of The Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum aimed at shaping and developing students' intellectual, moral, and civil values. To create the framework to foster the development of individual talents of each student. To provide the framework for the students' gradual development from functional literacy through to cultural competence. To shape, maintain and develop pupils' interest in learning foreign languages. To provide opportunities for the students' pre-professional development in high school. To create the necessary conditions to ensure the students' health and personal safety and to provide the students with the knowledge and skills necessary to live a secure life in the future. 5. An academic year in a multicultural international school is full of challenges and achievements of a different kind. I make this statement taking into consideration our heterogeneous student body from over 40 countries who study, play, and pray together under a common umbrella. GMIS is a non-denominational institution and we strive continuously to maintain this order. A spirit of camaraderie, cooperation, and friendliness prevail in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, gym, school buses, playfields, and the school campus. Throughout the school year, students are actively involved in a dynamic curriculum, which encompasses creative thinking, inquiry, originality in writing, and proactive discussions with teachers who through their teamwork and dedication motivate and encourage even the weak students to do well in the study, sports, and multidimensional activities. A sense of satisfaction, happiness, and achievement is felt by all of us when we see our students developing, learning, and attaining high goals. We also emphasize cultivating emotional intelligence, a spirit of charity, and empathy in all our students. Our pupils are constantly made aware of all that is taking place in the world so that they can develop into responsible citizens and become the guardians of the environment of our planet earth. Parents have been cooperative and followed the guidelines of the school and we too readily heard their views and incorporated them into the day-to-day running of the school. After all, GMIS is a big family which works on mutual support where the students are cheerful and hardworking. Our students are full of enthusiasm and joy. They like to come to school and meet the multifarious challenges posed to them by the teachers. The teachers also instill the values of creative thinking, reading good books, confidence-building and respecting others' values and beliefs, and developing a spirit of tolerance. Two thousand years ago, Socrates had said that education is the eliciting of knowledge and creative thinking from the mind. We at GMIS truly believe in this philosophy linked with International Baccalaureate PYP, MYP, and Diploma programs which also focus on original thinking, human values, concern for fellow beings and our planet earth. We do not believe in complacency, knowing fully well that education is a dynamic lifelong learning process. After all, we have the enormous responsibility of molding the lives of all the children entrusted in our charge and care. In the school year 2001-02 ie the last academic year, students did well in cricket, winning the Jakarta Cricket Association Inter-school tournament once again. Many children participated in acts of charity, visiting old age homes, donating money, clothes, bags, a variety of stationeries, etc… Dramatics, performing arts, and painting flourished in the school. Students had fun and joy in programs like ‘Look Alike’, ‘Bee in my bonnet’, ‘Cheerleading’, ‘Fun Fair’, ‘Halloween’, ‘Aerobics’, ‘Choral singing, painting and drawing, ice skating, bowling, playing basketball, etc. The GMIS Jakarta, a dynamic learning community, propagates lifelong learning and responsible citizenship through a challenging, multidisciplinary, internationally transferable curriculum fulfilling the diverse needs of students. The school provides an atmosphere where diversity is considered a strength and where differences are seen as assets. We believe that students must value and respect the culture and traditions of the host country, Indonesia. The school aims to develop self-confidence in each student to teach adaptability and problem-solving skills to face changes which are vital elements of emerging globalism and to develop good personal traits which include a strong work ethic, self-discipline, sportsmanship, and self-esteem. 7. These were drawn up in consultation with pupils, parents, and governors. ‘From little acorns, mighty oaks grow…’ Our vision is: We aim to create a happy, caring environment where everyone develops self-esteem and self-discipline - and feels valued, confident, and motivated in all aspects of school life. We aim: To build an ethos marked by a welcoming, friendly, bright, lively, happy place where all learners feel secure. A place where good behavior is expected and where learners enjoy their learning journey. To make this school a place of enjoyment where success is celebrated. To ensure each child feels valued for their contributions and develops a positive attitude towards everyone in the life of the school and community. To be an inclusive school and to put into place strategies, in all aspects of our work, that ensure all learners are given equality of opportunity and treated fairly. To ensure every child develops an understanding of citizenship and their role in the community. Each child develops high self-esteem, confidence, and a true feeling of self-worth and develops a sense of responsibility. To ensure each child acquires a set of moral values and attitudes including honesty, respect, sincerity, trust, and personal responsibility. To enable children to develop an understanding and mutual respect of other religions, races, cultures, gender, people with disabilities, and associated points of view. To enliven and enrich a broad and balanced curriculum by visits, extracurricular activities, visitors, use of the environment. Each child will be given equal opportunities to participate in all aspects of school life. We aim to be an inclusive school and to put into place strategies, in all aspects of our work, which ensure all learners are given equality of opportunity and treated fairly. To promote and achieve high standards for all by providing teaching and learning of the highest quality. To provide well for learners’ physical, mental, social, spiritual, moral, and cultural needs and to provide well for learners’ care, health, and safety. To encourage every child to develop a lively, enquiring mind and life skills so that he/she will have the ability to experiment, investigate, take risks, challenge, discriminate and make informed choices whilst at school and in their later life. To give the children opportunities to make connections between subjects and to apply key skills across the curriculum. To begin to develop the Welsh Language from the Early Years and promote a Welsh ethos within the school. To break down any barriers children may face from disadvantage or poverty.
