  1. Ark Evelyn Grace Academy is a mixed, non-selective, 11-18 secondary school, at the heart of our community. We intend for Evelyn Grace to be the school of choice in the local community, whose reputation is centered on great teaching, exemplary behavior, and unrivaled opportunities beyond the classroom. Our commitment is that we will work tirelessly in teaching, guiding, and supporting all our students, so that they may go on to secure a place at a good university and ultimately compete for the very best positions in their chosen career. Excellence is only achievable through self-discipline and endeavor and these things combined enable each student to SEE the light illuminating their futures. At Evelyn Grace Academy, we believe that there is no substitute for hard work and this, above all else, will help our students understand and achieve excellence. Both teachers and students at Evelyn Grace never believe they have ‘arrived’ and are always seeking to improve and advance. As a member of our community of learners, our students are given regular and precise feedback so that they can develop and progress. We will help each student gain a firm knowledge and understanding so that the passion for their subjects grows and matches that of their teachers. We are also driven to stretch and challenge all our students to become better people so that they can make a positive contribution to the academy and the wider community. We want our students to leave this academy, having become both cleverer and kinder people. To achieve this, we give them a consistent diet of great teaching, along with a broad range of opportunities for leadership, responsibility, and personal development both in and out of the classroom. At Ark Evelyn Grace Academy, we take special pride in our curriculum. Our priority is to build a foundation in literacy and numeracy, as this provides a gateway to all other learning. Students should be able to read, write and work with numbers fluently and confidently. Our curriculum focuses heavily on building these foundations. Our aim at Evelyn Grace Academy is to develop all of our students so that they can lead successful lives, access their preferred university or career, and become the leaders of tomorrow in every walk of life. As a school, we are dedicated to providing a range of opportunities that enable all of our students to flourish. Part of our role in preparing students at Evelyn Grace Academy for adult life in modern Britain is ensuring that we promote and reinforce British values to our students.
  2. This is a Board directive, which we must adhere to. MECS began as a dream in the mid-1950s! Christian parents dreamed of education with a Christian perspective for their children – and grandchildren. In the 1960s, they organized themselves and were very active in raising funds. In 1964, the pioneers formed their Association of Parents for Christian Education, Mount Evelyn, and accelerated the pace of work to establish a Christian school. With daring and vision in 1970, they purchased our wonderful six-hectare school property. Their dreams were realized when they opened Mount Evelyn, Christian Primary School on the 3rd of February 1973 – a full 19 years after the very first fundraising effort. The school opened with three teachers teaching 80 children in Years Foundation to 6 in three composite groups. We have two main motives for operating as a Christian school. The first is that we believe that Jesus Christ is to be Lord over every single part of life, including the education of our children. The second is that God has given parents, the responsibility of nurturing their children. Their education is a major part of that. MECS sees its primary task as unfolding God’s world with children in the educational domain (families and church also do this but in other domains of life). This involves students understanding that they are God’s creative handiwork, unique, precious, and loved, made in God’s image, and gifted in many ways. They also learn how to work and play within the world, and what God asks of them. As students understand themselves, their world, and have a healthy view of the calling God has for them, they are well equipped and positioned to engage as active participants in society and as disciples of the Lord. Such a holistic understanding stands in stark contrast to the broad Australian view that schools exist to provide students with basic skills and the where-with-all to get a good job at the end of the process. One is a view of God’s kingdom and the call to serve, the other, the material world in which one needs to work. Two very different views about education.
