About Me

  1. Carolina Friends School is a vibrant and inclusive learning community empowering students to think critically, creatively, and independently. We foster active exploration and quiet reflection, individual endeavor, and collaborative engagement. Inspired by Quaker values — the pursuit of truth, respect for all, peaceful resolution of conflict, simplicity, the call to service — we teach our children that it is possible to change the world. At Carolina Friends School, "we teach our students that it is possible to change the world." Even the youngest children learn that they have capacity and agency. Their thoughts and actions matter. By harnessing their imagination, developing their skills, and working intentionally and diligently, they learn that they can improve their lives and the lives of others. Whether it be collecting for area families affected by food insecurity, exchanging ideas and working with migrant workers in North Carolina, advocating for legislation in Raleigh and Washington, D.C., organizing student diversity leadership conferences, supporting schools in Topchi, Afghanistan, or designing agricultural tools from upcycled materials as part of a permaculture class to advance environmental sustainability efforts on campus, CFS students embrace the audacious challenge and optimism of our mission statement to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Bold visioning and decisive action have been at the heart of Carolina Friends School since its inception. From our founding in 1962 as the first integrated school in the state, we have embraced all kinds of diversity, understanding that inclusive classrooms produce better outcomes for all children. Most importantly, the school has always been guided by what is best for children. Today the school thrives on a beautiful, wooded 126-acre campus and two satellite Early School campuses that excite students' imaginations, creates space for children to showcase their existing passions and discover new ones, teaches the skills necessary to thrive in a future that has not yet come to be, and nurtures the soul. Guided by the Quaker values of simplicity, peace, equality, and truth, the CFS staff are dynamic and talented educators who are passionate about their work and forge lasting relationships with students as learning partners. We are an independent Quaker school, which means that we are secular, inclusive, and powerfully guided by Quaker values. We retain close relationships with the Durham and Chapel Hill Friends Meetings (with at least eight members serving on our Board of Trustees at any time), and we hold membership in the Friends Council on Education (FCE). Most students, parents, and teachers at CFS are not Quaker. They follow varied religious traditions or none at all, but our identity as a Friends School is central to who we are. Quakers believe in each individual's ability to become their best self, the power of community, and the importance of acting for the greater good. The Religious Society of Friends began in mid-seventeenth-century England as a Christian group focused on the "Inner Light" of each individual, empowering direct personal spiritual experience without creeds, doctrine, or clergy. While there are no set beliefs in Quakerism, you will often see a collaborative group of goals, called testimonies: simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship (SPICES). These testimonies are threads in Quaker query and practice's larger organic life: to ask essential questions to discern what actions are motivated by those questions. This requires reflection, mindfulness, and a balancing of the inner self and outer world. At Carolina Friends, learning is dynamic, experiential, and interactive. Students encounter open-ended questions, undertake original projects of real relevance, explore the natural world, and immerse themselves in service-learning. In doing so, they build impressive powers of critical, creative, and independent thinking and expression. It is an exceptional education shaped by a clear set of beliefs: a commitment to Quaker values, a love of children, and a sense of hope for the communities, local and global, they will soon lead and serve. It is learning with a purpose, it is learning in nature, it is learning in the territory of ideas, it is learning in a relationship, it is learning that is global and experiential, it is learning that is empowered, it is learning with a sense of high and hopeful expectation.

Columbia College was founded in 1854 as Columbia Female College by the Methodist Conference of South Columbia. The College, located on Plain Street, now Hampton, in Columbia, SC, opened to students in October 1859. In 1865 during the height of the Civil War, the College closed as General Sherman's troops approached Columbia but reopened in 1873. In 1904, the College dropped "Female" from its name and moved to Eau Claire after benefactors Frederick H. Hyatt and Col. John T. Sloan donated land. In 1964, the campus survived a fire that destroyed the Old Main classroom building and the East Wing Dormitory. What remained of the columns became a symbol for the College and has since been incorporated into the logo. Columbia College serves as an institution for higher education with approximately 1,200 male and female students in both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Recent projects have included cleaning up flood-damaged homes in a hurricane-hit city, establishing a program to help girls in Honduras escape poverty, and delivering health care and comfort to residents of a nursing home, orphanage, and cancer ward in Nicaragua. Computers used to be devices mastered only by people who knew computer-programming languages. However, today's mobile devices are computers we use with ease and find it hard to live without. The people who led this revolution of making computers user-friendly solved the problem of making the power of computers accessible to everybody. Whether you are studying science, interior design, or another discipline, expect to learn and practice creative problem-solving at A.U. As a student here, you'll receive state-of-the-art instruction through courses specially designed to use mobile devices' power, courses that encourage your creative thinking. You can work at our center for cancer research, through which recent students are studying plant extracts they harvested from the Amazon jungle—interested in entrepreneurship? The Palmetto State established South Carolina College — the precursor to the University of South Carolina — on Dec. 19, 1801, as part of an effort to unite South Carolinians in the wake of the American Revolution. South Carolina’s leaders saw the new college to promote “the good order and harmony” of the state. The founding of South Carolina College was also a part of the Southern public college movement spurred by Thomas Jefferson. Within 20 years of one another, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia established state-supported colleges. In the antebellum era, the Palmetto State generously supported South Carolina College. The institution featured a cosmopolitan faculty, including such noted European scholars as Francis Lieber and Thomas Cooper and renowned American scholars John and Joseph LeConte. Offering a traditional classical curriculum, South Carolina College became one of the most influential colleges in the South before 1861, earning a reputation as the training ground for South Carolina’s antebellum elite.

Through a commitment to ongoing volunteerism, internships with local nonprofits, grant projects with community partners, and customized curricula, Levine Scholars graduate fully prepared to begin their next chapter as versatile intellects, thoughtful leaders, and compassionate humanitarians. Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and his Cabinet set the course for the University and preside over day-to-day operations. He is supported in his efforts by a 13-member Board of Trustees comprised of civic and business leaders and individuals with extensive experience in education. Rounding out our prestigious leadership team is the Student Body president, who serves as an ex-officio member, presenting our students' point-of-view. UNC Charlotte is one of a generation of universities founded in metropolitan areas of the United States immediately after World War II in response to rising education demands generated by the war and its technology. To serve returning veterans, North Carolina opened 14 evening college centers in communities across the state. The Charlotte Center opened Sept. 23, 1946, offering evening classes to 278 newcomers and sophomore students in Charlotte's Central High School facilities. After three years, the state closed the centers, declaring that on-campus facilities were sufficient to meet the needs of returning veterans and recent high school graduates. Charlotte's education and business leaders, long aware of the area's unmet needs for higher education, moved to have the Charlotte Center taken over by the city school district and operated as Charlotte College, offering the first two years college courses. Later the same leaders asked Charlotte voters to approve a two-cent tax to support that college. Charlotte College drew students from the city, Mecklenburg County, and a dozen surrounding counties. The two-cent tax was later extended to all of Mecklenburg County. Ultimately financial support for the college became a responsibility of the State of North Carolina. As soon as Charlotte College was firmly established, efforts were launched to give it a campus of its own. With the backing of Charlotte business leaders and legislators from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties, the land was acquired on the northern fringe of the city, and bonds were passed to finance new facilities. In 1961, Charlotte College moved its growing student body into two new buildings to become a 1,000-acre campus 10 miles from downtown Charlotte. Three years later, the North Carolina legislature approved bills making Charlotte College a four-year, state-supported college. The next year, 1965, the legislature approved bills creating the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the fourth campus of the statewide university system. In 1969, UNC Charlotte began offering programs leading to master's degrees. In 1992, it was authorized to offer programs leading to doctoral degrees. Now a research-intensive university, UNC Charlotte is the third largest of the 16 institutions within the University of North Carolina and Charlotte region's most comprehensive public institution. The University comprises seven professional colleges and offers 18 doctoral programs, 62 master's degree programs, and 90 degrees. More than 1,000 full-time faculty include the University's academic departments, and the 2017 fall enrollment exceeded 29,000 students. UNC Charlotte boasts more than 120,000 living alumni and adds roughly 4,000 to 4,500 new alumni each year.

State shares the historic mission of our nation's land-grant universities to provide education, research, and outreach services to benefit our state, nation, and the larger world if you are a scientist, researcher, entrepreneur/small businessperson, farmer, economic developer, non-profit representative, educator or only a concerned citizen. Founded in 1896 as the state's sole public college for black youth, SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY has played a crucial role in educating African-Americans in the state and nation. As a land-grant institution, it struggled to provide agricultural and mechanical training to generations of black youngsters. Its extension program sent farm and home demonstration agents into rural counties to provide knowledge and information to impoverished black farm families. The University has educated scores of teachers for the public schools. It provided education in sciences, literature, and history. The support of the Rosenwald Fund and the General Education Board helped the institution survive the Depression. After World War II, the state legislature created a graduate program and a law school at SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY to prevent black students from enrolling in the University of South Carolina's graduate and legal education programs. The legislature also dramatically increased funding at the college to make "separate but equal" a reality in higher education in South Carolina. During the 1950s and 1960s, hundreds of S.C. STATE students participated in local civil rights demonstrations and were arrested. In 1968 three young men were slain and 27 wounded on the campus by state highway patrolmen in the Orangeburg Massacre. Since 1966, S.C. STATE has been open to white students and faculty, but it has mostly retained its mission and character as a historically black institution. In 1971, the agricultural program was terminated, and the college farm was transformed into a community recreation center consisting of a golf course and soccer and baseball fields. Today nearly 5000 students are majoring in a wide range of programs that include agribusiness, accounting, art, English, and drama and fashion merchandising, physics, psychology, and political science.
  7. Originally named the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race, NCCU was founded by Dr. James E. Shepard, a pharmacist, and religious educator. The institution was chartered in 1909 and opened its doors to students in 1910. In the following years, the school’s name became the National Training School in 1915, Durham State Normal School in 1923, North Carolina College for Negroes in 1925 (when it became the nation’s first state-supported liberal arts college for African-American students), North Carolina College at Durham in 1947, and finally North Carolina Central University in 1969. NCCU has been a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System since 1972.
  8. From our roots as an 1890 land-grant university, we have expanded and adapted to become a school fit for the 21st century and beyond. N.C. Our curriculum includes nanoengineering, and our idea of public service encompasses not only Greensboro but the world. We believe in our students' power to solve problems, both local and global, through technology, business, engineering, the arts, and other endeavors. Through exemplary instruction and interdisciplinary studies, we believe that through scholarly and creative research, and courage and community service, N.C. A&T prepares students to enhance the quality of life for themselves, the citizens of North Carolina, the nation, and the world.
  9. On May 14, 1956, the North Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church met in Goldsboro. It approved a petition from the people of Rocky Mount to locate a college in their community. In early September, the first trustees established temporary headquarters in the Ricks Hotel. One of the first actions of the Board was to name the institution North Carolina Wesleyan College. The State of North Carolina officially chartered the College on October 25, 1956. Capital investments totaling approximately $2 million made possible the construction of the main buildings on the 200-acre site donated by the M.C. Braswell heirs of Rocky Mount. Four years later, 92 students enrolled in the first class at North Carolina Wesleyan College. In 1964, 33 students received their degrees at the College’s first Commencement. Since those early days, nearly 9,000 students have earned bachelor’s degrees in the arts and sciences. Alumni from Rocky Mount, neighboring communities, numerous states, and several foreign countries affirm Wesleyan’s value as an essential resource for higher education in Eastern North Carolina.

Founded in 1801, then-South Carolina College flourished pre-Civil War, overcame postwar struggles, was rechartered in 1906 as a university, and transformed itself as a national institution in the 20th 21st centuries. The Palmetto State established South Carolina College — the precursor to the University of South Carolina — on Dec. 19, 1801, as part of an effort to unite South Carolinians in the wake of the American Revolution. South Carolina's leaders saw the new college to promote "the good order and harmony" of the state. Offering a traditional classical curriculum, South Carolina College became one of the most influential colleges in the South before 1861, earning a reputation as the training ground for South Carolina's antebellum elite. In the 1980s and 1990s, the University continued to develop its resources to serve the Palmetto State better. A concerted drive to achieve national recognition brought Carolina into the 21st century. In 2001, the University of South Carolina celebrated a legacy of 200 years of educating leaders for the future of South Carolina, the nation, and the world. The Carnegie Foundation has designated the University of South Carolina as an institution of very high research activity, its highest rating. Currently, there are more than 25 countries represented at USC Aiken. This enriches our campus by adding unique social, personal, and academic experiences for all of our students. Building partnerships has been the cornerstone of the University of South Carolina Aiken since its inception in 1961. It was then that the Aiken community citizens voiced the need for a local institution of higher education. In a real demonstration of grassroots politics, the community rallied to show their support for a college founded in the area. A governing board was formed through state legislation, the Aiken County Commission for Higher Education, which continues to oversee the University's mission. The University of South Carolina, the state's flagship university founded in Columbia in 1801, began offering courses in Aiken for students interested in completing their degrees in Columbia. USC Aiken became the fourth campus founded of the eight that would eventually comprise the USC System. Three full-time faculty members, a secretary, and 139 students joined for the University's first academic semester in September 1961. Classes took place in "Banksia", a former winter-colony mansion in downtown Aiken. For 11 years, the University's first students attended college in a structure developed as living quarters, studying composition in an area that was once a ballroom and algebra in a former sitting room. Over the years, the student population grew, and the need for a new physical location for campus arose. The University purchased the Graniteville Company's property and moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972. One multipurpose building was constructed, which was later named the Robert E. Penland Administration Building. This building's open courtyard features one of the campus' most notable landmarks, the Double Knot sculpture by artist Charles Perry, which symbolizes the University's close ties with the local community. At the time, most assumed that this would be the only building ever needed for the campus; however, the University grew to occupy more than 20 buildings and athletics facilities in the years that followed. The institution began forming a limited number of sports teams as part of the NAIA in the 1960s. USC Aiken student-athletes adopted the Pacers as their mascot, named Aiken's well-known status as an equestrian community. In 1990, USC Aiken achieved NCAA Division II status and became a charter member of the highly-competitive Peach Belt Conference. Today, Pacer Athletics hosts 11 varsity men's and women's sports teams, including the three-time national champion men's golf team. Today, USC Aiken has ranked in the top three public baccalaureate colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report's guide "Best Colleges" for twenty-one consecutive years. More than 3,500 students attend the University, and approximately 500 students graduate each year. USC Aiken provides bachelor's and master's degrees in 50 programs of study while delivering many of a large university's offerings on a small, friendly campus with intimate class sizes and personal attention. The commitment to continuing partnerships is woven into the fabric of the campus' culture.

  25. Earning by offering students an intellectually rigorous education builds critical thinking and workforce skills to last a lifetime. Small class size, award-winning faculty, and a nationally acclaimed undergraduate research program foster innovation and recognition. The cornerstone of a liberal arts education is the ability to explore the connections between many different subjects and the options available. So learning here expands well beyond the classroom walls. Focusing on undergraduate studies, we help students dig into learning, whether they participate in faculty-mentored research projects, undertake career-related internships, study abroad, or join service projects to improve the quality of life at home and around the world. We encourage everyone to seek challenges, seize opportunities, and become a doer as well as a thinker. At UNC Asheville, we’ve created an environment for exploring the world and more than 30 different majors. About 3,900 undergraduate students and about 330 full- and part-time faculty bring the campus alive with a genuine hunger to understand and contribute to the human experience. Amid the culturally rich setting of Asheville, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s all designed to spark a lifelong quest to know more — a fire that will grow brighter in the future. UNC Asheville is committed to living the core values of diversity and inclusion, innovation, and sustainability, and ensuring that they permeate everything the university does. Meeting these commitments requires an openness to change, creative and innovative approaches to programmatic growth, and a sustained focus on education, including diverse ideas and sufficient operating resources and support systems, incentives, and accountability measures. We must continue to foster a deep commitment to supporting diverse communities and appropriately encouraging frank and honest conversation. Our commitment leads us to envision a future where all UNC Asheville students, faculty, and staff know they belong regardless of their race and ethnicity, age, religion, disability, socioeconomic status, gender expression, gender, national origin, culture, and ideological beliefs. UNC Asheville’s commitment includes ensuring that our curriculum and programs reflect the diversity of the world and our community, that our education embraces inclusive teaching and learning styles, that ongoing efforts are made to create a multicultural environment throughout the campus that we include diverse perspectives in all conversations concerning the advancement of the university and our society and that our recruitment, hiring and administrative practices place a high value on all aspects of diverse identities. Undergraduate research (UR) is self-directed/designed academic work by an individual student or team of students that addresses a research question with the expectation of a scholarly or creative product intended for publication or presentation on or off-campus. UNC Asheville founded the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 32 years ago and celebrated the milestone by bringing more than 4,000 undergraduate research students to campus in 2016. Undergraduate research offers hands-on experience in the field, guided by expert faculty who let students take the lead. More than 60 percent of UNC Asheville students complete original research in their field of study through the university’s nationally recognized Undergraduate Research Program—an opportunity most often found in graduate programs. Service-learning is an approach to teaching and learning in which students use academic knowledge and skills to address community needs.
