Boasting just 43 students and 10 teachers on its first day of operation, Wentworth College was officially opened on 27th August 2003 by the then Governor-General, Dame Sylvia Cartwright. Springfield Primary School was originally built on Springfield Road in Belfast in 1910. The building is of traditional red-brick design comprising some architectural features typical of that “old Belfast”. It is of excellent condition and has been carefully preserved over the years. It has eight rooms one is used for each of the primaries 1-7 and the other one is used for the playgroup. The inside of the building is bright and attractive with many displays of the children’s work. “Pastoral care is concerned with promoting pupils’ personal and social development and fostering positive attitudes through the quality of teaching and learning through the nature of relationships amongst pupils, teachers and other adults in the school through arrangements for monitoring pupils’ overall progress, academic, personal and social through specific pastoral structures and support systems and extra-curricular activities and the school ethos. The Royal School Dungannon is a co-educational Voluntary Grammar School and Boarding School established by the Royal Charter in 1608. The Royal Charter to establish a free school for boys in County Tyrone was laid down by King James I in 1608. In 1614 the Royal School Dungannon came into being at the village of Mountjoy near Lough Neagh. Sometime later, the school relocated to Dungannon, finally coming to rest at its present site in 1789 with the erection of the building we now know as the ‘Old Grey Mother’ by the Archbishop of Armagh, Richard Robinson, and the then Headmaster, Rev Dr. William Murray. The 1789 building acquired the nickname of the Old Grey Mother after the red sandstone with which it was built was rendered with cement sometime in the 19th Century. New windows and doors were required but the Board of Governors had insufficient funds for sandstone blocks and instead used handmade brick. To preserve a unified appearance, the building was covered with cement. For the generations of boys who lived and learned under its roof that old grey building must have been an object of great affection. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the school grew and new facilities, such as the ball alley, cloisters, and assembly hall, were added. Amalgamation with Dungannon High School for Girls in 1986 and the subsequent refurbishment and new build of 1999-2003 gave us the school we know today. Classrooms are large and well resourced. There are specialist teaching facilities in the Sciences, Design & Technology, Music and Food Technology as well as extensive computer provision, and sporting facilities such as a modern sports hall and multi-gym and a floodlit Astro-turf pitch to complement rugby and hockey pitches and tennis courts. Rockport was founded by Geoffrey Bing, in 1906, as a boys’ preparatory school, and pupils were made ready for the Common Entrance examination to public schools throughout the United Kingdom. Originally with just four boys, one assistant master, and a matron, the school expanded considerably during Bing’s Headship, and concerts, plays, sporting fixtures, and Lough swims flourished. Rockport became a Charitable Trust in 1967, has subsequently had two Headmistresses and three Headmasters, and has grown to be a school of 250 pupils. The school became fully co-educational in 1967 and began taking pupils to the age of 16 in 1998 and the age of 18 in 2015. New buildings and facilities have continued to be added to the Rockport estate, but the school remains very identifiable with the one established by Bing over a century ago. Rockport is a great school with a proud tradition. Idyllically situated on the shores of Belfast Lough and a proud member of Round Square, we have strong values and a sense of adventure.
