- St Mark’s Church School is a co-educational Independent Anglican Diocesan School with children from Preschool to Year 8. Based in Wellington, we teach the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) and St Mark’s is a registered IB World School. St Mark’s Church School was first promoted on the initiative of the Reverend Coffey, Vicar of St Mark’s Church, in the 1880s. With the blessing of the Bishop and the backing of the Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Wellington, the School was established by St Mark’s Parish in 1917. Under the skilled leadership of the first Headmistress, Miss Annie Holm, St Mark’s Church Day School opened its doors to 37 pupils on 11 September 1917 and set out on its mission to provide girls and boys with the very best all-round education. An ambitious but fortuitous plan, and the rest, as they say, is history. St Mark’s has had ten principals who have developed and strengthened the ethos and culture of the school in their unique way. The School has built an enviable reputation for its quality of education, pastoral care, innovation, and excellence. We also boast many talented people, from past and present alumni and friends to staff who have helped this exceptional school evolve. St Mark’s is a modern and forward-looking school of around 300 students where the traditions of the past meet the modern technologies of today. It is a happy place where dedicated, professional teachers encourage our children to do their best in their academic studies and to enjoy everything that is on offer. There is a vibrant and supportive atmosphere here which makes it easy to share challenges. Boys and girls are encouraged to be ambitious in their goals and to work hard to achieve them however, we make sure there is also plenty of time to play and have fun. St Mark’s is proudly co-educational and committed to the value and importance of girls and boys learning and working together as they will in their adult lives. Our children come from many cultural and religious backgrounds, forming a very happy, inclusive, and international student community. We are a World School offering the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate and, as such, we promote international awareness in our young people with emphasis on the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to participate in an increasingly global society. St Mark’s Preschool is an independent, multicultural, and co-educational Preschool located on the grounds of St Mark’s School at the Basin Reserve. Providing an exemplary early childhood education for children in a vibrant, cheerful, and environmentally mindful setting, our Preschool is made up of two spaces: the Preschool and Foundation classrooms, catering for younger and older children and shared open spaces that allow for flexibility and creativity and the ability to respond to different teaching and learning styles. Preschool marks the beginning of your child’s educational journey where they develop their love for learning. At St Mark’s Preschool, we believe that children are agents of their learning. The children are actively engaged in our inquiry and learning program. Children have an active voice, responsibility, and stake in the learning environment. We pride ourselves in providing a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment where each child’s individuality, innate curiosities, and desire to learn are nurtured. We believe that children’s success is achieved through collaboration between Preschool and whanau. We value, and are committed to, building positive relationships and partnerships with parents and caregivers. Whanau is valued as an important part of our community and our aim is that together we can support our tamariki to achieve their fullest potentials. We are delighted you are considering St Mark’s for your International Student, and it would be my pleasure to assist you with all aspects of the enrolment process as well as offering continued support whilst your child is attending our school. St Mark’s is Wellington’s only co-educational Primary School for girls and boys, from Preschool (age 2) to Year 8 (age 13). Educating children since 1917, St Mark’s is an Anglican school with a strong sense of family and community. Having recently celebrated our centenary, St Mark’s successfully blends traditional foundations and modern, forward-thinking educational practice. The International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Programme encourages children to become independent learners. To meet the needs of the fast-paced and ever-changing world that our students will enter, we want our children to have a strong set of problem-solving strategies, the ability to think critically as well as the knowledge and skills to apply to new and unfamiliar tasks. We expect that our students will continue to question throughout their lives and have a strong sense of fairness towards all people. As a result of their learning, we want children to take socially responsible action that has an impact on themselves, their friends, the school, and the community in which they live. View full school

- Vision for a St Cuthbert’s education is to “enable every girl to succeed and thrive – through developing her strengths, expanding her thinking, and building her inner confidence. In St Cuthbert’s, you entrust us to help your daughter grow from child to adult. We consider that an absolute privilege. Together with you, we will prepare her for the world, socially, academically, physically, and emotionally. School believes that Making Girls Amazing reflects the education we offer at St Cuthbert’s and is our commitment to each girl, and to her parents. Girls are at the center of everything we do, and our dedicated teachers ignite our students’ curiosity, creativity, and passion for learning. The school view is that education is a partnership with the school and families. At St Cuthbert’s your daughter will have every opportunity to discover her unique strengths and what she loves doing. Whether she loves art, music, sport, science, dancing, our girls are individuals, and we give each girl the support she needs to grow into a well-rounded young woman. She will do this in an environment where she will make lifelong friends. In one of my first assemblies I suggested to the girls they imagine two flowers growing side by side – each will bloom beautifully when it is ready. Each girl in my care is supported to bloom at her own pace, and we recognize that each girl is different and our job is to find her unique strengths and help these bloom. We notice your daughter and what’s going on in her life, and we find out her unique strengths and talents. At St Cuthbert’s we understand how to teach girls to be successful. Being an independent school gives us the freedom to go beyond the curriculum and teach in the way we know works best for girls. I believe we must challenge the status quo of education. Through gathering evidence, collaborating with other educators and constant innovation, the way our girls engage, inquire and learn is always evolving. Our school motto is over a century old, and the rich values behind ‘By Love Serve’ are at the heart of our school. They underpin all that we do at St Cuthbert’s, and beyond. I’m proud of the way our girls look for ways to embrace our values such as respect, leadership through service to others, and caring for one another. At St Cuthbert’s Junior School, we embrace the responsibility and privilege of helping your daughter develop through these precious, formative years. Your daughter is a unique individual, and the best way to truly grasp how a St Cuthbert’s journey will look for her is to come and visit us. We welcome you to experience our environment first hand, and in the meantime, I would like to share a little about what you can expect from your daughter here. As your daughter enters Senior School it is our job to help prepare her to be capable, caring, and ready to embrace life’s opportunities and challenges. At St Cuthbert’s she will get every encouragement to persevere, the support to discover her unique strengths and passions, and the confidence to reach her full potential. She will be noticed, nurtured, and where needed, supported, or extended. We want to see her leave our care with self-confidence, wonderful memories, lifelong friendships, and the tools to be successful. Right throughout St Cuthbert’s, your daughter is recognized as a unique individual. By genuinely getting to know each one of our girls and paying attention to what’s going on for them, we can provide what they need to feel happy and secure. our daughter’s journey through Senior School is a time of developing character, resilience, and independence. Our girls tell us that one of their most defining experiences is their month-long Kahunui experience. In Year 10 they head to our remote Kahunui Campus in the Bay of Plenty, completely unplugged from all devices. They’re immersed in a very different environment where physical and social experiences give them strategies for life. Your daughter will inherit a very different world from the one we know. Through her time with us, she will become equipped for this world – whatever it looks like. She’ll understand what it means to be a global citizen. She’ll learn self-care practices to manage inevitable life pressures, and she’ll develop the agility and competencies to navigate whatever her future holds. These are some of the most exciting years in a young woman’s life. As head of the Senior School, it is my privilege to be part of your daughter’s journey. I welcome you to come and visit the Senior School and experience for yourself the wonderful discovery I watch every day. St Cuthbert’s students have a reputation for obtaining exceptional academic results. With both National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and International Baccalaureate (IB) qualifications on offer, no matter your daughter’s academic aspirations and interests, our approach to teaching mean that our students gain the tools to become adaptable, forward-thinking, life-long learners. With these essential life skills, our students go on to pursue a wide range of tertiary studies and careers, both nationally and overseas. All girls complete Level 1 NCEA and then choose either to continue on the NCEA pathway at Level 2 or begin the two-year IB Diploma Programme. Both courses give girls the opportunity to gain university entrance in New Zealand and are recognized overseas. View full school

- Manukau Christian School was established in 1987 in Great South Road, Manurewa, with a small core group of students and was known as St Andrew's Christian School. Mr. Ross Thompson, the pastor of the St Andrew's Presbyterian Church at the time, was pivotal in setting up the school. Along with parents who sought to be faithful and obedient to the Lord and who wanted an education for their children that was consistent in all aspects with the Christian faith, our school was born. Our founding principal, Mr. Shane Kennedy was employed from 1992 until 2017. He was a parent member of the school's founding committee in 1987. The school has grown and flourished over the subsequent years. In 2005 we relocated to our new site at Rogers Road and became known as Manukau Christian School. This name reflects our geographical location and the large area that comprises our school community. The school is a private, non-denominational Christian school, originally catering for pupils from Year 1 to Year 8, extending to Year 9 in 2015, Year 10 in 2016, Year 11 in 2017, Year 12 in 2018, and Year 13 in 2019. The school has a strong and well-established reputation for teaching core subjects thoroughly and comprehensively. We focus upon establishing a foundation of learning and knowledge that will enable children to excel later at senior and tertiary schools. We measure our children against international benchmarks assets in the Cambridge Checkpoint system to ensure that our pupils are benefiting from "best practice" educational standards and processes. Manukau Christian School is a private Cambridge International school enrolling primary students in Years 1 to 6, emerging adolescents in Years 7 to 10, and senior students in Years 11 to 13. Parents, when a child starts school, you want them to have the same care, attention, and love they would enjoy at home. You want your child to be the best he or she can be. Our team of dedicated teachers and staff relish the opportunity to help each child to discover their gifts, to nurture them, and to encourage them in their God-given abilities - to be the best they can be! Teaching the Cambridge curriculum from a uniquely biblical worldview sets patterns in place, both spiritually and academically. These patterns and habits form them as people and this sets them up for life. This 6-minute clip Why Ignorance is Not Bliss is a justification for a knowledge-based education system researcher by Briar Lipson. Christian teachers love and care for your children and seek to inspire your child to aspire to live by Christian values. We encourage your child to develop a servant heart: looking outward rather than inward, thereby developing leadership and initiative. We expect the best from your child and we strive to achieve the best for your child as teachers. We endeavor to put Christ at the center of all, by teaching all subject areas through a biblical lens. We aim to assist parents in the education of their children by providing an environment where academic excellence, godly character, and servant leadership are developed by biblical truths and principles. Manukau Christian School is an independent private school, not to be confused with a state-integrated or a state school. Therefore, as a private school, we can implement our Christian curriculum in conjunction with Cambridge Assessment International Education. This gives your child an internationally recognized benchmark at the Primary, Middle, and Senior levels. Cambridge International Examinations have been adopted by an increasing number of secondary schools in New Zealand. The Cambridge curriculum is adapted to our New Zealand context and content. This means that your child will be well equipped to excel at all levels and in particular gain excellent preparation for tertiary education. A leaflet for parents and students explaining the benefits of a Cambridge education is available. Each child is unique and courses are designed to be responsive to each child's individual needs. The individual focus upon each child, however, takes place within the context of a comprehensive integrated curriculum. Each year presupposes and builds upon the knowledge gained in the preceding year. The curriculum is well-structured and focuses on core subjects which provide essential tools for learning across disciplines. We believe that we are responsible to impart a foundation and framework to children that will enable them to keep growing and learning for the rest of their lives. Therefore, we focus particularly upon the core subject areas which are essential to all other learning. The most important core areas of learning are subjects related to language and numbers. Children must start early to build a quality foundation for learning. There is a strong and growing interest for students at senior levels to qualify under the internationally recognized Cambridge International Examination system. To do well at Cambridge exams in later school years, a robust educational and scholastic foundation must be laid in the early years. By harnessing the Cambridge curriculum and by using the Cambridge Checkpoint system at primary levels, we can offer a comprehensive preparatory education for pupils to excel at Cambridge International Examinations. - Queen Margaret College first opened its doors on 19 February 1919 with 53 pupils. Our Scottish Presbyterian founders, The Hon. John Aitken and The Very Rev. Dr. James Gibb had a resolute belief in girls’ education. The College’s original purpose, as stated in its first prospectus, was ‘to provide for girls a sound intellectual and moral education and to build up strong Christian character on a broad religious basis and thus to produce the best type of girlhood and womanhood. The heritage building which the College currently occupies was designed and erected by T.C.Williams and his wife Anne Beetham as a family homestead in Hobson Street, Thorndon. Scots College was housed in the building from 1916 till 1918 when they moved to Miramar and Queen Margaret College was established. The International Baccalaureate is an international qualification for students from Preschool through to Year 13. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is taught in more than 4000 schools worldwide and aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. At the heart of the IB is the “learner profile”, a long-term, holistic vision of education that underpins all three programs and puts the student at the center of everything we do at Queen Margaret College. The learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes. It describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. The New Zealand early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki, is delivered by qualified teachers who know how to extend and challenge students, drawing on their interests and recognizing individual strengths and abilities. The daily timetable allows for play-based inquiry as well as teacher-facilitated group times including regular art, gymnasium, and library sessions. To support Te Whāriki we also deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Pre-School. The PYP curriculum framework supports an inquiry-based approach and aligns well with our national curriculum Te Whāriki. PYP focuses on the holistic growth of the developing child encompassing social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs, in addition to academic development. The program is shaped by the belief that young children are capable learners and are well-positioned to acquire early literacy and numeracy skills and concepts in a stimulating environment. Here you can expect the very best start to education for your child in a well-structured and nurturing setting. Implementation of our daily program is semi-structured and provides an opportunity for children to investigate, explore and extend their strengths and interests. The daily timetable allows for play-based inquiry and teacher-facilitated group times. Group learning supports the development of skills and dispositions for a successful transition into primary school. We also have regular art, gymnasium, and library sessions with specialist staff at Queen Margaret College. Queen Margaret Preschool works with our families to build the foundations of learning before starting school, to help make the right decision for your child’s next steps, and to facilitate the transition process to primary school. Girls entering the Queen Margaret College Junior School will participate in weekly school visits in the new entrant's classroom. The visits provide a smooth transition from Preschool to Junior School ensuring that when your daughter starts, she already has an excellent relationship with her teacher and classmates. For children not continuing at Queen Margaret College, our Preschool staff will help facilitate school visits to their new school and provide any information required. Information evenings about transitioning to primary school are available throughout the year at QMC for parents to attend. “Our Preschool is committed to providing the highest quality education as your child prepares for the transition to primary school and they continue on their lifelong learning journey,” Emily Dominican, Head of Preschool. We are an International Baccalaureate World School authorized to teach the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP emphasizes learning, community service, attitude development, and preparation for participation in an increasingly global society. Building on the skills and knowledge developed through the Primary Years Programme in the Junior School, the program is ideal preparation for the dual qualification pathway offered in the Senior School of either the IB Diploma or NCEA. Students can choose to take different elected subjects, depending on their interests and future goals. We encourage them to think about their education as a whole and transfer their knowledge of one subject to another. We develop learners who have a growth mindset, empowering them to develop their talents through hard work, good strategies, and effective feedback. Students learn how to learn using communication, research, self-management, collaboration, and critical thinking. Developing these skills helps students meet deadlines, concentrate, bounce back, persist, and think positively. In our rapidly changing world, these are fundamental skills for students to prepare for increasingly complex life and work environments. The program can be illustrated by the MYP Curriculum Model which has the IB Learner Profile at the center surrounded by the features of the program, its outcomes, and the curriculum students study. This provides a broad and balanced education for early adolescents. View full school

- In 1988, Marsha Morgan and Pauline Matsis formed Garden Montessori School, the first Montessori Primary School in the South Island. As the school grew, it was registered and known as the Ripple Educational Community and then to Nova Montessori Primary School. By 2002, the school had established two locations – one on Manchester Street and the other on Owles Terrace. Where Nicola Gresson and Phil Gang joined the faculty team. Consolidation of both sites to the present location in 2004 was a major step towards the creation of a full-time Montessori School and the foundation for the Children’s House (3-6). To facilitate that development a new Trust, Nova Montessori Centre (NMC), was established in 2005. The vision began with 3 children, now in 2018, thousands of graduates later, the role reflects the vision of the school and settles at around 80 children. To provide an education founded on Montessori principles. This education process empowers a life-long love of learning, self-discovery, and self- inquiry, and is advanced in an atmosphere of community, both with each other and the natural environment.” Contextualized education enables learners to see the ‘whole to understand the details. It emphasizes the need to integrate the curriculum – from mathematics to language, to history and geography. And to geology, zoology, and botany, now known as Earth Systems Science. Art, music, and drama are integrated into the curriculum as expressions of human creativity. Over the next few years, there will be an additional movement towards creating a more sustainable and ecological school environment. Small things like conversion to eco-friendly cleaning supplies have already been set in place. We appreciate parents sending lunches to schools that do not have throw-away containers. We also appreciate parents' help in our effort to use less paper. Emails, online newsletters, and other e-communications save paper. Nova Montessori is a co-educational and non-denominational school. It offers a multi-age environment where children and teachers form dynamic learning communities. Nova accomplishes this by preparing environments based on the age of the learner so that individuals from birth to maturity can grow and understand themselves and their relationships with each other as well as the natural world. In ‘To Educate the Human Potential, Maria Montessori proclaims “the fundamental principle in education is the correlation of all subjects.” By cosmic education, she refers to an approach to learning that provides the largest possible context for understanding how everything is related. Through this approach, children come to realize humanity’s relationship to the whole. At all levels, Nova teachers emphasize humanity’s responsibility to the Earth community. The Montessori approach to life and learning combines freedom with responsibility, a more active role for the children in their learning, and academic excellence based on each person’s potential contribution. It also provides for social awareness and moral development, as well as a vision of humanity’s relationship to the whole. In a Montessori classroom stimulation for learning comes from the total environment. There is no front of the room and no teacher’s desk as a focal point of attention. Maria Montessori referred to the teacher's desk as a focal point of attention. Maria Montessori referred to the teacher as a ‘directress’ because his/her role differs considerably from that of a teacher. She demonstrates the correct use of materials as the children individually choose them. She carefully observes the progress of each child and keeps a detailed record of their work. Each teacher has been trained to recognize individual periods of readiness. The Primary child seldom works alone. This is the age of groups and clubs – what Montessori called the ‘herd instinct’. Children want to do what others are doing. They explore friendships as well as the rules of society. Group lessons with corollary work and discussions are important parts of the learning process. As they collaborate on projects, children learn to identify and share their particular strengths and skills. Various social skills are necessary to make these collaborations work effectively. Through activities that build group cohesion and resolve conflicts, the children learn skills and tools that encourage the art of cooperative peacemaking. Primary children question and love to make rules. Although they may not always keep the rules themselves, they are constantly observing to make sure that everyone is following them. Teachers assist the child in sorting out how to act in different situations, learning basic rules of courtesy, and understanding what is considered right and wrong by society. Our approach to discipline is to help the children learn that they are responsible for what they do and that their actions have natural consequences. Whether the problem involves two people or the whole class, the teachers help the children learn how to solve problems on their own. Maria Montessori called the Primary curriculum Cosmic Education because its goal is to expose the child to the whole range of human knowledge in an integrated approach to learning set into the largest context possible. Contextual learning is the foundation for deep understanding. The context for the elementary curriculum is established in an overview of the history of the universe. As they study ancient civilizations the children discover that all aspects of knowledge including mathematics, language, history, botany, geography, music, and art developed the basic human needs. This understanding fosters a love for learning and eagerness to take their place as contributing members of the community. View full school

- St Dominic’s Catholic College was founded by the Dominican Sisters at Northcote in 1952 and later transferred to our present Henderson site in 1967. It continues the Dominicans’ proud 800+-year-old tradition of service to education. Our Catholic Christian outlook on life and belief in the Gospel values underpin the spirit of our school, reflected in the caring attitudes of members of our community as they live their faith and in the formal religious and educational experiences offered. Our Religious Education classes emphasize the ethos of the Dominican Order and while being fun and informative, also ensure that our girls will make informed decisions in their future lives and become mature Catholic women whose lives reflect their faith. Weekly Eucharistic celebrations and regular retreats for all levels involve everyone in the school, and students are welcome to use the chapel before and after school. St Dominic’s College will challenge students to achieve excellence by delivering a holistic education based on the living values of the Catholic Dominican tradition. Subject choices in the senior years are broad. Students are encouraged to take a balanced range of courses and then to further refine their interests and strengths as they move through the College. The land purchased for the School was a farm called "The Great Oaks" and true to its name, it was full of many oaks. The oak has become a symbol for the school over the years. St Paul’s takes its name from the greatest apostle of the Mediterranean, Saint Paul a man who laid the foundations of the church in Greece, Italy, and Turkey. From 1963 to 1969 several significant events occurred at the School under the stewardship of Headmaster Hornsby. Among these changes were the construction of the dining hall and the opening of the library and gymnasium and the dedication of the Chapel of Christ the King. Headmaster Tony Hart, 1970 to 1979, was the driving force to establish a venture school. He had a dream that "Surely one could let a boy spread his wings for a spell and live". This dream was fulfilled in the opening of Tihoi Venture School in 1979. 1985 saw the introduction of girls to St Paul’s with five girls beginning in that first year and a new house created with Harington Day House. In 1992 Harington Boarding House was opened. St Paul’s Collegiate School is one of New Zealand’s leading independent day and boarding secondary schools for Year 9-13 boys and Year 11-13 girls. Located in Hamilton, our school has a reputation for providing a personalized education that focuses on academic excellence. St Paul’s Collegiate School has a reputation for getting the best from its students and for consistently achieving some of New Zealand’s highest academic results. We make no apologies for setting high expectations. We want every one of our students to achieve personal bests in all areas of school life. More than often, these expectations are set much higher than other secondary schools – and our students deliver. While our strongest focus is ensuring our students are achieving their potential in their academic studies, so too is our focus on developing good character in every young man and woman. Through our Character Education program, ‘Over the Fence’ community service initiative, chapel program, and our promotion of an understanding of the importance of emotional intelligence, we are striving to prepare St Paul’s students to be resilient, agile, and contributing members of society. Located in Hamilton with a roll of 750 students, boys are welcomed from years 9-13, as a day or boarding students. The senior years at St Paul’s offer co-ed learning while the junior school, years 9 and 10 remain a single-sex boys’ school. Tihoi Venture School is New Zealand’s only 18-week outdoor program designed specifically for Year 10 boys. Students are stripped of modern technology, such as television and mobile phones, and placed into communal living with seven age-mates, regular schooling, and outdoor experiences. Both the outdoor and academic programs are underpinned by a clearly articulated and modeled virtues and values program that develops young men into independent, responsible, and contributing members of society. Hamilton campus boasts a modern student center (built-in 1998) and a state-of-the-art sports center which includes glass-back squash courts, indoor cricket training nets, spring floor netball/basketball courts, and a fully equipped exercise gym. The development of a water-based hockey turf (2007) was a welcome addition to the school as was a new dining room (built-in 2012) which provides a warm and comfortable space at mealtimes. St Paul’s offers New Zealand’s National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Senior students are also offered the opportunity to sit New Zealand Scholarship examinations in addition to NCEA and CIE. The scholarship is for high-achieving students, providing them with recognition and monetary rewards in their final years of schooling. In terms of preparing students for their secondary school qualifications, the School has a policy on small class sizes of less than 20, allowing for individual learning and one-on-one time between teacher and student. Smaller class sizes also mean that our teachers can tailor their teaching method to suit the needs of each student, ensuring that they continue to improve academically, performing to the best of their ability. In addition to St Paul’s personalized teaching approach, the School also provides a Learning Resources Unit (LRU) and English as a Second Language (ESOL) support to students who require a little extra help to achieve their best. All four of the school’s boarding houses were recently redeveloped to create modern, homely, boarding spaces that our students call their home-away-from-home. The high-tech learning space for St Paul’s Agribusiness course opened in late 2015. In 2017, the expansion of the Mary Hornsby Music School was completed which includes the new Evan McCulloch teaching classroom (doubles as a band practice facility), a recording studio to allow implementation of the new music technology curriculum, three group practice rooms, student storage, music office, and toilet facilities. The large foyer can be used as a teaching break-out space and for performances. St Paul’s is also in the process of redeveloping other areas of the school including a performance complex (extension from the Chapel), Hockey pavilion, and learning hub. View full school

We respect that the important responsibility parents have, is to make decisions to determine the best environment in which to place their child at this most sensitive time in their development. The values and experiences presented to the child now will have the greatest influence on shaping their character as an adult. Everything they are exposed to will create an impression in their mind and Montessori supports this most positively. We aim to support parents in this decision-making role with an offering geared to the development of your child’s natural human tendencies and developing characteristics. We are committed to developing an educational experience you and your child will cherish forever. One that prepares your child fully for their future where your child’s unique talents are awakened and nurtured where you feel involved and your contribution is valued. This Montessori Centre will deliver lasting value for you and your child, throughout the Waikato and Hamilton community. We have researched approaches in Montessori schools for several years, both in New Zealand and internationally. At this time we believe we have created a Montessori program that will demonstrate how Montessori is unique in the world of education, how Montessori deals holistically with developmental stages, and places no limits on a child’s potential in any area. Using good judgment and being able to take responsibility for our choices is a skill that is developed by experience and is one of the fundamental principles that is embedded in all our programs, even from 3 years old. Our approach to life and our personality is developed at such a young age our Montessori programs are here to support the growth in academic and authentic character development through all these childhood years. Children are grouped into 3 year age spans. There is constant interaction, problem-solving, child-to-child teaching, and socialization. Each age range has a specific learning environment prepared with materials and trained adults focused on the child’s developmental needs for self-construction. Our 2–6 years program supports the development of the child as an individual. Assisting the child with age-appropriate qualities and facts about their world. Our 6–12 years program extends the development of the intellect within the social community of the classroom. An integrated curriculum is delivered to support the child’s growing ‘reasoning mind’. Children completing the full program are naturally transformed as unique individuals fully prepared for the next step in their educational journey. Refinement of the senses is encouraged with activities to isolate visual discrimination, identify tastes and smells, develop a lightness of touch, and listening skills to associate sounds to objects. Beautifully crafted materials are used for each activity and these often lead into a math or science activity at a later point in the program. The 2-6 year child is absorbing everything from the environment sensorially and in an almost unconscious manner. An appreciation for different styles of music is introduced by having soft background instrumental music playing during the day. Each day children come together for a short group song time where rhythm and actions are introduced. Both receptive and expressive language is developed through engaging children in conversation, telling stories, listening to them, and encouraging self-expression. This is all done through numerous games and activities throughout the classroom. The development of writing involves two distinct processes: motoric or mechanical development (muscular and physical skills) and intellectual development (understanding of a symbol or letter representing sounds in words). The child’s work in the Montessori classroom involves activities to develop both these processes. Children who experience a full Montessori program generally make amazing progress in the development of reading and writing. Typically they have the advanced vocabulary, use of language and can undertake simple research projects and creative storytelling. Nourishing the development of the ‘mathematical mind’ is the place of the Montessori classroom. Montessori math materials introduce children to quantities and how to write the symbols for numbers. This quickly moves from counting to building numbers within the Decimal System and using numbers for mathematical operations. The Montessori materials and curriculum inspire children to Think logically, investigate and measure Use analysis, comparison, calculation, and reasoning. In Montessori, we aim to make mathematics exciting and fun. Children are very interested in people and animals from around the world. We encourage this by introducing them to the continents and countries of the world, the foods, flags, traditional dress, types of houses and transport, art and music, plants, and animal life. Our beautiful environment gives children early exposure to nature and we hope to create a reverence for life and a style of living that consciously makes an effort to conserve our natural resources and ecology. Our model of the 2-6 years program fosters a love of learning, independence, curiosity, confidence, responsibility, self-discipline, and respect. It is a transformational experience for children which truly prepares them for the intellectual journey of the 6-12 years period. We are preparing and building the foundation for a thinking and rational human being. Our ability to think is what defines us as humans. We can think and reflect, we can imagine into the future. It is the responsibility of the First Plane (0-6 years) to build a solid foundation for that growing being before he or she comes to the Second Plane (6-12 years). In the Second Plane, the child can only build upon what was accomplished in the First Plane. View full school
