At present, the children of Ystruth Primary School follow schemes and programs of work that comply with the Foundation Phase and the National Curriculum. Children aged 3 to 7 follow the Foundation Phase and from 7 to 11 they follow the National Curriculum. We are presently a Pioneer School. We have been selected by the Welsh Government to develop and trial the new curriculum which has been planned for all Welsh schools following the Successful Futures report by Professor Donaldson. A broad-based curriculum has been devised to provide all children with a wide range of experiences to stimulate their interest and imagination. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and numeracy skills through well-defined programs of work and activities. Thematic work develops subject-specific skills but is designed to develop the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills in line with the Literacy and Numeracy Framework. In addition and in line with the Successful Futures report, we are developing what we provide in thematic work to include ‘rich tasks’ which incorporate several skills from different curriculum areas in the completion of a given task. Most parents want a good education for their children but they also want them to be happy, feel safe, and secure. At Ystruth Primary we believe we can offer all these things. We are a rural, Church Aided School in the heart of the active and friendly community of Caerwys, situated between the Clwydian Mountains and the coast of North Wales. Our values are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that children should feel what it is like to succeed. that they should grow as well-rounded individuals. We aim to achieve happy, relaxed learners, who get a great deal of enjoyment out of what they do. They learn the importance of self-improvement and take responsibility for their learning. Recent building work includes the improvement of cloakroom facilities for older children and an office/meeting room extension. We benefit from a large hall and a well-equipped library. Each classroom is organized to reflect the needs of our children. For example, Foundation Phase has an outdoor area that is easily accessible. Our grounds are extensive, with hard surface areas, a spacious playing field, wooded areas, planting beds, a forest schools area, and a pond. Ysgol Y Waun became a new school in September 2012 following the amalgamation of Chapel Lane Infants School and Ceiriog Junior School. The school serves the Chirk community and a majority of our pupils move on to Dinas Bran High school in Llangollen. The Friends of Ysgol Y Waun aim to: Develop effective relationships between the staff, parents, and the wider community. Arrange events and activities that raise funds for equipment and projects in school to enhance the education of pupils. Organize social events for the enjoyment of pupils, their families, and the wider community. Support the school in making the final year at school a special one for pupils. The Cymraeg Campus Language Charter has been created by ERW Welsh in Education officers and is the first charter specifically created to develop Welsh in English medium schools. Cymraeg Campus has been piloted in 25 schools across our consortium with significant impact. The charter consists of three awards - bronze, silver, and gold. Schools attempt to complete these awards over three years - one each year. Each award comprises ten targets and these targets become more challenging as you progress from efydd - to Arian - to aur. Sometimes there are occasions when adults need to implement some form of sanction. At Ysgol Y Waun we use a behavior ladder system, displayed around the school, where the level of sanction is appropriate to the misdemeanor. Ysgol Gyfun y Strade was established in 1977 as a mixed Bilingual Comprehensive School (Ages 11-18). In September 2018 it will have well over 1,000 pupils with the first-year intake of approximately 200. The school is committed to maintaining and raising the standards of pupils’ work and behavior and promoting Welsh-medium education in a bilingual community. The Estyn Inspection (Report July 2017) stated that: Ysgol y Parc Infants’ School is an inclusive, welcoming, and caring community for all pupils. Teachers and pupils recognize and celebrate diversity well. As a result, a culture of mutual care and respect permeates across the school. Pupils have equal access to all areas of the school’s curriculum and the wide range of extra-curricular activities provided. The wellbeing of all pupils is a priority of the school and this underpins its caring ethos. The school is a very well-organized teaching and learning community. Our end of Foundation Phase results are always very high and children leave us ready to continue their educational journey in Junior School. The school was built in 1973 and as the school grew an extension was built in 1996. We are a community school with facilities for educating children between the ages of 3 to 7. There is an adventure playground on the main playing field. The grassed area has benches, tables, and logs for the children to use. The Nursery has its adventure playground and outdoor area. Ysgol y Llys creates a happy and safe environment for all the children. We aim to develop self-confidence and self-discipline in a caring and supportive atmosphere. The children are taught by qualified and enthusiastic staff, who demand high standards, to ensure that each child develops to his/her full potential in all aspects. As a Welsh-medium school, we ensure that all children in the school are fully bilingual. The school was established as a primary bilingual, co-educational day school in 1975. It is a parental choice that their children attend and of the children admitted some are Welsh speaking and the remainder come from non-Welsh speaking homes in Prestatyn and the surrounding area. Welsh is the official language of the school, but the majority of our newcomers are English speaking. The first task is to ensure that they settle down and then every possible effort is made to enable them to learn Welsh as soon as possible so that they can take their natural place in the life of the school. At the end of their time in this school, the children transfer to Ysgol Uwchradd Glan Clwyd. We are fortunate at Ysgol y Llys to have extensive and attractive grounds, which are pleasant for children to play in and ideal for use in conjunction with areas of the National Curriculum and Foundation Phase. We have a new hall which has excellent gymnastics equipment and a classroom for Cylch Meithrin and Meithrin Mwy. We use the woodland area regularly as a learning area. Taking a Holiday during term time- ALL requests for holidays during term time will be marked as UNAUTHORISED unless exceptional circumstances are highlighted. The headteacher will determine whether the exceptional circumstances apply. Parents may receive a Fixed Penalty Notice if their child has unauthorized absences (10 days or more) in term time. The decision to close a school is never made lightly. Every effort will be made to keep the school open but several factors must be taken into consideration – children and staff’s health and safety and the number of staff who are absent due to bad weather. In the past, we have closed the whole of the school because of bad weather and have also closed part of the school due to lack of staff in some Units. Again – we must emphasize that EVERY EFFORT will be made to stay open. The fact that many of Ysgol y Llys staff live in rural areas must be taken into account, as the effects of the weather can vary greatly from area to area. Ysgol y Llan is a Church in Wales Voluntary Aided school, commanding spectacular views over the River Dee, the Wirral, and beyond. Ysgol y Lawn is a caring, happy, and friendly environment where the education and happiness of your child are always our priorities. Ysgol y Lawn is located in the center of the town of Rhymney at the upper end of the Rhymney valley. The school provides Welsh-medium education for children who come from several villages to the north of Bargoed town and extends from Butetown to Deri. Caerphilly is the local education authority (LEA). The school moved to this location in 1992 occupying a building and site that once belonged to the local ironmaster. The site is extensive with grounds that include numerous play areas, places to sit, grassed areas, and a forest. Currently, there are 219 pupils aged between three and eleven on a roll, a figure that includes the equivalent of 36 full-time nursery-aged children. The majority come from the town of Rhymney itself buses to transport pupils from neighboring villages. Pupils are divided into eight classes, three of which have pupils across a two-year age range. Around 94% of the pupils come from homes where English is the main language. Since the school was last inspected in 2008, it has achieved many awards and gained Eco School and Fair Trade status. The school gained its 3rd green flag in 2013 and is currently working towards the platinum award for 2015. Three additional awards were presented to the school by Caerphilly’s Pride of Place Scheme, the first was awarded in 2011 for reducing waste, Ysgol y Lawnt were the overall winners for 2011. In 2012 and 2013, the school received an award for Sustainable transport – the Walking Bus. The school was established as a result of the increased demand for Welsh-medium education in Llangollen. Ysgol y Gwernant was opened for the first time in September 2005. Today we have 152 pupils on roll. There has been a significant increase in the number of parents who decide to send their children to a Welsh-medium school as they realize the benefits of being bilingual. We have 8 teachers and 5 support staff working at the school. The team is enthusiastic and works hard to raise standards. We pride ourselves in the high standards and achievements of the pupils, and the vast range of extracurricular activities offered at the school with pupils regularly successful at Urdd music competitions to sporting activities.
