Ysgol Tywyn is a bilingual comprehensive school that celebrated 120 years in 2014. The site is about 100 yards from the High Street of Tywyn, which is a small coastal town in south Gwynedd with a population of some four thousand. The school, with 297 pupils on roll in September 2018, and 15 full-time teaching staff, (including Senior Management Team) 5 part-time staff, and 8 Learning Support Staff, is an 11-16 school. 16+ pupils travel to a variety of colleges/schools in Gwynedd, Powys Dyfed, and beyond, though the majority go to Coleg Llandrillo (Dolgellau). The approximate annual catchment intake of 55 pupils comes from four primary schools, stretching from Craig y Deryn, Llanegryn to the north, Corris to the east, and Pennal to the south, and thus many travels some distance to school. In addition, several trips from outside the catchment area. The home and educational background of the pupils is varied and includes those who come from a home where both parents are Welsh-speaking, to those whose knowledge of Welsh is very limited, only having moved into the area recently. Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern is a county comprehensive school providing education for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 18. Currently, there are about 650 pupils on the roll, approximately 80 of them in the Senior School. It is a natural bilingual community school where, in addition to English, considerable attention is given to the use of the Welsh language as a medium of instruction. The school was opened in 1977 and is situated on the outskirts of Bodedern in a quiet and safe rural environment. The Urdd county office and Welsh Language Unit are very conveniently based on site. We give our pupils opportunities to work in a modern theatre, to enjoy the sports and leisure facilities and to use the latest computer technology to access and present information. Pupils may choose to stay inside the building and use these facilities during break and lunchtimes. These facilities are available to the public during the evenings and extensive use is made of the theatre, the gymnasium, the sports hall, “Canolfan Bro Alaw” and some of the specialist teaching rooms. Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi is a bilingual mixed comprehensive for 11-18-year-olds with an annual intake of approximately 90 pupils and the Sixth Form of about 120. It was established in1898, with the original school building still in use alongside many new buildings. The school serves a wide catchment area and is designated a naturally bilingual school, where pupils are taught through both the medium of Welsh and English. Ysgol Tremeirchion is a Welsh Medium (Category 1), Voluntary Controlled Church in Wales Primary School which was first established in 1765. The present building was built in 1865 with the door opening for pupils on June 24th, 1866. An extension was built in 2003. Around 18% of the pupils are from Welsh-speaking homes with both parents speaking Welsh, with the remainder from either bilingual or English speaking. The parents and pupils are very supportive of the Welsh language and Welsh-medium education. The school is also a Church school. If you wish, you can enroll your child in nursery class in September following their 3rd birthday. Having a place in a nursery class at a particular school does not guarantee your child a place in a reception class at that school, and you will need to make a new application for reception class. You can enroll your child in a reception class, at either an infant or primary school, in the September following the child’s 4th birthday. The school offers education for nursery pupils in the morning. Through collaboration with Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin, the school can offer afternoon sessions in the ‘Old School’. Welsh is the main language of teaching and learning in the school and English is introduced as a subject when pupils are in Year 3. There are currently 70 pupils on our register. This includes 59 full-time and 11 nursery pupils who attend in the morning. At Ysgol Tremeirchion, children come first and our priority is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning whilst at the same time providing rich and truly enjoyable learning experiences for our community of children.
