About Me

  1. We believe that each individual has limitless worth and potential, and this ‘approach to life, as Dr. Montessori put it, is at the heart of philosophy. We believe that by providing students with a nurturing environment within which we cater for the personal and intellectual development of each child, we can allow each student to fulfill his/her potential. MMS is dedicated to providing a quality education for all students from all walks of life including those with different abilities who might need specialized help to succeed in school, at university, and in life. We aim to graduate independent thinkers who are self-motivated individuals ready and able to challenge themselves and play an integral part in their community. The MMS philosophy is to instill in our students a deeply rooted sense of pride in themselves and their cultural heritage, while at the same time promoting international-mindedness and a strongly held understanding of and respect for differences between cultures and individuals. We foster ethical behavior and enforce a strong Academic Honesty Policy. We aim to ensure that both our rigorous academic and rich extra-curricular programs work together to provide students with a holistic learning experience. We believe that this can only succeed through a high level of cooperative planning, teaching, and evaluation, designed to produce success in advancing the learning process of the students. The Modern Montessori School has always been known as an institution that places considerable importance on the development and academic performance of its students, adopting methods that foster complementary values like creativity, character, exploration, and the independent thinking of a child. We have made sure and were extra careful to take this into account meticulously with everything new we undertook. The new building will house large classrooms and offices, state-of-the-art science laboratories, art rooms and studios, an MYP library, a Research & Robotics Lab, an examination hall that comfortably fits up to 130 students with a designated area for our students that might need extra time and/or allowances, as well as a state-of-the-art MMS Tech Hub equipped with the latest technology to make sure our students’ passions, interests and wants are nurtured both inside and outside the classroom. We believe that MMS students, with a Montessori methodology and philosophy foundation at the Kindergarten in their educational and developmental journey, and going through the IB continuum (PYP, MYP then DP) in their primary and formative years, will find themselves fully equipped, independent and prepared to face the world to be leading members of any community they choose to belong to. Our staff has worked diligently and tirelessly to make sure the programs are applied to the highest of standards, whilst still maintaining the MMS essence and atmosphere encouraging and promoting autonomy, educational rights, and learning achievements. Montessori School has accomplished since its foundation and its present position as one of the leading schools in our region. A well-established educational institution that aims to provide students with an inspiring environment where they can develop to their full potential. Since its establishment, the Modern Montessori School has been recognized for exposing its students to multiple experiences that reinforce the significance of understanding and accepting the differences that make every person unique. With this being an embedded aspect in our mission, we aim for every MMS graduate to be a well-rounded, responsible, aware, effective, hardworking, and positive member of any community he/she find themselves living in. As the second school in Jordan to become a certified IB college, our goal is to give our students the best possible educational experience and provide them with an ethical foundation to become responsible for their own choices. First established in 1985, MMS has been designed to meet international. It is accredited by the International Centre for Montessori Education (ICME) and has been an IBDP school since 1998. With highly qualified and professional faculty and staff members, our school is committed to offering various academic and non-academic services and opportunities for students to ensure they attain the best possible holistic educational experience. The Modern Montessori Kindergarten’s vision is to provide excellence in KG education by making the benefits of the Montessori Method accessible to the community. Its objective is to prepare the children to reach their full potential and to play a responsible role in protecting the global environment and fostering peace and harmony with the natural processes and community interests. We encourage our students to develop their curiosity and gain knowledge through exploring transdisciplinary themes, inspired by traditional disciplines. This is achieved by engaging them in a wide range of educational and Extracurricular Activities relevant to issues of both local and global significance. As an MYP accredited school, the MMS Middle School connects the Primary Years to the Diploma Programme providing vertical consistency along the IB continuum of education. It is a rigorous program that aims to build upon the fundamental skills and knowledge developed in the Primary Years, and prepares and enables a smooth transition into their subsequent IB program.
  2. Chateau des Bambini simply means “Children’s Castle” in Italian. Dr. Maria Montessori is the first physician and educator who opened the first Montessori school in Rome. She spent many years observing and working with children, and her method captured my interest. I have raised 3 children, and during that time, English nurseries/preschools and Montessori kindergartens were very difficult to find. This is why I decided to open a school of my own. Our school has had over 2,000 graduates varying from 40 different nationalities. Most of them attended universities at well-known schools abroad such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, etc. I am truly amazed that up to now, most of them are still connected. Our school is set to a “home-like” environment which helps promote a transition from home to school life, and our teachers are Montessori certified. Chateau des Bambini is supports working parents and so we are open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. If you are interested in visiting our school, please call us for an appointment. We will welcome you and your child to the world of Montessori. Preschool/Kindergarten is a very important beginning to a child's school experience. Here at Chateau des Bambini Montessori School, we promote the joy of learning. The children who experience the joy of learning develop self-confidence. As a Montessori teacher, I understand that every child is unique, so I respect each child as an individual with their interest. They have the freedom to make choices, choose tasks that interest and challenge them. I step back while the children are working to allow them to learn from their discoveries and develop their skills at their own pace. Montessori education is challenging, promotes independence, and the children learn to be more responsible. They learn directly from their environment engaging themselves in the learning process and enhance critical thinking skills. In the Montessori environment, the children work with developmentally appropriate materials that will develop natural curiosity which helps in later life and helps them grow. This promotes enthusiasm and a love of learning. We provide an array of special after-school activities after 4:00 pm for those at least 4 years of age who can participate. Designed to engage and inspire creativity, exercise, and intellect. Activities include dance, yoga, cooking, art, abacus, and scientific discovery. Practical life encompasses a wide range of real-life activities and engages children in real-life daily routines. It is divided into four main areas: Preliminary activities and Body Movement Care of self Care of Environment and Grace and Courtesy. These activities will strengthen their fine and gross motor skills and lengthen their concentration span through the repetition of work, enhancement of the development of order, coordination, independence, self-esteem, and confidence. Practical life activities include sewing, weaving, sorting, scooping, transferring, pouring. In the mathematics area, children are introduced to materials that encourage their continuous learning in the world of numbers. They are taught quantity, solving problems, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as counting to infinitive numbers. It allows the child to understand analysis and clear reasoning. In the language area, the children are enriched in a bilingual environment that exposes them to many words, forms of poetry, and multi-cultural literature. Letters of the alphabet are introduced phonetically, which help to guide the children in word building and sentence structures.100% Homemade Organic Lunch Box, available by order. 1 Lunch Box ¥680. Luca Deli is an Organic Catering Service with every meal prepared and delivered to our school daily. If you are interested in ordering lunch for your child!
  3. Children’s House is tucked away in a quiet residential area of Motoazabu. The School is truly a “Children’s House” where Montessori materials and furniture are sized for children. Founded and run by passionate Montessori teachers who strive to create a comfortable environment for all children. Our mission is to offer an authentic Montessori education, based on the principles, methods, and activities of Maria Montessori. Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. She was one of the first female physicians. Maria Montessori innovated the Montessori approach to education which is focused on “following the interests of the child.” She believed that everyone learns differently, and at their own pace. The Montessori prepared environment can stimulate the individual interests of children. We currently offer one infant classroom, for children between the age of twelve months to thirty-six months, and one primary Montessori classroom, for children three to six years old. The day starts at 8:30 am and finishes at 3 pm. We also offer After School Care from 3 pm to 5 pm which is available upon request. The last step is to arrange a time for your child to come in and meet their new teacher. This is a great way for your child to get familiar with their new environment!
  4. The Anglo-Italian School, Montessori Division, is an international school of preschool through 8th-grade students. The only English-based Montessori school in Italy. The school, founded in 1958 by a group of NATO parents, is located in a secure setting on the former NATO, JFC HEADQUARTERS Command Base. The school’s beautiful property overlooks the Bay of Naples. Mount Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri are both visible through the classroom windows. The multi-cultural student body is comprised of dependent children of NATO countries, military and diplomatic personnel, and the host nation – Italy. The area provides both a secure environment and an international setting for your child’s schooling. The school administration has invested in renovations to provide clean and attractive surroundings for the students and to ensure all standards required by Italian and European laws are met. The school has beautiful gardens and playground areas in addition to access to The Air Dome, a large gymnasium built by NATO. All teachers are mother-tongue English speakers, and except for foreign languages, classroom instruction is in English. Most teachers are certified in the United States and from other English-speaking countries. The school has a very intensive ESL program for students who arrive with limited English skills. The school follows an international and USA curriculum, tailored using the best models of various international associations. International cooperation and cultural exchange, as well as foreign languages, are emphasized. All students are multi-lingual when they leave the school. Montessori philosophies and instructional techniques are used. Small classes provide for individual instruction and attention and ensure that each student reaches his or her full potential. Information technology is also used in research, and to augment traditional instruction. The demanding curriculum provides excellent preparation for both classical and scientific follow-on study. Although the main thrust of education is international, the school also endeavors to satisfy specific requirements of individual national groups. A full range of extracurricular activities is available including physical education, drama, art, music, information technology, and foreign language study. Classes meet from 08:30 to 15:00. Extended care is available before and after school from 07:30-08:15 and 15:15-17:15. Besides our standard curriculum, we have a computer lab, a dynamic ESL (English as a Second Language) program, intensive foreign languages, extra-curricular after-school classes, and ISL (Italian as a Second Language). Our large fenced-in playground offers a variety of play equipment in a park-like setting filled with grassy areas, flowers, and trees. The school has a full library and a Multi-Media Center where students’ recreational reading and informational needs can be met through books and technology. With the addition of a SmartBoard, the Librarian can collaborate with other teachers to provide information literacy skills instruction that fosters self-directed learning and the love of reading. The school is periodically inspected by members of both the Italian Public Education and the Montessori Society. At the end of each school year, a special commission of the Italian Public Education Department proctors Italian students for their Italian State exams. The elementary, middle school, and 9th/10th-grade students also receive an evaluation from an American achievement test at the end of the school year. In addition to our strong academic curriculum, our school also devotes each month of the school year to learn about a different NATO country. With this program, the children develop a better understanding of the cultures of our international environment. The Anglo-Italian School is authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education (decree 3105/41-2), is accredited and guaranteed by The Association of Montessori International, and is a member of The American Montessori Society and the European Council of International Schools. Admission is based on screening exams and interviews, previous performance, and the student’s ability to benefit from the program. The common element among parents is their interest in providing their children with a high-quality education based on the principles of the Montessori Method.

  6. To provide a quality International & National Curriculum. Supported by the Montessori method of learning. Combined with The Leader in Me – ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Delivered by Qualified Teachers who are continuing to develop their knowledge and skills. In a Quality Environment, which is safe, comfortable, and nurturing. Where children can grow and develop their own individual personal qualities and talents. Woodlands will strive to Empower Children by providing a Comprehensive Academic Curriculum and Holistic Approach to Learning creating Intelligent, Independent, and Responsible Individuals. The Montessori Method of teaching aims for the fullest possible development of the whole child, ultimately preparing him/her for lives many rich experiences. Complemented by her training in medicine, psychology, and anthropology, Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952) developed her philosophy of education based upon actual observations of children. Children pass through sensitive periods of development early in life. Dr. Montessori described the child's mind between the time of birth and six years of age as the "absorbent mind". It is during this stage that a child has a tremendous ability to learn and assimilate from the world around him/her, without conscious effort. During this time, children are particularly receptive to certain external stimuli. A Montessori teacher recognizes and takes advantage of these highly perceptive stages through the introduction of materials and activities which are specially designed to stimulate the intellect. Encouraged to focus his/her attention on one particular quality, the child works at his/her own optimum level – in an environment where beauty and orderliness are emphasized and appreciated. A spontaneous love of "work" is revealed as the child is given the freedom (within boundaries) to make his/her own choices. Montessori teachers are trained facilitators in the classroom, always ready to assist and direct. Their purpose is to stimulate the child's enthusiasm for learning and to guide it, without interfering with the child's natural desire to teach him/herself and become independent. Each child works through his/her individual cycle of activities and learns to truly understand according to his/her own unique needs and capabilities. Everything in a Montessori classroom has a specific use or purpose. There is nothing in the prepared environment that the child cannot see or touch. All of the furniture and equipment is scaled down to the child's size and is within easy reach. A quality Montessori classroom has a busy, productive atmosphere where joy and respect abound. Within such an enriched environment, freedom, responsibility, and social and intellectual development spontaneously flourish!
  7. Montessori Bali was established in 1998 by Kadek Wiranatha and his wife Natalia Sinclaire, a committed Montessorian who recognized how an authentic Montessori program could benefit the children of Bali. This foundation school consisted of the “Rose Class”, a single preschool classroom with 14 children. The school was so well received that by 2002 a second preschool class, the “Garden Class” was added. Montessori School Bali, a hidden oasis in the hustle and bustle of Berawa. Walk in the gates and you will experience a sense of tranquility that is not obvious from the street. This sense of calm and peace extends into our classrooms where children of all ages go about their day with dignity and purpose, making choices about what is right for them, and getting on with their learning. The Montessori system of education is universal and works just as amazingly here in Bali as in France, Australia, Canada, Thailand, and China. The children here seem to run into school in the morning with beaming smiles, greeting everyone they pass with a pleasant ‘Selamat page, or ‘good morning’ and a polite shake of the hand. As they grow you see the growth in confidence that this simple act engenders, from the young one who doesn’t yet want to and walks past quietly, to the 12-year-old who makes direct eye contact and gives a firm handshake as they say hello. This growth in confidence can be seen in other ways as children move through the school as well, for instance when they stand up in front of an audience to present research, sing, play or recite. At Bali Montessori School your children will have the opportunity to develop in a way that makes the most of their strengths. They will have broad, uninterrupted expanses of time in which to immerse themselves deeply into work that is intensely interesting to them. The chance to do this is precious and creates a sense of contentment and joy that is wonderful to see.

  9. The first Montessori school established in Jakarta began in 1981 as a playgroup under the name of Srikandi Montessori School and was formed under the guidance of Gloria Kalff. Due to the ever-increasing appeal for Montessori education, the school evolved into a complete primary program, providing education for children from 2 years old through elementary Grade 6. The school changed its name to Jayakarta Montessori School in 1995. The buildings are architecturally designed and equipped with facilities to meet the Montessori philosophy. The specially prescribed Montessori equipment is imported exclusively from the official worldwide manufacturer, Neinhuis Montessori, Holland. A Montessori teacher and a classroom assistant staff each classroom. The teachers receive training from an approved Montessori training center. Classroom assistants are selected based on their understanding of the principles of child development and their ability to observe the child. The remainder of the staff includes part-time specialist instructors, assistants, and administrative staff. Jayakarta Montessori School is a preschool and elementary school located in Kemang, South Jakarta, offering programs for children from 18 months to 11 years of age. Through the Montessori approach, students are motivated to learn naturally by providing a prepared environment and materials which the children can use at their own pace. This approach focuses on building intrinsic motivation, independence, self-discipline, and a positive self-image. Each child is taught the necessary skills to prepare them for the next phase, be it in a larger school, in another international school, or back home overseas. Montessori children are adaptable. Since they have been encouraged to make decisions from an early age, these children are problem-solvers who can make choices and manage their time well. They have also been encouraged to exchange ideas and to discuss their work freely with others. Good communication skills ease the way in new settings. Montessori programs, based on self-directed, non-competitive activities, help children develop good self-images and the confidence to face challenges and change. Jayakarta Montessori School is a corresponding member of the American Montessori Society, NYC, New York.

  14. Dr. Montessori believed that children have an innate positive attitude towards learning. In a Montessori classroom, there is a unique atmosphere of cheerful orderliness, calmness, and purposeful work. The Montessori approach is child-centered but adult-guided. It is structured but free for learning, and enjoyably emphasizes basics. Respect for the child is paramount. Montessori materials are designed to aid in the child’s prevailing learning sensitivities. Dr. Montessori developed the notion of “the right time to learn” – a heightened sensitivity when a child shows a robust spontaneous interest in certain aspects of the environment. The Montessori materials are a significant component of the prepared environment. They provide the opportunity for a child to work on tasks for extended periods, and these experiences support the development of concentration. An essential feature of the materials is that they are mostly self-correcting. How the children are encouraged to use the materials supports the development of orderly work habits and persistence at the task (problem-solving). Central to Dr. Montessori’s concept of education is the idea that the child develops by being active. Children will come to know about their world if given the freedom to engage their full attention to exploring and discovery. In the classroom, freedom is the key to a child’s spontaneous activity. Children are given the freedom to choose what work they will do and how long they will do it. A balance is maintained between the need of each individual to have sufficient freedom to grow and develop towards independence and the necessity for order and harmony within the group. The mixed age group with children of three, four, and five years working in the same environment is a significant contributor to the learning outcomes. This further supports the growing child’s social learning. The three-year age range is a Montessori school feature, so that commitment to a three-year program is a fundamental principle. By giving your child a Montessori education, you will have peace of mind knowing that your child’s early education prepares them academically and socially for a lifetime of learning. Your child will benefit from our approach, which helps them become confident and self-motivated and gives them the best start in life. Our Directresses are exceptional. Spend 30 minutes with them, and you will come away convinced that your child deserves a place at our school. View full school

All teaching and support staff at Avalon are committed to creating a pleasant, nurturing, and safe environment, enabling intellectual, social, physical, and artistic learning and development. We believe that staff, students, and parents share equally in the achievement of our goals. A teacher in an authentic Montessori environment will hold a Montessori Teaching diploma. Fully qualified Montessori teachers receive rigorous training in the proper use of the materials and learn about the child's development – emotional, physical, intellectual, moral, and social. Dr. Montessori saw education as a natural process for children. Through careful observation, a Montessori teacher follows the child's interests and needs, providing lessons and guidance when necessary. Our teaching staff adheres to both the letter and the spirit of the pedagogy that governs the Montessori Method of Education and Avalon Children's Montessori School. Our classroom assistants also receive training and certification in the Montessori philosophy of education. Our specialists include a music teacher, French teacher, art teacher, and physical education teacher. Avalon's staff is a dedicated team of people who enjoy working together to ensure success for both the school and every student. Our objective is to guide the children with respect and understanding, developing a love of learning that will last a lifetime. Whenever possible, staff are encouraged to participate in professional development. All teachers and assistants have current first aid and CPR training. The Avalon Staff is headed by School Directors Christine Keery, Sherry Vanderkooi, and Angie Samis, Montessori teachers, who founded the school in 1999. Avalon is proud to be celebrating 20 years in the Beach! We believe in helping others within our community as well as the community at large. Since opening in 2000, community involvement has always been an integral part of the Avalon philosophy, and everyone is encouraged to become involved. These are some of the organizations and initiatives Avalon has supported over the years. Meeting the child's needs is a crucial principle in Montessori education and is something we strive for at Avalon. Choosing the best environment for your child is very important. At Avalon Children's Montessori School, we believe this decision should not be taken lightly by the family or by the school. The Casa Program is for children ages 2 1/2 to 6 years of age. We offer full time and part-time options. The Elementary Program is designed to meet the child's needs during the second stage of development, for children six years and older. Within the Elementary environment, we offer two multi-aged classes – Lower and Upper Elementary. Avalon is the first Montessori school in the Beach to offer a Senior School program. Upon completion at 14 years of age, senior students graduate prepared to meet the expectations of secondary school. They are learning Support Program. Some elementary students in grades 1 through 8, who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities and require additional support in a classroom environment, may be able to use our Learning Support Program. The Learning Support Program provides an opportunity for the student to receive the extra time and attention needed to succeed academically. We are unable to support children requiring one on one support. Space in this program is minimal. Please speak to us for more information. Uniforms are mandatory for all elementary and senior-level students. We believe a uniform instills self-respect, for peers, and the learning environment. A uniform eliminates stereotypes among peers. Extended Care is offered beyond regular school hours. We offer before school care from 8-8:30 am and after school care from 4-5 pm daily. Monthly fees are reasonable and available upon request. We offer a hot catered nutritious lunch for all full-time Casa and Lower Elementary students. As students move up through the elementary and senior programs, there are opportunities for opting out of the mandatory lunch program. Parents are encouraged to provide healthy snacks for the classrooms. Extracurricular activities are offered during and after school hours and provide a rich and diverse learning environment. These activities vary from year to year and depend upon the interests of the students. Over the years, extracurricular activities have included chess club, piano, drama, cross country running, dancing, karate, and homework club. Field trips and classroom visitors are fun ways to explore and learn and allow parents to participate in the school. We utilize many of the resources available within our community and beyond to augment the curriculum. At Avalon, one of the many benefits of a small school setting is the level of communication between the school and the families. It provides a great sense of community and a love of learning for everyone involved. View full school
  20. The Aurora Montessori School (AMS) has been offering excellence in education for 27 years for children 18 months to grade 8. Our Staff understands and then educate children's unique capabilities and human potential, producing responsible, self-directed learners and critical thinkers. A multitude of individual interest clubs, Spring and Summer Camps, and Before and After-school Programs are just some of the enhancements that make our school unique. Our mission is to help children realize the great potential that rests within them by assisting them in developing a sense of self and inspiring them to act on their ambitions. By adhering to the core principles and philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori, we are devoted to each child's intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development. The Aurora Montessori School story began in 1989 when the founder and Principal of Aurora Montessori, Sharon Kashani, rented a picturesque farmhouse on the corner of Bayview Avenue and Wellington Street in Aurora. Mrs. Kashani's main goal was to create an environment and educational curricula that would enhance children's learning on all levels. Her vision was to provide academic support while allowing each child to recognize his or her inner potential and talent by following the educational formula perfected by Maria Montessori. Upon opening, AMS accommodated twelve students who were enrolled at the newly founded school. AMS programs were specifically developed to assist children during their most formative years, an approach which many of Aurora's young families embraced. The values and unique style of teaching and learning at AMS quickly helped the school gain recognition. The school initially focused on children aged 3-6, and gradually expanded to include education for students up to grade 8. As our attic filled with books, and our walls in drawings and student photos, it became clear that our small farmhouse was becoming too small to accommodate our growing student body. With four portable classrooms added in the coming years, the AMS community continued to blossom and grow to just over 120 students. By September of 1998, the school's programs had become well-established. Our modest Wellington campus was upgraded to today's 36,000 square foot facility that comprises ample working space for our students and Staff. The current state-of-the-art facility and advanced learning programs provide a snapshot of the school's historical trajectory towards new and exciting frontiers of learning and child development. Building self-motivation and self-confidence within children are key factors in allowing them to reach their learning potential. The Montessori method was designed to achieve these goals by incorporating specially integrated educational activities into a child's daily school routine. The Montessori method emphasizes a child's interaction with his or her environment by utilizing all five senses. On a fundamental level, this method is meant to stimulate the child's interest while fostering a heightened level of understanding of their studies at the same time. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own individual pace and are given the freedom to explore a seemingly infinite array of the subject matter. At AMS, learning is an exciting process of discovery, and our school stays true to core Montessori values, providing an environment that promotes desirable behavioral attributes, such as: Having compassion and respect for others Independence Responsibility Improved concentration, motivation, and self-discipline Self-confidence Foster self-discovery and reasoning Montessori classes form communities where older children are motivated to share their knowledge with their younger colleagues. Countless academic and private research studies have shown that Montessori principles and philosophies are proven to yield superior results to traditional educational models when administered correctly. The child has a deep love and needs for purposeful work. However, he works not as an adult for profit and completion of a job, but for the sake of the activity itself. This activity accomplishes his most important goal: the development of himself, his mental, physical, and mental powers. Montessori created a Cosmic Curriculum through which a child develops an understanding and appreciation of everything that has occurred in order for the world to exist in its present state. AMS now sits on 14 rolling acres at the end of the beautiful winding Aurora Road, on the corner of St. John's Sideroad and Industrial Parkway. AMS holds to Mrs. Kashani's vision, as AMS staff, parents, and children continually advance towards a brighter educational future. The spirit of AMS is one that continues to grow and develop as a part of the local Aurora community, and we are happy to welcome new faces and familiar friends alike. Children from 18 months to 14 years of age are welcome to enjoy the advantages of our thriving educational establishment. View full school
  21. Founded in 2001, Alive Montessori & Private School aims to provide an environment where educational results can be achieved by children of all abilities and from all cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Students at Alive School develop high standards of integrity, with confidence in themselves and respect for others. We provide a friendly, caring, and safe environment where students can grow in confidence and become successful. With a wide variety of activities, we help set students on their chosen paths. Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 and continued her education until she died in 1952. Ahead of her time, she was the first woman in Italian history to earn a medical doctor's degree. After practicing medicine for only a few years, she embarked on the career path for becoming famous as an enlightened educator for young children. She was convinced that the conventional schooling methodology left much to be desired and developed her system to enable children to learn. This involved creating a carefully structured and stimulating environment where children are exposed to many materials and activities they learn. Most parents are amazed when they first see the richness of materials in a Montessori classroom; it is undoubtedly different from the typical classroom in our public schools. Maria Montessori designed her materials along "sensorial" lines to allow them to discover, learn, and develop using all their senses. Sandpaper letters and numbers, geometric shapes to manipulate and compare, wooden blocks and beads for adding and multiplying, and so much more contribute to the child's understanding of the world around him. Dr. Montessori consistently taught reading and writing to children between the ages of four and six, well below the expected norm in our public school system. She was of the firm belief that this was the best time to do so. She believed that children must re-create whatever it is that they are learning in order to understand it. For this reason, she taught these vital skills in the reverse order from our usual educational standard – writing and then reading. From a humble start in a single room teaching poor children using her educational ideas, the Montessori Method of education has spread throughout much of the world for a simple reason. As a parent, there is no better gift you can give your child than a solid education that gives him the skills and confidence to succeed in his life. Julia Simon, the principal of the Alive School, is a certified Montessori pre-school teacher (Maria Montessori preferred the term "directress," as this more accurately described the function – to direct the children to discover and learn on their own). Computers and electronic calculators are excellent tools that did not exist until just a few short years ago. However, one unexpected consequence of their arrival seems to have been a general deterioration in our schools' math ability. For example, we often see grades 3, 4, and 5 children unable to do the most straightforward addition and multiplication without using a calculator (or their fingers). Why should this be? Because students are now allowed to use calculators on their exams, it seems that basic drills of multiplication tables or adding columns of numbers are no longer considered important enough to be taught in school. Even worse, since problems can be entered into a computer or calculator without much thought, the basic concepts behind them are often not well understood. This becomes apparent when students "memorize" some procedure or formula and yet have no idea why it works. They may be able to rotely and mechanically work out problems and even do well on exams. However, without understanding why these procedures work, they eventually fall on their heads as the math becomes more difficult. Alternatively, they graduate not being able to use what they have supposedly learned in school. Using real-life examples and materials that demonstrate the concepts behind all math procedures, our students learn that math is a valuable subject that can be applied to the world around them. With this understanding as a solid foundation, they can gain skill and certainty by practicing and drilling. We ensure that our students thoroughly practice all aspects of basic calculation – arithmetic – so they are not helpless if a calculator is not available. Far from being a drudgery, when math concepts are fully understood and practiced, students develop a good number sense and take pride in their new-found skills. Our modern world is full of distractions that can cause our children to have difficulty focusing. Accurately taught, math is an excellent way of disciplining and training the mind that has benefits in all aspects of a child's life that require the ability to concentrate. Math, dealing with quantities, shapes, measurements, numbers, calculations, and relationships in the physical world, is essential. Students must learn the basic concepts and develop a particular skill in applying them to their finances, their future jobs, and their lives. View full school

24. View full school
