Founded in 1964, Canterbury School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. At Canterbury, the foundation of our school is based upon four tenets: academics, leadership, character, and service. St Thomas of Canterbury is a Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary School in the diocese of Southwark. The school exists primarily to serve the Catholic community however, the Governing Body welcomes applications, subject to availability, of places from non-catholic families who support the religious ethos of the school. The responsibility for the admission of pupils rests with the Governors who are the admitting authority. After consulting with the Local Authority the Governors tend to admit 90 pupils to the Reception class at the beginning of the school year which starts in September. In Nursery, children may be admitted the term after their third birthday. We have three intakes September, January, and April. Children will be allocated a part-time place which will be either a morning or afternoon session. Applications need to be made directly to the school. Children will be admitted for full-time schooling at the beginning of the academic year in which they become of statutory school age (five years old). Where an application place for Reception is successful, parents/carers are invited to meet the Headteacher and staff in the Summer term and a carefully planned transition program is implemented. St Thomas of Canterbury Primary school encourages the participation and inclusion of all children regardless of their needs and abilities. Teachers provide a rich, balanced and differentiated curriculum to ensure that all our pupils fulfill their full potential. The school draws upon the support of the Inclusion Manager, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Integrated Service from Merton and other outside agencies to ensure pupils receive the best provision possible. The school values the key role parents play in the education of their children and ensure that parents are involved in any decisions made regarding the needs of their children. The Designated Safeguarding Leads will strive to ensure that children are safe, happy, and making progress. They also provide support to staff members to carry out their safeguarding duties. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play in safeguarding children. School staff is particularly important as they are in a position to identify concerns early and provide help for children, to prevent concerns from escalating. Schools and their staff form part of the wider safeguarding system for children. This system is described in statutory guidance “Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015”. Schools work with social care, the police, health services, and other services to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. Parents are encouraged to share their concerns and celebrate their children’s success with all members of staff. We recognize that there may be times when parents would like to discuss matters outside of the scheduled parent–teacher consultations. Canterbury High School is an Ottawa-Carleton District School Board high school in the Elmvale Acres neighborhood of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is an arts magnet school and located at 900 Canterbury Ave. It serves 1304 students. While offering both an arts program and a general program, Canterbury is known primarily for the arts. The Arts Canterbury program began in 1983. It was recently rated by Maclean's Magazine as the top high school for the arts in Canada. It is not the top arts high school, which would mean the best school overall of all art schools. Instead it is the best high school specifically for the arts. The school opened in 1969 as a comprehensive high school. It was the last in a series of ten high schools built by the Collegiate Board to deal with the baby boom. At the time of its opening, it was considered an extremely modern school, employing all the latest ideas in education. Most notably many of its walls were moveable, allowing for an easy reorganization of space. It also had one of the largest libraries of any secondary school. Canterbury is a semester school. Students attend four classes per day. Students are enrolled in 8 courses per year in grades 9, 10, and 11 with the option of 6 or more courses in grade 12. The College began teaching on Monday 2 February 1987 on its beautiful site overlooking the Logan River and its official opening ceremony in September. Originally named The College of the Good Shepherd, 73 students began across Years 6, 7, and 8. Students were taught by the Head, two full-time and three part-time teachers in two ex-mining development recreation huts until Stage 1 of the permanent buildings were available for use later that year. Parents, teachers, and students worked together to develop the land, originally a dairy farm, to build the school into a place that would provide quality academic, cultural, and sporting opportunities and facilities. It has continued to grow into a beautiful campus with state-of-the-art facilities and a student population of more than 1400, which stands now. The Charter of Values is an integral part of Canterbury College's life and is evident in all we do. Our Code of Conduct complements it, an agreement we make within our community that exemplifies how we live our lives within the Charter of Values. The pathways include a rigorous traditional academic program, Vocational Education and Training programs, or a combination of both. School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are also available. The unique Canterbury College Arts Academy immerses talented students in extension and enrichment experiences linked to pathways leading to careers in the Arts. Program partners include Universities, TAFEs, and other Training Providers.
