Khalsa School is one of the oldest, largest, and most reputable Sikh institutions of learning in British Columbia. Founded in 1986 by Bhai Jeevan Singh Ji, Khalsa School has provided high-quality education to students of all faiths and backgrounds for over 30 years. Currently, we have five campuses, all of which follow the BC Ministry of Education curriculum. At Khalsa School, we believe that education is a holistic endeavor. Through our extensive academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs, we prepare our students to prosper inside, as well as outside classrooms. Our extracurricular programs also help students by providing an outlet to help them grow as individuals. Each year, our high school students graduate and get accepted by top-ranked universities across the province.
In addition, we also put our focus on Sikh values to help students become spiritually inclined, honest, and compassionate individuals. Education carries with it an ethical obligation, to improve and serve society. In drawing from the rich history, traditions, and heritage of the Sikh faith we work to cultivate in our students the values of compassion, service to humanity, justice, truth, and a love of knowledge.
At Khalsa School, we aim to provide excellent quality of education for all our students. It is our firm belief that every student can learn regardless of their circumstance. Living up to this ideal requires that we at Khalsa School have a holistic approach to education that will stand the test of time. In keeping with our principle of lifelong learning, we understand that approaches to education will evolve, both as the world changes and as we continually encounter new and best pedagogical practices.
Developing ethical students who excel in and outside the classroom and who are grounded in the traditions and heritage from which they come, requires rooting our educational approach in several key principles. These principles include providing globally relevant education, exposing our students to interdisciplinary learning, teaching curricula that is ‘concept-based and competency-driven,’ encouraging student-centered learning, and constantly reinforcing the importance of a growth mindset while using the Government of British Columbia’s Redesigned Curricula.
Because of our thirst for knowledge, the human species is a distinct creation of Mother Nature. When this thirst for knowledge encounters Gurmat (the wisdom of the Gurus), then we obtain the best of both, spiritual and worldly matters. In these individualistic countries, economic issues are not the only problem. A bigger problem is preserving our religious and cultural beliefs, as well as representing our faith on an international level Khalsa School has been fulfilling its role by representing the Sikh faith for the past 3 decades.
Khalsa School’s main goal is to provide its children with not only academic learning but also providing them with the knowledge of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The religious department works tirelessly to ensure that the students of Khalsa School learn about their cultural and religious beliefs, as well as their mother tongue. In addition, Akaal Festival, Kirtan and Tabla Competitions, Turban tying competitions, and several other programs were organized.
Every session starts with Sri Akhand Paath Sahib, for which the seva is mostly done by the students. We also celebrate Gurupurabs every month by organizing kirtan, religious poetry, dhadhi varaan, and several other ways – all of this is done by the students – encouraging them and their peers to learn more about their faith. With the grace of the Gurus, we also organize Amrit Sanchar every month.
Knowing that there are several vices such as addiction, it is important to give the students strong values to keep them away from the wrong company, therefore, avoiding such vices. Khalsa School’s religious department does everything in its power to ensure that students do not indulge in such vices.
It is also important to point out that the Sangat plays a huge part in Khalsa School’s achievements and mission. Khalsa School’s religious department requests the Sikh Sangat to get their children to register for Khalsa School, and by doing so help the Sikh community to grow further.
