It is an honor to serve as the president of West Chester University, one of the nation's top regional comprehensive public universities. In 1893 Lancaster General Hospital was founded “to establish and maintain a hospital for the treatment and care of the sick and suffering, and the training of nurses to be employed in such care.” Lancaster General Hospital was established in 1903, its School of Nursing, which offered a three-year training program. The hospital developed a medical laboratory science in 1952, its first allied health program. It continued to add programs throughout the following decades. In 1995 the nursing and health sciences programs merged to form the Lancaster Institute for Health Education. Finally, in 2001, The Pennsylvania Department of Education granted the Institute the ability to confer degrees. The Institute became the Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences. Interns work with the professional staff of PAFA and participate in the work of a department. They are placed within PAFA based on their interests, educational experience, preferences, and availability. Most PAFA internships are unpaid and are available throughout the year. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) was founded in 1805 by painter and scientist Charles Willson Peale, sculptor William Rush, and other artists and business leaders. They sought to "promote the cultivation of the Fine Arts, in the United States of America, by [...] exciting the efforts of artists, gradually to unfold, enlighten, and invigorate the talents of our Countrymen." The current museum building (Historic Landmark Building) opened in 1876. Designed by the American architects Frank Furness and George W. Hewitt, it has been designated a National Historic Landmark. As such, it is recognized as an essential part of America's and Philadelphia's architectural heritage. The collection is installed in a chronological and thematic format, exploring American art history from the 1760s to the present. The story of Lincoln University dates back to the early years of the nineteenth century and its founders, John Miller Dickey and his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson. The maternal grandfather of John Miller Dickey was a marble merchant in Philadelphia who made contributions to African-Americans' education in that city as early as 1794. Dickey's father was a minister of the Oxford Presbyterian Church. After serving as a missionary and preaching to the slaves in Georgia, John Miller Dickey became pastor of that same church in Oxford, Pennsylvania, in 1832. Sarah Emlen Cresson inherited a long tradition of service and philanthropy through the Society of Friends in Philadelphia. John Miller Dickey was active in the American Colonization Society, and in 1851 took part in the court actions leading to the freeing of a young African-American girl who had been abducted from southern Chester County by slave raiders from Maryland. Simultaneously, having been unsuccessful in his efforts to gain college admission to even the most liberal of schools for a young freedman named James Amos, Dickey himself undertook to prepare the young man for the ministry. In 1893 Lancaster General Hospital was founded “to establish and maintain a hospital for the treatment and care of the sick and suffering, and the training of nurses to be employed in such care.” Lancaster General Hospital established in 1903 its School of Nursing, which offered a three-year training program. The hospital developed a medical laboratory science in 1952, its first allied health program. It continued to add programs throughout the following decades. In 1995 the nursing and health sciences programs merged to form the Lancaster Institute for Health Education. Finally, in 2001, The Pennsylvania Department of Education granted the Institute the ability to confer degrees. The Institute became the Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences. The administration and faculty of Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences believe the individual is unique, adaptable, and possesses intrinsic worth.
