About Me

  1. Westminster International School is an IB World School that offers the IB Primary Years Programme for students from 3 to 12 years of age near Lucca and Florence, Italy. IB World Schools share a common philosophy about the nature of international education, which is expressed in the IB’s Mission statement and Westminster International School’s mission statement. Our community understands the important potential role of cultivating international-mindedness and intercultural awareness. The small classes, assessment for learning, and reporting processes offered at Westminster ensure that our staff understand and regularly report the capabilities and needs of each student within a caring and outwardly focused international learning community. We offer you: Education in a community committed to developing the whole person: the mind, body, and spirit. A quality education taught in classes of no more than 14 students by qualified staff. An opportunity to maximize your child’s academic potential. Westminster encourages the commitment of our community to build a strong and safe learning environment. Westminster gives students the opportunity and responsibility to challenge themselves, to seek and find answers, and to be accountable for excellent social and academic outcomes. Westminster aims to establish a personal set of values by learning experiences that relate to young people’s lives in school, home, and the outside world to help create a more peaceful and sustainable future for our planet and its inhabitants. Westminster aims to meet the diverse needs of students by encouraging creative and critical thinking with challenging and stimulated assessment for learning given with the opportunities offered in the Primary Years Programme. Each student has the opportunity to excel. Westminster ethos values: The individual talents and worth of each student. Thinking and learning as life long capacities. The pursuit of academic excellence. Participation, striving and the achievement of one’s personal best in all endeavors. Openness and creativity. The emotional and social well-being of everyone in its community. Human and cultural diversity. An outward-looking perspective, both nationally and internationally. Being a safe and well-managed school.

  10. The purpose-built school, set in the heart of the Abbey precincts, offers a complete preparatory school boarding education but is tailored precisely to the needs of choristers. The Choir School is all but unique in that it is entirely dedicated to looking after the thirty or so boys who sing in Westminster Abbey as choristers. We offer a highly subsidized, first-class, all-around education within what is a secure, happy, and supportive environment. We aim to provide the best possible experience specifically for choristers, which prepares them for the next stage of their schooling, and indeed for adult life, whatever path they later choose to follow. These website pages can only offer an impression of the school and its activities. If you know of a boy aged between about 7 and 10 who would enjoy singing in this world-famous choir, would be delighted to meet you and to show you the school and something of the life of a Westminster Abbey Chorister. It could be a life-changing experience, as it has been for so many boys in the past. Do please contact us at any time. The school surely has one of the most generous staff to pupil ratios anywhere. With just 30 boys in the school, year groups are very small with normally between only five to seven boys in each. These small groups are taught by subject specialist staff, with excellent facilities, in dedicated curriculum areas. While the teachers are passionate about their subjects, they appreciate entirely the demands made on choristers and we can tailor the school day around the needs of the individual boys. Perhaps even more important is the pastoral care that is possible within so small a community. Boys, their parents, and school staff all work together closely to ensure the happiness and welfare of the boys. The Choir School provides a complete academic education but is tailored directly towards choristers. Classes are arranged by year group – just as in other schools – though they are considerably smaller, with an average class size of six or seven. Such small classes allow an imaginative teaching style and plenty of individual attention. We teach the full range of subjects with excellent modern facilities and subject specialist classrooms. Expectations are high and pupils are routinely able to reach a very high standard at Common Entrance (or occasionally academic scholarship) in preparation for moving on to some of the most academically selective senior schools at the end of Year 8, many with valuable scholarships and bursaries. With such small classes, it is possible to offer considerable support within the normal classroom setting. Where we think that a boy would benefit from a short spell of one-to-one teaching this can usually be arranged with our learning support teacher who visits every week. He can make a general assessment and advise on strategies to adopt in the mainstream classroom. For a more detailed educational assessment, we advise parents to seek an educational psychologist’s report, the cost of which is borne by parents.
  11. We have been recognized as being one of the most rapidly improved primary schools in the country and the most recent Ofsted judgment rated us as a good school with an outstanding provision in the Early Years. Westminster is well resourced and we provide our children with varied, rich experiences that we hope will remain with them for the rest of their lives. At Westminster, we are committed to nurturing our children to excel both in terms of academic and personal development. We enable children to: Be reflective about their own beliefs and have an interest in and respect for different people's faiths, feelings, and values. Recognize the difference between right and wrong, apply this to their own lives and respect the law. Use a range of social skills in different contexts, including socializing with others from different backgrounds. Understand and appreciate the range of different cultures within school and further afield. Understand how they can affect change through an understanding of parliamentary democracy. Participate in a variety of artistic, sporting, and cultural opportunities. This school is committed to developing and maintaining excellent relationships in an open, transparent atmosphere of mutual trust. We provide a stimulating, challenging curriculum within a safe, happy environment. Our children will gain a lifelong love of learning and a thirst for knowledge, enabling them to achieve the brightest of futures, confidently contributing as citizens of the global community We are very proud of the amazing progress the children of our school have made in the last four years, making our school one of the most improved in the country. This is due in very great part to the dedication and hard work of an amazing group of staff, support, and teaching and led by an inspirational and forward-thinking Head Teacher. The learning and teaching environment is getting better all the time with some brilliant facilities already available and more developments to come. There is a brand new uniform and an enormous range of activities outside the classroom for our children and they are responding magnificently to these opportunities. As a governing body, we fully support the Head Teacher and his staff's drive to make Westminster Primary School a world-class school and to fulfill its mission statement, 'Nurturing Minds, Inspiring Excellence'.

  14. Westminster is a leading co-educational school for day and boarding students, offering an exceptional education from Early Learning to Year 12. Supported by an active global community, we incorporate our values of being kind, inclusive, courageous, mindful, and curious into everyday school life, along with the Uniting Church's ethos and international ideals of Round Square. We believe that student wellbeing complements academic success. Our focus is on developing each student's skills and attributes, using creative and critical thinking to help them thrive in an increasingly complex world. We want them to be adventurous beyond the curriculum, inspired to achieve more than they thought possible. Our highly qualified and well-respected teaching staff are dedicated to the growth of every student. Students excel because they feel valued and safe, encouraged to take an appropriate level of risk, and challenge themselves to move forward should they fail. As educators, we guide and facilitate student-learning journeys shaped by teamwork, inquiry, and innovation. Since 1961, the school has built wonderful academic, sporting, artistic, and creative achievements. We have extensive academic and co-curricular programs, impressive grounds, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and outstanding facilities. However, to be at the forefront of education in an ever-changing world, we can never see a standstill. We remain committed to continually improving our educational environment and the technology essential to contemporary learning. We are always ready to showcase what Westminster offers prospective families and believe that an accurate measure of success is to see where our students will be in seven years. What will their life look like then? Are they useful and kind? Are they grateful? If they left school with a sense of confidence without entitlement, a willingness to be involved in things bigger than themselves, a desire to achieve and serve, they have the key ingredients to being happy. Everyday interaction with our Old Scholars suggests we are on the right path to developing respectful and engaged individuals who will use their lifelong love of learning to make a difference. We offer superb facilities set on 23 spacious hectares, more than 40 subject choices in Year 12, around 200 sporting teams, activity clubs and ensembles, outstanding wellbeing programs, and teachers who are leaders in their field. Westminster provides the best resources for exceptional education, giving boys and girls from Early Learning to Year 12 the opportunity to achieve more than they thought possible. Established in 1961, Westminster School is a leading co-educational independent day and Boarding School in Marion, a south-west suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, close to beaches and the city. We are affiliated with the Uniting Church and are active members of Round Square, an international network of innovative schools. Westminster has around 1200 students from Early Learning to Year 12. Westminster School takes a holistic approach to education and aims to develop 'the whole person'. Our success measures reflect this ethos, valuing student achievement broadly in terms of academic results, participation in Arts, Sport, and Service Programs, and development of skills for leadership and good citizenship. Planning for Westminster School began in the late 1950s. People of vision were convinced that Church schools were desirable, and there was an urgent need for a second day and boarding Methodist boys' school in Adelaide. In 1957, land in the southwestern Adelaide suburb of Marion was purchased, and funds continued to be raised over the subsequent years. On 19 June 1960, the Foundation Stone was laid, marking the construction of Westminster's first buildings. The school opened on 7 February 1961, comprising 143 boys – 86 in Years 1 to 7 and 57 in Year 8. One building was used for classrooms, offices, and a standard room for staff. Twenty-eight boarders lived off-campus for the first year at Shaftesbury House in Adelaide. An oval was also prepared, and many trees and shrubs were planted. The Headmaster's residence and sports change rooms completed the first wave of buildings to be erected. After 17 years as a boys' school, coeducation was introduced in 1978 across all year levels, requiring the first accommodating changes to the school's infrastructure. In 1993, girls commenced boarding at Westminster by taking up residence in self-contained home units at the school's southern end. Westminster has steadily grown into a leading co-educational school, offering an extensive curriculum that encourages all students to achieve more than they thought possible. Academically, Westminster students always achieve excellent results. Our Year 12 cohort achieves results that are consistently amongst the best in the state. Today, with a balanced number of boys and girls comprising around 1200 students, the school has grown to a 23 hectare (57 acres) campus with separate areas for an Early Learning Centre, Junior Primary (Reception to Year 2), Middle and Senior Primary (Years 3 to 7) and Senior School (Years 8 to 12). There are four central ovals in the 'green space' of Westminster's grounds, including three soccer pitches and numerous tennis, netball, and basketball courts. Two large venues of note, which have had a significant impact on Westminster life, are the great Sports and Swimming Centre, opened in 2003. Our exceptional 1000-seat Performing Arts theatre opened in 1988 and is still considered one of the best of its type in Australia. In 2013, the new Boarding Precinct opened to incorporate the Girls' Boarding House, the new Boys' Boarding House, and the new Co-educational Recreation Centre. The school also owns 'Glenroy,' a 68-hectare property on the banks of Lake Alexandrina, and the Westventure campsite at Point Sturt, both of which are used extensively in our Outdoor Education program. Even from its earliest years, Westminster has always had a strong international focus to ensure our students have the opportunity to appreciate the world in which we live. Westminster is a member of Round Square, an international association of schools. In 2011, Westminster celebrated its Jubilee of 50 Years, which was captured in the school's history book 'A Venture in Faith' by renowned historian Rob Linn. While the School community enjoyed the year-long celebration to acknowledge milestones and historical events, we are looking forward to what the future holds in terms of advancing learning and student care. Building on our students' and families' expectations, the support of dedicated staff, and the strength of a beautiful community, both past, and present, Westminster will never be at a standstill. At the same time, it remains at the forefront of education and student wellbeing.

Our world-leading research, produced in partnership with global industry and educational institutions, has a real impact on the world around us. The University of Westminster boasts a rich history and has provided students with academic excellence, cultural engagement, and personal enrichment since its inception as The Polytechnic Institution in 1838. Here you can find out a little bit more about our unique heritage and the traditions of excellence that help to shape the University today. The Westminster story began in 1838 when Sir George Cayley opened the Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street in London. In 1881, philanthropist Quintin Hogg bought the Royal Polytechnic Institution building and moved his Young Men's Christian Institute into 309 Regent Street, which soon became the publicly funded Regent Street Polytechnic. Established under the chairmanship of the distinguished scientist Sir George Cayley, The Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street was created in order to demonstrate new technologies and inventions to the public and played a significant role in the popularisation of science. In 1841, the name changed to The Royal Polytechnic Institution when Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, became Patron. During the 1860s, Quintin Hogg, a young businessman, began to provide primary education for some of London's most impoverished children in the slums of Covent Garden. Hogg developed his vision to provide educational, social, sporting, and social opportunities for young working men in The Young Men's Christian Institute. He purchased 309 Regent Street in 1882. New day and evening courses in technical and commercial subjects were introduced to support the expanding economy as London became the world's largest city. The Polytechnic became publicly funded in 1891 and was re-named the Regent Street Polytechnic. During the First and Second, World Wars courses were directed towards the war effort, taking the lead in retraining the large numbers of disabled soldiers returning from war. The 1960s saw a significant new expansion scheme for the Regent Street Polytechnic, transforming it into a multi-site institution. A new site in Marylebone Road was to house a college of architecture and advanced building technologies. A second new site in New Cavendish Street was to house engineering and science. By the time the new buildings had been completed, the Regent Street Polytechnic had been merged with Holborn College of Law, Languages, and Commerce to form the Polytechnic of Central London (known as PCL). The newly formed Students' Union played host to several leading bands of the era, including Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Pink Floyd also formed at the Polytechnic at this time. PCL was one of 30 new polytechnics formed in 1970, awarding degrees from the Council of National Academic Awards. Throughout the next 20 years, PCL continued its commitment to part-time and evening education and pioneered an extensive program of short courses for mid-career professionals that attracted more than 20,000 students a year. The University of Westminster Archive has been running an Oral History Project since 2010 recording memories of the Regent Street Polytechnic and Polytechnic of Central London. Oral history is composed of spoken testimony, stories, and experience and is a useful way of capturing individual understandings and perspectives of the recent past. Although official documents provide a vital window into the past, oral history often provides a much richer picture of what life was like and what people thought. The University of Westminster had undergone many significant changes in its lifetime from the Regent Street Polytechnic days when people took courses in mainly vocational subjects, to the politically charged days of the Polytechnic of Central London when student protests were commonplace. You will find excerpts from some of the many audio interviews we have in our collection on this website. The full interviews are available to listen to my appointment in our archive reading room. 16. Westminster is one of the UK’s leading academic institutions and is the only ancient London school to occupy its original site, immediately next to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. Westminster is a school for both day and boarding pupils it is a busy, passionate and purposeful place where independent thinking is encouraged and excellence is nurtured. Our ethos resides in the enduring values of the liberal tradition, reflected in the 1560 Charter of Westminster’s Elizabethan foundation where it states that our pupils should be “liberally instructed in good books to the greater honor of the state.” This outward-looking approach to education defines the School today. We are a place that embraces learning, encourages deep thinking, and takes great pleasure in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding but, most importantly, we want to encourage our boys and girls to use their skills and intelligence to benefit society. We seek to encourage young people to engage in loyal dissent. Whilst our pupils are loyal to the principles of a liberal education, respectful of genuine scholarship, and appreciative of the learning process, they are equally prepared to challenge, question, and explore the content of that learning, pushing boundaries and overturning expectations. Westminster is an ancient boarding and day school with a unique sense of place. Its origins can be traced to a charity school established by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of St. Peter in Westminster and it is more than likely that this spiritual and educational tradition goes back as far as 960 AD. Westminster is no ordinary place. It is a highly academic school where individual and corporate excellence is expected and promoted. Central to Westminster’s ethos is the dialogue between teachers and their pupils, whether in the classroom or tutorials. This inspires a passion for the subject, conveys knowledge, and develops the skills of rational, independent thought, and liberation from dogma, prejudice, or unthinking conformity. Westminster is one of the foremost centers of academic excellence in the country, and its pupils achieve exceptional public examination results, and entrance to the top universities worldwide. This success is a result of pupils’ enjoyment of academic inquiry, debate, and searches for explanation well beyond any published syllabus. The desired environment is happy, busy, and purposeful for the pupils intellectually, socially, ethically, and politically engaged, with plenty of opportunities to develop initiatives and to articulate and defend their views. The broader ethos of the School resides in the enduring values of the liberal tradition reflected in the 1560 Charter of Westminster’s Elizabethan foundation, where it is stated that ‘the youth which is growing to manhood, like tender shoots in the wood of our state, shall be liberally instructed in good books to the greater honor of the state’. While academic and cultural attainments are highly prized, the tradition is fully committed also to the nurture of each pupil’s spiritual, moral, emotional, and physical development and well-being – with a particular emphasis on drawing out individual talent wherever it lies – and to the preparation of responsible young people for fulfilled private and public lives beyond School.
  17. The Westminster School is a K-12 classical Christian school and is a ministry of Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church (PCA). Founded in 1999 as Oak Mountain Classical School, the school has grown to an enrollment of more than 500 students. The first graduating class matriculated in 2006. Westminster's leadership is committed to a thoroughly Christian approach that includes shepherding the heart, training the mind, and nurturing the soul. Whether it be through the curriculum, on the playground, or in day-to-day relationships, we want the gospel of Christ to be preeminent in our community. Westminster is equally committed to academic quality. We like to say it like this: discipleship and scholarship without one compromising the other. While the curriculum and pace are challenging, we are not a school targeting the academically elite. Mortimer Adler, the American philosopher, educator, and author, said the best education for the best is the best education for all. We are convinced a student of average aptitude who is diligent and focused can complete our academic program. Nevertheless, we understand that an excellent education, just as an excellent sports program, assumes a healthy measure of rigor and commitment. We hold the conviction that learning does not only involve hard work but also rewarding work. We are well aware that rigor and commitment are not very popular words in modern culture. We know there is a general fear of pushing students or expecting too much of them. However, at Westminster, we do not fear calling students to a higher standard. First, because all children are "fearfully and wonderfully made" in God's image, we believe, as Richard Weaver argued, that "while they are prone to err they are capable of glory." Second, we believe in grace. Thus, every time we push students to greater heights, we point them to Christ. Students do not need to run from the expectation to do what is extraordinary. Nor do we need to fear they might crumble beneath the weight of higher expectations. Because in the end, they will not be judged by their accomplishments but by their longing and their hope for the accomplishments of Christ. Our Values: Westminster believes. We are biblically driven, gospel-centered, grace saturated, and theologically reformed. Westminster helps. We endeavor to help Christian parents fulfill their God-ordained obligation to educate their children and nurture them to full maturity in the gospel. Westminster connects. We foster relationships that reflect a united body of Christ as we celebrate diverse gifts, challenges, and victories together. Westminster loves. We strive to demonstrate Christ's love for our students by the way we teach, serve, and live from a whole heart. Westminster teaches. We embrace the classical liberal arts concepts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric to cultivate wisdom, virtue, and eloquence in our students. Westminster teaches. We embrace the classical liberal arts concepts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric to cultivate wisdom, virtue, and eloquence in our students. Westminster builds. We seek the Kingdom of God's progress in this world through the pursuit of beauty in all things with a spirit of truth and love. Our goal is to engage the whole person to equip a child with wisdom and eloquence to be an effective leader and life-long learner. We hold the conviction that both of these qualities are an integral part of our fundamental role as human beings made in the image of God.
  18. We believe that God is the creator and sustainer of all things and that Jesus Christ is the only redeemer of our fallen world. As a covenantal school, we are committed in partnership with home and Church to a quality education based on these truths. Our curriculum provides an academically diverse student body with knowledge in the traditional liberal arts and the skills and wisdom needed to apply that knowledge. Teachers are committed to designing and employing creative teaching strategies to meet this goal and encourage the development and application of Christian character in our students. At Westminster, the highest quality academics are dynamically integrated with biblical truth, resulting in a world-class education that yields graduates prepared to make a profound difference in the world for Christ. Westminster Christian Academy honors Jesus Christ by providing an excellent education, rooted in biblical truth as interpreted by the Westminster Confession of Faith, for Christian parents' children. Faculty and staff enable students to discover and embrace a biblical view of the world and integrate that view into every life area. Knowing God, loving His Word, and living for Him is at the heart of the Westminster experience. Students learn that "all truth is God's truth" in every aspect of life in and outside of school (e.g., in the Bible classroom, on the stage, on the athletic field, and in the guidance counselor's office). Students are challenged to live out their faith in their relationships, character, and service for others. Westminster's doors are open to all Christian families in the St. Louis region who desire a Christ-centered secondary school experience for their children. Academic programs are designed to meet the learning needs of all children in the family, and financial aid is available to help qualified families who cannot pay the full cost of tuition. Families representing all of God's people ("every tribe and language and people and nation") have an equal opportunity to a place at Westminster. Westminster affirms that it was God's intent for the world to be a diverse place (Genesis 9:19). We also believe God intends that his Church, in the name of Christ, would include people from every nation, tribe, people, and language (Revelation 7:9). Therefore, Westminster will strive to be a place where diversity is pursued, embraced, and valued. Diversity means "comprised of people from differing cultural and ethnic backgrounds." Westminster affirms this definition of diversity and broadens it to include diversity in our students' learning styles, denominations, and socioeconomic statuses. Westminster's curriculum and programs are designed to integrate biblical truth into every aspect of the school experience. Students and families should prayerfully consider the curricular and co-curricular choices available at Westminster and make decisions to maximize opportunities to learn and grow in knowledge, wisdom, and grace. We encourage parents and students to carefully and jointly consider the program of instruction and courses that will comprise a student's academic life at Westminster.
  19. Westminster School, in Simsbury, Connecticut, enjoys a reputation as one of the finest college-preparatory schools and certainly one of the very top small boarding schools in the country. The challenging academic program, grounded in the liberal arts tradition, prepares boys and girls in grades 9-12 and postgraduate for academic success and the rigors of college while cultivating in them a love of learning that becomes a lifelong habit. Westminster School is a diverse, close-knit community of 95 faculty and 390 students (70% boarding, 30% day students) from across the country and worldwide. Nearly one-third of the students receive financial aid from the $5.1 million awarded each year. Westminster School, on its 200-acre north-central Connecticut campus, is a place where scholarship, citizenship, sportsmanship, and leadership thrive. Set in a small New England town north of Hartford, Westminster is walking distance from Simsbury's vibrant town center. It is convenient to both New York City and Boston and is just twenty minutes from Bradley International Airport. Since its founding in 1888, Westminster School has been committed to a challenging, college-preparatory experience. Our core values - community, character, balance, involvement - and our commitment to excellence are the school's lifeblood. Our motto – virtute et numine – by grit and grace – defines and distinguishes the experience, our community, and our alumni. Our Core Values Westminster is a small, caring, cohesive, residential community firmly committed to the "common good." In addition to prizing intellect, Westminster insists upon and fosters integrity, high ethical standards, leadership, mutual respect, tolerance, and teamwork. Westminster maintains, through high expectations and a structured environment, a balance among challenging academic, athletic, artistic, and extracurricular programs. Westminster believes that students learn best through active participation in all aspects of school life. As an independent, coeducational secondary school, we demand high academic standards, participation in the arts and athletics, and a strong commitment to service for others. The unique combination of grit and grace is what makes Westminster people successful, on the Hill and beyond. When you spend time with our students, faculty, alumni, staff, or current or past parents, uniformly, they highlight the defining personal qualities of our school motto of Grit & Grace and our core values of community, character, balance, and involvement. Westminster School makes a difference because the people who comprise our school community — including students from across this country and around the world — continue to make a difference in their endeavors well after graduation. The best schools create an environment that encourages students to flourish. In this respect, at just 390 students, our school size offers a considerable advantage over many of our peer schools because our students and faculty know each other. A student who enjoys a relationship with an algebra teacher that extends beyond the classroom, perhaps to the lacrosse field, to the dormitory corridor, or even to the family-style lunch table, is more likely to find the comfort and the accompanying resolve to follow up with that teacher on a complicated mathematics problem. Similarly, a student considering a controversial concept in a history class might find the opportunity to return to that classroom debate with friends over a meal. Our shared dedication to the people who comprise our school community defines us. As a sensitive, caring, tolerant, and nurturing community, we encourage young people to take risks and, in the process, to grow. At Westminster, we aspire to an extraordinarily ambitious commitment to education, a commitment that rests on the goodwill and enthusiastic participation of our entire school community. What better setting could a student find to pursue a passion for living a meaningful and rewarding life? The Westminster community inspires young men and women of promise to cultivate a passion for learning, explore and develop diverse talents in a balanced program, reach well beyond the ordinary, live with intelligence and character, and commit to a life of service beyond self. Derived from our motto virtute et numine, "grit and grace" encapsulates in one phrase our culture, our promise, a commitment to ourselves and others. Westminster students and faculty strive for excellence – and humility, personal success – and service to others, lofty goals – and common human decency. Blending the ethics of grace with grit's competition and effort, Westminster encourages its students to test the boundaries of their abilities, try something new, and win and lose with grace.
