The story of Lincoln University dates back to the early years of the nineteenth century and its founders, John Miller Dickey and his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson. The maternal grandfather of John Miller Dickey was a marble merchant in Philadelphia who made contributions to African-Americans' education in that city as early as 1794. Dickey's father was a minister of the Oxford Presbyterian Church. After serving as a missionary and preaching to the slaves in Georgia, John Miller Dickey became pastor of that same church in Oxford, Pennsylvania, in 1832. Sarah Emlen Cresson inherited a long tradition of service and philanthropy through the Society of Friends in Philadelphia. John Miller Dickey was active in the American Colonization Society, and in 1851 took part in the court actions leading to the freeing of a young African-American girl who had been abducted from southern Chester County by slave raiders from Maryland. Simultaneously, having been unsuccessful in his efforts to gain college admission to even the most liberal of schools for a young freedman named James Amos, Dickey himself undertook to prepare the young man for the ministry.

Lincoln University was founded in 1866 by the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantries and their white officers, for the unique benefit of freed African Americans. Today, Lincoln University's role in the education of Missourians and others and its service to stakeholders throughout the state, the nation, and across the globe is well recognized. Lincoln University continues to serve the needs of its diverse student body through a tradition of offering innovative programs that makes the college experience special. At the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. The following stipulations were set for the school: The institution shall be designed for the unique benefit of the freed African-Americans. It shall be located in the state of Missouri. Its fundamental idea shall be to combine study and labor. Members of the 62nd Colored Infantry contributed $5,000. This was supplemented by approximately $1,400, given by the 65th Colored Infantry. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was formally established under an organization committee. By June of the same year, it incorporated, and the committee became a Board of Trustees. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant in the 62nd Infantry, was named the first principal of Lincoln Institute. On September 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class in an old frame building in Jefferson City. In 1870, the school began to receive aid from the state of Missouri for teacher training. In 1871, Lincoln Institute moved to the present campus. College-level work was added to the curriculum in 1877, and passage of the Normal School Law permitted Lincoln graduates to teach for life in Missouri without further examination. Lincoln Institute formally became a state institution in 1879 with the deeding of the property to the state. Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Lincoln became a land grant institution, and the following year industrial and agricultural courses were added to the curriculum. In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill introduced by Walthall M. Moore, the first black American to serve in that body, which changed the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln University and created a Board of Curators to govern the University. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited the high school division in 1925, the teacher-training program in 1926, and the four-year college of arts and sciences in 1934. Graduate instruction was begun in the summer session of 1940, with majors in education and history and minors in English, history, and sociology. A School of Journalism was established in February 1942. In 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. Lincoln University responded by opening its doors to all applicably meeting its entrance criteria. Today, Lincoln University serves a diverse clientele, both residential and non-residential, engages in a variety of research projects, and offers numerous public service programs in addition to providing an array of academic programs.

We have seen many things come and go in that time, but we have never stopped providing first-class education, turning out graduates of the highest caliber who go out into the world and change people's lives for the better. We began life in 1862 as an Anglican teacher training college for women. To mark our centenary in 1962, our name was changed to Bishop Grosseteste College in honor of Robert Grosseteste, the thirteenth-century scientist, philosopher, educator, and Bishop of Lincoln. Subsequent name changes in 2006 and 2012 saw our name changed to Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln before we finally became Bishop Grosseteste University. In recent years we have undergone an explosion of growth, expanding, and developing our portfolio of courses into more exciting new areas. We still consider ourselves experts in education – we have been doing it for over 150 years after all – but our teaching courses now sit alongside an exciting range of other subjects. 19. Our nation's beloved 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was a native of neighboring Kentucky. But you might not know that he envisioned "a great university for the people of this area" here in the Cumberland Gap. One hundred forty years later, Lincoln Memorial University is the heir of that vision, and we are very proud to wear his name and embrace his legacy. Nestled in the pristine Appalachian Mountain range, LMU's main campus in Harrogate, Tennessee, is scenic and historic. About 55 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee, we are perfectly poised to offer a liberal arts education. A main campus full of activities for residential students and 11 extended sites in surrounding areas, LMU provides educational experiences to suit your life. With over 30 academic majors ranging from accounting to wildlife and fisheries biology, success is within your reach. Most important, LMU is a close-knit community filled with people who care. Students can expect personal attention with an average class size of 14. At LMU, students build relationships that last, and they learn lessons they will carry for life. Lincoln Memorial University is a comprehensive values-based learning community dedicated to providing quality educational experiences at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. The University strives to give students a foundation for a more productive life by upholding the principles of Abraham Lincoln's life: a dedication to individual liberty, responsibility, and improve respect for citizenship, recognition of the intrinsic value of high moral and ethical standards, and a belief in a personal God. While primarily committed to teaching, the University supports research and service. The University's curriculum and commitment to quality instruction at every level are based on the beliefs that graduates must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in an era of rapidly and continuously expanding communication technology, must have an appreciable depth of learning in a field of knowledge, must appreciate and understand the various ways by which we come to know ourselves and the world around us, and must be able to exercise informed judgments. Applying to college should not be a chore. We have gathered all the information we think you will need and put it right here at your fingertips. It is easy. Let us get started. First, you should know that Lincoln Memorial University offers relevant and diverse curricula that can be tailored to your individual goals and personal growth. Nearly 90 percent of LMU undergraduate students receive some financial assistance through a combination of scholarships and need-based financial aid. Financial aid programs are designed to meet the difference between the family's expected contribution and the cost of attending LMU. The specific type of financial aid awarded to a student depends on the individual's demonstrated financial need and academic qualifications. The University believes that one of the major cornerstones of meaningful existence is service to humanity. By making educational, service, and research opportunities available to students, Lincoln Memorial University seeks to improve life for the students it serves. While serving students from throughout the state, nation, and many other countries, the University retains a commitment to enrich people and communities' lives in the Appalachian region. 23. We have been here in the historic heart of Lincoln for over 150 years, a beautifully green and pleasant campus just a few minute's walk from Lincoln Cathedral, Castle, and the old Roman city. We currently educate over 2,000 students in subjects ranging from drama to psychology foundation degree to Ph.D., and much more in between. We keep adding to our campus to ensure that our students have a fulfilling learning experience and a rewarding university life. In 2013 we refurbished our student accommodation, built a brand new hall of residence, enhanced the BGU student experience, and created a real home away from home. We also totally refurbished our library building (doubling its size) and built Refectory, our new dining facility. Our Vision Bishop Grosseteste University is committed to being a leader in learning, to inspire excellence, and to enrich the lives of its students and staff and the communities it serves. Bishop Grosseteste University's governance structure has been developed to uphold the fundamental values and practices on which the effective governance of UK HEIs is based. Like the majority of higher education institutions, Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is a public body. As such, we are required to be open and transparent in our conduct and subject to the requirements of regulatory and funding bodies and the Committee of University Chairs Higher Education Code of Governance. Bishop Grosseteste University's commitment to equality and diversity is manifest in all our work. The first of our values as a Church University – "We are committed to being an inclusive community which fosters an ethos of mutual respect, trust, and care. " As a public body, BGU is subject to specific duties outlined in the Equality Act 2010, which requires public bodies to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people from different groups. The Act also extends the characteristics protected by law resulting in nine protected groups. So discrimination is now unlawful on the grounds of sex, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, and age. Higher Education Institutions are required to publish objectives and information explaining how they will meet this duty. The Learning Development team focuses primarily on enhancing the student experience. Tutors within Learning Development can offer advice and guidance to students with their academic literacies and study skills. Students can access this service through one-to-one appointments, group workshops, or by downloading our bespoke study skills resources from Blackboard. Learning Development advice and guidance are also available to staff to enhance their skills, supporting students' academic progress. The Student Engagement Facilitator works with staff and students to help shape the learning experiences of both. Students enrolled at Bishop Grosseteste are equal partners in the University, and as such, are encouraged to make changes that will improve their time here. CELT is currently running several innovative projects as part of the wider Students Create Change agenda. CELT also works closely with other services across the University including Library Services and Careers, Employability and Enterprise. The center comprises a multi-disciplinary team that collectively has a wealth of experience and knowledge of education, teaching, learning, and assessment, as well as staff development and student engagement. CELT also contributes to the University by offering staff development programs. CELT offers a program of events and conferences for academic staff designed to enhance professional practice. Staff is encouraged to engage with staff development events. CELT delivers the Bishop Grosseteste University PGCHE. This newly introduced qualification has been submitted for accreditation by the Higher Education Academy and, once accredited, will confer Fellow status of the HEA upon completion. CELT also delivers the internal HEA recognition scheme (PAT), which confers Associate Fellow, Fellow or Senior Fellow on successful completion. Bishop Grosseteste University is committed to enhancing students' employability prospects. CELT is pivotal in advancing the development of those graduate skills necessary for students entering the job market. The League of Extraordinary Graduates took place in March 2017 at BGU.
