Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University opened its doors to women and men in 1975 with two pioneering colleges, the College of Medicine and the College of Architecture. Almost four decades later, this academic institution has grown into a leading research university with 21 colleges spread throughout the Eastern Province and a student population of over 45,000.

As a preeminent research-based institution, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University continues to grow and develop, continually assessing and improving its curricula and expanding its academic capabilities in all disciplines, while at the same time engaging the public in addressing environmental and community challenges.

  • Create and sustain relevant, high-quality instruction that fulfills the Kingdom's needs and carry out research and services in the professional fields that are the Kingdom's developmental priorities.
  • Build a new organizational quality management system appropriate for a large and complex institute as Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University.
  • Instill and develop a quality culture at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, where all professional activities are recognized, where accountability is ensured, and where Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University's stated objectives are achieved at all levels and throughout all departments.
  • Expand the opportunities for students to learn and engage at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University to support the realization of their academic and career aspirations.
  • Provide access and support for all qualified students while establishing a vibrant and interactive campus environment that leads to an engaging university community that fosters loyalty to Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University.
  • Create state-of-the-art libraries and related learning resources that utilize all available technology.
  • Develop, expand, and sustain modern academic facilities, equipment, and related infrastructure to serve the requirements of quality instruction, learning, research, service programs, campus life, and community outreach.
  • Develop and implement a robust financial planning and management system to serve all academic programs, administrative support, and services units.
  • Increase human resource capacities to accomplish teaching, research, and service missions more effectively.
  • Create a culture of intellectual curiosity and research of the highest ethical standards and accomplishment that effectively serves the University's advancement, health, prosperity, and community.
  • Develop entrepreneurial initiatives and business partnerships with the community to expand private sector joint investments for future development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously assess, improve, and enhance the academic programs throughout the University.
  • Develop professional skills, both theoretical and practical, to meet the requirements of the community.
  • Conduct scientific and applied research to address the environmental and societal challenges that come with rapid growth and development.
  • Encourage and support scientific research in all disciplines throughout the University.
  • Present frequent workshops and seminars for the public that will address topics of interest for the local community.
  • Train, develop, and refine students' scientific skills through the numerous centers at the university and local hospitals.
  • Provide a premium and professional medical services to the community.
  • Encourage faculty, staff, and students to write and publish their academic work.
  • Actively participate and contribute to the growth and development of the Kingdom.

This is the highest and ultimate authority in all matters and issues related to the University. The Minister of Higher Education heads it. It comprises the University President (as Vice President), the University Vice Presidents, the Secretary-General of the Higher Education Council, the college deans, and three persons with experience to be appointed by His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education for a three-year term (under article 19 of the Higher Education and Universities Council Regulation).
