Hokkaido International School opened as Hokkaido American School in 1958 when the local US military school, Camp Crawford U. S. Army Dependents School, closed. The school started with 12 children from five missionary families who were left without a school. In 1962, the school changed its name to its present name, Hokkaido International School, and moved to its new campus in Fukuzumi. Students selected the school mascot, the Husky, as well as the school colors, Kelly green, and white. The gymnasium was completed in 1965 with help from the US government. In 1968, the Hokkaido Government granted accreditation, and by the early 1970s enrollment was up to 70 students. In …

There are many countries, with different cultures and customs, languages and values, which exist in this world. Children will live in this world where they will be required to understand each other’s values, respect them and look for ways to live together and collaborate. We would like to raise Japanese children as “Global Citizens”. To achieve this goal, we believe that our children should develop an appreciation of their Japanese identity, strong academic skills, language skills in both Japanese and English, information handling skills, and understanding and respect for other cultures. At Horizon Sendai Primary School, we provide an exceptional educational environme…

As the global IT boom reached Japanese shores, Indian IT professionals led the charge. It was 1999 and nearly 17,000 of them had relocated here. But because of the high cost of living and even higher tuition costs at local international schools, most of these young engineers left behind their wives and children in India. A few lucky ones enrolled their children in local Japanese and international schools, but many grappled with a language handicap or missed an entire school year when relocating back to India. The time was ripe for an Indian school. And so, on August 15, 2004, India International School in Japan opened its doors with a student body of 27. Today, that …

Late in 1957, when the American School located on the Botanical Gardens Army Base closed, missionary families were forced to consider alternative options to educate their children. Doug Muir, the son of missionaries living in Kyoto, became one of the first students of what is now called Kyoto International School. Doug’s mother decided to home school him, his best friend, along with one other student. Classes were held in a vacant bedroom in their family home. The following year, their large 2 story house on Ichijo-Dori was turned into a day school (Kyoto Christian Day School) and a full-time teacher was hired. By the 1958/59 school year 28 students were enrolled between …

Founded by parents and community members in borrowed facilities in 1964, NIS opened doors in our permanent home in Moriyama in 1968. In the 54 years since, much has changed - not only in the field of education but also here in the Chubu region. While NIS has kept pace with these changes, it is our founding philosophy that has remained a guiding constant. As a not-for-profit institution, NIS was formed with only one purpose – to meet the needs of the community we serve. This enduring truth remains with us as important today as we strive to cater to the increasingly diverse international community of Nagoya. Since opening our doors in 1964, NIS has served the needs of tho…

The world is changing rapidly, and we are experiencing what many have called the fourth industrial revolution. This revolution is being led by innovations such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and big data. These innovations are consuming the world. Rapid globalization has also created more and more complicated international problems. In a further 20 years, the world will be beyond our imagination, and our children will need the abilities and skills to solve problems without clear answers. Although our world is rapidly changing, education at Japanese schools has changed very little in 50 years. That is one of the reasons we decided to open an internat…

At KIU Academy, we believe that a western-style education that develops reasoning skills in conjunction with language skills is essential for those intending to survive and thrive in an international environment. However, the goal of developing effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that transcend cultural differences poses a great challenge for the individual. Over the years, KIU Academy has helped many of its graduates obtain and polish these important skills. At the same time, we also believe that it is crucial that our graduates also learn to be independent thinkers and self-directed learners. As a result, many of our graduates have b…
