Little Yarra Steiner School is co-educational and based on Christian spiritual principles as given by the Austrian philosopher and educationalist Dr. Rudolf Steiner. By these principles teachers strive in freedom to create the physical and educational environment that can best help the incarnating child to develop such qualities of will, feeling, and thought as will lead them to fulfill their earthly destiny with dignity and confidence. The location for Little Yarra Steiner School began with a gift: in 1986, while the school’s first Kindergarten and Prep group were getting underway in temporary premises in Wesburn, local farmer, Alan Earle, agreed to have the school built on his property along the Little Yarra River. When Alan’s land proved too flood-prone for major building development, he gave his land to be sold so that a more suitable property could be bought for the school. Alan’s gift enabled the purchase of the current property and the school in 1989 was able to move from a small Public Hall to its new home, a beautiful 60-acre block, also along the Little Yarra River, two kilometers south of the center of Yarra Junction. The beauty, central location, and generous size of the property, which was more than what was needed for the school, gave rise to an initial broader long term vision which included a bio-dynamic farm and other cultural initiatives such as a performing arts center, recording studio, artisans workshops, adult education facilities and similar ventures complementary to the school and forming part of a larger spiritually and culturally inspired center arising over time within a supportive community. Since moving to Little Yarra Road with a handful of children in 1989, the school has grown to over 300 students, ranging from Kindergarten through to class 12. With the inception of the first class 12 in 2004, the school has been able to offer an exciting program that embraces Steiner’s indications within the framework of the VCE, as well as an optional Class 12 project successfully pioneered within the Steiner School movement overseas and in Australia. By the time they graduate, they develop the confidence to enjoy their time in the pool. Swimming or spending time in the pool helps children during their early developmental years. Our professional coaches lead the children's swimming classes in the heated pool all year round. We have three buses at the kindergarten which pick up the children in the morning and take them home after kindergarten finishes. The buses take various routes in Tsukuba and Tsuchiura Cities. Our experienced drivers and friendly teachers take all necessary precautions to ensure the children have a safe and comfortable trip. All the children at our Kindergarten wear uniforms. Navy blue is the base color of the elegantly designed clothes. Skirts and trousers are worn all year round. By providing children with various activities which elicit their interest and spontaneity, the Regular Course offers child-care which aims to raise “children who can spontaneously engage in activities.” Katoh Kindergarten also provides an open child-care program by using an open space where the walls of the nursery room are taken down. By taking down the walls, we employ a variety of activities beyond classes and grades. Katoh Kindergarten established a child-raising circle to alleviate parent’s anxiety regarding child-care and to support them by providing an “opportunity” for 0-3 years old children and their parents to meet casually and exchange their concerns. Katoh Kindergarten staff introduces various activities that parents and children can enjoy together. Activities will be planned according to the age group. Katoh Kindergarten provides school bus transportation for students. Five red buses operate on ten different routes to ensure that children can get to the school and back safely and comfortably. Unfortunately, the environment surrounding children has become increasingly dangerous. At Katoh Kindergarten, to prevent suspicious individuals from entering the premises, we are asking parents to wear their parents’ tags when they come to school. Katoh Kindergarten organizes soccer and rhythmic gymnastics classes in response to the parent’s request to provide their children with more full-scale physical activities after school. Furthermore, we provide violin classes in aiming for the further enrichment of aesthetic appreciation in children as well as intelligence and physical abilities. The Immersion Course is one form of bilingual education, which is designed to enable children to acquire English naturally by being immersed in an English environment just as Japanese children acquire the Japanese language. At Katoh Kindergarten Immersion Program, 50% or more of a school day is conducted in English. Principally, if the morning activities are conducted in English, the afternoon activities are in Japanese. Native English-speaking teachers and Japanese teachers collaboratively bring up children. By continuing every day’s activities in the kindergarten, children will rapidly acquire English necessary for their life. The Norwegian Kindergarten in London is an educational opportunity for children from two and a half years old to school age. This applies either for starting English school at five years old or starting at The Norwegian School at six years old. We aim to be the natural choice for Norwegian families who move to London. We emphasize both the Norwegian and English language and culture. Each class in the Kindergarten will have at least one English-speaking and one Scandinavian-speaking member of staff. This helps the children to learn English from the start. We also aim to give the older children activities which prepare them for starting school. In addition, we can give necessary language training before starting school. Our children´s social and language skills reach a high level of development over the year. A place must be taken up no later than four weeks after the place is available. Payment is required for the entire period from the day that the place has been allocated. The Kindergarten shall meet the children with trust and respect, and acknowledge the intrinsic value of childhood. They shall contribute to well-being and joy in play and learning, and shall be a challenging and safe place for community life and friendship. The Kindergarten shall promote democracy and equality and counteract all forms of discrimination. Kindergarten has fewer children per adult than the English statutory regulations demand. This means that we can be run with a Norwegian approach. The children play outside every day, and unless exceptional conditions prevent this. There is also an outing once a week where we use playgrounds and parks nearby. The organization of the Kindergarten will vary from year to year depending on how many children join. Regardless of the way it is organized in any year, each class will always have a pre-school teacher or a person with similar qualifications who is responsible for the educational plans. The Kindergarten is run in the same building as the Norwegian School, which is very convenient for families with children both in the School and in the Kindergarten. Equally, the transition to school is easy as the children already know the building, as well as children and staff members at the School. The Norwegian Kindergarten in London is a registered English charity. The Board of Governors is the supreme body representing the owners. The Board is responsible for running The Norwegian Kindergarten in London by English and UK law. The Board is responsible for the overall financial situation at any time and to plan, implement and report financial plans, annual budget, and accounts to UK authorities. The Board is the employer for all positions. The Board shall ensure that The Norwegian Kindergarten in London continues to develop as an attractive educational opportunity and will make long-term plans for the future of the kindergarten. The keeping children safe in education statutory guidance (September 2016) states that safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone´s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families and carers has a role to play in safeguarding children. This means that they should consider, at all times, what is in the best interest of the child. Storybooks, play equipment, and stationery are stored at a height convenient for children to easily access them. Our kindergarten has its very own playground that is equipped with slides, swings, and other play equipment. Special rubber mats have been installed around all outdoor play equipment to ensure the safety of children and to prevent serious injury. In addition, whenever children use the playground they are supervised by the teachers. The school will hold two meetings per year. These meetings will allow parents to speak directly with their child's teacher, and discuss their development throughout the school year thus far. It will also be a chance to ask questions or voice concerns directly to teachers. The school will organize school outings periodically. A notification letter will be sent home with details of the planned excursion. Parents are welcome to assist and join us on these outings. However, such trips will be canceled at short notice should there be a change in the weather. We encourage you to make an appointment with the class teacher to discuss your child's progress or any school-related problems. Parents are requested not to discuss such matters with the teacher when children are entering or leaving the school. To notify the school if your family has moved to a new address. It would help us contact you in an emergency. Birthday parties can be held during school hours only. If you intend to celebrate your child's birthday at school, it is best to inform the class teacher at least a week in advance. It is advisable to inform the school if your child needs special attention or if he/she is allergic to any medicine or food. If your child is sick, do be considerate and ensure that he/she has completely recovered and is past the infectious period before sending him/her to school.
