      2. Established in 1888 as Salem College, Salem University has a tradition of academic excellence and innovation. The beautiful 100-acre campus is nestled in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. The campus offers student housing and traditional campus clubs and activities. The goals of the University are to: Provide practical educational experiences. Design and maintain a unique environment conducive to developing an international citizen. Select, support, and develop human resources consistent with excellence in leadership, scholarship, and work and life skills. Improve student learning, facilitate improvements in teaching, and corroborate institutional effectiveness. The mission of the University is to prepare global citizens with broad knowledge, marketable professional skills, and the ability to make decisions with integrity and an international perspective. We are prepared to help you apply for federal aid, research scholarship, and private aid options, and make use of military benefits if you're eligible for them. We're here to help make earning your degree affordable. We believe that higher education is one of the most significant investments you can make in yourself. We also appreciate that meeting the costs of that investment can be a daunting prospect. That's why our Financial Aid department is focused on helping you make the process of paying for your education as straightforward and supportive as possible. Salem University is dedicated to supporting a community of connections as well as higher learning. Salem College received its charter from the State of West Virginia in December 1888 and offered its first term of instruction beginning in April 1889. Individuals in the Salem, West Virginia community founded Salem College to provide an affordable baccalaureate curriculum grounded in the liberal arts to prepare students for occupations, professional and advanced studies, and a Normal curriculum to prepare educators. While the institution was closely associated with the Seventh Day Baptist Church, Salem College was not sectarian in its teaching or administration. Salem College was a small institution for its first seventy-five years, drawing students mainly from a limited area. The campus comprised several buildings facing Main Street in town. In the 1960s, Salem College expanded its physical facilities into a newer and more modern campus called the "Valley of Learning." This is the location of the present campus. In 1989 Salem College and the Teikyo University Foundation entered into a partnership to create an international learning center, Salem-Teikyo University. As S-TU, the institution charted a new course for itself. While retaining the tradition of small classes and providing extra attention to students, the University sought ways to offer an international and intercultural educational experience. The University encouraged all faculty, students, and staff in the process of implementing its international focus. In 2000, the institution's name was changed to Salem International University to reflect an emphasis on global learning. This continued through a relationship developed in July of 2001 with Informatics Holdings Ltd. is a leader in using technology to reach students through online education. In June 2005, Salem Education LLC assumed control of Salem and began strengthening its programs and operations, developing new programs of study, and improving the University's facilities and infrastructure. Today Salem University offers undergraduate degrees in Biology, Business Administration, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Education, Information Technology, and Nursing. Graduate degrees and certificates are offered in Business Administration, Education, and Nursing. Programs and courses are offered on campus, via distance education, and blended. In 2017, the name of the institution was changed to Salem University. This change reflects a desire by multiple constituencies, including students, alumni, and community members, to honor our West Virginia roots, history, and heritage. However, this change shall not be interpreted as indicating any diminishment of our commitment to preparing global citizens with broad knowledge, marketable professional skills, and the ability to make decisions with integrity and an international perspective. Salem continues to serve the educational needs of an increasingly diverse, global citizenry and welcomes students from around the world to join our community of scholars. View full university
      3. Salem College traces its history to April 1772, when the Moravian community of Salem, North Carolina, founded a school for girls and appointed Sister Elisabeth Oesterlein as its first teacher. Under the supervision of Salem's boards and thanks to the Single Sisters' teaching, the school flourished and provided the girls of late-eighteenth-century Salem with as rigorous an education as the boys of the town received. As the oldest educational institution for girls and women in America, Salem Academy, and College has a proud history of fostering independence in women. Today, situated in Winston-Salem, NC, Salem is an intimate learning community of 1,100 women from all over the world and is one of our nation's most distinguished private liberal arts colleges. Our students have the freedom to explore who they are and whom they want to become. They enjoy state-of-the-art facilities for the sciences, athletics, and the performing arts. They help manage student life on campus through a dynamic Student Government Association, and they participate in over fifty clubs and activities. Grounded in our mission to prepare our students to change the world, we dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of excellence in everything we do. By joining Salem College and becoming a member of our sisterhood, you will not only benefit from the experiences of those women who have gone before you you will also have the opportunity to help shape the future of the city, state, country, and world in which you live. No dream is too big, and the results are up to you. So go out and make it happen. Salem College, a liberal arts college for women, values its students as individuals, develops their unique potential, and prepares them to change the world. We are a cozy community of students, faculty, and staff right in the middle of a working 18th-century village. We are a forward-thinking, liberal arts institution with real history – an urban residential campus with a twist. Salem was founded in 1772 on the revolutionary idea that young women deserved the same level of education given to young men. Today, nearly 250 years later, it remains a revolutionary idea. Today, we empower our students not just as women, but as human beings. We empower them to be curious, be creative, be responsible, be involved, be discerning, be heard, be needed, and be known. As a Salem College student, you can access several resources and services, all designed to empower you and enrich your life. The challenge for you will be deciding which activities and clubs you commit your time to as an academically driven, successful student. Being socially active on campus is a great way to maintain a healthy lifestyle balance. We encourage you to seek opportunities for self-fulfillment that also are a means of giving back. By joining a club, playing a sport, or participating in one of our many community-oriented programs, you can take care of your health while contributing to the greater community. In addition to taking advantage of the many local initiatives offered at Salem College, you have the option of completing an internship in Winston-Salem or the location of your choosing. Participating in an internship will provide you with useful work experience and help you decide whether your chosen career path is what you are looking for. For cultural insights and development, you can spend a summer, a semester, or January Term studying abroad in a foreign country. Finally, master that foreign language you have been working on by immersing yourself in another culture or visit the historical sites you have been studying as part of your major. The primary purpose of residence life is to create a sense of community within the residence halls by valuing, supporting, challenging, and empowering traditional students to discover their unique potential and celebrate human differences through their relationships with others by the Salem College mission. The Salem College residential experience requires students to explore balancing their individual needs with those of a larger group and become aware of their role in the greater Salem College community. Residence halls will expose students to many different people from themselves, culturally, ethnically, and socially. Salem College is a residential campus. All traditional undergraduate students must live in College residence halls on campus unless they make their home with members of their immediate families or legal guardians. Students living in College residence halls must be full-time students (registered for a minimum of three-course credits). Students must submit a residency requirement waiver to the Dean of Students (located in Shober House) to be approved to live off-campus. The Office of Career and Professional Development prepares traditional students for success after Salem by encouraging the transformation of knowledge into action. We take a holistic approach to uncover each student's unique potential, cultivate leadership, and foster self-sufficiency in preparation for global citizenship and life-long professional development. 5. Since 1772, Salem Academy has provided girls in grades 9-12 an outstanding college preparatory education. Our beautiful grounds are adjacent to Salem College, and many of our seniors take classes on the college campus during their senior year. We share a beautiful Fine Arts Center and state of the art Athletic Complex with the College. We also offer dual enrollment classes on our campus so that students may receive college credit from teachers in their academic community. As you can guess, we do not succumb to the boundaries of a traditional independent school. Now in its third century of sustaining a community in which girls learn best, Salem Academy remains dedicated to fostering young women's intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical growth. Founded in 1772, Salem Academy flourishes today as an independent, college-preparatory school that celebrates its diversity and affirms each student's uniqueness. As advocates for women in leadership roles, we recognize our place in a global society and persist in our commitment to a lifetime of learning. We pledge ourselves to retain and nurture those values which encourage each student to take risks, show integrity, and discover her passion as she sets out on her journey. Small class settings, college-level facilities, and a blend of classic and modern teaching methods give students the tools to master every subject. Our liberal arts and sciences curriculum challenges and inspires, building the foundation students need to excel at the nation's top colleges and universities. Salem's faculty serves a vital role in students' lives. As mentors, champions, and advisors, they ignite brilliance and help students find and follow their unique talents and passions. While a Salem education is elite, our culture is not elitist. We have created a caring community where young women are encouraged to embark on their intellectual, spiritual, and social journeys. As an all-girls school, Salem gives each student the freedom to mature at her own pace and explore new interests in a supportive environment. The triumphant Salem graduate emerges ready for the future, equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed in anything she pursues. The Salem Academy learning specialist works closely with students who have documented needs for learning accommodations and puts formal plans to address these needs. The learning specialist also helps teachers implement accommodations and works with faculty to identify struggling learners so that support and modifications can be provided if needed. Also, the learning specialist serves as the point person for the SAT and ACT special requests. The Salem Academy Learning Center is located in our beautiful Ann Stone Hanes Library, offering a collaborative workspace, a comfortable and confidential environment, and a central location that most students visit daily. Each Salem student is encouraged to visit the Learning Center to support time management, organization, note-taking, and study skills. Through academic coaching with the learning specialist and peer tutoring, students develop the strategies needed to reach their academic potential. A Salem Academy education infuses every student with the confidence and skills to succeed in anything she wishes to pursue. We have perfected a curriculum that inspires and challenges, led by expert teachers who ignite brilliance in young minds and serve as mentors who help students find and follow their passions. Our students graduate with a foundation for success in College and beyond. One hundred percent of our students are accepted into some of the nation's finest colleges and universities. Located in historic Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Salem Academy is an elite school without a culture of elitism. Students pursue personal excellence while learning to celebrate differences, collaborate in groups, and appreciate the people and the world around them. View full school
