Ysgol Henllan is a Welsh-medium school with pupils from Henllan, Trefnant,  St.Asaph, and Denbigh attending daily. Pupils are taught through the medium of Welsh from the Nursery class up to Year 6. English is introduced as a subject in Year 3. We are extremely proud of our purposely adapted school building and extensive grounds – indeed they are of the highest standard. Investment has been made to upgrade the ICT provision at the school with the current computer and tablet technology. In September 2016, Ysgol Hamadryad opened with one Reception class of seventeen pupils on a temporary site next door to Ninian Park Primary School, the school will move to a brand new permanent location on the Hamadryad site in Butetown in Autumn Term 2018. Although we are looking forward to moving to a new building and opening the doors for the first time in January 2019, we are proud of the Welsh connections on our temporary site. In 1949, the first Welsh school in Cardiff opened in Ninian Park Primary School’s building, and between 2006 and 2013 Ysgol Gymraeg Tan-yr-Eos occupied the same site. In light of the closure of Tan-yr-Eos and its amalgamation with Ysgol Treganna, a local group of people began a campaign to ensure that the increasing demand for Welsh-medium education in Butetown and Grangetown was fulfilled. The campaign was a success, the new building will be financed by the Council and Welsh Government (21st Century School Programme). It is with immense pride and great joy that the school has finally been established and that the staff and governors can make the dream of a forward-thinking and welcoming school for all local children a reality. The wards of Butetown, Grangetown, and the surrounding areas are noted for their multi-ethnic and multi-lingual character and one of the objectives of the new school will be to reflect the diverse nature of our different communities. The name of the school is deeply rooted in the history of the area. The Hamadryad was a ship that was moored close to the site of the school between 1866 and 1905 which served as a hospital for sailors from around the world. Hamadryad Hospital was opened in 1905 on nearby dry land and today Hamadryad Park is the name of the public park on the banks of the River Taff that will provide the school playing fields. The name Hamadryad comes from Greek mythology—the hamadryad was believed to be a nymph that protected trees. The history of the school’s name conveys many of its most fundamental values: the importance of caring for people and the environment alike – it will be Cardiff’s first ‘sustainable school’, and respect for different cultures and heritage. Y5 and 6 pupils and council members run a fruit shop during morning break time. The school has an anti-“Bullying” policy. The school runs a “Cyfaill Clên” scheme, where the older pupils care for the children who require a friend/games on the playground. “Circle Time” is used to promote good behavior and the pupil's moral and social development. School Council – A pupils committee that represents members of their classes on the council. This provides an opportunity for the pupils to voice their ideas on several matters. There is a happy and hard-working ethos at the school where everybody is treated as an individual and receives recognition and appreciation from everybody at the school. We take pride in its caring nature that encourages our pupils to be confident independent individuals within the community. The school environment provides many opportunities for outdoor studies that certainly enrich the pupil's curricular experiences. There is a nature reserve at the far end of the field that contains a coppice and small stream that is regularly used. In 2015, the school developed into an adventure play area, and we are currently developing a story reading area in the coppice. All of these contribute towards the pupil's educational development. The governors and parents show a valuable commitment towards the school in their support for our policies and assistance in fundraising. The Gwynedd Healthy School Scheme is managed in partnership with the National Public Health Service of Wales, Gwynedd Council, and the Local Health Board. The scheme enables schools to make a positive contribution towards the health and well-being of their pupils, teachers, and the wider community by developing an environment that promotes health. The school is part of the County’s Green Schools scheme that promotes care of the local and worldwide environment. The scheme aims to teach this to children as a sustainable ‘way of life for the future. The school has also been awarded the highest accolade in this field. We have received the ‘Eco Schools’ accreditation. We take pride in our close relationship with the community. We work closely with the Town Council and Local Councillor to ensure that the children have input into the development of their area. The behavior of the children at Nefyn is excellent. As a consequence, they are rewarded with golden time on Friday afternoons. The children will get to choose from several nice activities such as playing games, drawing pictures, etc. On the rare occasions when children choose not to stick to the golden rules, they will lose 5 minutes of golden time. However, the child can regain these 5 minutes by displaying effort and behaving as he/she should. If a child’s behavior doesn’t improve we may use alternative strategies such as loss of playtime.
