Ysgol y Gorlan nestles neatly under Tremadog's rocks on the edge of the village of Tremadog. The Alltwen Hospital is a close neighbor, Moel y Gest in its glory to the front and there is plenty of open farmland surrounding the school. The school serves the areas of Tremadog, Prenteg, Penmorfa, Golan, Treflys, and Cwmystradllyn. Some pupils travel from outside the school's natural catchment area. Ysgol y Gelli is located on Bethel Road in the northwestern outskirt of the town. The green fields surrounding it give it a countryside feeling. It is in a prime location, sitting adjacent to Ysgol Pendalar and the Cylch Meithrin (Nursery), and within short walking distances to the Leisure and Tennis centers and also the secondary school – Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen. The school makes a great deal of use of the centers and has a very good relationship with Ysgol Pendalar, Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, and the Cylch Meithrin. The catchment area extends to the castle and along the coast to Plas Menai. We treasure the fact that the town is a stronghold for the Welsh language. We try to give the children a sense of belonging in the community and teach them about its history, geography, culture, and people. Visits to various buildings and areas in Caernarfon are arranged for the children and people from the community are invited to the school to talk about their work or interests. The school has a good partnership with Adran yr Urdd and the children have an opportunity to compete in the Eisteddfod every year. The children compete regularly in different sport competitions eg football, netball, rugby, swimming gala, etc. Our objective within the school is to create a happy and safe haven for children to develop to their full potential educationally, emotionally, and socially. This school relies on the parents’ support, to succeed. We, therefore, urge you to take an interest in your children’s education and to support the school in its work and public activities. This is an ‘open’ school, i.e. parents are always welcome. Indeed, we strongly urge you to visit, although please appreciate that classroom teacher cannot discuss pupils’ work with parents, unless by prior arrangement with the Headteacher. As well as visiting the school individually, parents also have three formal opportunities to visit the school during the year. We hold three Open Evenings, once a term. In addition to these Open Evenings, we usually hold a Concert or Carols Service at Christmas at the school hall or in Berea Newydd Chapel as well as Sports during the Summer term. We urge you to join in all these activities, as well as in the activities organized by the Parents Teachers Association. Parents must recognize the value of a frank and open relationship between them and the school. All of us share the same ultimate aim, namely to provide your children with the best possible education. The partnership is crucial to achieving our aim it depends on good contacts and co-operation between the home and school at all times. By the requirements of the 1986 Education Act, the LEA has prepared, and regularly reviews, a written policy statement on the secular curriculum. The National Curriculum’s requirements are interpreted in light of the LEA’s philosophy and current policies. On the whole, the National Curriculum is presented using thematic work. An outline of the contents of every theme is posted on the school’s website. A specific time frame is allocated for subjects especially Mathematics, Physical Education, and Music. Each term, the children visit places that are of educational value and match the current theme, places such as Pili Palas, Wales Slate Museum, Celtica, Penrhyn Castle, Llanystumdwy Museum, Gelli Gyffwrdd, Bangor Cathedral, and Dinas Dinlle Beach. Ysgol y Foel is a local authority community primary school, providing full-time education for both boys and girls, between 4 years (Reception) and 11 years (Year 6). We provide a part-time Nursery for children starting the term following their 3rd birthday. Pupils are taught through the medium of English, with Welsh being taught as a second language. The school was built in 1963 and is positioned within the rural village of Cilcain. The school has a new Foundation Phase Unit and two classrooms for Key Stage Two children, a library, a secretary and headteacher’s offices, staff room, and hall. There also toilets for the pupils and staff. Outside there is ample playing area for all the pupils: the Foundation Phase has its fenced-off area (including covered area). There is also a large hard surface playground at the rear of the school. During the fine weather, pupils are allowed on the large playing fields which provide plenty of opportunity for games and recreational activities. Ysgol Y Faenol is a local authority community primary school, situated in the village of Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire. Ysgol Y Faenol is a predominantly English medium primary school, where the pupils experience the curriculum mainly through the medium of English, but where Welsh is taught as a second language and some aspects of some subjects may be taught in Welsh. Ysgol y Borth was opened in 1976. Most of the children come from the immediate catchment area of housing estates surrounding the school. Some children travel from the surrounding villages of Llansadwrn and Rhoscefnhir as well as some from other areas outside the school's catchment area. Some children are from other countries with their parents studying at the University in Bangor working in Ysbyty Gwynedd. The school, therefore, services a linguistically and socially varied community. The school day is between 9 - 3.15 for the Junior Department and between 9 - 3 pm. for the Infant Department. Children are admitted once a year, at the beginning of September, or the September immediately after the child's fourth birthday, and we do our utmost to ensure that the child feels settled and part of the school community. During the child's time at Ysgol y Borth, we strive to ensure that every pupil develops to his potential, is introduced to the Welsh heritage, and matures as a full member of the constantly changing multi-cultural society. “To create situations and provide resources that enable all pupils to grow into complete personalities, using and developing their talents according to their age, ability, and interest, and preparing them to be responsible members of a bilingual society, who can contribute to it and gain from it and live in peace and harmony with others.” There is no doubt that because of its famous suspension bridge, built-in 1926 in an area of astounding natural beauty on the shores of the Menai Straits, that Menai Bridge is most renowned. Over the past decades, the town became a focal point for tourists and travelers and its convenient location to nearby towns ensured that it became a popular residential area. Indeed its present population has risen to 3,000. Despite the reduction in the maritime use along the Straits, the University of Wales, Bangor's School of Ocean Sciences is established here and the town continues to uphold many historical and cultural events. With the Menai Straits along its shoreline, the majestic mountains of Snowdonia as a backdrop, and its convenient travel connections to the towns of North Wales, certainly Menai Bridge can be considered as the gateway to Anglesey. Entering school for the first time is a very big step in your child’s life as well as your own. We want this transition from home to school or from school to school to be as smooth as possible. Hopefully, this prospectus will help, however, no prospectus will answer all your questions, so please visit the school with your child and see for yourself how happy the children are and how well they work with their teachers. We are very proud of the pupils at Ysgol y Bedol. Every year we have many visitors to the school and frequently they make comments about how well our pupils behave and how courteous they are. The facilities and extended learning opportunities offered at Ysgol y Bedol are excellent and the many activities offered to the pupils ensure that they become effective lifelong learners. Prepare your child for school. Encourage your child in all he/she set out to do. All research has proved beyond a doubt that home, where there is love, interest, stability, and continuing encouragement, does more for a child’s educational progress than any other factor. Make sure he/she can dress him/herself and make his/her needs known. Make sure that your child comes to school with a good command of language. Talk to your child constantly, read to him/her daily and teach him/her nursery rhymes and songs. Make an effort to attend school meetings arranged for parents. Teachers can become frustrated if parents fail to do their duty to their children. Make sure your child comes to school clean and suitably dressed. Please ensure that your child is ‘potty/toilet trained’ – a “big accident” will be followed by a phone call home. Ensure that your child has faith and trust in his/her teacher. Get up early enough to give your child a calm and ordered start to the day. Remember that a good breakfast is essential to his/her staying power and concentration throughout the morning. (There is a very good Breakfast Club at the school each morning from 8 o’clock.) You know your child, so don’t expect the school to suddenly make him/her well behaved if you haven’t succeeded in doing so at home. A school has to be fair to all its pupils, therefore, please don’t ask for special treatment such as ‘Let him stay in at playtime’ or ‘She doesn’t want to go swimming. Remember, that some conformity is reasonable in society. Always discuss any concerns with the class teachers – even if you think they are small. It’s a good idea to mark your child’s school uniform. It’s difficult to find a sweatshirt without a name – it may be one of the hundreds! Finally, do not join the ‘school rails parliament’!
