In grade school, the students are given a classical education in reading, writing, mathematics, literature, and the sciences. The class teacher stays with a class to teach the core curriculum from first grade to eighth grade, allowing the children to grow in confidence and security as their teacher’s understanding of them deepens. Specialty teachers provide instruction in areas such as music, French, physical education and movement, and handwork. The Grade school key: We do not teach students “a set of facts” they will need for high school. We help each child to develop a set of skills learned in relationship to that child’s individual experience. Anything learned purely through memorization is not enough. Real learning and understanding occur when you have internalized the experience and made it your own. We strive to support our grade school students in the unfolding of their emotional lives by nurturing their growing sensitivities and feelings through every step of our curriculum.

Nearly 50 years ago, in 1965, the pastor of the Christian Reformed Church in Vernon felt that community children needed more Christian nurturing than standard Sunday school programs. Consequently, every Saturday morning additional classes were held. Shortly thereafter a promotional choir of 40 children and a Christian Kindergarten were started. Following the scripture in Proverbs 22:6, the seeds of the vision for a Christian day school in Vernon were planted. Train up a child in the way he should go even when he is old he will not depart from it. Those were pioneer days. It wasn’t just concrete, wood, windows, and doors…it was tremendous collaboration, sweat, laughter, sacrificial giving, and ultimately, faith that constructed VCS. In 1974 several Christian families in the Vernon area were led to act upon the vision given them by God for a complete K – 12 Christian Education for their children. Believing God gives parents the responsibility for educating their children, these parents formed the Vernon Christian School Society. Its objective was to establish a Christian Day School in Vernon to serve as an educational arm of the Christian home. The vision became a reality in 1977 when Vernon Christian School first opened its doors at its present location. Ten years later the school had grown to a student population of 116 students. In 1989 the first Kindergarten was offered at VCS. As the student population grew so did the need for expanding the facilities. We’ve grown up over the years. Several additions and renovations allowed VCS to accommodate a student body from K-Gr 10. Dreams and visions…all representing God’s hand in helping us equip our students for a life of discipleship through excellent education in the Christian community. The current enrollment is 550 students in small class sizes from Grades 7 to 12. Historically, between 98 to 100 percent of WIC graduates transition to post-secondary education. Students are selected to attend WIC based on their performance on standardized entrance tests where average intellectual potential and skill acquisition, as a minimum, must be demonstrated. In addition, students must display social maturity commensurate with their age at the time of testing. This maturity is evaluated during a personal interview and through guided letters of reference.

In the French school, all subjects are taught in French, except English, which is taught as an enriched, mother-tongue course. The French instruction is Français langue maternelle or Langue Seconde Enrichi (depending on the child’s placement). In English school, Math, Science, Ethics, and Study Methods are taught in English. The remaining courses are in French. They include: géographie, histoire, musique, arts plastiques, education physique and French. We can provide Mother Tongue French or Langue Seconde Enrichi (depending on the child’s placement.) Students in the English school must possess a Certificate of Eligibility for English studies. We believe that the best way to prepare for the future is to capitalize on the opportunities of the present. With this in mind, West Island College offers an enriched curriculum to all its students during their years in high school. Time is provided during the school day for students to commit themselves to community service, to develop “career opportunities” through guest lectures, job placement opportunities, and individual research, and to participate in structured explorations of cultural, academic, or personal interests.
