Over seventy years ago, the founder of KEIMEI GAKUEN, Takasumi Mitsui, returned to Japan from England just before WW2. There were no schools in Japan that accepted returning international students who wanted to broaden their knowledge and language skills acquired abroad. In April 1940, Takasumi decided to open up his own house in Minato ward, Tokyo to start KEIMEI GAKUEN with thirteen teachers and eight students. We understand that some families have an interest in attending Japanese elementary schools, but hope that their children will maintain and improve their English level. We also know that there are families that value our style of education and would like an opportunity to continue with us after kindergarten. In April 2015, we started an elementary education program designed to work alongside your child’s elementary school. The curriculum will be based around the new Common Core standards used by schools in the United States. After the Academic year, each student will be given an officially proctored exam that shows that they have achieved national standards for that grade level. We will be using a standardized test that is commonly taken by American private schools, public schools, and even home-schooled children. We also hold After School and Summer School English classes to provide further English education into the future. Primarily aimed (but not limited to) at elementary or middle school students, we hold a variety of classes tailored to your child's English ability, including science class, current events, and newspaper classes to name just a few. This is our first step in serving our community with a world-class curriculum for our children in the heart of Tokyo City. Star Kids International Preschool offers a full-day program, with hours of operation from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm. Children can attend preschool five days, three days, or two days per week, subject to availability. Our teachers maintain high standards and are certified by IPC. Teachers use a variety of teaching strategies to enhance learning and development, and an appropriately challenging and safe environment is provided for Toddlers to explore and manipulate. Children are encouraged to learn and grow at their rates and in their ways. Our teachers focus on the whole child – social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual – within a structure that allows for some natural flexibility. The International Preschool Curriculum, IPC, is a professional association of more than 100 schools worldwide, founded to strengthen and harmonize early childhood education standards. Your little one will stay with us and learn our morning routine, join us as we enjoy snack time, playtime, and park time, then head home again at lunchtime! This program was specially created for parents who are considering enrolling their children in First Step (our all-day daycare program) but are worried that all day might be just a little too long for their little ones to stay away from home, especially if it’s their first time. Little by little, taking baby steps, your babies will not only get used to but come to love going to Star Kids, and, before you know it, they will be ready to take even bigger steps and join the First Step! Our First Step daycare is usually a child’s first experience being separated from his or her parents. By making our classes as fun, relaxing, and stress-free as possible, we aim to make this “first step” easy. Children will learn songs and dances, take part in our fun, IPC play-based learning activities, go to the park, and be encouraged to explore everything around them, slowly learning and playing together. Our Preschool program is packed with fun, IPC play-based learning activities but also focus on literacy, numeracy, and the child’s social and emotional development. Singing, dancing, going to the park are among our daily activities. Children learn to play together and share, steadily improving under the guidance and care of their loving teachers. Our all-day program was developed to support working parents. Children staying with us all day join our Preschool program in the morning, then enjoy some quiet, teacher-supervised play and a rest, before taking part in our After School program. We also provide Early Spot care from 8:30 am and Late pickup until 6:30 pm for an extra charge. We understand some days can be busy and a parent may have to drop their children off early or pick them up late. Just let us know a day or two in advance and will have everything prepared. Children coming for the afternoon program are asked to bring a small snack and a drink. Children coming for the morning program are asked to bring a packed lunch and a snack from home. Children have varied tastes and dietary requirements, not to mention food allergies that need to be taken into consideration. All students are unique, and their daily study schedules vary according to their needs, abilities, and interests. Teachers will work with students on an individual basis throughout the day. Students follow the check sheets prepared by their teachers to keep track of what needs to be done each day to complete coursework and prepare for tests. The school day begins at 9 AM with a brief assembly of all students to enjoy some Biblical counsel, sing hymns, and hear announcements. After Assembly, all students help clean the school. Academic study time begins at 9:30 AM. Each student and the teacher consult the student’s check sheet to determine what the student needs to work on for the day. While lessons on the check sheet proceed sequentially for each subject, students rarely do a lesson from each subject each day. Students may work diligently on several lessons of the same subject for the entire school day if needed. Also, students do not miss lessons if they are absent. They can simply continue the next day they return to school from where they left off on their check sheet. Students have a short break time from 10:50 – 11 AM. At 11 AM on most days, students participate in Physical Education. When the weather is nice, P.E. often takes place outside at nearby parks. Students engage in a variety of sports and learn the necessary skills and rules as each activity is introduced. On Fridays, students usually have a longer P. E. session at local gymnasiums to enjoy swimming, basketball, badminton, or other sports requiring special facilities. Axis International School students may take the opportunity to spend time developing skills with which they are struggling or to work ahead in their studies. Students who stay on for summer school usually focus on one or two subject areas rather than the full yearly schedule of courses. English and Maths are the most popular summer subjects. Axis English School offers a variety of programs to help students develop their English skills. These courses emphasize different aspects of English language learning. Please let us know which of these topics you would like to study so that we can place you or your child into the right program. Children who have studied abroad in English-speaking countries often return to Japan and attend Japanese schools. Many of these students want to not only maintain their excellent English ability but improve it. Returnee students may choose to take various academic courses such as History, Science, Reading, or Grammar following the English curriculum used at Axis International School. In this way, students can continue to study at the same grade level as they were before returning to Japan, and also be promoted to the next grade level. Sometimes, students with no study abroad experience, but who have exceptional English skills equivalent to that of returnees, choose to take these international academic courses. For such students, it can be more fulfilling and challenging than regular children’s English classes. Axis teachers are all from English-speaking countries. They are selected after careful screening for accents and speech problems. Currently, we have After School English teachers from Canada, South Africa, and the United States. We use many games and songs to help children learn basic vocabulary and phrases. Teachers will work to get English beginners to show a physical response to a verbal command. After School English classes can motivate new English learners who are eager to join in activities with their peers After School English at Axis provides children an opportunity to improve their English through group lessons in the afternoons. These lessons are great for returnee children and those students who studied English before beginning Japanese school full time. Children in After School English classes can enjoy using their English to interact with others while continuing to improve their comprehension, conversation, and grammar. School students benefit from small class sizes with native English-speaking teachers. Students who want additional one-on-one classes with an English teacher may also sign up for courses in Axis English School. In adult classes, we study different themes and topics in the Bible. We also go through specific books in the Bible. Some classes are in a series while some are unique. Students may also request a specific topic. We hope that there is something for everyone! Children’s Bible class centers on Bible stories of particular interest to young children with an emphasis on developing personal values, respect for ourselves and others, and love for God’s creation. We understand that in the case of discipline, various measures will be used in increasing intensity, and the parents will be informed of all disciplinary action taken. Adopted as part of the education curriculum in the United Kingdom, the EYFS reflects British history, culture, and learning in education. The EYFS is a comprehensive framework based on the learning criteria of children ages 3 to 6, including physical development and childcare. The framework requires a summative evaluation of the child’s progress twice a year, including discussions with parents on how their child is progressing. Our programs enable children to play freely to foster their curiosity and inquiring minds to make learning connections. We support activities based on themes and cherish children’s questions to promote learning. School Programmes are offered every day for both PALIS students and students from other schools. Snack time starts at 3:00 pm, for 30 minutes, with one-hour after-school programs every day from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Clean-up and wind-down time run until 5:00 pm. The primary reason people chose Prime Junior is because of the programs we offer, such as phonics, reading, science, music, mathematics, and P.E. The range of subjects provides opportunities for children to acquire and develop a well-rounded set of skills, in addition to enjoying the learning process. Our monthly themes and special events help to expand childrens' knowledge base and strengthen their communication skills. Prime Academia is designed for students with a native or near-native level of English already, who need to hone these skills. Prime Academia is English Pocket's total culmination of our time-tested educational program targeted specifically toward returnee children. Prime Academia, an afternoon international school, aims to prepare children for the global arena through English education in various academic subjects. We assess returnee status to be a student who was enrolled full-time in a Public or Private English-speaking school overseas for at least one year. We also offer a "Pre-Academia" program for students who have never lived abroad or studied at an International School. Through our Pre-Academia programs, students learn fundamental English skills, as well as phonics and reading, before joining our regular programs. Our literacy curricula include focus on phonics, reading, and writing and have proven to be highly effective in helping our students acquire native-level reading skills by the age of 6. Prime Junior encourages children to explore the world around them to attain an advanced level of academic knowledge. Once they begin elementary school, students enter our Prime Academia programs to learn a variety of academic subjects. In short, our curricula are ready to be shared with preschool-aged students too university-level students. Our reading program is what sets Prime Junior apart from other preschools. It is possible to teach children to speak English if they are given enough time to learn. However, without reading skills, the oral English skills that they have acquired will vanish quickly as they enter elementary school. The key to retaining English skills is a solid reading foundation. Through our tested Prime Junior classes, children learn phonics from the very beginning. As they progress to words, phrases, paragraphs, and stories, they gain a concrete foundation of reading skills. They will read and recite over 200 selected Reading Basket storybooks and answer comprehension questions about the contents. Through this, they develop reading comprehension skills, which equal or excel that of native English-speaking children. We provide a DVD for self-study at the end of the month, which contains all the songs and themes being taught in the coming month. We encourage our students to learn vocabulary, phrases, and songs at home to use them eagerly during lessons. Teachers that the students are familiar with are featured in the DVD and they are going to help the students learn even at home. We hand out a weekly report on Fridays, which includes all the activities and studying students did throughout the week as well as detailed comments on their behaviors and progress. This is a good summary for the week in addition to brief verbal reports given at pick-up time, and it is also helpful for busy fathers who are not able to come to school during the week. We prepare a report card for all the students at the end of the term to show how much they have improved. The report includes not only academic progress but also their daily attitudes and achievements throughout the term. Students receive one sticker every time they read one of the Reading Basket books. Having read 50 books in one year, students are awarded the title of the Reading Leader whilst those who have completed 100 books in 2 years are granted with the tile of the Reading Master. This encourages students to read different books every week. Prime International School students can borrow one DVD per week from the school’s vast collection of English movies (we have more than 300 titles). Students get to pick their favorite film to take home with them. There are several events planned at Prime International School such as a performance day in July, a Halloween Party in October, a sports day in November, and a Christmas concert in December. What is more, we have academic events like reading contests as well as frequent parent-teacher meetings to provide opportunities for parents to get involved and keep informed of their children’s progress.
