Christian Academy in Japan (CAJ) is a K-12 school established in 1950 to provide Christ-centered education to the children of evangelical missionaries. While continuing in this purpose, CAJ also serves other families who desire this type of education for their children. We serve approximately 450 students in our day school program and more than 300 students in our School Support Services program. Our program uses English as the language of instruction and a North American curriculum. A division of CAJ, SSS has been meeting the needs of English-speaking homeschoolers in Japan since 1983 with consultancy, resources, and programs. Some SSS families homeschool all subjects while others send their children to Japanese schools and supplement with English studies at home. SSS also provides support for affiliated schools. Creation in the image of the one living and true God bestows special dignity and value on all human beings and mandates us to be God's agents of creativity, care, and compassion in the world. Over the years we have welcomed other families to SSS who desire this same kind of Christ-centered educational help. We have quite a few families from international marriages. The CAJ library supports the educational, spiritual, and intellectual needs and interests of students, staff, and parents, enabling and encouraging a lifetime passion for learning and reading. We provide a variety of print resources and online databases for research or leisure. The Playgroup at DSKI is a fun and interesting class for native and non-native English speaking children from 1 to 3 years old that is held on Thursdays for one hour. Using many songs, picture books, stories, puppets, and other props, games, role-play, and more fun and stimulating activities, children will learn target languages such as greetings, colors, shapes, numbers, action verbs, and short sentences. The class activities are widely acknowledged as effective methods of motivating young children to understand and learn the language. Educators emphasize that repetition is the key to success in learning a language and that songs are effective, entertaining tools for mastering pronunciation and rhythm. As parents will accompany their children to the class, parents can learn the songs, activities, and also the target language meaning they can practice with their children at home. The Early Years Program at DSKI consists of two primary groups: Pre-Kindergarten (children 2-3 years old) and Early Years / Kindergarten (children 3-5 years old). The Early Years department is equipped with facilities and resources that were designed with younger children in mind, and created to provide them an accessible and engaging space to flourish. The Pre-Kindergarten curriculum follows three original units inspired by the IB philosophy of “inquiry-based learning.” These units help children to build vocabulary, strengthen their developing social and motor skills, and prep them for entry into the IB PYP Early Years Program. Over two years, students in Early Years explore 8 PYP Units of Inquiry, providing them a foundation for the transdisciplinary themes of the PYP. Our Sprout program has a thematic curriculum focusing on topics that facilitate an interest in learning. Through a curriculum that is based on daily projects, the children are allowed to explore their interests, reward their curiosity, and further their development. Children in the Sprout program are constantly exploring a variety of materials, textures, colors, sounds, and sensory experiences. The goal of the program is to provide the children with the opportunity to make discoveries every day. In the Maple class, the children are introduced to more thematic learning and projects can develop to last for a week or often even an entire theme. In the Maple program, we begin to introduce the children to country-based studies which form the core of the curriculum for our Oak program. By pairing child interest-based daily studies with exciting thematic projects, our Maple children are allowed to develop a greater understanding of each month’s theme. The Maple program is supplemented by exciting lessons in music, sports, and gardening. The goal of the Maple program is to allow the children to develop a love for learning through more in-depth explorations. Our Oak program focuses entirely on international thematic discovery. The Oaks are engaged in child-led explorations of a new country each month. During each theme, the children are allowed to follow their interests in a wide range of topics including creative studies, dance, music, science, geography, and cooking. Children’s House is tucked away in a quiet residential area of Motoazabu. The School is truly a “Children’s House” where Montessori materials and furniture are sized for children. Doshisha International School, Kyoto (DISK) is one of the newest members of the Doshisha family of schools. DISK was established in 2011 as a part of Doshisha International Academy (DIA), in the city of Kuzigawa. DISK is a grade 2-12 school that delivers an international curriculum in English, designed to meet the needs of the internationally-minded community residing in the Kansai area. DISK obtained international accreditation through the prestigious International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). IBO Diploma Program (DP) authorization came in late 2011 followed by the IBO Primary Years Program (PYP) authorization in early 2014. The quality of our teaching and programs was further validated when DISK obtained accreditation from the Western Association of Colleges and Schools (WASC) in July 2015. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) offers a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning. It provides an inquiry-based curriculum model that incorporates guidelines on what students should learn, how students should act as learners and as community members, teaching methodologies, and assessment strategies. The PYP is a guided inquiry approach to learning and teaching. Inquiry-based units of study, known as Units of Inquiry, are the focus for learning in homeroom classes, and when appropriate they are integrated into other curriculum areas. Students experience what it is like to think and act like a historian, scientist, engineer, or mathematician. Within each Unit of Inquiry, students and teachers identify together what they want to know, what they already know, what they need to know, and how best they might find that out. Knowledge in the PYP is developed through six Units of Inquiry in each grade level under the headings of six transdisciplinary themes. These themes are used to integrate subject knowledge across the main curriculum areas of languages, mathematics, social studies, science and technology, the arts, personal, physical, and social education (PPSE). The Units of Inquiry are significant for all students, give them opportunities to explore challenging, relevant, and engaging knowledge, encourage knowledge to be looked at in a transdisciplinary way, and can be revisited throughout the student's years of schooling. There are two bus services in operation for students who commute by train. The buses run from Shin-Hosono station on the Kintetsu Kyoto line, Hosono station on the JR Gakkentoshi line, and Nara Tomigaoka station on the Kintetsu Keihanna. The school has an online lunch ordering system available through the school website for families wishing to order lunches. Please note the lunches need to be ordered 2 weeks in advance. The DISK library is a center for literacy and research, a place that fosters and celebrates the love of reading, and a learning and social hub for the whole school community. Our school library provides a wide range of books and multimedia resources to support teaching and learning, helps to facilitate access to information, and fosters a reading and information culture that promotes independently-motivated readers and learners for life. Students are issued with a library card to check out and in books and resources. Shortly, we hope to make our library accessible to the entire school community during and outside of school hours. Study trips are considered to be an integral part of the curriculum and it is expected that all students participate. Study trips are planned to tie into the curriculum and the cultural study of Japan, to give the students an opportunity for relevant, experiential learning. At times the focus may be more place-based, with students researching the geography and ecology of a region. All study trips involve prior preparation for the activity and follow-up evaluation and work in class. Chateau des Bambini simply means “Children’s Castle” in Italian. Dr. Maria Montessori is the first physician and educator who opened the first Montessori school in Rome. She spent many years observing and working with children, and her method captured my interest. I have raised 3 children, and during that time, English nurseries/preschools and Montessori kindergartens were very difficult to find. This is why I decided to open a school of my own. Our school has had over 2,000 graduates varying from 40 different nationalities. Most of them attended universities at well-known schools abroad such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, etc. I am truly amazed that up to now, most of them are still connected. Our school is set to a “home-like” environment which helps promote a transition from home to school life, and our teachers are Montessori certified. Core and elective high school curriculum at CIS include courses in English language arts, mathematics, general science, biology, chemistry, physics, history, computer studies, Japanese, music, physical education, and art. Selection of certain elective subjects makes science/business and arts/business streams available as options for study. At CIS students will earn high school credits resulting in a Canadian academic high school graduation diploma. This academic graduation also provides students with post-secondary entrance requirements for many Canadian and other universities. Significant student personal academic counseling is provided as students make these course selections and begin outlining their post-secondary interests. Other opportunities at CIS include the provision of advanced placement (AP) exams, from the College Board of the United States in some grade 12 subject areas. These exams written in the spring of each academic school year can provide students with post-secondary academic credits and/or placement in many North American universities. As students move through this last phase of their secondary education at CIS there is increased emphasis on the accomplishment of the skills necessary for success at the post-secondary level. All new ENGLISH IMMERSION students are "embedded" in their age-appropriate grade-level classes. Students from grades K-6 participate fully in the IB PYP program units of inquiry. And grade 7-112 students attend all regular classes. Language support is provided for students using a variety of models depending on the needs of the student. The role of the Guidance Counsellor is to provide support for the school community, particularly students, their parents, or guardians. In building A, the library is used by our students from grade K3/4 to grade 5. Students visit the library every week to take out and return books as well as to learn about information literacy.
