Asker International School is a new school recently established within the municipality of Asker kommune. The school first opened its doors in August 2013. Starting with 5 grades and expanding vertically every year, the school offers an IB structured curriculum. The school started in 2013 with 39 students and 8 employees. We now have approximately 300 students and 36 staff employed in either part-time or full-time positions. We are fortunate to have waiting lists for almost all our grades. We are currently registered as an authorized world school in both the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programme. So far we have representation from over 40 nationalities within our small school community and look forward to expanding this representation to create a truly international environment. From August we will have 10 classes in our Primary section and we are introducing our first grade, 10 class, to the Middle Years Programme, meaning we are undertaking the personal project for the first time this year. We have parallel classes in PYP and currently only single classes from grades 6 to 10. We have a maximum capacity of 20 students per class. Our subject provision in the Middle Years Programme is Mathematics, English, Norwegian, Sciences, Individuals and Societies, Physical Education, Performing arts (Visual Arts currently in grade 6), Design, Spanish (G8-G10), and Mandarin. We do not have an elective foreign language at present. This will probably change as we expand into parallel classes in grades 6-10. Developing global citizens for the world of tomorrow Asker International School will seek to assist each student to develop to his/her full potential, to become a versatile, effective, and responsible citizen of the world. We will do this within a secure and stimulating environment, delivering curricular programs developed and authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), with English as the medium of instruction. AIS does not wish to impose a particular system of belief on any member of the school: we will aim to create an atmosphere of freedom, tolerance, and mutual respect for all forms of belief and non-belief, seeking to emphasize what unites us, and not what divides us. Our emphasis will be on mutual respect: each student is to be encouraged to experience and understand the diversity of cultural, religious, and political systems with which they come into contact. As an international school, we will be committed to fostering international understanding, and awareness in each student of issues such as peace, freedom, and care of the environment – issues which are of concern to us all as world citizens. AIS will seek to give the students the means to know who they are as an individual, not only in an intellectual dimension but also in a moral, social and physical sense. We believe that the most important academic lessons for each young person are to learn how to learn, and to apply what one has learned. At the same time, we recognize the importance of qualifications in the modern world and commit to academic excellence. We believe that an individual must be able to live as a successful member of a community to achieve a balanced life.
