The Maria Montessori Institute (MMI) is a registered charity that promotes the authentic educational approach first developed by Maria Montessori.
This is achieved by providing:
- AMI teaching training for age levels 0-3 years, 3-6 years, and 6-12 years
- A school located at several sites serving children from 2 to 12 years
- Short courses and workshops aimed at parents and anyone interested in supporting the lives of children
- Promotion and support of outreach projects underpinned by Montessori principles
- We are affiliated with the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI).
The MMI is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children, staff, and visitors. We adhere to our safeguarding policy which is regularly reviewed.
Montessori schools promote hands-on, self-paced, collaborative, joyful learning. Children in Montessori follow their interests, wherever that passion leads giving them strong academics, leadership, self-discipline, responsibility, independence, initiative, and a lifelong love of learning.
Children are innately interested in learning about the world around them and through their natural curiosity can develop themselves. By providing an environment that supports natural development, Montessori education enables children to develop the fundamental capacities that they need to become happy and fulfilled adults who contribute to society.
Authentic Montessori environments encompass the following principles:
- Mixed-age groups not only offer a wide range of activities to spark children’s interest but also enable children to learn from others and learn by helping others.
- Freedom for children to work at their own pace, without interruption, choosing from a range of activities that are developmentally challenging and appropriate.
- Exploration is encouraged so that children find things out for themselves, make mistakes and correct them independently.
- Respect for each child as an individual personality with unique talents.
- Respect for others, the community, and the environment.
An AMI Montessori teacher has a deep understanding of child development and has been thoroughly trained to guide children towards productive and challenging experiences, both individually and collectively, that will provide a firm foundation for their future.
We are one of around 50 Montessori Training centers in the world, and the only one in the UK, which delivers the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Diploma, an internationally recognized qualification based on the authentic approach to Montessori education. The courses delivered by the Maria Montessori Institute have evolved directly from those first delivered by Dr. Montessori and her son Mario between 1919 and 1951.
We are proud of the academic excellence of our courses, which are delivered by highly qualified trainers who have all undertaken the AMI Trainer of trainers program after substantial experience working with children.
The Maria Montessori Institute runs exemplar Montessori schools in London where children aged 2 to 11 experience the Montessori approach delivered by AMI-trained teachers. On-going professional development and mentorship ensure that teachers are actively engaged in reflective practice to maintain the highest level of authenticity.
