As Newfoundland and Labrador's only university, Memorial has a special obligation to its people. Established as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who lost their lives on active service during the First and Second World Wars, Memorial University draws inspiration from these shattering sacrifices of the past as we help build a better future for our province, our country, and our world.
We are a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary, public, teaching/research university committed to excellence in everything we do. We strive to have a national and global impact while fulfilling our social mandate to provide university education for the people of the province and contribute to the social, cultural, scientific, and economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.
The Memorial experience goes beyond academics; it invites the discovery of self, community, and place. At Memorial, we celebrate our unique identity through the stories of our people – the work of scholars and educators, the ingenuity of students, the achievements of alumni – and the impact we collectively make in the province, the country, and the world. Memorial is the natural place where people and ideas become.
Memorial University has a vibrant culture of creativity and innovation reflected in the research activities of our scholars and researchers. Memorial is recognized for its productive engagement with community partners and research collaborators in Newfoundland, Labrador, and around the world. The Office of the Vice-President (Research) was established in 1992 when total research income was approximately $30 million per year. Since then, Memorial University's total research income has increased to approximately $100 million per year.
The Vice-President (Research) reports directly to the President and is responsible for the overall growth, development, and promotion of the broad range of research activities undertaken at Memorial.
Research at Memorial University is guided by the Research Strategy Framework, which identifies the goals and objectives necessary to grow activity, impact, and reputation in research. The framework acknowledges our special obligation to Newfoundland and Labrador and the importance of building capacity for research excellence that is both locally relevant and internationally significant.
In this section, you can explore the research culture of Memorial through the Research Strategy Framework, publications from the Office of the Vice-President (Research), active research units in the faculties and schools of Memorial and Memorial's research chairs.
Memorial University is committed to excellence in scholarly activities and, as such, is committed to ensuring that the highest standards of ethical conduct and scholarly integrity are understood and practiced by all members of the research community.
Scholarly activities vary among the disciplines at Memorial. Research involving human subjects is guided by the policy Ethics of Research Involving Human Participants. The appropriate ethics review board must review all research projects involving human participants undertaken by faculty, staff, or students.
The Institutional Animal Care policy guides the use of animals in teaching or research activities. All activities must be reviewed by the Institutional Animal Care Committee to ensure the humane use and care of animals.
Researchers, students, staff, and senior administration all play a role in ensuring the highest ethical standards conduct memorial's scholarly activities. In this section, you will find specific information on Memorial's activities and procedures related to research ethics and integrity.
