The University of Engineering and Technology (main) is located in the northern part of Lahore on the historical "Grand Trunk Road (G.T. Road)", near the magnificent Shalimar Gardens built during the great Mughal Empire. The institution started its career in 1921 as the ‘ Mughalpura Technical College ’. Later it became the ‘Maclagan Engineering College’, a name given to it in 1923 when Sir Edwards Maclagan, the then Governor of Punjab who laid the foundation stone of the main building, now called the Main Block, which still retains its majesty despite the wear and tear of over eight decades. At that stage, the institution offered courses of study in only two disciplines Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. In the year 1932, the institution was affiliated with the University of Punjab for the award of a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. In 1947, at the time of independence, the Institution was offering a well-established B.Sc. Degree Courses in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. In 1954 it started a Bachelor's Degree course in Mining Engineering, the first-ever of its kind in the country. However, the real expansion and development of the institution commenced in 1962 on its transformation into the ‘West Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology, and within a few years Bachelor's Degree Courses were started in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum & Gas Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Architecture, and City & Regional Planning. Later, the University started to develop its postgraduate programs, and by the 1970's it was offering Master's Degree Courses in various specializations of engineering, architecture, planning, and allied disciplines. Later, Ph.D. Degree Program was also instituted in several disciplines. Later on, renamed the University of Engineering & Technology in 1972. With a phenomenal increase in student enrollment in the seventies, the University established an Engineering College at Taxila in 1975, which later became an independent University in 1998 as the University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila. Keeping in view the upcoming power crises situation in the country, in 2004 the University established its Power Generation Unit with a capacity of 2 Mega Watts later enhanced to 3 Mega Watts, and became the first and only countrywide educational institution that has its Power Generation Unit. To meet the growing demands for Engineering graduates and allied disciplines in the country, the University started an expansion program in the new millennium. Consequently, the teaching and research capacity of the UET-Main was enhanced and the establishment of the satellite campuses was taken up. LCWU offers an opportunity to the young women of Pakistan for higher education in the faculties of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management and Administrative Sciences as well as in the Institutes of Education, Design and Visual Arts, Languages and Culture, Women Institute of Leadership and Learning and Institute of Pharmacy. The University is educating and training potential women leaders as scientists, engineers, artists, IT professionals, doctors, social scientists, politicians, educationists, and a highly competent workforce to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Being a progressive University, it aims to meet the standards of top international universities. New disciplines, programs, and a multidisciplinary approach have been incorporated to promote higher education. E-learning, a more learner-centered approach has been introduced to meet the international standards. International collaborations with top-ranking universities in UK, US, Australia, and Malaysia are in progress to keep pace with modern techniques being introduced in higher education. To ensure the provision of quality education, a rigorous internal quality assurance system has been introduced for consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of the university following LCWU Vision 2020. Self-Assessment Programs have been initiated by Quality Enhancement Cell in various departments for internal quality assessment to achieve academic excellence at LCWU. LCWU has well-equipped science laboratories, a well-designed Art studio, excellent TV and FM studios, and laboratories of mass communication, computer science, in addition to enriched libraries provide an excellent environment to carry out innovative academic and research activities for students as well as faculty. To ensure a conducive learning environment for the students, the physical infrastructure of the university is developing continuously. To cope up with the needs of the growing strength of the students, we are looking forward to starting our sub-campus at Kala Shah Kaku soon. This campus aims to make higher education accessible to 20,000 more young women. LCWU is making enormous efforts to enable young women to be financially empowered through employability and entrepreneurship. The Career Counseling and Job Placement Center (CCJP) facilitate young graduates in finding better work opportunities. Scholarships are offered by LCWU at the undergraduate and graduate level to make higher education accessible to highly-meritorious but financially constrained students. To make our students socially responsible citizens, we engage our students in different social action projects through the Active Citizenship Program (ACP), organized by LCWU in collaboration with the British Council. LCWU Vision is fully aligned with the Vision of the Government of Punjab focused on higher education of the young to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. We provide our students with ample opportunities to learn and to lead wherever they go in the world.
