Established in 1978, our school has developed expertise in educating international high school and post-secondary students throughout the past 35 years. We specialize in preparing our students for entrance into North American universities and colleges, as well as assisting students with learning English as a second language. GLCT is known for our "Personalized Education Program" in which we aim to meet the various needs of all our unique students. To date, universities in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world have accepted over 10,000 of our graduates. In recent years, 90+% of our graduates have been admitted to universities. Our students consistently receive Ontario and Canadian academic awards, as well as university entrance scholarships. This high record of success reflects the professional commitment and personalized touch that has become a trademark of The Great Lakes College of Toronto. With great pride and pleasure, We welcome you all to a new 2018-2019 school year at The Great Lakes College of Toronto (GLCT) – a center of quality education and excellence. At GLCT, excellence is achieved through high standards that ensure that all students grow to reach their highest levels year after year and are ready for the next steps in their lives. We serve a student population from a rich array of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. By providing a safe and caring learning environment, with high standards and excellence, we empower our students and enable them to become intellectually independent and responsible individuals. We are proud of our well-planned and personalized ESL program which helps address the diverse needs of English Language Learners. Throughout the program, students are personally assisted to acquire language proficiency while at the same time remaining engaged with the learning curriculum and developing a full range of literacy skills. We offer a comprehensive and authentic university preparation program, by all Ontario curriculum expectations, with multiple means of assessments administered to help ensure our students are ready for any reputed university. GLCT has made great strides to provide rigorous and high-quality education for every learner because we believe that every learner has the potential and capacity to grow and experience success. We have created and nurtured a culture that manifests itself in increased student learning, therefore, more students are being provided with opportunities to succeed at a higher level than before. We hold ourselves accountable and are relentless in our efforts to create and maintain a kind, caring, and equitable environment that inspires our staff and students alike. We take this responsibility extremely seriously and with humility because we understand the great distances our students have traveled, away from their families, to pursue higher education. As such, we not only monitor their academic performance but also their health and wellness - this is our top priority and commitment. Personally, no better learning context than two groups of caring adults, teachers, and parents, working together to build close relationships for the overall success of our students. We would encourage all parents to stay informed and involved in their child’s education. Parental engagement and involvement can bring both sides of a student’s life – home and school – together for marked improvements in attitude and achievement. View full school

- Our Ontario Certified Teachers go beyond the traditional role of teachers. Not only do they cover the curriculum content in an applied and engaging way, but they also serve as mentors and personal coaches to help our students understand their strengths and develop them personally relevant strategies to manage their work and access the content more deeply. The Element’s e¹ program for grades 7 to 8 incorporates the developmental needs of adolescents and provides students with an educational program that supports and challenges them as they begin this new stage of their development. It provides accountability, challenging standards, opportunities for critical thought, the development of exemplary communication skills, opportunities for personal exploration, and creative challenges. It is aimed at enabling the adolescent’s growth in self-knowledge and confidence, responsible citizenship, and a connection with our larger community through purposeful work and study. The Element’s e² program for grades 9 to 12 is designed to engage young people in their education and encourage the development of the high-level academic and life skills necessary for post-secondary education and modern collaborative work environments. In addition to participation in a strong academic program leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, Element students learn to manage their time, engage in research and present their findings orally, graphically, or in written form, work independently and creatively and lead as well as collaborate with others. The Element was first established in 2003 at its parent school, OMS Montessori, as a Junior High grade 7 and 8 program. In response to growing demand and the need for a Montessori high school program in the Ottawa region, The Element High School moved to its current location at Lansdowne Park in 2015. The Element is an independent not-for-profit high school that is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Understanding, acknowledging, and respecting the needs and tendencies of children at all stages of their development is a fundamental principle of the Montessori pedagogy. When visiting Toddler, Casa, or Elementary classes, one is often struck by the particular differences in each environment. Toddler and Casa environments take into account the tendency for sensorial exploration, the development of independence, and the importance of learning through concrete experience with specific didactic materials. Elementary programs, allow students to continue perfecting basic skills while pursuing their interests and passions through projects and inspiring lessons. This same principle also applies at The Element, a high school that is specifically designed to meet the needs and natural tendencies of growing adolescents. When you visit our environment, you will notice large open spaces, smaller breakout rooms, a commercial kitchen, and furniture that can be easily moved around. This enables our students to find workspaces to accommodate their learning styles. Our high school is located in the heart of the Glebe neighborhood. Proximity to a dynamic and vibrant community gives our students access to a variety of resources such as public libraries, museums, government offices, etc. This encourages our students to look to the community to find resources while expanding their horizons and further developing their independence. Easy access by foot or public transport enables them to go out in the world to pursue their research or work in the community. Our smaller numbers allow teachers to be available when needed. The Element mentorship program fosters independence while giving each student the support they require. This guarantees that each student has the amount of freedom they can handle responsibly. Our program is designed to offer students relevant experiences, which truly engage them by allowing free choices and the opportunity to follow their passion while ensuring they will have the academic skills to pursue further academic studies. Students learn real-life skills through programs such as cooking, entrepreneurship, and community work. Expanding horizons through travel opportunities allows our students to step out of their comfort zone and learn essential life skills. The school year begins with an Odyssey trip for the grade 7 and 8 students, an Urban Adventure in grades 9 and 10, and an International Community Service, which is planned in grade 11 for grade 12. At The Element, we encourage students to find their unique path to success by engaging them in all aspects of their education. The e1 curriculum is based on personal experiences and integrates all subjects into a meaningful investigation to meet these needs and characteristics. This curriculum builds throughout the year and incorporates opportunities for all academic disciplines and skills. Basic concepts are always related to the adolescent’s experience of their own time and culture. The resources of the community are explored and choices made based on the requirements of the Ontario curriculum and the goal of helping the adolescent stand in their own space and know that they are there. The majority of the work is done by students working individually or in small groups in the learning commons under the guidance of faculty. Students can use one another as resources and support throughout the day. Additional class time is devoted to discussion and reflection of the material studied. This makes the best use of today’s technology, encourages engagement and responsibility, and allows for flexibility and collaboration. Why is knowing this relevant?” “Why should they put in the effort to understand these concepts?” Preparation for future education and employment is a very esoteric rationale that makes sense to adults but not to all adolescents. Authentic experiences, actually being on location, participating in real work, and interacting with passionate experts are much more immediate, powerful motivators for learning at this age. While not all parts of all courses can support authentic experiences, authenticity is a primary consideration in curriculum development in the e2 program. The location of our campus at Lansdowne becomes a hub of learning and the city is integrated into the delivery of the curriculum. Some are year-long, such as the core subjects (math or French as a Second Language) some are semesters (Integrated Arts, Business). The content of a course and the needs of the students can be best met with this type of flexibility. The older adolescent seeks real opportunities for valorization that is to feel capable of succeeding in life by their merit. He or She is ready to be recognized for his or her unique and individual contribution to the world. View full school

- Reflective of the dynamic contemporary moment in which we find ourselves, The Dragon has added a host of new programs that will give students a greater awareness of their capabilities, and insight into the complexities of the world around them. Three Advanced Certificates – in the Philosophy of Science, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, and the History of Ideas – join our already sturdy curricular offerings. These certificates bring the intellectual challenges most often found in colleges and universities into the high school classroom, challenging Dragon students to think critically and ethically about the world they will inherit. I am eager to see the next set of Dragon graduates earn these certificates beside their OSSD’s next June. Leveraging the already fertile realm of teacher, student, and alumni entrepreneurial activity, The Dragon will begin operations as an incubator of young companies, teaching them the basics of business operations while encouraging them to think entrepreneurial and indicatively. Under the banner of entures@DragonAcademy or V@DA, a self-selected group of students will be encouraged to design a strategy for building an actual for-profit company, with Dragon instructor David Tollefson acting as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Dr. Sealey (me!) acting as CEO. With the involvement of parents and alumni who are already building or running technology companies, and what I hope will be the eventual involvement of business school students and professors to help us refine our planning and marketing, The Dragon is poised to become a critical node within the growing network of start-up driven learning organizations in the global marketplace of ideas. More about this exciting initiative as the year progresses. Knowing the centrality of STEM fields - science, technology, engineering, and math – to the world of commerce, I am pleased to see that our Scientists-In-Action program continues to attract multiple students to its experiential format, placing them besides working scientists in labs across the city to learn science by doing science. Indeed, involving our students in the life of the city, using Toronto as an extended classroom, has always been a part of a progressive Dragon education, expanding our educational directions outwards into the hospitals, conference rooms, museums, and parks that animate this wonderful city. The Dragon Academy is on the cusp of its second twenty years of existence, and I am pleased to lead the charge deeper into this complicated century. It is within The Dragon Academy that I hope our students learn what it means to be their best selves, to live lives of kindness and fortitude, to recognize the benefits of giving overtaking, of sharing, and loving in a world deeply in need of less selfishness and more love. With all the powers at my disposal, I intend to ensure that Dragon students are ready for the next phase of their lives and enter that phase confident in their ability to succeed. Kids have trouble seeing the use of a lot of what they are taught. Even the highest achievers often report that their chief motivation is external – they want to do well so they can get into a program and then a profession they see as desirable. They often complain of being forced to cram, of having to regurgitate. How can we get away from this model of teaching as the transmission of textbook material? What makes us want to learn at any age? Something stirs us to curiosity and wonder. Where’s the pleasure in it? Not in being tested, but in finding out. Not in assignments and limitations, but in freedom to explore. Museums are treasure houses full of rare, strange, and telling objects, made to prick our desire to know. Museums are perfect settings for learning in other ways – they hold research as well as display collections they are staffed with knowledgeable curators. And they are welcoming. They are not for adults only or an elite membership: they are open to the general public. Museums have a mission to educate as well as to collect, preserve and exhibit. There is something about a museum that invites wandering and examining and asking questions. You are surrounded by objects for study, and each one leads out to a myriad of fields. This is a natural setting for active, individual learning. Being museum-based means we frequent the key Toronto collections – the A.G.O., the Gardiner Museum of Ceramics, the R.O.M., the Textile Museum, and dozens of other sites and collections. We bring our students into the world of all that the Muses love, for other cultural institutions are also literally museums. We attend lectures and masterclasses at Toronto’s many post-secondary venues. We go to concerts and performances, laboratories, observatories, studios. Artists and thinkers bring their work to us. Using these holdings and experiences, our students reach advanced skills in inquiry and research. The Dragon Academy is a unique experiment. There are only a handful of true museum schools worldwide, and we believe ours to be the only complete high school program. View full school

- Abelard is a small school with a huge ambition: to instruct and inspire our students to be the intellectual leaders of the future. Students who enter Abelard benefit from an enriched, integrated curriculum taught by gifted high school teachers who are also specialists associated with various universities. Students who graduate from Abelard are ready to enter a world of unlimited possibility. The Abelard School was founded in 1997 by a group of teachers. We started the school because we love to teach, are passionate about our disciplines, and wish to be in an environment in which the acquisition of knowledge is transformative. We want the world to be a better place, and we think that by giving our students an excellent education we are not only handing them the tools to construct that world but inspiring them to do so. Abelard is a school that values the life of the mind, which fosters a love of knowledge and which feeds the innate curiosity of our students. It is academically rigorous: we want to train the best-educated new thinkers of a generation. But Abelard is a place in which this training is a joyful exercise. As teachers, we are completely invested in our students. Our first goal is to provide them with the type of education that will motivate and guide them throughout their lives. The focus of our program spanning grades 9 to 12 is to ensure that our students graduate as astute critical thinkers, ready to enter and succeed in the university program of their choice. In addition to encouraging high academic achievement, we strive to ensure that our students do not limit their future choices: our individualized course selection process ensures that they profit from the breadth of our curriculum each year. Our unique, integrated curriculum and small class sizes provide our students with an unparalleled opportunity to realize their educational goals. Our senior courses are designed as preparation for the Advanced Placement examinations, on which our students have consistently achieved top scores. With our prime location in downtown Toronto at the corner of College and St. George Street, we take full advantage of the many learning opportunities outside of the classroom with field trips to the museums and galleries, the theater, opera, and ballet, to films and readings, and lectures at the neighboring University of Toronto. The Abelard School offers a coherent and integrated four-year program leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. All of our courses are taught at an enriched level and prepare our students to successfully take the Advanced Placement (AP) exams in Grades 11 and 12. Central to our curriculum is its integration. We believe that students should not specialize in high school and that the key to being a well-rounded, successful, and happy individual is a well-rounded education. By the completion of Grade 12, our students will have studied the sciences, mathematics, literature, history, philosophy, and political ideologies of each of the following periods: the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Reformation, the Age of Reason, the Era of Revolutions, and the Contemporary World. The Abelard School is a registered Advanced Placement testing center, and students from our school and many other schools across the GTA write the AP examinations at Abelard each spring. A growing number of parents have been inquiring about a middle school program at Abelard. We are responding to this interest because we believe we are uniquely positioned to offer an enriched, exciting, and challenging curriculum and school experience for students in grades 7 and 8. We have found over the years that many students applying to Abelard from Grade 8 don't yet have the requisite knowledge and skills to make a smooth transition into an academically advanced high school curriculum. By welcoming middle school students at Abelard, we can tailor their education to ensure their ongoing success. In our middle school program, we cultivate a passion for learning. At Abelard, this means that we tackle big ideas and big problems in an age-appropriate manner so that students learn to approach the world around them with an open mind. In addition to the knowledge and skills developed by our enriched curriculum, we teach students to be reflective thinkers, caring and principled global citizens, and bold communicators. We elevate and inspire our students. We've been preparing students to be successful in university for twenty years, now we wish to prepare them for success in high school. At the high school level, we've developed a unique integrated curriculum that stresses the interconnection of academic disciplines. Our exciting middle school program is designed to introduce young scholars to the symbiotic way that ideas overlap in the real world, preparing middle schoolers with the cultural and historical background necessary to flourish in high school. Further, we've learned over the years that students learn best when they can contextualize the concepts they are being taught. All students, but particularly middle school students, benefit from some hands-on, activity-based learning to augment classroom instruction. Our middle school program is augmented by interdisciplinary workshops led by our teachers or visiting specialists. View full school

The TBC staff offers a collaborative teaching approach to the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum expectations. Fun, innovative teachers help create a comfortable atmosphere for student engagement in the learning process. Teachers at TBC are fully qualified specialists in their subject discipline and have been successfully evaluated by the Ontario Ministry of Education inspector for Private Schools. Tapply Binet College was established in Ancaster in 2003. Since its inception, the school has experienced and welcomed ongoing change. Originally, TBC promised class sizes at half the Ministry cap. Ten years later, that number has proven to be too large to ensure that we meet our mission statement, which is our commitment to excellence in education through the provision of personalized quality service and care. We promise no more than 6 students per class! At Tapply Binet we believe that small class sizes empower the students and provide them with ownership of their academic achievements. It also allows the teachers to become intensively involved in each student’s learning process. Today, in our permanent location, we have established roots in the Historic Marshall House on Garner Road West in Ancaster The mandate of Tapply Binet College has been formulated on the premise that education is a service and should be provided with the recognition of, and individual sensitivity to, diverse learning styles, coupled with sustained reference to external standards and accountability to students, parents, and guardians. The recognition of each student’s individuality is given utmost primacy. Tapply Binet College employs a visionary perspective which serves to ensure that each student acknowledges and realizes his or her potential. We believe that student empowerment and responsibility encourage ownership of one’s success and understanding of oneself as an active and valuable citizen of the school and larger community. We are a private co-educational day school for students in grades 7 through 12. Our team is committed to excellence in education through the provision of personalized service and care. Tapply Binet offers a positive and supportive learning environment that ensures all students achieve their maximum potential. A Guidance Counsellor Specialist is available every step of the way during course selection and the process of choosing a career path and post-secondary education. Flexibility in course delivery allows the teachers to meet the various needs of students with unique scheduling demands (e.g. sports activities, travel, illness, and/or other extra-curricular activities and responsibilities). If a student demonstrates interest and ability in a subject area, the opportunity for acceleration or enrichment is encouraged given parental approval. - Today in our shrinking global community, English language education is in ever-increasing demand. The world recognizes that Canada is not only a world leader in education but that Canada, as a society, has a reputation as an ideal country in which they can live, grow and plan a future. This reputation stems from the fact that Canadians are not only viewed as being industrious and polite but also tolerant, accepting, and peace-loving people who promote human dignity, which is indeed the values that are universally admired. TAIL, after being inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education, was approved to grant Ontario Graduation Credits and award the Ontario Graduation Diploma to its graduating students. We are truly proud to offer the opportunity for international students from around the world, to come to Canada and immerse themselves in our comprehensive English-based study programs, while also experiencing the true societal advantages which Canadian values provide. Successful Graduates of TAIE earn the Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma and with the assistance of our Guidance and Career Counselors, will have the opportunity for further studies in one of Canada's famed Universities. TAIL offers this unique learning opportunity directly in the heart of one of Canada’s most vibrant, dynamic, and diverse cities Toronto, Ontario. Students from China, South Korea, Nigeria, Mexico, Bangladesh to mention but a few, a board within a comfortable walking commute to TAIE's educational campus. Certainly, TAIE is committed to providing an authentic Ontario educational experience as a stepping stone towards a bright future. We are also committed to offering the opportunity for students to engage in personal interest and social activities through our school's extra-curricular activities. These activities build personal bonds which last a lifetime. We invite you to use the contact information provided to telephone, email, or even better, arrange an opportunity to come for a visit. We look forward to sharing with you how our programs, facility, and school culture continue to contribute to our purpose of being a premier international school, where students receive an education that enables their career pathway. TAIE International Institute is an international boarding high school, founded in 1998. The main building in Downtown Toronto is situated on Church Street, adjacent to the Eaton Centre, Dundas Square, and Yonge Street. Several distinguished schools are also located near the area, including the University of Toronto, the Ontario College of Art and Design University, and Ryerson University. Because of its' unique, transit-friendly locale and comfortable setting, the school is a haven of peace amidst the bustle of a world-class city. Toronto opens its many neighborhoods, both old and new, for students to explore after a busy day of school work an opportunity for them to enjoy the diverse fabric of Canadian culture. TAIE International Institute is an international school that provides English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), and University Preparation Courses (UPC). Our school has become a model of high-quality education. We are committed to cultivating confidence, strong character, and student leadership. It is with these values in mind that we bolster our student's moral, intellectual, physical, and social development. We strongly believe in "Learning Today for Leadership Tomorrow". Students who complete Ontario High School courses will get an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), and can also apply to any Canadian and International Universities. The main high school course areas include English, Mathematics, Business, Arts, Social Science, and Computer Science. To receive an OSSD, students must obtain 30 secondary school course credits (which include 18 compulsory courses and 12 optional courses). Students must also complete 10 hours of community involvement per year and pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Upon presenting the original transcript to the school, international students could have the courses taken in their original country transferred to Ontario secondary school credits. Students who have not graduated from high school, or who cannot apply to universities in the absence of a high school diploma from their home country, are urged to apply for Ontario secondary school courses. These courses are also suitable for students wishing to use their TAIE ENG4U grades in place of English Proficiency Test scores for university admittance. UPC is a program for international students who have a high school diploma either from their home country or from Canada. This aims to help students enhance their comprehensive academic ability and English skills, and make sufficient preparation for entering university. Students should choose 6 credit courses for their university application based on their career plans. TAIE International Institute provides students with comprehensive courses to satisfy their demands and interest. Before entering UPC, all students need to take an English placement test to determine their English level. Our ESL program builds a solid and necessary foundation for students before they start UPC. UPC students can not only increase their average marks before applying to university but also UPC can help them improve their English levels. Students can become more adapted to a brand new cultural environment. Students and the TAIE guidance counselor will work hard together to meet their university application requirements. The majority of graduates from our school will get admitted to the University of Toronto, University of Alberta, University of Waterloo, Western University, York University, and McMaster University. - Sunnybrook is a vibrant, co-ed elementary school, located in North Toronto. Small class sizes, caring teachers, and strong academics inspire our students to become independent, knowledgeable, and confident learners with an understanding of their world, locally and globally. Our innovative, international curriculum helps them to develop skills and knowledge and nurtures their personal, creative, and academic growth. Sunnybrook is focused on student agency, and developing social and emotional awareness. We were the first school in Ontario to offer the IB PYP, which is enriched at SBS with Singapore Math, 1:1 iPads, and a strong French program. You want your child to become well-rounded, independent, happy, and healthy in mind, body, and spirit. Strong academics, nourishment of your child's physical and emotional needs as well as active nurturing of creative and social development are the goals of Sunnybrook School. Each child is encouraged to learn and grow in an atmosphere of affection and mutual respect. We know our children are growing into a world of rapid change. This means that together with the traditional skills of literacy and numeracy our students must learn the skill set commonly known as 'Twenty-first Century Skills'. These include: Global awareness and environmental literacy Citizenship (local, global, digital) Critical thinking skills (analysis, perspective thinking, metacognition) Communication skills (presentation, writing, multi-media, multi-linguist) Collaboration skills Creativity in multiple areas Information literacy, media awareness Learning how to learn Independence, responsibility, initiative, flexibility, resilience Sunnybrook School was founded in 1952 by Mrs. Irmingard Hoff, as one of North Toronto's first Preschools. It was originally located in Leaside, and in 1960 the school moved to the present Merton St. location occupying its purpose-built premises. A culture of innovation and continuous improvement has guided Sunnybrook School since its earliest days. During the first Merton St. years, the school grew to include grades one through four. In 1985 Mrs. Hoff's daughter, Irene Davy, Ph.D., became the director of the school. That same year a neighboring property was purchased and an addition was built, improving the facilities by adding a gym and three classrooms. Preschool classes were phased out in the 1980ʼs to make way for grades 5 and 6. Three further renovations followed the most recent one in 2011 Sunnybrook is a full elementary school offering JK to grade 6, with one class per grade. In April 1999, Sunnybrook School was Canadaʼs first English-speaking school to adopt the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. We have contributed to the IB community on many levels, taking pride in our active participation in the IB world. In 2018 Irene Davy passed the role of Principal on to Tralee Brunn. Ms. Brunn works with her two Vice Principals, Michael Rossiter, and Tanya Low, to lead SBS into its new phase. Mrs. Davy enjoys her continued involvement in a consulting role. View full school

- Summit Micro School is a private school in west Toronto with students from many corners of the city including Etobicoke, north Toronto, downtown, and around our area of Bloor West Village and Baby Point. At Summit Micro School we believe that all students have the potential to be active, independent thinkers and learners. Confidence and motivation are the seeds of life-long learning and with these, education can be an exploration of ideas and values. Student engagement is critical to inspire students to pursue their interests and push their limits of achievement. Effective education must prepare students with the skills needed for success in an ever-changing world. At Summit Micro School we meet the changing educational demands that students face in the 21st Century with a skill-based curriculum and a strong academic foundation. We give priority to developing skills of collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. While fostering a sense of global mindedness as well as self-awareness, students are given opportunities to stand in their strengths and build a personal sense of citizenship. Depending on what part of the world they are located in, Micro Schools are often independent or private schools offering an alternative to mainstream schools. Curriculum and methodologies vary from school to school but the essential component is their small size. Often, the micro-school model is counter to the industrial age educational model and its impersonal, standardized environment. Micro schools thrive on an approach that reaches the whole child within community-building skills needed to adapt to today’s world and beyond. Summit Micro School started as ‘High Park Day School’ with a vision, three students and two passionate, experienced educators. HPDS quickly became a place where kids wanted to be and were motivated to learn. As the school grew, we expanded our goals and purpose to provide an education that will help prepare today’s youth for success and to develop the skills students need for effective learning in the “21st Century”. Incorporating current evidence-based research we introduced Project-Based Learning as our core curriculum approach. Our programs continued to grow to include our “Maker Space” and STEM program and a Reggio-Emilia Inspired Kindergarten program. Doing what few schools in the city have done as an educational model, we have become leaders in many areas of progressive education. As of August 2018, High Park Day School took on its new identity as Summit Micro School. Our name is now reflective of our vision and mission to continuously push the limits of education to new heights as we move forward so that we can continue to offer our community a responsive education for our modern world. We know that a positive experience in the first years of a child’s education is critical to establish a love of learning and future success as a student. Our Primary Program provides small classes in a nurturing environment to foster the development of the whole child and support inquiry and exploration. Guided and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, we focus on fostering self-esteem and self-respect because we understand that these traits set the stage for a lifetime of confidence, kindness, and empathy. Reggio Emilia programs aim to develop curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of “projects”. Teachers frame children’s interests based on an emergent project-based curriculum that emphasizes collaboration, reflection, and dialogue. These projects may be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. Projects can last from a few days to the whole year and incorporate art and other different forms of media as part of the children’s many “languages”. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. A high degree of parent involvement is also encouraged, particularly when forming curriculums and project plans which happens throughout the academic year. Reggio Emilia programs foster inquiry and curiosity through exploration and play. Watch how a provocation about patterns develops into rich learning experiences and an exciting project for our JK and SK students. Our Junior School program focuses on developing a strong academic foundation, confidence, and learning skills. An emphasis on character and community citizenship allows students to recognize their impact both as individuals and as part of a collaborative team. Students are inspired to work towards their true potential and meet the challenges of a rigorous program. Small classes offer a strengths-based approach to learning. Our Inquiry and Project-Based Learning approach drives students to engage in work that has context and purpose. Our students strive towards developing a deeper understanding of content and connecting complex concepts while becoming active participants in their learning. Language and Literacy, Social Studies, Art, History, Geography, and Media Literacy are integrated through exciting units of themed study. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) are combined logically as they are in real life, during hands-on, experiential lessons. Our middle school program focuses on building strong academic knowledge and skills to prepare students for success in high school, and life. An emphasis on character and citizenship allows students to recognize their impact both as individuals and as part of a collaborative team, inspiring them to work towards their true potential. Small classes support development that leads to confident students who know how to stand in their strengths. Our middle school curriculum is rigorous and challenging. - Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School officially opened on a beautiful country campus in Okotoks, Alberta in September 1971. An amalgamation of Strathcona School for Boys and Tweedsmuir: An Academic School for Girls, the new school came about as a result of the generosity of W.H. Atkinson and the Cross Family. Today, STS is a co-educational independent school community for Kindergarten-Grade 12 that develops well-balanced students for a life of purpose by inspiring excellence in scholarship, leadership, and character. STS' tradition in educational excellence spans more than 100 years through each of our founding schools: St. Hilda's School for Girls, Strathcona School for Boys, and Tweedsmuir: An Academic School for Girls and can be best summed up by the School's motto: Nil Nisi Optimum - nothing but your best. We can think of no higher priority than the future of our children, and my vision is that as a team at STS, we contribute to moving them forward in their journey towards their hopes, dreams, and goals. We will do so in a respectful manner, honoring the individuality and diversity of our community. As we prepare to deliver on a new strategic plan and inspire commitment, trust, and belief in our collective abilities to change the world for the better. The ST's spirit and ethos are infectious and inspiring. We have a history of innovation, tradition, and extensive collaboration with the community, and we will continue to build on our humble roots, be unapologetic in our pursuit of academic excellence, and continue to offer a myriad of experiences to nurture the spirit and passion of our students. As the educational landscape is rapidly changing, we must stay current, protect our core, and ensure our young charges are cared for, ready for the challenges and opportunities that today presents as well as an exciting future. Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) is more than a great school - STS inspires journeys that lead our students beyond anything they could have imagined. Our Mission is to develop well-balanced students for a life of purpose by inspiring excellence in scholarship, leadership, and character. Our Vision is a leading educator recognized nationally and internationally for delivering exceptional programs in a unique setting, with an enduring sense of community. Our School community reflects the pride of shared purpose and love of learning in a values-based environment, where each child is respected as an individual. We believe in developing well-balanced individuals in an environment that emphasizes academic rigor, leadership, character development, self-expression, physical fitness, service, and a global perspective We uphold our values We stimulate a collaborative learning environment while empowering our students through the development of critical and independent thinking using a challenging and balanced curriculum built on a foundation of core knowledge and subjects and appropriate use of technology We provide opportunities to explore and develop an appreciation for outdoor pursuits, the arts, and speech & debate We promote physical fitness, health, and well-being We appreciate and respect diversity We foster strong inter-personal relationships between parents, students, faculty/staff, and alumni in a safe and nurturing community We treasure our strong sense of family and community, and We believe the safety of our students is paramount. At Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School, students thrive in a culture of academic excellence. Students are empowered in their learning and strive to exceed their expectations for achievement. STS supplements the standard Alberta Education curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Programme beginning in the Elementary with the IB Primary Years Programme, moving to Middle School with the IB Middle Years Programme, and ending with the IB Diploma Programme in Senior School. Excellence in teaching and learning is fostered through critical thinking and inquiry. Throughout our students' years at STS, we focus on new and effective practices, incorporating current research and literature into all of our courses. We educate our students in an environment that combines state-of-the-art technologies, outdoor experiential education with opportunities to develop the individual as a whole. At Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS), we are always thinking about how best to prepare students for the future to ensure that they have the skills they will need to thrive in the 21st Century. STS recognizes that our students are digital natives that technology is ubiquitous in their personal and academic lives. Research reveals that students’ comfort with technology in their personal lives is not synonymous with their mastery of technology to facilitate their learning or collaborate for learning’s sake. As such, it is paramount that schools teach information technology skills (ICT), digital citizenship skills, and computational thinking skills to prepare students for the 21st Century. Technology plays a very significant role at all levels of our School. Students in Kindergarten-Grade 7 work within a 1:1 school-issued device program. Students in Grades 8-12 are part of the school BYOD Program. Robotics, coding, 3D printing, virtual reality, SMART boards, and a myriad of software tools are used in all three divisions. As a Center for Teaching Excellence, our vision for educational technology is to be leaders in its use in ways that are human-centered in design, evidence-informed, and prioritize excellence and innovation in programming, pedagogy, and policy. We invite you to read through our Three-Year Educational Technology Strategy. Should you have any questions, please speak with our Director of Academic Programming and Educational Technology.
