About Me

  1. The school was designed, built, and equipped to bring the very best of the British education system, into an authentic Malaysian context. We pride ourselves on a unique atmosphere created with our large on-site community of boarders and staff – deliberately modeled on an established and traditional UK pattern of boarding. We teach the UK curriculum leading to IGCSE and A-level qualifications. Our students move on to top universities, across the globe – with the majority heading for the UK. They have a range of abilities, but our outcomes are exceptional these can only be achieved by high expectations of all, and teaching practices that are adapted to individual needs. The school’s location provides easy access to Penang International Airport, and quick connections to Singapore and all South East Asia destinations, as well of course to all parts of the globe. We enjoy ready access to the World Heritage Site of Georgetown, as well as the many smaller communities on the Island. But the campus itself enjoys a unique rural location, in the new and developing Botanica CT township. Its position ensures a safe and healthy environment, which adds to the special community atmosphere and stimulates a wide range of on-site and local activities. Boarding at the school is very popular, both full time and weekly depending on family circumstances. We have outstanding modern residential facilities, fully managed with academic and domestic staff members always available. The Principal makes new boarders promise to sound miserable when they ring home for the first time some parents are disappointed they are not missed as much as they would hope! That is the success of our boarding. We are fully co-educational from year 7 to 13. Admissions can be at any time by arrangement, and we will always give sound advice to applicants. If we think a young person will not thrive here, we will say so. But for the vast majority of young people, POWIIS offers a wonderful opportunity for personal growth and fulfillment. We work hard at caring for and nurturing, every individual with a pastoral care system second to none. Our academic results are outstanding, but we know success in life is not guaranteed by qualifications alone. We have a vibrant cultural diversity, but we study and communicate in English. Our students work hard at their language development, at the same time developing personal qualities, oratory and performance skills, and social sophistication.

Johnson & Wales University student Brad Dubisz shares his story about a course project: Creating a plan to redesign the Mandarin Oriental Boston lobby. Brad is a Hotel & Lodging major at JWU. JWU Creative Advertising Alumnus Talks Shop with AD TEAM and Advertising Club student members about her account executive position at MullenLowe U.S. In 1963 the State of Rhode Island granted a charter that authorized the university to operate as a nonprofit, degree-granting institution of higher learning and award associate degrees in accounting, business administration, court reporting, and secretarial sciences. In 1970 the State of Rhode Island approved a revision in the university's charter, allowing it to award baccalaureate degrees and associate degrees. In 1972 and 1973, the university announced the addition of new associate degree programs in hospitality and culinary arts. This led to additional 2- and 4-year degree programs in the hospitality and foodservice fields. In 1980 the university was granted a legislative charter to replace its previous charter and became authorized to award advanced degrees. In 1984, a JWU campus was established in Charleston, South Carolina, which offered various 2- and 4-year programs in foodservice, hospitality, and travel-tourism. A JWU campus opened in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1986, offering 1- and 2-year food service programs. In 1985 graduate degree programs were introduced at the university, and the university officially changed its name to Johnson & Wales University in 1988. In 1992 JWU opened a campus in North Miami, Florida. That year also marked the university's formal establishment of the College of Business, The Hospitality College, the College of Culinary Arts, and the School of Technology. A new emphasis on general studies was introduced with the development of the School of Arts & Sciences. In fall 2012, the university began offering a degree in counseling psychology, the first bachelor's degree program offered through the John Hazen White School of Arts & Sciences. This was followed in fall 2013 by the addition of 2 more arts and sciences degree programs. That same year, the university restructured into three colleges and three schools: the College of Culinary Arts, College of Management, John Hazen White College of Arts & Sciences, School of Engineering & Design, College of Online Education, and Center for Physician Assistant Studies (to be incorporated into the College of Health & Wellness). In 2017, JWU again restructured its academic colleges and schools into seven colleges: the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, College of Culinary Arts, College of Engineering & Design, College of Health & Wellness, College of Hospitality Management, and College of Online Education.

  6. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David System will transform higher education and training in Wales. Central to this new model will be establishing a new sustainable planning framework that will encompass, nurture, stimulate, and promote the development of coherent educational pathways across a wide range of institutions. The UWTSD Group includes Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion as part of a dual sector group structure comprising further education colleges and universities. The UWTSD Group has over 25,000 learners across 17 campuses in rural and city locations. Together we deliver clear, tangible benefits for learners, employers, industry, and communities by offering a vocational approach from entry to post-doctoral research. The Group will be further strengthened with the University of Wales merger into UWTSD in due course. The University's main campuses are situated in various locations in and around Swansea's city center and in the rural towns of Lampeter and Carmarthen in South West Wales. The Wales International Academy of Voice, under the Directorship of Dennis O'Neill with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as its patron, is located in Cardiff. Also, the University has a Business School in London for international students. UWTSD has a clear and exciting strategic plan which emphasizes applied learning, strong academic disciplines, and a clear commitment to innovation, enterprise, and knowledge transfer. This connected University is driving through structural and strategic change, closely associated with the industry, business, and enterprise. The University has a clear national profile – delivering for Wales and celebrating its distinctiveness on the UK and international stage. The learner experience is at the heart of our mission. We have placed sustainability at the core of our planning. Developed through our award-winning Institute of Sustainable Practice, Innovation, and Resource Effectiveness (INSPIRE), we have embedded sustainable development through our learning, teaching, curricula, campus, community, and culture. We aim to inspire individuals and develop reflective graduates and practitioners who can make a difference in society. Through work-based learning, research of international excellence, and knowledge transfer networks, we aim to play a pivotal role in promoting social justice, economic renewal, and the development of social and cultural capital. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David System will transform higher education and training in Wales. Central to this new model will be establishing a new sustainable planning framework that will encompass, nurture, stimulate, and promote the development of coherent educational pathways across a wide range of institutions. The core values of the University are derived from our learner-focused mission and vision and are articulated and advanced through the promotion of the following planning themes: Collaboration through the establishment of a range of strategic relationships at regional, national, and international levels. Such networks will have the potential to inspire our learners, staff, and partners to create exciting new learning futures. Inclusivity through putting learners first and championing lifelong learning without barriers, and supporting students from all backgrounds and at all stages of their education. Wales and its distinctiveness through celebrating the distinctive linguistic and cultural assets and heritage of Wales. The concept of Global Citizenship through the development of other multi-national activities and opportunities for our learners, staff, and partners. Research and its impact on policy by ensuring that our research activity and outcomes influence the evidence-based policies developed in Wales and beyond. UWTSD at a glance. The University's Royal Charter is the oldest of any university in Wales and England after the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Our Lampeter campus was founded in 1822 and received its Royal Charter from King George IV in 1828. The Carmarthen campus was the first center for teacher training in Wales, established in 1848, and we can also claim one of the first art schools in the UK, established in Swansea in 1853. I am delighted that His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, is our Royal Patron. We take great pride in our history and our connection to it, mainly how it has provided us with the determination and confidence to shape our future. Today, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is a dynamic and ambitious institution with campuses across three counties in West Wales and the Wales International Academy of Voice in Cardiff and campuses in London for our international students. Our transformational journey continues with the inclusion of Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion as constituent colleges within the UWTSD Group. We are creating a new education system providing progression routes from entry-level to doctoral studies within the region. These opportunities are connected to employers' needs and respond to the economic and social needs of Wales within a broader global context. We are committed to placing our students at the center of our mission by providing a relevant and inspiring bilingual curriculum, providing a supportive learning environment, investing in our campuses and facilities, and ensuring that students from all backgrounds are allowed to achieve their potential. After all, universities are about students, their experiences, the opportunities they have here to challenge concepts, develop as individuals, and thrive. We aim to develop reflective graduates and practitioners who can make a difference in society. We are committed to sustainable development and the environment as one of our underpinning values. It is a theme that is woven into the student experience enabling the UWTSD graduate to develop the right knowledge, skills, and attributes to take their place wherever they may be in the future. We believe that the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is the Connected University connected through a range of strategic partnerships that we have developed at regional, national and international levels, which inspire our learners, staff, and partners. Our connections extend to public, private, and voluntary sector employers working with us to develop relevant programs and activities to maximize opportunities for job growth and investment in the region. Universities must also be powerhouses for economic change. This is why UWTSD is focused on enterprise and innovation, enabling our staff and students to transform ideas into real opportunities and solutions for business. I am proud of our track-record for applied research, and our international work in the areas of Applied Design and Engineering are critical areas of development for the University. The University has submitted a sample of 160 publications from 49 members with internationally and globally leading research to the Research Excellence Framework 2014. These are in Art and Design, Celtic Studies (joint submission with the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies at the University of Wales), Classics General Engineering Geography, Environmental Studies and Archaeology, and Theology and Religious Studies. The role of universities to foster civic pride is significant as they provide and support cultural, social, and economic activity by their very existence. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has an impressive pedigree as a community and civic institution. Our campuses in Carmarthen, Lampeter, and Swansea have enabled us to foster excellent links within the community so that the University, its resources, and services are celebrated as regional assets. Our Cardiff activities, based around the Wales International Academy of Voice, and our campus in London continue these excellent traditions. We aim to create social and cultural hubs where events, activities, and facilities draw the public, business, and organizations into the University environment.
  7. Brought into being through the determination, enthusiasm for learning, and generosity of ordinary Welsh people, the establishment of the University of Wales by Royal Charter in 1893 was regarded as one of the most important political and social developments in the nineteenth century. The University of Wales has a long and proud history, playing an essential role in developing higher education in Wales. Through the University's support for the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS), Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (The Welsh Dictionary), Gregynog Hall (bequeathed to the University in the 1960s), and the University of Wales Press, it helped to promote and celebrate the language, heritage, and culture of Wales. Over the years, the University has adapted to be in a position to respond to the needs of students, both in Wales and further afield. The first phase of this process was completed in 2012 with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Swansea Metropolitan University merger and the creation of Adduned Cymru -The Wales Pledge. In August 2017, both the University of Wales and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David approved a deed of union which delivered on the original policy objective of integrating two historic Universities, thus creating a new University for Wales. Over the years, the University has adapted to continue to be at the heart of the nation's academic, intellectual, and cultural life. Responding to Government policy and the decisions of the founding University institutions to seek their degree awarding powers, the University of Wales has undergone radical restructuring. In 2007 the University was restructured when it was clear that the original 'federal' structure of the University of Wales no longer served the Welsh higher education sector. More recently, in October of 2011, the governing bodies of the University of Wales, Swansea Metropolitan University, and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David committed to irrevocable constitutional change when it was announced that the institutions were to merge under the 1828 Charter of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The University of Wales will cease to be an accrediting body for other Universities in Wales. It will bring to close validated programs offered at centers in the UK and overseas. Spanning three centuries, the University of Wales has been regarded as a national institution that has been at the heart of Welsh academic and cultural life. The establishment of the University in 1893 was regarded as one of the most important political and social developments in the nineteenth century. Through the generosity of ordinary men and women, the citizens of Wales campaigned for the right to University education in their own country. The granting of a Royal Charter for establishing a new national university signified a clear commitment to the people of Wales. The further development of regional learning centers, through the establishment of colleges in Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, and Swansea, was significant and reinforced the regional presence of the University within Wales. The people of Wales regarded their University as a national institution celebrated on both a national and international stage. Over the years, the Federal University faced a series of structural changes, with some constituent colleges calling for more autonomy. In 2001 the then newly established Government of Wales undertook a detailed review of higher education in Wales. One of the key recommendations was that each University and higher education institution in Wales should seek its degree awarding powers. This political decision had significant implications for the University of Wales, with all the constituent colleges moving to gain their own taught and, and in many cases, research degree powers. As a result, the original federal structure, which was at the University's heart, was no longer required. The former constituent colleges left the University of Wales structure over some time. By 2004, all of the original University Colleges had broken away from the University of Wales. Under the Pro-Chancellor leadership, Lord Wigley of Caernarfon, the University restructured itself into an autonomous institution. For the first time in its history, it sought to define a role alongside all the other academic institutions in Wales. The University appointed a Vice-Chancellor to lead the institution's strategic development and put a team of academic staff and senior officers to contribute to new activities in support of the University's mission. While the University continued not to register students in its own right, it continued to accredit degrees and awards for several academic institutions in Wales, to validate programs of study delivered by partner centers at home and overseas, and continued the University's record in supporting a range of vital cultural and heritage services.

This is what our children say: “This is a very safe and happy school, where we are all very respectful and every child has the chance to shine.” “It is very nice that there are loads of people from different countries who can all meet in one place.” The vast majority of parents choose to send their children to St. Monica’s because it is a Church in Wales school and they want the special kind of education a church school will provide. We ask every child to bring their faith with them as they come into school – not to leave it at the door. We are a very multicultural school in the heart of Cathays and welcome children of all faiths as well as those who may have no faith expressed at home. We ask that everyone who comes to St Monica’s, whether they be a pupil, member of staff, or visitor comes with an open heart, ready to join in, in friendship and fellowship. The Vision for our School At St. Monica’s we believe that God loves us and we are made in God’s image. We work together to provide a safe and happy school where the Christian values of love, respect, and forgiveness surround us and every child has the chance to shine. Everyone will have the confidence to make choices in line with God’s purpose, achieve beyond their expectations and share the riches of God’s creation.
