Years 3 and 4 follow the same two-year cycle of topics and years 5 and 6 follow a different cycle of topics over two years. We use the Jigsaw Scheme of Work to teach PSHE. We ensure that every child at Lauriston has equal access to all learning opportunities. Through the garden, we explore the biodiversity of our world and our interaction with it. We find insects whose delicacy and strength amaze us. Spiders, whose silken threads glisten through the seasons as they wrap their captured prey in cocoons of fiber. Invertebrates and fungi interlink the soil with the plants which grow in it, symbiotic relationships helping the bigger story unfold. We sow seeds, watching them germinate and develop as we plant out our vegetables and flowers to form a living picture to fill our days with color and scent. Our handiwork brings forth untold visitors who buzz and chirp and creep and crawl as they find company and food and places to live. We harvest and cook and eat our crops, we collect and store and reuse our seeds. Our school reflection reminds our children that, for our school to be a safe and happy place, we must live and work alongside people from all backgrounds and cultures. Our children know and understand that respect must be shown to everyone and to everything, whatever differences we may have. Children learn that their behavior choices affect their rights and those of others. All members of the school community are encouraged to treat each other with respect. Our participation in international movements, such as Black History Month, supports this teaching, allowing children to develop awareness and appreciation of other cultures teaching in RE enhances our children’s understanding and respect for different faiths and beliefs. Whilst instances contrary to our values are relatively rare, no school can guarantee that there will never be instances that are contrary to these values. Larkswood Primary Academy converted to academy status in February 2015, when Larkswood Primary Academy was established as the founding member of the Lime Trust. We are a multi-cultural school with over 20 nationalities represented. Our ethos is clear-we put children first, we always look for ways to be brilliant, and are values-led, believing in displaying: courage, partnership, equality, enjoyment, trust, and excellence in all we do. Our curriculum is broad, balanced, and motivational, encouraging all pupils to become independent thinkers and learners. We place vital importance on life-long learning, aiming to prepare our pupils for the future workplace and to become global citizens. Our pupils’ behavior is exemplary, they are proud of their learning and their school. Their efforts and successes are constantly celebrated. Larkswood pupils, at the end of Key Stage 2, achieved in line with the national average in 2017, and our younger pupils are achieving above the national average at the end of Early Years and Year 1. The school was inspected by OFSTED on 23rd January 2018 and it deemed that we continue to be a good school. We are very proud of this achievement especially as the lead inspector particularly commented on the fact that the leadership team has maintained a good quality of education in the school since the last inspection, setting high expectations for what pupils can achieve.
