We at Leys Primary School will provide a broad and balanced curriculum for our children to acquire the knowledge, practice the skills and develop understanding to thrive in the 21st century and contribute positively to their community and global society. From September 2014, the government removed ‘level descriptors from the National Curriculum. Schools are expected to establish their assessment systems. At Leys Primary, we have in place rigorous but sensitive systems for formative (in-process) and summative (termly) assessment which track pupils’ performance and informs next steps in learning. We ensure that each child receives a range of opportunities to reach and exceed standards. We ‘quality assures’ our assessments through regular training, sharing teacher expertise, regular monitoring, and cross Federation, external, and Borough moderation. SATs tests will reflect an assessment of the new curriculum at the end of the Key Stages (Y2 & 6). Writing will be judged through reported teacher assessment against national frameworks and the reading, grammar spelling, and punctuation, and maths tests will be externally marked with a score on a standardized scale, ranging from 80 to 130. A score of 100 is the expected outcome at the end of Year 6, indicating that children are ready for secondary school. There will be a Phonics Screening Check in Year 1 & 2.Teachers use formative assessment in their classrooms every day. Formative assessment includes sharing targets and criteria with students and giving them feedback while they are working towards those targets. The purpose is to help students understand how to improve. We love to learn in Nursery and we always try our best. We enjoy learning through play and structured activities. We learn and have fun in a friendly and open environment. We use both the inside and outdoor areas to extend our learning. Reception is an exciting and enjoyable place to learn. Your child will take part in a range of activities across seven areas of learning. This will allow them to explore new concepts through play, as well as through more structured activities. In Year 1 we look forward to learning lots of new skills through creative and meaningful lessons, encouraging your children to be resilient and independent learners. If we are concerned that a child may be at risk from significant harm (abuse) or is being abused, the school is required to refer their concerns to LBBD Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) and the police, if necessary. In exceptional circumstances, this may happen without the consent or knowledge of parents or carers. The school also has a responsibility to act upon other concerns that they may have about a child’s welfare in circumstances where there are no suspicions of child abuse. Examples of this may be when a child is demonstrating inappropriate behavior, is involved in bullying, is failing to come to school, or where difficulties at home are affecting the child’s well being is at risk of being drawn into terrorism. This list is by no means exhaustive. The school will normally seek to discuss any concerns about a pupil with the pupil/pupils’ parents. On entering Nursery, children use the first phase of the Letters and Sounds program to develop a basic grounding in phonics and sound skills. Reception, Year 1 and selected Year 2 pupils are working under the Read, Write, Inc scheme of learning. The program guides children on their reading journey and helps them to establish skills in writing, spelling, and phonetic work. By the end of Year 1, all children utilizing the Read, Write, Inc framework have progressed into accurate and well-practiced readers. Leopold Primary School has implemented the Creative Primary Curriculum offered by Cornerstones throughout all year groups and Key Stages. This program of teaching offers a knowledge- and skills-based curriculum with a focus on creativity and a balanced approach to learning. The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced. Each class discusses and sets its own rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member can learn in a safe and ordered environment. Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. Democracy is embedded at the school. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council Team and pupil questionnaires. The elections of the School Council members are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action. Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Leith Primary is an amazing and historic building right on the edge of Leith Links. The school truly reflects its catchment area. We are proud of the diversity of the children and families we serve. The origins of the school go back to the 15th century. The present site has been the location of the school since 1806. The present building, opened in 1898, is the second to stand on this site and originally provided education for children up to 14. Leith Primary School is very much part of the local landscape. Topped proudly as it is by a ship, a reminder of Leith’s maritime past, it is a well-recognized landmark. We are very fortunate to have access to an area of Leith Links just in front of the school. In 1998 the school celebrated our Centenary with several special events. Inside there are tall staircases, long corridors, and high ceilings where many of the original Victorian features are still in evidence. Although the fabric of the building is over 100 years old, the classrooms are large and light. In 2014 the School gym hall and Nursery in the Duncan Place Annex were closed. Leith Academy is a six-year, comprehensive, community school, with almost 1000 pupils and over 2800 (part-time) adults enrolled. Leamington is a two-form entry school. The nursery can accommodate up to 104 children. The reception classes and the nursery are known as the Foundation stage of the national curriculum. Years 1 and 2 are Key Stage 1 and years 3 to 6 are key stage 2. While some children thrive in the whole class environment, others enjoy working in smaller groups and pairs. They are glad of the security smaller numbers bring. The children are taught how to cook a couple of traditional dishes in their Food Technology lessons. Within History, the pupils study Ancient Civilisations, they learn about Democracy, the school follows democratic procedure annually when voting for school councilors and playground mentors. The children at Leamington are actively encouraged to be aware of what is happening within our country and worldwide. They work hard to understand their role in our community and can discuss current affairs confidently whilst developing a social conscience. The school undertakes assemblies that uphold traditional values of empathy, respect, and tolerance. These are also taught within formal PSHE and RE lessons and on an informal nature throughout the school days. At Leamington Primary we aim to ensure our children have a positive impact on their society. We are developing our children to be the next citizens of a local, national and global society. Our reading scheme at Leamington contains a wide variety of different books from different publishers. The books are color-coded at Foundation Level up to Diamond level which is suitable for upper Key Stage 2 or advanced readers. The attached book banding sheets will give you an indication of where your child is in this progression. The bands are used as an approximate estimate given the range of material we use in the school. Everyone at Leamington is working towards the Liverpool Counts Quality Mark. This is an exciting project to promote positive attitudes to maths not just in our school but as an essential life skill.
